The proprietress looked on with a nostalgic expression. "About seven or eight years ago, she came by boat with a dozen or so people on board. They stayed for a while and then went to Genxu."
"What kind of ship?" Cheng Fei frowned even more deeply.
“A bare iron ship, without sails, looks even stranger than your ships,” the landlady gestured.
"Did she ever come back?" Cheng Fei stared intently at the other person.
"No."
……
As night fell, the crew of the Miriam had dinner together at the hotel. Although the few people from Earth only needed enough food to maintain their vital signs, everyone sat together at the suggestion of Nagasaki Asuna and Zhou Han.
Cheng Fei casually tasted a few bites of local food before going outside.
A cool, aloof girl with long silver hair sat under the eaves, hugging her knees, holding a box containing a letter in her arms, with an ice axe beside her. She gazed at the star-studded night sky, lost in thought.
"Sweetie, this is something to be happy about, why are you sad?" Cheng Fei sat down next to her and looked at the starry sky with her.
"I'm not sad," Shen Xi said in a muffled voice.
"That's good." The young man nodded deftly, then pondered for a moment, "The appearance matches, the time matches, is this her handwriting?"
"I don't know." There was a look of confusion in the girl's eyes.
The boy smacked his lips, neither confirming nor denying, "Have you seen this ice axe before?"
Shen Xi shook her head in silence.
"But she has been to Antarctica," Cheng Fei said casually.
"How do you know?" The girl suddenly looked at him.
"The information I saw at the Geological Institute that day mentioned that she had gone on a scientific expedition."
"Are you sure?" the girl asked, still somewhat doubtful.
"Little cutie, I've always said I'll remember everything I'm supposed to remember, so please trust me a little." The boy pointed to his head, a helpless smile on his face.
“Then let’s investigate.” The girl stood up without hesitation.
"Don't get excited. You can't just rush to the geological research institute right now. You should at least make an appointment first," Cheng Fei quickly pulled her back.
The girl hesitated for a moment, then continued to hug her knees, "I understand..."
The boy observed the small face with its slightly furrowed brows, radiating a faint sadness, and after thinking for a moment, put his arm around her shoulder.
The girl did not resist and took the opportunity to snuggle into the boy's arms, resting her head near his chin.
"Cheng Fei, I feel very confused right now," the girl said softly, staring at what was in front of her.
“I know, relax, we can take it slow.” The young man sighed and paused. “Now let’s assume that she came to the crash site after your birthday, didn’t tell anyone for whatever reason, and never went back. In other words, she faked her death.”
"That's impossible." Shen Xi frowned, then thought for a moment, "She committed suicide at home, how could she fake her death?"
Who was the first to discover that she had been injured?
"It should be... Aunt Tao." The girl hesitated for a moment.
"Will Aunt Tao be okay?" Cheng Fei rubbed his chin.
“Impossible, everyone saw the body later.” Shen Xi shook her head.
“That’s true, then it’s hard to explain. So it’s also possible that she came here first and then the accident happened…” Cheng Fei said as he thought.
The girl opened her mouth, and her slender body suddenly began to tremble.
"Of course, I'm just assuming," the boy quickly said. "Actually, there's a very simple way to find out whether she faked her death or not."
"What?" Shen Xi looked up at him abruptly.
765. Cheng Fei dug up his mother-in-law's grave.
……
When Cheng Fei took off his infiltration helmet, the sun had just set in Academy City, and cars were shuttling back and forth on the roads, just like any other day. No one knew what was happening in another corner of the world.
The boy stretched, went downstairs, and arrived at the 36th floor of the upscale apartment building across the street, opening the familiar door.
The aroma of food wafted out, and Nagasaki Asuna was busy in the kitchen. Her cool, dark-haired figure stood on the balcony, her slender silhouette bathed in the glow of the setting sun.
Under Asuna Nagasaki's watchful gaze, the boy walked to the balcony and stood beside Shen Xi, gazing at the city skyline.
"Teacher Shen, do you think this is fate or something that was calculated?" Cheng Fei clicked his tongue and sighed.
