22. The Truth

“Mubai, what should we do next?”

Hearing the voice, I was in great shock. ‘It’s Mei!’

I paused, ‘Isn’t Mei dumped by Ling Mubai? Why is she here?’

Suppressing the wrath inside, I kept saying to myself that it was not that bad. But my heart kept sinking.

The answer was obvious. I asked Doudou to go back and eavesdropped alone.

‘If my child was killed by them, I won’t let them off the hook!’

I thought the truth was about to be unveiled, but the voice stunned me. Their words took an unexpected turn.

Mei’s disappointed utterance was mixed with her sobs, “Mubai, Huansheng’s child was gone. What should we do?”

“Don’t worry. We still have chances. We will have another child!” Ling Mubai said that though his tone seemed a bit annoyed.

I froze.

‘What does Ling Mubai mean? Their child? He still loves Mei?’

‘Did he keep pretending in my presence?’

‘But does this have anything to do with my child?’

“But doctor says I can’t be pregnant in the future. Huansheng didn’t keep our child. Mubai, where can we find another child?”

Mei was getting more disappointed. She wept in Ling Mubai’s arms.

I became more confused, ‘It was my child. Why does Mei say it was hers?’

‘What do they mean?’

There was a conjecture popping up in my mind, but I was reluctant to admit that. I didn’t know how to face the cruel truth.

Then, I heard Ling Mubai comforted Mei calmly. His words shattered my hope. He crossed the line.

“It’s okay. There are plenty of women who want to give birth to my child. I can accept any woman as long as she has a womb. Shen Huansheng’s child was gone. We can find another woman to be the surrogate mother.”

‘Hah ha, surrogate mother.’

‘Ling Mubai, you really hurt me. All the things you did were for Mei. She can’t give birth to a child, so you want me to be the surrogate mother.’

‘Well, this is indeed true love. But your love is for Mei not me.’

‘I’m just a miserable surrogate.’

I was simmering with rage. My fists clenched and fingertips became pale. Ling Mubai’s following words were more ruthless.

After walking back to my office, I prepared resignation and divorce papers. Kicking the door open upstairs, I took two steps toward him with a gloomy face and threw the papers onto his face violently.

I stood straight to show my decency. Looking down at his face, I snapped, “Ling Mubai, thank you for pretending to be a good husband. This money is for your hard work in bed. Go buy some invigorator!”

Before he could open his mouth, I rushed out of the office and drove over the speed limit towards the house. I needed to get out of here. Every second I spent here would tear me apart.

Li happened to pack her package.

I thought it might be Ling Mubai that sacked her because I had lost my baby. Li didn’t have to take care of me.

I fumbled for my purse and gave her all my cash. Li had looked after me day and night these months. She had worked really hard.

“Li, take this money. I’ve heard that your son needs money for medical treatment. I’d like to help you, though the money isn’t much.”

Li’s eyes turned red. She held my hands and wept, “Ms. Shen, I’m… I’m really sorry…”

I could tell guilt and shame from Li’s face. She grabbed my hands and repeatedly apologized to me. Tears streamed down her face. She was about to kneel down and kowtow.

Even if I was an idiot, I could feel something strange about her behavior.

Li was rattled. She became more remorseful and couldn’t stop sobbing. Her head shook violently and she said she didn’t know anything.

Liang’s words and Ling Mubai’s utterance flashed through my mind. I suddenly realized something.

I shook off her hands and yelled at her hysterically, “Was it Ling Mubai’s mother? Did she ask you to kill my baby?”
