Chapter 546 Manhattan Cohabitation Guide
Chapter 546 Manhattan Cohabitation Guide (Part 2)
Unlike Zhao Youzhen, who exercises every day and is in great shape, radiating warmth like a little heater, Xu Yiru, a quiet girl who spends most of her time studying indoors and doesn't move much when she's not studying, is particularly afraid of the cold.
Of course, our Xiaoru also has something to say—you, Youzhen, were born on the Korean Peninsula and are used to sub-zero temperatures. Me? I grew up in a subtropical region! I went to college in Los Angeles with a Mediterranean climate, and I've hardly ever seen snow in my life. How could I possibly have developed a talent for being resistant to the cold!
Thus, Xu Yiru, as she descended the gangway, presented a winter look that was completely different from Zhao Youzhen's.
If I had to find a description, then our little Ru would be a fluffy little animal that has wrapped itself up tightly in layers of soft fabric in preparation for winter.
Her knee-length, off-white Moncler down jacket was unusually fluffy, making her look like a moving mochi. On her head was a handcrafted, off-white chunky knit hat, also from Moncler, with a soft pom-pom on top and a brim pulled low, almost covering her eyebrows, making her already small face appear even more delicate and pitiful.
Beneath the down jacket, a light gray cashmere scarf was wrapped several times around her neck, almost completely obscuring the lower half of her face. Han Yi was almost certain that underneath the scarf, she was wearing at least a turtleneck sweater and thermal underwear. On her lower body, she wore fleece-lined leggings, over which she wore loose but sufficiently thick Moncler sweatpants. On her feet were a pair of UGG snow boots that looked incredibly warm, the uppers undoubtedly covered in soft, fluffy fleece that looked exceptionally appealing.
Unlike other young girls, Xiaoru has no idol baggage when it comes to whether or not to wear thermal underwear. As long as it makes her feel warm, she will put it on regardless of whether it looks good or not.
She walked rather cautiously, partly because her layers of clothing made movement a little difficult, and partly because she seemed afraid the cold wind might seep in through any gap. Her eyes, peeking out from between her woolen hat and scarf, were watery from the cold and were anxiously searching for Han Yi on the tarmac.
This fully armed, cold-fearing appearance contrasts sharply and endearingly with Zhao Youzhen's upright and spirited posture even in the cold wind.
Standing in front of the car, carefully observing Xu Yiru, Han Yi couldn't help but sigh: If an ordinary girl were wrapped up this tightly, she would probably lose her beauty. But Xiaoru is different. No matter how thick or conservatively she is dressed, as long as her impeccable face can still be seen, she is still undoubtedly a perfect score.
Especially when that face broke into a bright smile upon spotting him.
"Easy!"
After a highly recognizable cheer, the little penguin waddled and quickened its pace, plunging headfirst into Han Yi's arms.
"I miss you..." Xiaoru buried her head in Han Yi's chest and said in a muffled voice.
"I missed you too." Han Yi cupped Xiaoru's face in his hands, his brows furrowing slightly. "Did you lie to me again and secretly stay up all night studying?"
"Ah, I didn't..." Xu Yi subconsciously reached out to cover the faint dark circles under her eyes, then realized that this action had already given her away. The Taiwanese girl, mimicking Jerry from "Tom and Jerry," grinned awkwardly and embarrassedly, "Well, I can't help it, I've taken a lot of courses this semester, and they're a bit difficult."
"Next semester, you're going to stick to sixteen credits, no more, understand?"
"Okay." Xiaoru puffed out her cheeks, unable to hide the smile on her face. "I understand."
"I know, but you're not going to change, right?" Han Yi knew Xiao Ru's temperament perfectly well. "You agreed to my request in front of me, and then you turned around and maxed out all eighteen credits, even paying extra to get twenty more. Am I right?"
"I want to graduate as soon as possible," Xiaoru giggled. "I'll try to finish my master's and bachelor's degrees in four years, so that..."
Finding her life plan completely blank after her bachelor's and master's degrees, and unable to imagine what kind of relationship she would have with Han Yi after graduation, Xiaoru's voice lowered slightly.
"Anyway, if you graduate earlier, Mom won't have to work so hard, and you won't have to worry so much."
"I know you're a sensible and well-behaved girl." Han Yi gently stroked Xiaoru's cheek affectionately. "But some things shouldn't be rushed. University life is so short and precious. If we can slow down and experience more, wouldn't that be nice?"
"Who am I supposed to experience this with? You?" Xiaoru looked at him resentfully. "You only have a few classes each week, and you don't even have to take the final exam before you fly away. Who am I supposed to experience this with?"
“If it weren’t for something going on in New York, I would definitely stay in Los Angeles and go to your apartment every day to cook for you.”
"A bare hand?" Xiaoru grabbed Han Yi's hand and waved it in front of his eyes. "More like a black hand."
"Black hand? Fine, just wait until we get back and you'll see how ruthless I am in dealing with this."
Amidst the banter, Meridian Airlines ground staff had already retrieved the luggage from the cabin and placed it into the trunk Han Yi had opened. Hearing the trunk close, Han Yi turned around and greeted Tom Buffington, who was waiting beside him with a smile, as if nothing was amiss.
"Thank you, Tom. How was your day?"
“Everything is fine, Mr. Han.” Tom bowed slightly to the two of them and smiled. “Ms. Xu, welcome to Tetborough. We hope you have a pleasant two days in New York. We look forward to serving you again.”
"Thank you very much, Mr. Buffington. I'll need your help with the arrangements for my return to Taipei later."
"Don't worry, Miss Xu, everything has been arranged."
“Perfect…Alright, since we’ll see you again in two days, Tom, I’ll say goodbye properly then.”
