"Hououin Chika... or rather, whichever of these spirit ladies I don't know, who are you? What do you want?"
Chapter 21, Option C! The Dark Flame Envoy Returns to the Mortal Realm
Shido was staring blankly at the empty seat next to him (our socially awkward friend had to go to the bathroom to recover because his classmates were too enthusiastic).
As he pondered yesterday's bizarre experience and the sudden, overwhelming appearance of his "sister," his phone vibrated.
It was a text message from an unknown number:
From: Unknown Number
[Content: You idiot brother, come to that abandoned physics lab at the far west end of the third floor right now. Immediately! Right now! — Kotori]
Shido: "???" (Kotori? What's she doing at school? And why is she using such a commanding tone? The abandoned physics lab? What's going on?)
Despite being full of doubts, the sister's (especially in commander mode) orders were not to be questioned.
Shido had no choice but to say goodbye to his classmates, make an excuse to go to the restroom, and head towards the west side of the teaching building with a feeling of unease.
Pushing open the creaking wooden door, a whiff of dust and the smell of old equipment hit me.
In this somewhat eerie environment, the two figures stood out conspicuously.
Kotori Itsuka, already dressed in her red and black commander's uniform, sat impatiently on a dusty lab table, a jewel dangling from her mouth, swinging her legs.
Murasame Reine stood quietly to the side, wearing her white lab coat as always, with heavy dark circles under her eyes, as if this were her second laboratory.
"Too slow, Shido!" Kotori jumped off the table. "Are you a tortoise?"
"Kotori? Reine-san? What are you doing..." Shido looked completely bewildered.
"No time to explain."
Kotori interrupted him, her expression turning serious.
"To make a long story short, we have detected a highly suspicious target whose spiritual energy reaction is different from that of 'Princess' and yesterday's 'Walter'. It is an elf."
Shido's heart tightened suddenly: "A spirit?! Where is it?"
Kotori looked at him sharply: "Far away, yet right before my eyes. It's your new 'little sister,' Phoenix Inu Chinatsu."
“What…Chika? She’s a spirit? Impossible!” Shido instinctively retorted, “She’s just…”
"Just what?"
"A younger sister you've never heard of suddenly appeared after the space earthquake, her personal information is so perfect it's like a forgery, and her household registration record is so flawless it's suspicious? What a coincidence! Lingyin."
"But...but..."
Shido blushed even more as he thought of Chinatsu from earlier that day.
"...What does this have to do with Chika-chan...?"
Lingyin calmly continued:
"...Preliminary analysis of the spiritual energy waveform confirms it as an independent entity. However, its existence itself...has a logical probability of less than 0.73%. Its identity and purpose are highly suspicious."
Shido was struck dumb, frozen in place. That seemingly aloof but actually caring girl who looked so much for her brother (Chiin) was a spirit?
"She's a suspicious person who suddenly appeared, and she's sitting right next to you!"
Kotori's tone was stern.
"You need to learn to observe, analyze, and get along with women of different personalities! This is basic training! Or is it...?"
She narrowed her eyes and revealed a mischievous smile.
"Would you rather I order you to 'practice' with Chika right now?"
"Absolutely not!"
Shido nearly jumped out of his skin in shock. While Chika was undeniably beautiful, her cold, inexplicably intimidating aura, and the fact that she was his friend's (?) sister—this was too sinful!
"She approaches you in this way, her purpose is unclear, but it is extremely dangerous."
Kotori concluded, "Therefore, in order to deal with her and the other spirits, your special training must begin immediately, without waiting a moment longer!"
"Special...special training?" Shido had a bad feeling.
"Stop nagging!" Kotori said impatiently, pointing with her lollipop at the laptop and a bunch of game discs/hard drives that were already prepared on the table.
"This is currently the fastest way for a complete idiot like you with zero dating experience to understand female psychology and learn conversation skills! Do you want to stand there like a fool and wait to die again next time you see the princess or that 'Walter'? Or do you want to use your meager vocabulary to persuade a tough elf who can build mechs with his bare hands?"
