"You look good!"
Ghost Lin showed Devon two thumbs up, as the latter did a good job of doing her hair and makeup for the party later. She bobbed her face to inspect her once again before she nodded in satisfaction.
"Ghost Lin, I am unaware until now that you're quite charming." Devon touched her cheek as she looked in the mirror once again.
"Quite charming?" Ghost Lin scoffed in dismay, as she couldn't believe Devon would insult her that way. "Girl, if you attend that party looking like that, be prepared for unwanted attention! I won't be surprised if someone poached you!"
Devon pursed her lips and smiled as she faced Ghost Lin. "I don't want unwanted attention, but do you always look like this?"
"I am always beautiful, even without makeup. What do you mean?"
"What I mean is, did you always take care of yourself like this?" Devon clarified, which took Ghost Lin aback a little.
"Well." Ghost Lin cleared her throat as she scratched her cheek. "Before, yes, before I embraced my laziness. Want to see me?"
Devon immediately nodded in excitement. Seeing her face with a little makeup made Devon curious about what Ghost Lin looked like before. She wanted to know her style, and just have a photo of her since all she could see was a ghost wearing the same clothes every day.
"Take my phone and open my Weibo account." Ghost Lin instructed, which Devon did diligently.
Devon logged in to Ghost Lin's inactive account and clicked all the buttons that Ghost Lin told her. Soon, images of Ghost Lin's selfies and tons of photos graced her eyes.
"Ghost Lin…" she murmured while scrolling all old photos from years ago. Seeing how beautiful and good Ghost Lin's photos were as if she never had a problem, brought a subtle smile to her lips.
"See? I look great, right?" Ghost Lin smirked as she crossed her arms proudly. "If I set my account public back when I was active, I would be a star now! See how pretty this girl is?"
"Mhmm. You're very pretty." Devon smiled as she stared at one of Ghost Lin where she was smiling candidly in a stolen photo.
Ghost Lin raised her brows as she bent over, checking Devon's side profile. "Are you crying?"
"No, I'm not." Devon shook her head lightly as she raised her head and smiled gently. "I only realized that I had never seen you smile."
"Girl, just look in the mirror."
"I mean you, not me. We may share the same face and physique, but our souls are different individuals." Devon frowned slightly as she stared at Ghost Lin. The latter forced a smile, making Devon roll her eyes.
"You don't have to force yourself. What I want to see is your candid smile," Devon murmured as she continued on scrolling. Soon, Devon stopped in one photo that caught her eyes.
The uploaded picture was Ghost Lin holding a photo of her grandfather and her younger self. Ghost Lin's caption was just a simple 'I miss you,' with a heart, but it made a huge impact on Devon's heart.
"That's my grandpa. Isn't he handsome even when he already had white hair?" Ghost Lin's eyes softened as she remembered that photo. "I always kept that picture with me. If I can take any materials with me, I'd take that photo. Sadly, I can only take memories."
Devon raised her head to Ghost Lin, who had her eyes fixed on the photo. "Shall I frame it and put it on display?"
"Huh?"
"I've never seen this photo before. I want to put it on display since it is a photo of my family." Devon explained with a bright smile. She considered Ghost Lin and her grandfather her family now, so she wanted to have them on display.
"Uh." Devon's words and suggestion rendered Ghost Lin momentarily, as she didn't expect that from her. "Whatever, girl. The picture is just inside that drawer."
Ghost Lin pointed out, and Devon immediately searched for it. She didn't expect that Devon would say such a 'strange' thing as to consider that picture as the picture of her family. It was not like Ghost Lin disliked it. She just felt strange about how Devon's mind works.
"So this is it." Devon smiled as she held the picture carefully. "It looks different from the photo in the phone."
"That's because that picture is old."
"You're adorable." Devon's eyes softened as she stared more at Ghost Lin before her eyes shifted to her grandfather. Ghost Lin didn't lie when she said her grandfather didn't lack appeal despite his age.