Shen Xi frowned slightly, gazing into the unknowable distance with an inscrutable expression. After a moment of silence, she took a deep breath, turned around, grabbed the boy's arm, and rested her head against his chest.
"Cheng Fei, help me," the girl said softly, her small hands slowly applying pressure.
"Of course, you're my little darling." The boy smiled with relief and gently patted her head.
Shen Xi stirred, her small hands climbing up the boy's back, burying her face in his chest.
Cheng Fei hugged her back, feeling her frail body trembling slightly, and gently stroked the back of her head and spine.
The two remained in this state until, after some time, Nagasaki Asuna peeked out with her hands behind her back and said casually, "Um, although I don't want to disturb you two, let's eat first?"
Shen Xi left the embrace expressionlessly and walked towards the dining table.
Cheng Fei gently patted Nagasaki Asuna's head and then casually pinched her cheek, which she then nuzzled against.
The three sat down and began dinner in a quiet atmosphere.
"So, Shen Xi's mother didn't actually commit suicide, but went to the place where she fell?" Nagasaki Asuna put a small mouthful of rice into her mouth.
"The order in which the two things happen is still uncertain, so I can only say it's possible," Cheng Fei shook his head.
“I see.” Nagasaki Asuna glanced at Shen Xi, who was eating with her eyes lowered, and nodded softly.
"So I plan to confirm this first, so I can make a better judgment later," the boy said.
"But how can we confirm it?" Nagasaki Asuna tilted her head.
Cheng Fei glanced at Shen Xi and lowered his voice, "Grave digging."
"Huh?" Nagasaki Asuna blinked.
"Teacher Shen, there's nothing we can do about it. You shouldn't have any objections, right?" The boy coughed lightly.
Shen Xi fell silent.
"Wasn't the body cremated?" Nagasaki Asuna thought for a moment.
“I remember they buried him right away.” Shen Xi paused, took a deep breath, and her gaze became firm. “Go and confirm.”
"I've been waiting for you to say that. Let's act tonight without delay." Cheng Fei clapped his hands immediately.
"Tonight? That's so sudden." Nagasaki Asuna was a little surprised, shrinking her neck and touching her arm. "And does it have to be at night? It feels a bit..."
"We're digging up graves without permission, so of course we have to do it at night," Cheng Fei said matter-of-factly. "Teacher Shen will lead the way, and I'll take care of the rest."
Shen Xi hesitated for a moment, then nodded, "Mm."
"Sometimes I even admire the efficiency of your actions," Nagasaki Asuna remarked softly, observing the two of them.
……
So after they had filled their stomachs, the three of them set off before dark.
Cheng Fei originally wanted Nagasaki Asuna to stay at home, but the girl insisted on going to help, and Shen Xi didn't object, so Cheng Fei had no choice but to let her go.
After buying necessary tools such as shovels at a hardware store, the three drove their GLS to the Lin family's private cemetery.
Soon, the car stopped outside the wall of a secluded manor on the outskirts of Academy City. During the day, this place would probably be a pleasant spot, but at night, it was pitch black without even streetlights, and the air was unusually quiet. Even the slightest noise became exceptionally noticeable, making one feel subconsciously uneasy.
Cheng Fei first sent the tools inside the wall, then jumped out and looked at Shen Xi and Nagasaki Asuna, who were holding flashlights, with a hint of sarcasm, "Who's going in first this time?"
"How about I finish first?" Nagasaki Asuna glanced at Shen Xi, pursed her lips, and seemed to be volunteering.
The cool, aloof girl's eyes flickered, as if she were struggling with something, before she suddenly said, "Let's do it together."
"Eh, Teacher Shen didn't agree last time?" Nagasaki Asuna looked surprised.
"Shut up, you vixen. If you hadn't insisted on coming, this wouldn't have happened," Shen Xi said coldly.
"Nana, Ms. Shen is afraid of the dark, so she doesn't dare to leave you outside alone." Cheng Fei pretended to cover his mouth.
