Chapter 1929, Section 562: Stationed in Meteorite Town

"No wonder Kasha said they saw Annan Reeves the other day, it was actually true!"

"Of course it's true. You think I'm lying to you?"

"Who would have thought that Lord Annan would suddenly come to this remote place of ours?"

Actually, this place isn't remote, but its location is awkward. It's neither a highly valued border area nor a commercially developed core region. It also lacks local specialties and its tax revenue isn't high, so it's been largely ignored for years.

"Did the Eighth Squad accompany us for a period of time when we set off, or did they?"

Deputy Commander Brown replied, "They have other missions."

The dwarves roam this area, and the eighth squad is responsible for finding them.

The information was very clear: it said that you could find it by digging deeper into a deep pit and then following the underground river downstream. It was as clear as if I had personally walked that path.

After answering the squad leaders' questions, Vice Commander Brown's expression turned serious:
"Our mission is to observe the local subspace, remember every word I am about to say, and tell your soldiers."

"The subspace can affect our mind and emotions, so the rules for this operation are: First, if you suddenly find yourself unable to control your emotions, or if you find a soldier quietly crying, getting angry, or talking to himself, immediately move away from him and the area, and notify your superior."

"Secondly, you are carrying out special orders issued by the Ministry of Military Affairs. Your family, friends, and acquaintances will not suddenly appear here. If you find them suddenly appearing in front of you, do not believe them and do not let them get close."

"Third, if you encounter ratmen, demons, alien races, or crazed soldiers, retaliate as best you can without harming them. They are likely your allies under the influence of the warp. Keep your distance and shout to notify those nearby as soon as possible."

"If you notice any of the above situations or other unusual circumstances, immediately and loudly notify those around you, understand?"

Instead of their usual crisp and efficient responses, the team leaders exchanged bewildered glances.

……

The camp's watchtowers, fences, and tents were set up in just half a day.

After completion, the soldiers of the 17th Squad began patrolling along the routes prescribed by Deputy Commander Brown to ensure that the three subspace passages were under constant surveillance.

The bizarre mission and three rules of conduct roused them.

The mayor was initially worried that the soldiers who suddenly arrived had ulterior motives, but seeing that they were just patrolling the town every day without interruption, and that they didn't even buy food in the town, the town returned to its usual peace.

Of course, some formalities had to be done, such as cleaning up the sewage-filled streets and sending the homeless to abandoned houses to avoid offending the important figures.

After several days of tense patrols, the 17th squad was informed by Vice Commander Brown that the warp had been destroyed and they were only on guard against a resurgence. Now it seemed that everything was fine.

However, the order had no time limit; they were to remain stationed there until news arrived from the north that the ratman high priest had been beheaded and the war was over.

The soldiers' mindset shifted from being on high alert to being on regular duty.

Late that night, as usual, the patrolling soldiers crossed over three subspace passages.

Behind the brightly lit windows of the town hall, silhouettes swayed, accompanied by the chatter of men and the laughter of women, creating a lively atmosphere of a banquet.

The patrolling soldier with a long beard glanced enviously, then pulled his coat tighter under his leather armor and walked past the mansion with his squad.

boom!
Shortly after they left... a muffled thud came from the window, and a blood-covered face slammed against it, slowly sliding down.

In the town hall, a massacre was taking place, or perhaps it had already ended.

The scene the patrolling soldiers saw through the window was a chaotic spectacle: several small demons crawled into the bodies of wealthy men, who had been separated and gutted, and manipulated their bodies, causing them to writhe in a chilling manner in front of the window. Lifelike voices and laughter emanated from their mouths. The men weren't even dead yet; their eyes were filled with terror as they endured the immense pain of the demons devouring and manipulating them from within.

In the hall, the mayor, along with his relatives and servants, were arranged in a bloody magic circle, unable to move, with blood gushing from the wounds on their limbs.

They were still alive, watching as the demon wizards in the arena arranged them into an incredibly evil blasphemous magic circle.

The intense emotion was like a giant torch, forming a clear spot of light in the subspace.

The warp anchor destroyed by the Nighthawk has resurfaced.
In the center of the hall, a demon wizard with a chest cavity split open by ribs, resembling wings or spider legs, chanted obscure demonic words.

The surrounding light flickered, growing increasingly dim.

All the pain was drawn out and gathered on the blasphemous magic circle, forming a sparse band of light.

The demon wizard muttered, as if to say, not enough...

It pulled a spider from its waist pocket; its entire body, including its limbs, was covered in eyes. As soon as it appeared, all its eyes snapped open, emitting a sharp, agonizing scream—

Click——!
The demon wizard stuffed it into its mouth and chewed it forcefully. A wail rippled between its teeth, and with each chew, colorful smoke billowed from its mouth, merging into the band of light in mid-air.

Chewing until not a single wisp of smoke appeared, the demon wizard spat out the spider remnants sealed by hundreds of tormented souls.

The band of emotional light grew longer, and the magnificent subspace behind it was faintly visible.

But... it's still not enough.

The demon wizard changed the incantation and began chanting yet another obscure spell.

The bands of light in mid-air began to tremble, like an overturned palette of paints, blurring, permeating, and flowing together.

As the demon wizard finished chanting the last few syllables of his spell, the band of light suddenly exploded, passing through the windows, doors, walls, and ceiling of the hall, scattering throughout the entire Meteor Town.

……

The patrol team, having completed its patrol, withdrew to the camp outside the basin.

"Harry, give me the torch." The bearded soldier squeezed next to his comrade holding the torch, almost snatching it from him, and said shivering, "Why is it so cold today..."

"Cold?" The soldier named Harry looked at the shivering bearded man with a puzzled expression. "Are you sick?"

The bearded man was unaware that he was staring at the torch, holding his hand close to it. He could smell the burning of the fur, but he still couldn't draw any heat from it. It was as if a hole had been opened in his body, and cold air was seeping into his bones, making his soul tremble.

"Maybe he's about to awaken his magical talent. He's always boasted about it." The soldier walking behind said with a hint of sarcasm.

Harry shoved him: "Shut up."

The soldier who was pushed looked bewildered: "Harry, don't think you can boss me around just because you're the captain. You lowly man!"

Harry ignored him and continued on his way.

He hadn't walked a few steps when he suddenly heard soldiers exclaim in surprise behind him.