"Of course, Mr. Han. Please don't let me interfere with the rest of your schedule today."
Goodbye, Tom, have a nice day.
"You too, Mr. Han."
As always, Tom Buffington turned and left deftly, without a trace of curiosity or prying into the private life of a billionaire.
He'd been Jet Linx's regional manager in Teterborough for some time now, and he'd seen it all.
Have you ever seen a celebrity travel with all three wives?
The three wives were quite close, their relationship was like that of best friends.
With such outstanding examples before us, what's so surprising about Han Yi using the same private jet to pick up and drop off two girlfriends a few days apart?
This kind of commonplace routine doesn't even make it onto the lunch tables of Meridian Airlines' ordinary employees.
"This car... wasn't bought, was it?" Sitting in the passenger seat, Xu Yiru glanced at the familiar logo in the center of the steering wheel and asked in a low voice.
"Definitely not." Han Yi patted the steering wheel, his face beaming with pride that said, "I didn't waste money." "It was rented."
"That's good." Xiaoru breathed a sigh of relief. "We don't get to drive here very often anyway, so it's better to save some money."
"Actually, we originally planned to rent any SUV, but you like this one the most and are most used to sitting in it, so we rented this one."
Every girl has her dream car. For Youzhen, it's the Aston Martin DB11 she shares with him. For Xiaoru, it's the Bentley Bentayga that Hanyi bought for daily use.
She actually liked the Ferrari very much, but she always felt a bit pressured driving it every day. The Bentley Bentayga, on the other hand, was just right. It was a luxury car, but in Los Angeles, especially Beverly Hills, it wasn't so extravagant that it was uncommon. She could drive it freely without worrying about the stares of pedestrians.
More importantly, Xiaoru has always admired Bentley's design style; it's not as heavy as Rolls-Royce, nor as ostentatious as McLaren, but rather luxurious in just the right way. And being petite, she especially appreciates the sense of security that SUVs provide.
Therefore, the Bentley Bentayga became the car she used most frequently when traveling with Han Yi.
To cater to her preferences, Han Yi rented a Bentayga with the same color scheme and interior during the two days they spent alone together, as a way of showing his respect and attention to her.
"I'm not that picky," Xiaoru said coquettishly, giving him a sidelong glance. "Besides, this isn't the car I like to sit in the most, the one I'm most used to sitting in."
Which one is that?
“The Ford Escape.” Xiao Ru sat up straight with an air of seriousness and patted the seat. “The seat isn’t leather; it’s all fabric.”
"Wow, Xiaoru!" Han Yi's eyes widened, his face full of disbelief. "So you've been complaining about me all along, haven't you? And yet I've been driving you around for so long!"
"I didn't mean to complain!" Xiaoru's voice became even higher and shriller with anxiety. "I'm just reminiscing, okay? I miss the time when it was just the two of us, eating at restaurant after restaurant in LA..."
"Yi Yi, why do you have to have so much money?"
After a brief silence, Xiaoru pursed her lips and said this.
"I wish you were still the same as when I first met you."
"Haha, well... there's nothing I can do about it."
The stark contrast between this life and the previous one, coupled with Xiao Ru's perhaps unintentional or casual little expectation at this moment, made Han Yi feel as if he were living in a spicy and bitter black comedy script, both funny and sad, speechless.
“However…” Han Yi licked his lips, trying to pull his thoughts back to the reality he had to face in this life, “Although money is something that can’t be changed, perhaps we can recreate the life we had with just the two of us.”
"Hmm?" Xiaoru tilted her head. "What do you mean?"
“Corey and the others have already gone home for the holidays.” Han Yi started the car and drove skillfully toward the exit. “Today, there are only the two of us in the apartment.”
"Really?"
"real!"
"That's wonderful!" Xiaoru exclaimed, her hands clasped to her chest, her face flushed with excitement. "That's wonderful! That's wonderful! That's wonderful!"
"So happy?" Han Yi smiled and glanced at her. "Is it because you can't stand Corey, or Sophia?"
“No, Corey is great, and Sophia is great too, it’s just… with them around, we can’t really have any alone time together.” Xiaoru was clearly very happy, squirming in the passenger seat like a fluffy little white worm. “Don’t you think this is a godsend? We can spend the next two days together. You don’t have to work, and I don’t have to study, just like… a couple who came to New York to make a living and live together for Christmas. Isn’t that wonderful, really!”
"Now that you mention it, it really is great."
"Right, right?" Xiaoru nodded vigorously. "Doesn't it feel just like that? A couple who have just graduated choose to come to a big city with many opportunities to start over in order to build their own little home and stay together for a long time, and face the hardships of life together."
"Who lives a hard life and lives in a penthouse in One57?" This is exactly what Han Yi likes to do: pour cold water on others' enthusiastic fantasies—very Chandler-esque.
"Oh, these are all minor details that can be ignored." The more she thought about it, the sweeter it felt. Xiaoru smiled like a little Buddha. "Yiyi, promise me, for the next forty-eight hours, let's be a couple like this, okay?"
"Okay." Han Yi readily agreed. "So now... it's like I'm coming to the airport to pick you up from your business trip and take you home?"
"Yes, yes, yes!" Xiaoru really liked Han Yi's ability to add realism to the story.
"So, after we pick you up, which restaurant should we go to for dinner?"
"How could a young couple who are just starting out and might still be saving money to buy a house possibly go out to eat on Tuesdays?"
Xiaoru raised her index finger and carefully corrected his logical error.
"After we put our luggage down, let's go to the supermarket to buy some things and then go home to cook dinner!"
"When living together, this is how you should live frugally!"
