Fortunately, the program was easy to modify. After figuring out everything except the battery and laser weapon, Ariana easily reset the machine's patrol range.
120 journey
"Thank you for your hard work, Miss Ariana~" When the residents of Prim Town saw the new sheriff, Prim Slim Robot Sheriff, diligently starting patrol, they took out their stored food and drinks and had a small party, and stuffed dozens of bottle caps for Ariana and Postman No. 6.
"After all, it's you who did the job, so I'll give it all to you." Postman No. 6 stuffed all his bottle caps to Ariana, shouldered his cowboy rifle, and left Prim whistling.
By the way, EDE, the eyeball robot, also joined the team. Ariana just adjusted some parts and the robot came alive.
Initially, Postman Six wanted to let Ariana take it, since she had repaired it. However, Ariana felt it was too strange for a humanoid to carry an eyeball robot, so she forced Postman Six to take it with her. She also left the Postman in charge of maintenance.
This robot can do a lot of things, including detection, simple repair services, or medical diagnosis. It is a perfect multi-functional robot. It can also use welding tools and laser combat.
From this point of view, repairing this high-tech (can this be considered high-tech? Ariana said) eyeball robot is a good deal and the time has not been wasted in vain.
It wasn't much, but it was something. Ariana had gotten incredible intelligence about this world, including a strange EDE. It was a big gain; being out there always led to adventures.
The matter in Prim Town was successfully resolved. The tall human Postman No. 6 continued his journey to find the platinum chip with Ariana, who looked very much like a human, and EDE, who did not look like a human at all.
Ariana didn't have any particular concerns about this travel companion. Compared to those idiots who forced their way in even though they had no strength, Postman No. 6 was at least very capable.
Even in the world and era she thrived in, it was rare to find a woman as powerful as Postman No. 6. The stronger the allies, the better, and Ariana subscribed to that creed.
What's puzzling, though, is why Postman No. 6 has to carry an old lever-action rifle. In a world where there are people using submachine guns and laser weapons, why do some people still fight with revolvers and lever-action rifles?
This kind of character should only appear in TV shows or comic books. Why would someone use these two weapons as their main weapons in a world full of dangers?
I don't understand, Postman No. 6, I don't understand what's going on in your head. If you love to hang out so much, why haven't you died on the side of the road yet? Ariana couldn't help but think as she watched Postman No. 6 strolling leisurely in front of her.
Heading south along the road, Postman No. 6 did not seem to be in a hurry to travel. Instead, he would go and take part when he saw something interesting nearby.
On the way south, Postman No. 5.56 stole the clothes of an NCR soldier from a cave he passed by, wore them openly, and also took out dozens of mm bullets for Ariana.
Why are bullets universal? Has the commander already thought of this?
Ariana compared the ammunition from her assault rifle and was shocked to find that the two were almost identical, except that the bullets made by NCR were relatively rubbish.
No wonder the commander had asked her to modify the assault rifle. If the local NCR troops used this kind of ammunition, there would be no shortage of ammunition supplies.
"Speaking of which, aren't you afraid of being recognized in this outfit? Disguising yourself as a soldier is a serious crime, right?" Ariana said to Postman No. 6. She had already put on her NCR combat uniform, a flat helmet, and dust goggles.
"Ha, new people die in this place every day. It would be a miracle if we could recognize the new people coming here. It's more convenient to move around in this outfit. At worst, we can just find a place to change into another one later." Postman No. 6 was not so careless. He just carried the cowboy rifle and revolver on his back and continued on his way.
Ariana swallowed back any talk about the dead possibly harboring deadly germs. In this world, there was no time for hygiene, and judging by the postman's animal-like physique and strength, there was probably no need for her to even consider the issue.
However, the most obvious thing about wearing NCR clothes is that they get beaten more often.
The scattered fugitives encountered on the road would shoot at Postman No. 6 because she was wearing NCR clothing - after all, NCR is responsible for the security and patrol tasks here. When the fugitives see someone wearing this kind of clothes, they will either attack directly or avoid her in advance.
However, this kind of battle was no challenge for the eagle-eyed Postman No. 6. After eliminating a gang of fugitives and the entire group of Jackal gang members occupying the Nevada Highway Patrol station, the Postman and Ariana each carried a large amount of equipment that could be exchanged for money and continued south.
"Oh, it's a bit far from here to the place where we can trade equipment. I don't think Neptune can handle this batch of goods." Even though Postman No. 6 was strong, he felt it was inconvenient to carry a dozen guns, several sets of clothes and a pile of bottle caps.
"How about taking a short detour?" Postman No. 6 turned around and looked at Ariana, who was not sweating at all.
"As long as I can sell these," Ariana shrugged.
