Chapter 57, Section 029: "Guardian"

Fujiwara Chizuru looked on with some surprise.

The Scythe-Winged Demon hovered high in the sky, its enormous wings spread wide like a world-destroying demon king, its roar rattling the windows of buildings. Its massive wings seemed to divide the sky, one half a blazing red, the other half a moonlit sky.

The building, which was peaceful just hours ago, is now engulfed in flames and explosions, its walls crackling and riddled with holes.

Everything felt so unreal.

It felt like being in a sci-fi blockbuster.

Their proud reasoning and arguments were utterly powerless in the face of such tyranny.

That night, countless citizens saw the raging, fiery demon with its enormous wings obscuring the moon through the live broadcast, casting a shadow over their hearts.

The adults gently comforted the frightened children, while the host showed stills from the tokusatsu series "Mithril Warriors" to introduce the origins of the monsters and highlighted the silver armor that circulated between the floors.

The urban legends that people talked about with great interest turned out to be true.

The monster appeared vividly before people's eyes.

Their long-standing comfortable life was completely overturned.

The rumors circulating online were impossible to suppress, and various videos and opinions spread through the internet.

The entire city, and even the entire district, is paying close attention to what's happening here.

The Metropolitan Police Department issued an urgent call, demanding that the panic be quelled as soon as possible, and that armed forces were en route.

Fujiwara Chizuru and the Director of the Kuroshiro Department, who arrived by car, began setting up a cordon and watching the situation above.

Overall, the armored warrior was at a disadvantage.

Jin Ziyue took a few steps, stepped onto the exposed building decorations, twisted his body and leaped, quickly closing in and kicking the monster in the face.

The Scythe-Winged Demon took to the air with its wings, causing him to miss his target. What awaited him was a free fall from a height of more than ten stories.

Jin Ziyue's attack failed, and he fell.

Those around were terrified.

After descending three or four stories, he raised his hand and launched a rope, hooking it onto the broken window. Using the force of the fall, he pulled, and the entire window snapped in two.

However, he used this momentum to leap into the air again, and near the uneven part of the wall, he gripped it with all five fingers, wearing through his leather gloves and leaving five bloody marks. He finally managed to grab the windowsill, flipped over, and hid in the red and black building.

That wasn't real armor at all; it was just a regular film suit. The only saving grace was that the material wasn't fusible plastic.

Jin Ziyue swiftly ripped off the protective armor on his shoulders, which had just been melted by the intense heat of the flames and turned into a charred mess. As he tore it off, his flesh and clothes peeled away together, but the expression beneath the mask didn't even blink.

The mask obstructed his vision, and his slow reactions were due to the lack of vision. However, as he became more familiar with the overall structure of the building, a map gradually formed in his mind, and he was able to climb along the uniform outer edge of the building without even looking at it.

Behind them, a dark shadow blocked the cave entrance, obscuring the moonlight.

The scythe-winged demon charged forward on the wind, its claws slashing out.

A cold glint flashed in Jin Ziyue's eyes.

Slipping sideways into the stairwell, the entire wall, like a block of tofu under the violent impact, was easily broken through by the monster. The wiring and steel bars inside the wall effectively restrained the Scythe-Winged Demon's movements.

Jin Ziyue gritted his teeth and, taking advantage of the fact that the Sickle Wing Demon's momentum had just stopped and its new strength had not yet been generated, and that its vision was obscured by the wall, leaped up and punched straight through the wall.

The target was the woman on his back.

Before Zuo Qianzi could react, the wall that had been knocked down came crashing back down. The Sickle-Winged Demon beneath him was kicked on the head and swayed to the side as the demon kicked rapidly. Zuo Qianzi was hit squarely by the force of the impact. His head buzzed, and he fell off his back like a sandbag that had been knocked down, crashing to the ground. His hands hit the ground repeatedly, and his lifeless eyes looked like those of a discarded rag doll.

The Scythe-Winged Demon snapped out of its daze, its claws already reaching upwards, its goat horns snapping back, and its narrow spatial membrane wings unfolding, the scythe-shaped blades at the edges sharp enough to cleave it in two.

Pounced empty.

Jin Ziyue crouched and rolled over from behind the Sickle-Winged Demon to dodge the scythe wings that slashed out to the sides. Just as he was about to finish off Zuo Qianzi, he caught a glimpse of the Sickle-Winged Demon's tail transforming into a spear that swept across the ground.

In a flash, Jin Ziyue became even more ruthless. He leaned close to Zuo Qianzi, grabbed the bald woman's wrist, pulled hard, and twisted his body to throw her up, sending her crashing into the scythe-winged demon's spear.

The woman's abdominal cavity, along with her clothing, was cut open; due to the distance, it was not cut horizontally in time.

Zuo Qianzi curled up in pain, vomiting blood.

The hand that Jin Ziyue had pulled was dislocated, but it remained in the gripping position. When a normal person swings their arm, it always becomes somewhat deformed near the shoulder blade joint, but Zuo Qianzi's entire arm was tightly folded behind her back.

The bald woman bit her lip, refusing to utter a sound, while blood trickled from between her teeth.

Just as Jin Ziyue was about to twist her neck, he suddenly heard a girl's cry for help from below.

The Scythe-Winged Demon was turning around, but the cramped space left it with little room to maneuver.

Not far away, the building was split open by a pillar of fire, and below a five-foot-wide chasm, all that remained was darkness and an unfathomable abyss, like a scene from hell.

From the ravine came the helpless cries of a little girl.

"Help!"

Jin Ziyue acted decisively, kicking the woman in the back of the head. The bald woman couldn't withstand the kick and was sent flying, spitting out foul blood in mid-air.

He ducked and plunged into the ravine.

……

Let's rewind a few minutes.

Megumi Amamiya huddled dejectedly in a corner, her two pigtails covered in dust, cradling the unconscious Eiko in her arms.

The black smoke from the fire made the little girl's face look ashen, with patches of red and black on her cheeks.

Bright flames danced in her eyes, as if they might burst forth at any moment and merge with the flames of reality.

The little girl shrank her feet and swallowed.

She covered Yingzi's mouth and nose with her sleeve, but she herself felt a little dizzy.

No, I can't sleep. She patted her face, which was burning hot from the flames.

She thought of her father, and of the man's gentle smile.

I haven't found my dad yet...

I haven't become someone I can rely on like my father...

She was terrified, but the more desperate the situation, the less she could show it.

Megumi Amamiya always believed that justice and miracles exist.

Nothing can easily defeat a person full of fighting spirit.

Let's sing...

she thinks.

A song that represents fathers.

She opened her mouth:

"As long as there is blue sky, the wind will keep turning time and space."

The girl's voice was clear and pure, a soft, devout chant.

"As long as courage exists, dreams can definitely come true."

It seemed so small amidst the crackling of the flames.

No matter how many tears stream down my face—

By this point in the song, Megumi Amamiya was already in tears. The raging flames knocked something down with a loud crash.

But she seemed to muster her courage and sang with difficulty, her eyes closed:

"I just want to protect you."

"No matter when, no matter where."

"I just want to protect you."

The raging fire mercilessly devoured everything; in the space where black and red intertwined, the girl's song was mournful and helpless.

The song, titled "I Just Want to Protect You," is a copy of a classical Chinese poem. Those who frequently watch tokusatsu (special effects) films should recognize it.
