Chapter 1076 "The Indescribable Thing"
Roland looked at the kings surrounding him, congratulating him, and couldn't help but feel a surge of emotion. He had united the best people of this era. Compared to the South during the War of the Ring, the kings of the North were now arguably the most reliable people of the time! As for the nobles of the South? Roland could only say that most of them were barely human!
"We're almost at Fengyun Peak!" Caslo reminded Roland.
Sure enough, Roland looked up and saw the Windrise Hills in the distance, the southernmost peak of which separated slightly from the other hills. Its summit was conical and somewhat flat; in ancient times, it served as the border between Azerdan and Rudol. Atop the tower at the summit was a Palantir (the Crystal of True Knowledge)! However, in 1409 of the Third Age, a large army marched from Angmar, crossed the River Greenspring, entered Kadoran, and besieged Windrise Hills, unstoppable. The Dúnedan were defeated, and Avileg, son of Aggleb, was killed. However, the Head of Nazghurs (the Witch-king of Angmar) failed to seize Palantir. It was safely returned to Fornost Ellein.
Now only the ruins of the fortress remain on this hill, the very place where Roland and Aragorn agreed to meet!
"The snow is still falling. Should we go up the mountain to set up camp? I haven't seen any smoke from the chimneys. That kid probably hasn't arrived yet!" Caslo said to Roland.
"I agree!" Bard raised his hand. After all, the Long Lake Town infantry of the River Valley State could be said to be the weakest in the Allied Forces. The fact that they gritted their teeth and braved the wind and snow to get here was already a testament to Bard's excellent training!
"Let's get ready to go up the mountain! Caslow, go check the sky and search northwards along the Eastern Road! We need to pinpoint the location of the Dunedan people! Hopefully, they haven't run into any trouble!" Roland shook his head and said.
"Understood!" Caslo dismounted and took out the dragon flute from his pocket. With just a gentle whistle, Kaldor's massive body burst into the air. Caslo, now on the dragon's back, nodded to everyone and then soared into the sky.
"Oh! I'm so envious of the dragon knights..." Thorin sighed softly as he watched Caslo soar into the sky, his eyes filled with longing.
"Just dream about it. You Ilubo people can't raise dragons!" Whitewing patted Thorin on the shoulder meaningfully.
"A dragon? Didn't one come back then? What? Doesn't Lonely Mountain like it?" Thranduil asked calmly.
"..." Thorin raised an eyelid. Smaug, that blockhead, who could possibly take care of him? Was it a matter of whether the dwarves liked him or not? His entire lair was destroyed!
"Ahem, dragon eagles are actually quite good, affordable and easy to raise!" Roland coughed lightly to ease the awkwardness. The dwarves' ancestral dragon eagles are few in number, and although their combat power is pitiful compared to dragons, they are still dragon-blooded creatures, aren't they?
"Sigh..." Thorin glanced regretfully at the sky and silently looked away.
"Besides, your legs can't even reach the dragon saddle!" Bard teased, poking Thorin's shoulder armor with his hand, his eyes full of mockery. When Thorin turned around, he even gestured with his hand to show the length, which made Thorin so angry that his beard bristled.
"Ugh, that's a personal attack! If you get beaten to death, don't come looking for us!" Roland decisively stepped aside to avoid being accidentally injured by Thorin's sudden attack.
"Hehe! I was just kidding, do you believe me?" Seeing the crowd silently retreat and form a circle, Bard quickly ran away.
"Tsk, I'd love to see what it's like when they fight!" Thranduil crossed his arms, looking on with amusement.
……
"How are we supposed to find people in this awful weather! Are you using the Dragon Eye as a detection magic matrix?" Caslo started complaining as soon as he took to the air for a while.
"What are you yelling about! Isn't it mainly me watching?" Seeing Caslo complaining, Kaldo below couldn't help but retort.
"I'm just helping you fill in the gaps, aren't I?" Caslo stared at his eyes, which had turned into vertical pupils, and scanned his surroundings.
“There are no signs of human activity around. We need to expand our search area! They might be stuck on something!” Kaldo’s voice rang in Caslo’s mind. After all, it was more convenient to communicate by thought than to get caught in a blizzard.
"Let's go check it out! I hope that kid isn't dead!" Caslo wished in his heart. "He won't die. Gao Di is a king, and someone protected by elves isn't some stray dog on the roadside!" Kaldo saw things clearly. For the xenophobic elves to raise Gao Di from a young age, he was an expensive pawn. How could he die in the wilderness before he was even put to use? Wouldn't that mean the elves' investment was wasted?
……
"Whoosh..." A trail of white mist, like a bolt of lightning, spread through the snowstorm as a group of cavalrymen, wrapped tightly in leather and linen, stumbled along.
"Chieftain...we're running low on supplies!" A northern ranger walked over through the snow, his face etched with gloom beneath his hood.
“Weren’t we well prepared before we set off?” Aragorn asked, puzzled.
"It took us a lot of time to gather and wait for our scattered tribesmen, and we also wasted supplies by going around the orc camp in the wasteland..." the Northern Ranger said in a low voice.
"Damn it! We're already several days late!" Aragorn's face was full of bitterness. The time agreed upon with Roland had passed, and he didn't know if Roland's army was still waiting for him.
"Tell everyone to be patient and conserve their rations to sustain the warhorses... including mine!" Aragorn gritted his teeth and decided to let everyone go hungry. The soldiers could skip a few meals, but the warhorses absolutely could not. Without these hardworking companions, no one could survive this harsh snowstorm!
……
"How many days has it been? Could this guy really be dead?" Roland looked at the snowflakes fluttering in the sky, a shadow falling over his heart. At first, he thought it would be fine if Aragorn took a day or two to gather his people, but now a week had passed and there was still no sign of him, which gave Roland a sense of foreboding.
“General Caslo has already gone to look for him!” Marquis Al-Tegran Franz whispered to Roland.
"Where's Weiss?" Roland raised an eyelid, only then remembering that he had brought two dragon riders with him.
“Well, Sir Vess has been investigating with General Caslo these past few days!” Marquis Al-Tegran Franz reported after a moment’s thought.
"By the Dragon God! We can't find either of the two dragon riders. Alright! We can start preparing for Aragorn's funeral! Remember to go back and prepare a generous gift for King Elrond. After all, he raised Aragorn, so it's only right that we go to him to pay our respects!" Roland waved his hand, ready to accept the outcome of Aragorn's misfortune.
"The Dúnedan people are here! Your Majesty, you should come out and see!" Caslo's voice rang out from outside the tent.
"That kid is still alive?" Roland followed the sound and then saw Caslo with a strange expression in the camp.
"Where are the Dúnedan people?" Roland asked.
"What about behind them? But they're not in good shape. Weiss is following them from the sky. I came back first!" Caslo nodded to Roland.
"Come on! Let's go give him a piece of our mind! It's not good for the clan leader to have no sense of time!" Roland patted Marquis Al-Tegran Franz, intending to pull his mouth along and give Aragorn a good scolding for wasting everyone's time.
……
"Holy crap! Who are these people?" Roland's eyes nearly welled up with tears as he arrived at the camp entrance. The strange stench of various smells, including foul odors and fishy smells, combined with hundreds of dark, "unidentifiable" objects, almost made Roland think that Cthulhu had invaded Middle-earth.