To reach Neptune, the Postman needs to first go to the southwest corner of Mojave and then continue east.
In the southwest corner of Mojave lies the Mojave Outpost, which belongs to NCR.
At the intersection of the outpost, there are two large metal statues. They represent the Desert Rangers and the NCR Rangers, two groups that have joined forces to fight against Caesar's Legion.
In 2271, the Nevadan Desert Rangers and NCR Rangers met beneath the statue and signed the Ranger Agreement. In the agreement, the Desert Rangers agreed to merge with the NCR, and the NCR agreed to protect Hoover Dam, New Vegas, and Southern Nevada from Caesar's Legion.
A large amount of supplies were transported from the rear to the outpost via the constructed roads, and then delivered to the NCR troops in the vast Mojave Desert.
Although because NCR's forces were too dispersed, these supplies were often attacked by local bandits and Legion commandos during transportation. Therefore, although the rear had tried its best to provide supplies, at least half of these supplies became other people's supplies in the Mojave land.
Regardless, the outpost is a competent distribution center for supplies. Many people do business here, buying and selling goods, drinking, and so on. NCR quartermasters will also pay you with bottle caps to buy the equipment you have salvaged.
But if you commit a crime on NCR territory, don't even think about operating here.
121 Passing the Outpost
The NCR outpost's military camp was built using a gas station built before the war. On both sides of the road, one side was the NCR troop camp, and the other side was crowded with two-headed cattle - these two-headed cattle were brought by people who came to Mojave to do business, and were used to carry the merchants' goods.
Their troops valued the location of the two gas stations and thought that this place would be perfect as a stronghold. So the NCR people surrounded the area with a circle of barbed wire, added some sandbags, and then erected two large metal statues there as landmarks.
They then sent some people to use it as an outpost, but the metal used in the fortifications was less than one-tenth of that used in the statue.
The NCR camp is divided into two buildings. One serves as the NCR soldiers' barracks and headquarters, while the other serves as a bar. Most travelers, civilians, pilgrims, and merchants choose to rest here for the night, resting before setting off into the Mojave.
Postman No. 6 had chosen a detour to come here to gather some intelligence. Although Ariana didn't care much, as a seasoned veteran, he knew that this was a place with so many people coming and going, and he was sure he could get some useful information.
At least asking around was better than just rushing on. Furthermore, the number six courier, dressed in NCR soldier uniform, managed to pass himself off easily without anyone noticing anything was amiss.
Perhaps it was a mistake to have high expectations for the quality of the troops in this environment. Ariana watched as Postman No. 6 skillfully exchanged questions with the soldier who was checking his identity, while also introducing himself as a relative.
"Strange, how come you're so eloquent when you're talking to NCR soldiers?" Ariana kept her mouth shut, watching Courier No. 6 sneak into the camp.
NCR Rangers were also stationed in this military camp. Ariana looked at a woman dressed in cowboy clothes on the roof of the building. She wore sunglasses and held a cowboy lever-action rifle with a high-performance sniper scope, staring into the distance from time to time.
That was probably the Ranger. Ariana could feel that this man was completely different from the other lazy soldiers. Compared to the private, the man holding the sniper rifle was more steady and sharper.
It seems it's not that people don't like using laser weapons, but rather that civilization in this post-nuclear world hasn't developed enough to produce them again. Or perhaps these Rangers are just relatively broke.
"Ranger, I used to be a Ranger too. This man is a Ranger who fights for his country and his beliefs... How wonderful! The country I was loyal to is gone." Ariana sighed softly. Forget about those trivial things. There's nothing wrong with working for the current commander.
Just as Aliana was lost in thought for a while, Postman No. 6 came out of the barracks with a bitter face. She came out with a small bag of bottle caps and a half-empty backpack, sighing.
"Aliana, you can't believe how hateful the people here are. Damn, do you know why they don't care about my identity? Because they don't care about their soldiers' equipment at all. If something breaks, they have to spend vase caps to fix it. If clothes are torn, they charge money. If weapons are broken, they also charge money. When I did this in California, they just replaced my gun with a new one - but the rules are stricter over there."
Postman No. 6 complained quietly.
"I was looking for a quick job, but after asking around, I found out there was only an old Ranger who had something to do. I asked what kind of job, and he said, 'The roads north are too unsafe. Clean up the Radscorpions around there, and I can find some extra supplies.' The NCR can't even spare anyone for this long, boring job. I doubt he can provide the supplies, and he's just trying to get away with it."
"Perhaps the shortage of manpower is caused by insufficient supplies?" Ariana guessed.