Kotori turned on her computer with a snap, and a beautifully designed Galgame login screen appeared on the screen.
"That's right! It's special training! From now until the end of lunch break, your mission is to complete the game 'Fall in Love! My Little Shido' and make all the correct choices that lead to the best ending!"
"Here?! Now?!" Shido looked at the dusty equipment and the eerie atmosphere around him and almost shouted.
"It's the quietest place here, no one will bother you!" Kotori handed him the computer without any room for argument.
"Enough talk! Let's begin! We'll be monitoring the whole process! There will be penalties for choosing the wrong option! And because of Walter, we've even added a whole host of male characters, including a male university professor, a male teacher, a male neighbor, and a male leader!"
Kotori slapped a blank "Strategy Tips Notebook" into his arms.
"Starting tonight, you'll complete one genre every night! Pure love, tsundere, yandere, older sister... all of them! I want to see your first report tomorrow! Don't even think about sleeping until you've finished it!"
Thus, Itsuka Shido, an ordinary high school student, is "coerced" by his younger sister into harboring the grand ideal of saving the spirits (and preventing social death).
He plunged headlong into the ocean of Galgames. He gritted his teeth and began his first Galgame experience.
At first, things went smoothly. Relying on his kind-hearted intuition, he chose several options that showed concern for the female lead.
["You don't look well, are you alright?"] -> Affection +5
Kotori: "Hmm, she does have some talent."
However, soon, a potentially disastrous question arose. (Female lead:)
"Senior, what do you think of my hairstyle today?"
Option A: ["Very cute, suits you well."] (Safe, but bland)
B. [“Yeah, same as yesterday.”] (Straight male comment)
C. [“This is a beauty beyond compare, surpassing anything mortal! Like stars in the dark night, guiding the direction of our destiny!”] (...)
Exhausted and nervous, Shido's hand slipped... He clicked C.
The female protagonist on the computer screen gave an awkward yet polite smile, as if she were looking at trash.
"...S-senpai is really interesting."
Affection -20 [Bad Flag: Suspicion of chuunibyou (middle school syndrome) has been raised]
The laboratory was deathly silent.
Kotori's face darkened visibly, and she slowly took out a... Bluetooth speaker from her pocket. Reine silently handed her a microphone.
"Hey... Kotori? What are you doing?" Shido sensed that something was seriously wrong.
Kotori ignored him, instead connecting the microphone to the speaker, clearing her throat, and beginning the broadcast in a monotone, emotionless yet crystal-clear voice:
[School broadcast test, buzz—]
[Ahem. Announcement: We're now inserting a precious historical anecdote from Itsuka Shido's junior high school days.]
[Title: The Gospel of Darkness - Author: Itsuka Shido (Second Year of Junior High School)]
"...Ha, foolish mortals, do you know that the Black Flame Dragon that destroys the world is sealed in this right hand? When the blood moon descends and the Evil King's true eye opens, it will be the moment when I, the 'Black Flame Envoy,' descend into this world and take control of the law of cause and effect! Bandages? These are not bandages! These are the 'Bin of Hermes,' which seals my divine power!..." The broadcast's voice echoed clearly through the speakers in the abandoned laboratory, and may even have faintly reached the corridor outside.
Shido's face turned deathly pale instantly, all color drained from his body, and he seemed to have been struck by lightning. Then, slowly, as if in slow motion, he slid to his knees, his hands supporting him on the ground, his body trembling violently, as if his soul had already floated out of his open mouth...
"No—!!! Stop reading!!! Shut up!!!" He let out a desperate wail. It was a dark history buried deep in his heart, a history he swore to take to his grave!
Qinli expressionlessly turned off the microphone: "This is the punishment for choosing the wrong option. If you make the same mistake again, I will print out the entire text and plaster it all over the bulletin board. Continue training."
Chapter 22 Finishing Moves, Archiving, and the Recording of Dark Histories
Chika (Hououin Chika) finally managed to escape from the overly enthusiastic classmates (especially the trio).
