Chapter 52, Section 24: Four Shots of Lightning

Chapter 52.024. Lightning Flash

Amamiya Megumi bounced around in Jin Ziyue's arms, unable to see what was happening behind her.

Jin Ziyue said, "When I throw you out, make sure you don't touch me or the water."

After giving his instructions, he gritted his teeth and sprinted with all his might.

He used up his last breath to speak, and around the corner, he rushed into the brightly lit corridor of that floor.

The spacious walkway slowed the spread of the water, giving Jin Ziyue a chance to create some distance.

The glass door was smashed, and rows of desks and chairs along the way were knocked down.

The sound of rushing water spread rapidly. Jin Ziyue could already hear the water splashing under his feet as he ran, but he ignored it, pushed open the door of the room, and jumped out.

The foot that jumped just barely avoided the grab that reached out from the water.

But this jump also means that you need to cushion the impact upon landing; even if you roll to dissipate the force, you still can't escape.

The room Jin Ziyue escaped into was next to a power well.

He threw the girl in his arms away. As she landed, the monster behind him pounced on her. Looking back, he could see its towering body and its ten claws reaching out to grab him.

Jin Ziyue jumped to start, turned sideways and used his shoulder to ram the door of the power well.

The long-neglected door lock was broken open, and the monster's water rushed in.

Amamiya Megumi quickly ran away, and the short girl immediately climbed onto the stool.

The monster was dragged along by Jin Ziyue and thrown into the inner room.

The monster was sticky and glue-like all over, so physical attacks were ineffective against it. It had no shape and was forcibly pulled into the electric well by Jin Ziyue's arms.

The sounds of a struggle and collision rang out.

Suddenly, the lights in the room seemed to be startled, flickering incessantly, and the sudden darkness made the little girl scream repeatedly.

"Roar—" The monster's water surged continuously, and sounds kept coming from the electric well. Half of its body was exposed outside, flickering between light and darkness, and it howled incessantly.

"Big brother!"

Amamiya Megumi called out anxiously. Jin Ziyue was in a small room, which was clearly the electrical room. The sign at the door warning of electric current danger made her panic.

The civilian voltage in District 16 is 110V. This current intensity is not a problem for the liquid monster to conduct electricity.

The monster with a water-based body could not escape the surging electric current no matter how much it struggled.

In the darkness, sparks flickered wildly from the high-voltage wires, and streaks of white light, like giant fairy wands, struck the monster's face with crackling fire.

The monster's struggles grew weaker and weaker, its crimson eyes suddenly gleamed, and it opened and closed its fangs with a hoarse voice, its claws slamming against the alloy door with a loud bang.

The lights in the hallway and inside the building were all turned off, and the power system on this floor was completely destroyed.

The emergency self-rescue device detected an overvoltage circuit and quickly burned out the fuse to protect itself.

Power off the entire floor.

The monster was now on its last legs, like a pool of viscous liquid, its back hunched over, revealing bony spikes resembling a fish spine.

It vomited a glob of liquid, tilted its head, its paws trembled uncontrollably, and its body radiated heat.

Amamiya Megumi dared not approach, her hands clenched tightly, her eyes fixed longingly on the direction of the door.

The young man, his body charred black, fell from the inner room, revealing half of his body and splashing water everywhere.

"Big brother!" Amamiya Megumi climbed off the chair and rushed forward.

Jin Ziyue's hair was charred and sticky from the electric shock, and his face was scalded and bloodied by the flashing sparks. He gritted his teeth and stood up, trembling all over.

His face was covered in blood and water, almost disfigured.

His chest was charred black, with bright red blood in the center. He had severe burns all over his body, with patches of red and purple on his skin.

The young man cast a reassuring glance at Amamiya Megumi, his slightly narrowed eyes suggesting he might faint at any moment. He saw the tearful girl and forced a smile as he endured the tearing of his wounds.

"It's alright, let's go quickly."

The monster, unable to move, stretched out its arms and sank back down like limp mud.

Jin Ziyue walked slowly, and the little girl could only carefully protect him.

"Brother, it's enough, I don't want you to die..."

The little girl followed silently behind with her head down, her voice soft and slightly trembling.

She was only up to Jin Ziyue's waist. Looking up at the young man's blood-stained face, she trembled inwardly.

"Megumi doesn't want anyone else to sacrifice themselves..." Megumi Amamiya's eyes were filled with tears.

Jin Ziyue leaned against the wall, panting, and managed a weak smile.

“Some sacrifices are inevitable. For those we protect, we can give up everything.” He looked at Megumi Amamiya and said, “It is with this kind of resolve that Dad is protecting Megumi.”

“I know, I know everything.” Megumi Amamiya’s doll-like face was streaked with tears. “But no matter what, Megumi doesn’t want the story in the TV series to happen to her. Suddenly so many monsters and bad people appeared. Life was so peaceful before, why, why are so many people dying now?”

Jin Ziyue was speechless for a moment.

"I don't want to be a hero anymore, I just want everyone to be safe and sound!"

“In the past, I always joked with Yingzi, always thinking that I was a hero who inherited my father’s legacy.”

Xiao Hui sniffled, her little face full of worry.

"But when I actually saw those monsters, I realized that my dad really wasn't a superhero. How could such a gentle dad have the courage to throw a punch at a monster?"

Jin Ziyue stopped, raised his hand, and saw that his hand was covered in blood. His movement froze in mid-air.

Megumi Amamiya took his hand without a care.

"Brother was so handsome and brave today. Xiao Hui saw that. It turns out that Superman only exists on TV. In reality, heroes are just ordinary people."

Jin Ziyue pursed his lips: "Let's go."

While they were talking, they had already walked to the stairwell, where the water had receded, leaving only shallow water stains.

After climbing a few more floors, it became rare to see anyone coming down. The fire in the entire building was fierce, with flames and billowing black smoke pouring down from above.

The power outage cast a red and black glow on the floors, and shadowy figures swayed amidst the flames, making it impossible to recognize faces.

In the 20-story office building, nearly half of the windows were filled with thick smoke, and short sirens could be heard outside.

The floor they arrived at was unusually quiet, with the lights still on, indicating that the fire had not yet spread there, and the power supply had miraculously remained uninterrupted.

"Let's go check it out. Maybe Mr. Amamiya didn't have time to leave and is hiding in a safe area."

"Ah."

As he stepped onto the walkway, Jin Ziyue frowned slightly.

This floor was so quiet. While the other floors were filled with cries for help and people fleeing, and the air was thick with panic, here everything was peaceful.

Looking out from a distance, you can see the office clerks sitting at their computer desks through the glass windows.

The clean floor, the dripping machinery, and the bubbling sound of boiling water from the kettle.

The lights were on, and even the "Welcome" electronic voice sounded somewhat strange the moment the automatic door opened.

"Xiao Hui, let's not watch anymore, let's go."

Jin Ziyue was wary of his surroundings, his shoulders tense, but his expression remained calm.

"Ah good."

The little girl nodded.

Just as they turned to leave, a sweet, soft voice filled the entire floor, singing a Japanese nursery rhyme with some effort.

Where are you?

"resting on the tip of that bamboo pole"

"It's that red dragonfly..."

Wow, thank you so much for all the votes! My manuscript is running low, so I'll speed up my writing!