"You're wrong, because all the people who came here have gone to support the front line, leaving the rear empty. The manpower here cannot be moved around casually, so the Rangers want to find some reliable people to do the job. Well, do you want to sell this news to the Legion? No, forget it, the people in the Legion must have known it a long time ago, and it's useless to sell this news. I'm so irritable, let's go, Ariana, let's have a couple of drinks to relieve the pressure." Postman No. 6 said as he flirted with Ariana.
"Do you really have pressure?" Ariana was dragged into the bar. It didn't matter what she drank, she couldn't get drunk.
"We've been walking for such a long time, let's take a break. It's time to combine work and rest, Ariana. Boss! Four beers!" Postman No. 6 looked around the room and showed a malicious smile.
What the hell, four beers? Ariana watched in amazement as Postman No. 6 stuffed a beer into his mouth and refilled the water gun with a new one. Finally, he took the two beers and went to find a woman at the bar wearing a cowboy hat and carrying a rifle.
The woman seemed to be drinking alone, and Postman No. 6 seemed to be very confident in her eloquence. She seemed to be planning to use a glass of beer to get some information out of others.
"Hey, you little widow cutie, why are you drinking here alone? How boring." Postman No. 6 sat down next to her smoothly, causing her to roll her eyes exaggeratedly.
"What the hell is your business, you fag?" the woman in the cowboy hat said bluntly.
She's truly courageous, even fighting back against a 6'9" mailman. As a human being, she's incredibly brave—or perhaps foolish, anyway. Ariana grumbled inwardly. Hey, can she really get anything useful out of that mouth of hers?
"Don't say that. I think we are destined to be together. Look at this beer. I'm treating you. Let's not get excited, okay?" Postman No. 6 said with a grin.
"Okay, keep your claws under control." The other party, adhering to the principle of "if you don't take advantage of an opportunity, you're a bastard", took the beer from the postman's hand and started slamming it.
But she wouldn't suffer any loss if she got into an argument or a fight, so it didn't matter. I'd just find a place to hang out. Ariana turned and went up to the roof.
The Ranger sniper was there, waiting. Ariana wanted to talk to her.
The sniper noticed Aliana coming up immediately. She stared at her for a while and then said.
"Hmm? You're a companion of that soldier-postman? If that's the case, you're in luck. My name is Ghost, and if you have good eyesight and don't mind walking a little further, you can earn some bottle caps."
"Specifically?" Ariana had little social experience, so she could only hand over the beer hesitantly.
122 New Events, New Teammates
"There's trouble in Neptune—I can explain the deserted streets, but I can't understand the black smoke rising from the town. I'm sure it was attacked, so I wonder if they escaped. All this smoke, probably the Dynamite Gang's doing," said the NCR Ranger sniper named Ghost, then grabbed the beer and guzzled it without hesitation.
Hey, hey, hey, there are too many Dynamite Gang members. Did you guys lock up over a hundred people? Why are they all saying they're from the Dynamite Gang? Ariana grumbled inwardly. And aren't you afraid I'll drug you? People in this world are just too generous.
"If there are any survivors, they must be hiding in Neptune Cathedral. Go and take a look, and come back to tell me the information." said the ghost.
"What about the reward?" Ariana was also going to Neptune, so it was just on her way.
"Reward? Reward is NCR's sincere thanks!" The ghost suddenly said excitedly.
"What the hell?" Aliana was puzzled.
"Just kidding, that was NCR official language just now. This kind of language has created a 'miracle' for morale here. Damn, that useless President Kimball keeps saying that being shot is our damn reward." The ghost seemed to have been annoyed for a long time and couldn't help but pour out a lot of grievances.
"But please still help me, and I will do my best to express my gratitude. Everyone knows that I hate everyone I see, and if I say something good about others... then it's golden." The ghost said that he could talk more and help them earn a lot of good reputation in NCR.
"You seem to be quite skilled, why don't you go and see for yourself?" Ariana felt that the ghost could do it himself.
"I have a mission. Don't think I don't want to go - if Neptune gets in trouble, there are enough sniper points in town for me to take a few heads. I can't let my boss find fault with me anymore, even if I could bring back Caesar's head instead of sitting here like he's in jail." The ghost said that he also had his own problems.
Downstairs, the mailman and the cowgirl seemed to be shouting furiously. They were probably cursing the NCR and the Rangers for being useless, patrolling all day without knowing what they were doing, and trapping all the caravans in this shabby place, preventing them from leaving. They couldn't get any work, couldn't leave, and were stuck drinking in this shabby bar.
Kas angrily complained that all the people and goods in his caravan were gone, and that if those idiots in NCR had worked harder, this kind of thing wouldn't have happened.
The ghost obviously heard it, but she didn't mind at all. After all, she was also the Ranger trapped in this shabby place, and she might even be happy to listen to the scolding downstairs.