After dealing with the origami master's detailed questioning about "my brother's preferences," I was feeling utterly exhausted.
She sat back down, glancing subconsciously at the empty seat next to her, her body relaxing completely without her noticing. She leaned back in her chair.
One hand rests casually on the edge of the table, the index and middle fingers unconsciously tapping the surface gently in a unique and steady rhythm.
(Huh? Where's Shido? He's been gone for ages...)
(Wait... at this point in time... an abandoned physics lab... could it be...?)
Memories of his past life instantly resurfaced!
She suddenly remembered that at this time in the original work, Kotori and Reine would storm the school and kidnap Shido to undergo inhumane Galgame training!
And he'll be publicly executed for choosing the wrong option—he'll have to read aloud the dark novels he wrote during his teenage years!
Chinatsu almost burst out laughing and quickly covered her mouth with her hand, but her shoulders still couldn't help but tremble slightly.
(Here it comes! The iconic scene is coming! Hahaha, it wasn't for nothing that I specially brought you the 'Dark Flame Master' and the 'Evil King's True Eye'! Shido-kun, how does social death feel? How are you feeling now!)
(No, no, no, I can't laugh now. Let's wait a bit longer, until Shido comes back... I have to wait until Shido comes back before I can laugh.)
She could almost imagine how ashamed, indignant, and utterly hopeless Tu Dao must be in the laboratory right now.
And just then.
On the other side of the classroom, Origami Tobiichi was standing by the window, her gaze calmly sweeping across the classroom.
Her gaze suddenly froze on Chinatsu's relaxed posture and the specific rhythm of her tapping on the table, a faint, almost imperceptible hint of doubt flashing in her icy blue eyes.
(The rhythm and force of this tapping... are exactly the same as when Phoenix Inu Senin was thinking.)
[The behavioral habits are highly similar. However, according to the data, the target and his brother have been separated for a long time. This high degree of consistency... is questionable. Record.]
She didn't take any action; she simply stored the detail in her mind and then naturally turned and left.
When Shido drifted back to the classroom like a broken doll whose soul had been ripped out, with empty eyes and unsteady steps, all the students cast curious glances at him.
He slumped into his seat, burying his face in his arms, exuding a thick, gray-white aura of despair, as if he had just survived a world war.
The surrounding classmates whispered among themselves:
"What's wrong with Itsuka-kun?"
"It looks like he's suffered a huge blow..."
"Your face is so red, do you have a fever?"
Chika glanced sideways at the "despairing creature" beside her, suppressing a laugh, and deliberately spoke in a tone that only the two of them could hear—a tone tinged with coldness, yet seemingly unintentionally revealing the truth—she softly uttered a sentence:
"Oh dear... What's wrong with Itsuka-kun?" "It looks like..."
She paused slightly, as if searching for the right words, before gently uttering the fatal blow:
"...It's like being publicly executed for a dark past that I carefully sealed away during my chuunibyou period."
“Puh—!”
Shido's body stiffened abruptly, as if his heart had been stabbed with a precise knife.
He let out a painful, barely audible groan, buried his face even deeper, and froze completely, as if all color had faded from his body.
(How...how did she know?! Was it intuition?! Or...is this the terrifying insight of an elf?!)
(It's all over...it's all over...my image...my life...)
(The effect was outstanding!) Chika was secretly delighted.
Just then, that calm, unwavering voice rang out beside her.
Origami Tobiichi had somehow arrived beside their seats.
She frowned slightly, looking at Shido who was almost curled up in a ball, and asked with a hint of barely perceptible concern (towards Shido):
"Shido, what's wrong? You're acting very strangely."
Shido could only let out a more muffled wail, unable to lift his head to face anything, especially Origami.
Seeing that her inquiries yielded no results, Origami immediately turned her attention to the only person in the know at the scene—Chika.
Her gaze was sharp, but her questions were direct and reasonable:
“Hououin-kun. He came back like this after he left. You seem to know the reason. What were you referring to when you told him about the ‘carefully sealed dark history’?”