"Your grandfather." She narrowed her eyes as she pondered if she had seen this man before. Devon couldn't tell, but her gut feeling told her he reminded her of someone.
"My grandpa is the coolest grandpa to ever exist! He is very kind. I don't even know where that piece of trash son of his got his unfaithful character!" Ghost Lin grumbled as she suddenly thought of her father and his other sons and daughter from different women.
"Hmmm?" Devon rubbed her chin as she pondered where she would put the small picture. "Should I ask Lu to enlarge it so I can display it in the living area?"
"Girl, please don't do that."
"But, you had Lu's portrait in your room!" Devon exclaimed as she remembered Lewis' poster in Ghost Lin's room. "Why did you have his photo anyway if you didn't like him?"
"Ahh, that. It's my therapy."
"Pardon?"
Ghost Lin clicked her tongue in annoyance as she floated towards the desk and perched on it. "You see, I can only sleep beside that guy if I meet certain requirements."
"Requirements?"
"Yes! First, I need to be sleep-deprived, and second, I need to look at his face so I can be immune." Ghost Lin explained in a matter-of-fact tone. "You already know, but even when I don't like handsome Qin, he is still handsome. I can't let him use his face as a weapon."
"Ghost Lin, you are really odd."
"Geez! Stop saying I'm strange! Get up now! Let's find you an outfit to wear!" Ghost Lin harrumphed as she urged Devon to get up, as they had been chatting for a while. Devon placed the photograph on the desk before dragging her feet to follow the ghost.
**
The ghost had made her try different outfits, mix and match to see which would suit Devon the best. Although it was such a task, Devon happily tried everything, and both of them obviously enjoyed their time.
In the end, Devon settled for one shoulder with a 3/4 sleeve black bodycon dress. She stood in front of the full-body mirror, checking herself out, as she never realized Ghost Lin had a good figure.
"I knew it the moment I saw this dress… it will suit you." A smug grin appeared on Ghost Lin's face as she stared at Devon. "It's been a while since I wore something so girly. Now I'm sure I'm the best!"
"Have you only had one marriage proposal?" Devon inquired out of nowhere as she stared in the mirror and almost couldn't recognize herself.
"What do you mean one? Do I need more?"
Devon frowned as she turned her head in Ghost Lin's direction. "In my world, beautiful young ladies received many marriage proposals from different houses. It's strange how this world and ours are too different."
"I don't know how different you're talking about, but I think it's just culture difference." Ghost Lin shrugged. "Also, I bet your world just errs... how do I say it? Outdated?"
"By different, I mean, this world relies on technology while ours relies on magic."
"Ahh. So that's what you…" Ghost Lin's eyes dilated in shock. "Magic? What do you mean by magic? Like there are mages and monsters or something like that?"
Devon nodded innocently. "Although the numbers of mages had decreased before I passed, mages are well-respected everywhere."
"Wait! Mages like real ones? Do they have special powers? For example, they shoot beams or fire out of nowhere?" Ghost Lin excitedly floated in front of Devon with her eyes twinkling.
"Aren't mages like that?" Devon furrowed her brows as she drew her head back a little.
"Oh, my goodness! Really??"
"I know mages are great, but are there no mages in here?" Devon tilted her head to the side. "Even one?"
"Girl! If there is a living mage here, people will worship him! Gosh… the world you came from is like a fantasy world."
Devon pursed her lips as she bit her tongue before diverting her eyes. "A fantasy world… this world is what I call a fantasy world."
"What?"
"My world is more complicated than what it sounds, Ghost Lin." Devon glanced at Ghost Lin. "People always suffered from wars, monster attacks, and matters where real lives are at stake. In this world, there are no wars and people have more liberty. That's why this is what I call a fantasy world."
"Well… I guess we all have different definitions of a fantasy world."
Devon only smiled at Ghost Lin before they proceeded to complete her look with simple accessories.. Soon after, Dion came to pick her up and had to suffer once again, as Devon was testing his survival rate.