"Okay, I'll take it." Ariana felt that there was nothing wrong with it. At most, it would only require two trips.
"Okay, look at you, full of energy and ready to go. I really hope that other people here can be as positive as you. Also, I don't want you to get killed for being stubborn. If you get into trouble there, I need you to get out of it safely and not die, okay? I look forward to hearing good news from you, and thank you for the beer." The ghost waved his hand and let Ariana leave.
Ariana strolled back downstairs and saw Postman No. 6 hugging the gloomy beauty and crying loudly.
"Fuck! Fuck! Ugh! Cass! How could this shit happen! This damn Mojave! Damn Mojave!" Postman No. 6 opened a new bottle of wine, drank half of it himself, and handed it to the woman next to him, who said with tears and snot.
"There's nothing I can do, there's nothing I can do. Hey, thank you for the wine, I can, I can..." The beautiful woman named Cass drank the remaining half bottle of whiskey, and fell limply to the ground before she finished speaking.
"It won't take me more than a few minutes to go up there, right?" Aliana glanced at the drinks on the table. In addition to beer, there were more than a dozen new bottles of wine.
"This is not wine, this is the bond that connects us! Burp! Ah, shit, I guess I need to sleep all night. Ariana, let's just stay overnight." Postman No. 6 carried Cas on his shoulders and went back to the room.
"Oh. Maybe this is what humans are like." Ariana could only convince herself that humans need alcohol to numb their pain, and followed Postman No. 6 to watch her find a place to sleep.
Luckily, my job was just to keep an eye on the postman. Anyone else would have left long ago. Looking at the two snoring, Ariana pulled a stool over to block the doorway to rest, charging herself with the portable battery in her backpack.
However, if there is a small nuclear fusion reactor here, perhaps in the near future even the batteries will not be needed, and a more powerful reactor can be directly replaced. However, the cost is that it may cause ecological pollution if it is blown up.
Thinking about all these things, Ariana compiled what she saw and heard into a report and submitted it to the Oasis Base, then quietly waited for the arrival of the next day.
***
"So we have a new companion?" Ariana said as she looked at Postman No. 6 with his arm around the cowboy beauty next to him.
"There's nothing I can do. How can a good guy like me just leave Cass alone? Ah, no matter what, she is willing to go out and exercise with us. I used my fists to reason with the Ranger and asked him to let Cass go." Postman No. 6 patted Cass's shoulder. The other party's face was very pale, and his eyes were confused. It was obvious that he was still hungover.
"Having more people is fine, but how can you come back alive after punching the Rangers? I don't understand." Ariana narrowed her eyes.
"That's why I told you that you're still a novice. All you need to do for this kind of thing is pay some money." The postman looked indifferent.
"How many bottle caps do you have left in your pocket..." Ariana asked.
"It's not much, but don't worry, I never lend money. Cass, are you ready?" Postman No. 6 patted his deflated pocket.
"No problem. Hey, I just need to pull myself together. See if there's any work I can do with the Crimson Caravan..." It seemed like Postman No. 6 had managed to lift her spirits with his alcohol yesterday. Cass still looked a little down, but she had pulled herself together.
"Don't say that, Cass. As long as I'm alive, whoever kills your caravan will die! Of course, the premise is that I can find those people." Postman No. 6 said, flexing his muscles.
"That's a deal, then. Ha, I do have a clue, but... that place is a bit too far from here."
"It's okay, we can just stroll over. This kind of thing is never harder than peeing."
"Hey, that's a really nice thing to say. I like your mouth." Cass seemed to enjoy the crude line. She had already slung her gun over her shoulder and was ready to move forward.
123 First Visit to Neptune
There are more weird guys, but this new teammate looks a lot more normal than the postman. At least he doesn't lose control of his facial expressions or sip beer at people he hates.
Ariana gathered herself and continued on with Postman No. 6. They had a new member in their team: Cass, a skilled gunslinger.
After leaving the Mojave outpost and heading east for a long time, the two men and two machines finally saw a town with smoke rising from it. On the outskirts of the town, there was a wooden sign with the word "NIPTON" written on it.
"The town is really smoking. The ranger was right." Aliana had explained her mission to Postman No. 6 and Cas on the way.
"Let's be careful." Cas was already holding his weapon, alert. Postman No. 6 walked in with his handsome revolver, telling EDE to prepare for battle. Meanwhile, Ariana, with her sharpest eyesight, noticed a commotion erupting in the town.
Just when a few people hadn't figured out what was going on, a fat, mentally ill-looking man ran out of the town.
"Yeah! Who won the jackpot? It's me!" He shouted loudly and ran out of the town. "Fresh air! Ah! I really want to take a gulp!"
"Grow your brain, fat guy. Are you crazy?" Postman No. 6 cursed.
