Chapter 1214 Danger
Chapter 1214 Danger
The day went by quickly.
By 10 o'clock, everyone was theoretically free to move around, but the palace was now heavily guarded. They controlled most of the entrances and exits, leaving only a small, necessary passageway for people to walk through.
Everyone was uncomfortable because no matter what they did or where they went that day, they were under the watchful eyes of a group of soldiers—even the farm area was no exception.
This surveillance made all activities boring, even tedious. Instead of sticking to the morning classes, the teachers took everyone to the nearby lawn to play football.
In the afternoon, Lai Lin came to Si Lei to confirm their tasks for the next two days and found Si Lei sitting alone in the room with the curtains drawn, and only the pale blue screen illuminating the entire room.
Seeing some leftover buttered bread from breakfast beside her, Lai Lin looked at Si Lei and asked, "Didn't you have lunch?"
"Hmm?" Si Lei looked up and glanced at Lai Lin, then looked at the time on the screen. "...It's already this late."
"Aren't you hungry?" Lai Lin walked around behind her. "What are you doing?"
Si Lei switched screens: "Looking for information."
"Klara?" Lai Lin noticed the resume Si Lei had placed on the table. "You're investigating her?"
She glanced at Si Lei's blacked-out screen and belatedly realized, "...Should I not have asked?"
Si Lei smiled somewhat awkwardly and reached out to put Krall's resume back into the drawer.
"Is there anything suspicious about this person?" Lai Lin was still somewhat concerned. "You don't need to tell me the details. Just tell me, do I need to be more wary of this person, or—"
“No, no,” Si Lei quickly shook his head. “I just wanted to confirm her resume. She said she’s 24, which is too young to be an experienced veteran police officer, but too old to be an intern.”
Lai Lin's eyes flickered slightly: "...It really is! I hadn't even thought of that until you mentioned it."
"You came to see me because you want to...?"
“I’d like to talk to you about our division of labor going forward,” Lai Lin said. “Last night, Hershta said that the registration work would be handled by the two of us. We only have about a hundred people here at most, so I was thinking that we could have one person in charge, and we could set up a fixed registration point and take turns on duty to avoid wasting time.”
“Okay,” Si Lei stood up, pulled back the curtains, and stretched. “I want to find something to eat. Shall we talk on the way?”
"Ah."
……
At three o'clock, Boheng and Younis arrived at the old house on the farm.
As soon as the two arrived, Eunice suddenly jumped up: "Oh, right! Teacher, I have something to show you! Wait for me here!"
Boheng had barely turned his head when Younis had already run far away. He shouted at the girl's retreating figure, "What are you looking at? Stop what you're doing, we'll go back and check later—"
“Photos!” Eunice said. “It’s alright, it’ll be quick!”
Soon, only Boheng remained on the open space in front of the old house.
He could sense the gazes of the nearby soldiers on him, but perhaps because of Eunice's earlier address of "teacher," it seemed that no one had any doubts about him.
Boheng walked to the ruins of the old house. The house had been completely burned down, with broken, charred beams standing in the sun, and the collapsed roof covering a large area of the ground. Ashes and sawdust were scattered around the ruins, soaked and dried by alternating rain and sun into a layer of material with a texture like a thick carpet, which made a soft crunching sound when stepped on.
Protruding nails, broken tiles, cracked charcoal and planks... the fire had long been extinguished, but there was still a faint smell of burning.
A short while later, Gahodore arrived with two other girls. She saw Boheng in the distance and immediately quickened her pace.
Halfway there, Gabrielle realized that Chloe and Lü Qizhen hadn't kept up, so she quickly turned back and gestured for her friends to hurry up. The girls finally found their rhythm and headed towards the old house together.
At three o'clock in the afternoon, the sun cast a deep blue and gray hue onto the distant clouds. Time was passing from noon towards dusk; the sunlight was still bright and dazzling, but the signs of twilight were already beginning to appear. Everything under the sun was gilded, like a dreamlike bubble.
“Where is Eunice?” Gahodore asked. “Didn’t she come with you?”
“She’s here,” Boheng replied calmly. “She said she’s going back to get the photos to show me.”
“…Ah, she must be going to get that photo!” Gahodore realized and smiled immediately. “That’s good, if she goes to get it, I don’t have to go back.”
As she said this, she turned back and happily introduced Boheng to Lü Qizhen and Chloe.
Lü Qizhen and Chloe's expressions were both subtle; they found it amusing, but at the same time, they felt guilty and annoyed.
One person's affection for another can be so obvious, so... transparent.
Although Lü Qizhen and Boheng had a brief encounter at the restaurant that morning, he did not realize at the time that this "teacher" was the one that Jiaheduolei loved.
It's often when something happens to someone else that people are the first to realize the danger. Lü Qizhen observed Boheng. He looked to be about her age, but was at least ten years older than Jiaheduolei!
However, Boheng's attitude towards Jiahedolei seemed very restrained, even somewhat indifferent, which reassured Lü Qizhen slightly—in such a relationship, if someone in Boheng's position were to be overly enthusiastic, the consequences would likely be disastrous…
Chloe had already nonchalantly run to the audience seats to find a chair with her name on it. At this moment, she became very happy again: Lu Qizhen's ex-boyfriend was a control freak, and Gabrielle's sweetheart was an old man. It was clear that among the three, her taste was the best, which was a great victory.
"Found it!" Chloe suddenly exclaimed. She spotted Lü Qizhen's name in the front row, right next to her and Gahodorei's seats.
“I told you I wasn’t lying to you,” Lü Qizhen stepped forward. “How about it?”
Chloe lay back in her chair, gripping the armrest, letting the chair tilt backward.
Before them stood a makeshift lectern. The base of this lectern was made of wooden crates, the kind used to store apples or potatoes. These hollow crates were stacked tightly together, secured with nails, and covered with a red carpet.
Chloe watched for a while, then suddenly jumped off her chair and walked up to the podium.
She stood behind the podium and adjusted the microphone slightly. The microphone wasn't powered on yet, so it couldn't make a sound, but Chloe still coughed a few times.
"Quiet down, everyone," Chloe said, patting the table solemnly at the empty stands. "Don't whisper, go outside and say what you have to say—hey, I'm talking to you, you're the one laughing the loudest."
Lü Qizhen was already laughing so hard she was doubled over in her seat.