Then I got glared at, but maybe because I was in a bad mood, at least I didn't yell at them.
"Then come on, you two." The young man smiled, assumed a horse stance, and lowered his arms in greeting.
Two girls sat on either side of him in the crook of his arms, holding onto his neck.
The two frail figures were nothing to the boy; he leaped and carried them over the wall.
The three entered the dark manor and, following Shen Xi's directions, found Lin Wanqing's grave.
The boy checked the name on the tombstone, picked up the shovel, and said, "Alright, let's get started. Teacher Shen, please turn on the light. Nana, please keep watch."
"Okay~" Nagasaki Asuna responded obediently, her gaze sweeping over the quiet, deserted surroundings before turning to the cool, aloof girl beside her who was focused on shining a flashlight. She smiled and said, "If you're afraid of the dark, you can hold onto my arm?"
"Don't be so arrogant, vixen. Nobody here is afraid of the dark." Shen Xi frowned, her tone blunt, though her aura was subtly weaker than usual.
Asuna Nagasaki smiled and remained standing next to her without saying anything more.
Cheng Fei activated Zero, his efficiency comparable to a human excavator, and quickly dug out the coffin.
Shen Xi stood to the side, staring blankly at the scene, her expression complex.
"I'm about to open the coffin. If you two don't want to see, you can step back a bit." The young man took a deep breath, his expression solemn.
Shen Xi silently turned her face away, and Nagasaki Asuna also turned her gaze elsewhere.
"Mother-in-law, please forgive me if you're inside. I will take good care of your daughter." Cheng Fei clasped his hands together and said this with an air of seriousness. He then hung a flashlight on his shoulder, removed the screws from the coffin lid, and forcefully lifted the heavy coffin lid with both hands.
Shen Xi narrowed her eyes slightly and slowly increased the force of her grip on the flashlight.
Asuna Nagasaki glanced at him discreetly, then quickly turned away.
After some time, Cheng Fei covered the coffin back up, along with the soil and turf, trying to restore the scene to a state where no one would notice anything unusual unless they looked closely.
"Cheng Fei, how is it?" Nagasaki Asuna asked hurriedly.
Shen Xi stared at him, her stubborn lips tightly closed.
"Let's talk outside," the boy said, letting out a sigh of relief.
The three returned the way they came, and the GLS drove on a road with streetlights.
Cheng Fei gripped the steering wheel and pondered for a moment, "There are indeed bodies inside."
Shen Xi suddenly raised her head, her clenched hands trembling slightly.
"So that means the person isn't alive?" Nagasaki Asuna patted Shen Xi's shoulder lightly.
"Most likely." The boy nodded, paused, "but I don't think it's time to give up yet."
"What do you mean?" Shen Xi's pupils contracted as she stared at him through the rearview mirror.
"I took this from inside." The boy pulled a small object out of his pocket and waved it.
"Why did Cheng Fei steal a tooth?" Nagasaki Asuna was stunned.
"What do you mean by stealing?" the boy said irritably, carefully putting the tooth away. "This can be used for genetic testing."
"Does Cheng Fei suspect that the person inside isn't Shen Xi's mother?" Nagasaki Asuna asked thoughtfully.
"Who knows?" The boy shrugged. "Anyway, when a person dies, it's all over. Since I'm already here, it's not unreasonable for me to take a tooth, is it, Teacher Shen?"
Shen Xi opened her mouth, but finally nodded, "Whatever you want."
The three returned to the upscale apartment late at night.
Cheng Fei took a shower first and then sat on the sofa to send messages via WeChat.
"Professor Ruan, do you know any experts who can do genetic testing? I'd like to ask you for help."
Just as the boy pressed send, barely audible footsteps sounded beside him, and a soft, delicate body sat down, taking his arm and resting it on her shoulder.
"Nana, your invisibility is practically like a ghost's," the boy couldn't help but exclaim.
"Even if Nana is a ghost, she's a ghost who loves Cheng Fei." Nagasaki Asuna nestled in his arms.
