Chapter 1009 Making a Phone Call
Lin Beichen remained unmoved, adopting an attitude that he would not agree no matter how much you argued.
Seeing his reaction, Xu Wei became even more insistent: "Instructor, he's also my brother. I really can't stand idly by. So, I must stay here."
Xu Wei's attitude was very firm. This was probably the first time he had so clearly defied Lin Beichen's guidance in all the time he had been taught.
Lin Beichen wasn't angry, but he felt somewhat helpless. After all, it was a token of his affection, and the other party had already seen through it.
Lin Beichen pondered for a moment and finally nodded.
Xu Wei was overjoyed and repeatedly expressed his gratitude: "Thank you! Thank you, instructor!"
He then followed behind Chan Ka-lok.
The three of them searched every street and alley in the area, practically plastering Hao Jianhua's photo on every corner, but still couldn't find him.
During a break, Chen Jiale asked worriedly, "Instructor, haven't they called us yet?"
Upon hearing the words "make a phone call," Xu Wei immediately looked at Lin Beichen with a puzzled expression, as if waiting for an explanation.
Lin Beichen stared at the water glass in front of him and shook his head. Even he himself wondered why that person hadn't contacted them yet.
Xu Wei looked around warily and asked cautiously, "Could it be... that they might hurt Hao Jianhua?"
The answer to this question is actually quite obvious.
Everyone knew the truth, but no one wanted to believe the outcome would be like this.
Lin Beichen shook his head and retorted, "I don't think so."
"What do you mean?" the two asked Lin Beichen at the same time.
Lin Beichen pondered for a moment and tried to express his guess: "The other party went to such great lengths to lure us here, it's unlikely they would do anything drastic to Hao Jianhua."
His tone was somewhat uncertain; even he himself wasn't entirely sure of the other person's intentions. But if he agreed with Xu Wei's statement, then the three of them would just have to sit together and worry.
Xu Wei nodded in understanding, but still expressed his concerns: "Even so, I'm still very worried about Hao Jianhua's safety. After all, several days have passed and there's still no news."
His words were like a boulder thrown into a deep pool, stirring up huge waves and making the worries that had been building up in Lin Beichen and Chen Jiale's hearts for days impossible to hide.
Chen Jiale looked at Lin Beichen hesitantly, wanting to say something, but not knowing where to begin.
However, Xu Wei hadn't been with them these past few days and didn't know the specifics of the situation. He simply analyzed earnestly, "The longer it drags on, the worse it will be for Hao Jianhua. He could very well be in mortal danger."
Upon thinking of this, Xu Wei instinctively covered his mouth, nervously glancing around, afraid of being overheard. He leaned forward slightly and lowered his voice again, saying, "Should we call the police? Waiting like this really isn't a solution."
Seeing that Lin Beichen remained silent, Xu Wei anxiously took out his phone to call the police.
Before he could even dial the number, Lin Beichen grabbed his hand.
Xu Wei looked up in confusion: "Instructor, what's going on...? Are we just going to wait here like this?"
Lin Beichen frowned unconsciously, his expression turning serious: "Did I just say all that for nothing?"
"I..." Xu Wei was speechless for a moment.
He didn't think he had done anything wrong, but Lin Beichen's attitude left him completely baffled.
"Don't call the police yet. Those people probably just want to cause me trouble; they wouldn't go so far as to kill Hao Jianhua," Lin Beichen said expressionlessly.
Xu Wei did not loosen his grip on the phone.
"They must have their reasons for leading us here. If they really wanted to kill Hao Jianhua, why go through all the trouble of bringing us here before doing it?" Lin Beichen retorted.
This question stumped the two of them—and that was the crux of the whole matter.
"So, if we rashly call the police now and are discovered by those hiding in the shadows, it might cause other trouble," Lin Beichen added seriously.
Although Lin Beichen did not explicitly state what the "other troubles" were, everyone understood that it referred to Hao Jianhua's safety.
Upon hearing this, Xu Wei immediately nodded repeatedly, abandoning his idea of calling the police, and apologized for his earlier rash behavior: "Instructor, I'm sorry, I was too hasty and didn't understand the whole story before..."
"It's nothing." Lin Beichen shook his head, not blaming him.
After resting, the three returned to their temporary guesthouse.
Before even entering the door, Chen Jiale was already getting restless and suggested, "I'm not tired yet, how about I go look around somewhere else?"
He looked at the two of them with a questioning gaze.
