On the east and west sides of Maitreya Buddha are the four heavenly kings, each guarding one side, and the magic tools they hold are sword, pipa, green umbrella and silver snake.

These four instruments represent respectively: wind, tune, rain, and smoothness.

Offering incense to the four heavenly kings, the prayer is: "May the world be peaceful and the grains plentiful."