These are extraordinary times, and one shouldn't act alone, but Chen Jiale felt that the other party's target was Hao Jianhua and Lin Beichen, and had nothing to do with him. Besides, he figured he'd just wander around the neighborhood and nothing would happen.
Lin Beichen thought for a moment, but before he could answer, Xu Wei couldn't help but advise, "You'd better not go out. It's not safe outside right now. What if something happens to you?"
"Pah! Can't you wish me well for once? I'm just going for a walk, what's the big deal?" Chen Jiale said dismissively.
He was somewhat casual with Xu Wei, even thinking the latter was making a mountain out of a molehill. But when facing Lin Beichen, his attitude immediately changed completely, and he asked respectfully, "Instructor, is it alright?"
Lin Beichen considered it for a while and finally nodded.
Xu Wei, who was standing to the side, couldn't stand it anymore and hurriedly reminded him, "Instructor, are you really going to let him go? This..."
"Hey, stop nagging here, I'll be right back!" Chen Jiale immediately interrupted him, afraid that Lin Beichen would change his mind, and quickly waved and left.
He had only planned to go out for a stroll, but he didn't expect that he would be targeted just a few steps away from the guesthouse.
However, the usually oblivious Chen Jiale did not notice and instead walked into the deep and dark alley—he was unfamiliar with the area and unknowingly wandered into the depths of the alley.
Just as Chen Jiale was about to turn around and leave, he heard a series of chaotic footsteps behind him.
The alley was pitch black, and he could only rely on his hearing to judge the number of people on the other side.
As the footsteps drew closer, Chen Jiale felt a pang of panic and shouted, "What exactly do you want?"
The roar subsided, and the footsteps paused for a moment.
Just when Chen Jiale thought the other party had been scared away, the footsteps sounded again and rushed towards him aggressively.
Soon after, Chen Jiale felt surrounded by a chilling killing intent, and he instinctively assumed a defensive stance.
Before he could even see who had attacked him, he was already crashing to the ground.
The group came and went in a hurry, leaving only Chen Jiale, covered in injuries, dragging his aching and exhausted body back with difficulty.
They happened to run into Lin Beichen, who had gone out to check if Chen Jiale had returned.
Seeing his bruised and swollen face, Lin Beichen immediately stepped forward to help him up, asking with concern as they walked inside, "What happened? You just went out for a bit, how did you get like this?" Lin Beichen's question only made Chen Jiale look even more miserable, and he said aggrievedly, "I don't know either, Instructor. I swear I really didn't do anything this time, and I was suddenly beaten up."
Despite Chen Jiale's serious expression, Lin Beichen found it hard to believe this bizarre description.
"How is that possible?" Lin Beichen expressed his doubt.
They were indeed being monitored recently, but the way they committed the crime in the street is not like the style of the group that kidnapped Hao Jianhua.
Besides, this place is crowded and full of eyes and ears. Aren't they afraid of leaving clues?
Seeing that Lin Beichen didn't believe him, Chen Jiale suddenly straightened up, wanting to argue.
This movement aggravated the wound on his back, causing him to grimace in pain. Just as he was about to cry out in pain, blood began to seep from the crack at the corner of his mouth, and for a moment he didn't know what expression to make in response.
Seeing his pained expression, Lin Beichen helped him up while scolding him, "Tell me slowly, don't get so agitated."
Overwhelmed with excitement, Chen Jiale finally nodded: "Instructor, I really didn't lie to you this time. It really was a group of people who rushed up and hit me. I didn't even see their faces clearly."
Lin Beichen still looked at Chen Jiale with doubt.
The other person got impatient and, in a fit of despair, said, "Instructor, why would I come back covered in injuries? What good would that do me? Look at these injuries, they're all real. This isn't a joke."
Hearing him say that, Lin Beichen believed him a little more.
He instinctively asked, "They left after the fight... Was it a robbery?"
Carlos Chan immediately shook his head in denial.
Lin Beichen had already helped him into the room. Xu Wei, who was packing his things, was startled to see him like this. He quickly put down what he was holding and ran over, asking worriedly, "What happened to you? You got hurt after only being out for a short while. Did you offend someone?"
Upon hearing this, Chen Jiale rolled his eyes at him, then explained helplessly, "Who could I possibly offend in this unfamiliar place?"
"Then why are you covered in injuries?" Xu Wei continued to press.
Lin Beichen, standing to the side, casually remarked, "They probably encountered a robbery."
Seeing that Chen Jiale could still argue back, Xu Wei guessed he was alright, and while talking, he went to find the first-aid kit: "But don't robbers also have to choose their targets? Does he look like a rich person?"
Upon hearing this, Chen Jiale became displeased and, while rummaging through his wallet and phone, retorted, "They didn't rob me; it seemed like they came specifically to beat me up, and then they just left."
At this moment, Xu Wei had already found the first-aid kit. While applying medicine to Chen Jiale, he speculated, "Is that so? Is it really because you deserve a beating?"
Compared to Chen Jiale, who got beaten up, Xu Wei's words were even more infuriating.
Seeing that he could not communicate with him, Chen Jiale simply stopped talking.
After hearing Chen Jiale's description, Lin Beichen felt that the group was clearly deliberately causing trouble. But since they had already kidnapped Hao Jianhua, why were they provoking Chen Jiale? What was the connection between the two? Who was their target?
This series of questions, like a tangled mess, kept swirling in Lin Beichen's mind.
The three remained silent for a long time before a knock on the door suddenly sounded.
They immediately asked warily, "Who?"
The owner, who was standing behind the door, was taken aback at first, then realized what he meant and said, "It's me! The food is ready, come and eat."
"Okay," Chen Jiale replied.
The pale yellow light from the lamplight mingled with the soft white glow of the streetlights outside the window, casting a warm glow over what would otherwise be a dull night.
However, the three of them remained in low spirits, staring at the food in their bowls but barely touching their chopsticks.
The boss standing next to them was a worldly man, and he could tell at a glance that they were preoccupied.
Seeing the three looking dejected, the owner tapped the rim of the bowl with his chopsticks.
The three of them immediately looked up alertly, staring at him with puzzlement. Although they were curious, they had no intention of asking any questions.
The boss flashed his signature smile: "Young people get discouraged by small things. Your ability to withstand pressure isn't very good."
He offered his assessment of the three men with the air of someone who had been through it all, leaving them completely bewildered.
After a while, Xu Wei realized what was happening, put down his chopsticks, and explained seriously, "That's not how it is. We're not frowning because of a little setback. It's because our friend has gone missing. We've been looking for him for many days and are very worried, which is why we're like this."
The boss didn't care why his friend had disappeared. He still looked at Xu Wei with disbelief, still thinking that they were upset about something trivial. He also thought it was shameful for a grown man not to admit his unhappiness.
Xu Wei intended to offer a simple explanation, but he didn't expect the boss's gaze to be so unsettling.
He decided he had to make things clear in order to dispel his boss's prejudice.
Xu Wei simply put down his chopsticks and prepared to argue his case.
The other person waved his hand dismissively, saying, "Young man, I'm not trying to criticize you, but you always have a ton of excuses, just trying to convince me. Do you really think it's necessary?"
“How can it be unnecessary? We’re not bothered by trivial matters, nor are we incapable of handling setbacks; we’re just worried about our friend! Do you understand now?” Xu Wei was somewhat displeased, and his voice involuntarily rose a few decibels.
They've had enough of a bad time these past few days, and now they're being misunderstood.
They are, after all, the owner's guests. They don't expect to be treated like honored guests, but they shouldn't be judged maliciously without any regard for the facts, or even viewed with such eyes.
Xu Wei had been holding in a lot of anger, and now he finally found an outlet for it.
The boss originally only wanted to make a few jokes, but he didn't expect this young man to take it so seriously. Even if he was serious, he was unwilling to admit his vulnerability.
He didn't want to argue any further, so he nodded perfunctorily: "Yes, yes, you're right, I was wrong, okay? You're not fragile, you have a strong ability to withstand pressure, I was just blind and misjudged you, is that alright?"
Hearing his sarcastic tone, Xu Wei felt even more suffocated.
But the boss's next words made him even angrier.
"I really don't understand why someone so young keeps harping on such trivial matters. Why don't you use that energy to go find your friend?" the boss muttered resentfully.
"I..." Xu Wei looked helpless.
He didn't even know how to explain it in a way that his boss would understand.
The other person was clearly impatient and said with obvious disdain, "I don't care why you're in a bad mood, I just want you to eat quickly. I have a date to go on today!"
It was clearly his bad attitude that made it seem like the others were being unreasonable.
Xu Wei completely ignored his boss and buried himself in his food.
Lin Beichen didn't say a word throughout. For him, other people's understanding was completely unimportant; all he cared about was finding Hao Jianhua as soon as possible.
Listening from the side, Chen Jiale couldn't stand his boss's attitude any longer and couldn't help but complain, "Going on a date? I think you're not trying to comfort us, but are just in a hurry to go on your own date. I don't know how to be a boss." (End of Chapter)
