Chapter 797: Illuminating the Madness of the World

In front of the Foyin Temple, all the monks lined up in the open space in front of the temple.

Qieci didn't say much. He just raised his hand slightly and signaled the monk beside him to light the torch.

The flames spread rapidly along the dry firewood pile, instantly enveloping the secret letters and banknotes.

The raging fire illuminated everyone's faces red, and also reflected Huiming's unwilling and distorted face.

Before long, the flames died down, leaving only a pile of ashes.

Qici personally picked up the broom, swept up the ashes one by one, and then walked towards the lotus pond in front of the temple.

He sprinkled the ashes into the pool, and they floated on the water for a moment before sinking to the bottom.

Qieci looked at the lotus pond and said, "The filth will not stain the clear water, so let's leave it at that."

"As for the gold and silver, a small portion will be kept for daily use in the temple..."

"As for the rest, go buy some rice and distribute it to the people living down the mountain."

After hearing this, all the monks clasped their hands together and praised it repeatedly.

After dealing with these, Qieci turned around and looked at Huiming who was bound.

Huiming no longer had his former arrogance, but there was still a hint of resentment in his eyes.

Qieci said, "Huiming, you have violated the temple rules, are greedy by nature, and have committed many crimes."

"Today, I will expel you from this place according to the rules of Foyin Temple."

When Huiming heard this, a trace of panic suddenly appeared in his eyes.
It would be better if he was executed directly, but if he was exiled, there was no telling how many victims and gentry would want to cause trouble for him and take his life.

Huiming wanted to speak, but Qici raised his hand to stop him.

Qieci continued, "Buddha saves the wicked, there is a cause and effect, when you come down the mountain, tell the Buddha if you have any complaints."

After saying this, Qieci signaled the monks to loosen Huiming's restraints.

Huiming staggered to his feet, glared at Qici fiercely, then turned around and limped out of Foyin Temple.

After Huiming left, a group of monks gathered around Qieci.

One of the older monks spoke up on behalf of everyone: "Master Qieci, now that Huiming has been eliminated, Foyin Temple needs someone to take charge of the situation."

"You are highly respected, please take over the position of host."

Upon hearing this, the other monks also echoed it.

After hearing this, Qie just shook his head.

He looked around at the monks and said:
"I appreciate your kindness."

"But the position of host is a heavy responsibility, and I feel that my ability is limited and I am not up to the task."

When the monks heard this, they were all stunned and wanted to persuade him again.

Qi Ci then said: "Master Yun Huai, your virtue and prestige are even greater than mine!"

"I recommend him to temporarily take over the position of host. What do you think?"

Monk Yunhuai is the junior brother of the previous abbot. He is very old and almost 70 years old.

However, he is indeed a man of profound Buddhist knowledge and highly respected character.

After saying this, Qieci looked at Monk Yunhuai.

Yun Huai nodded slightly, without objection.
After all, he knew that his mind was in Buddhism and he had no intention of taking charge.

Seeing that Qi had made up his mind, the monks stopped forcing him.

In this way, Qieci continued to return to the Sutra Repository, accompanied by green lamps and ancient scrolls every day.

After Huiming was expelled from the Foyin Temple, he wandered down the mountain like a stray dog.

The local tycoons who had colluded with him saw that he had lost power.
They were afraid that he would leak the secrets between them and endanger their own interests.

After three days of failure, a monk found Huiming's body exposed in the wilderness.

After discussing with Qi, Yun Huai decided to push for the revision of the temple rules.

It was clearly decreed that "monks are not allowed to own private property" and that monks "must work in the fields for half a day every day."

Under Yun Huai's strict implementation, the atmosphere in the temple gradually changed.

The monks no longer engage in intrigue for personal gain, but instead each performs their duties.

The abbot also ordered the monks to till the vegetable fields, chop wood and carry water every day, saying "toil the body to purify the mind".
At the beginning, these monks who were not engaged in production had many complaints.

Later, when he saw that Abbot Yun Huai and Master Qi Ci were also personally complying with the temple rules, his resentment gradually subsided.

The land that Huiming had occupied privately was also returned to the tenants.
Moreover, the incense money in the temple is made public every month, so the lower-level monks no longer suffer from deductions.

Although Yun Huai is old, he is serious and responsible about everything.
Whether it is mediating conflicts among monks or repairing and managing temples, he can handle it in an orderly manner.

Qieci still lived in the Sutra Repository and annotated the sutras. Occasionally, pilgrims would peek through the window and see him working at his desk.
Just to get a glimpse of the true appearance of this master, there was even a rumor later that "when Master Qieci was copying the scriptures, golden light shone all over his body."

As this statement became more and more mysterious, some "eminent monks" and "masters" began to read the "Repentance Sutra" in the hope of finding a solution to this problem.

They wanted to see what kind of power this monk, who was called "True Buddha" by those who were curious about him, had.

In the "Sutra on Repentance of Karmas", the theory of "sins turning into lotus" written by Qieci against the Brahma priests naturally became a focus of controversy.

The so-called "sins turning into lotus" refers to the evil deeds done before becoming a monk.
If you do good from now on, the past will be forgiven.

These contents are only written for the Brahman priests to read.
I want them to let go of their obsessions and concentrate on chanting Buddha’s name.

But I never thought that this view would spread.

These eminent monks began to publicly express their opposition to Qieci's views on various occasions.

When they were preaching, they warned believers not to be misled by this kind of "heresy".

After the monks' remarks spread, Qieci and his "Sutra on Repentance for Karmas" became the target of public criticism.

One day, a wandering monk was walking for three months.
Finally, they arrived at the Foyin Temple, where he questioned Qieci in public: "If a butcher can become a Buddha by reciting the sutras, isn't that trampling on the hard work of practitioners?"

The wandering monk's voice was loud and clear, attracting the attention of many monks and pilgrims.

Everyone gathered around, wanting to hear Qi Ci's response.

Take the mud in front of the temple and smear it on white silk, then pour clean water on it.
A lotus pattern appeared in the mud, and the answer was: "Purity comes from turbidity, and Buddha nature does not discriminate between roots and vessels."

The wandering monk left silently, returned three days later and converted, staying in the Foyin Temple until his death.

Because of this incident, Foyin Temple became famous again.

After all, this wandering monk is not an ordinary monk, but a famous master.

Many of the great masters in famous ancient temples were disciples of wandering monks.

It's just because he's used to wandering around that he chooses to drift around forever.

After finishing the task, Qie began to annotate the scriptures again.

He began to think about some more profound questions, such as "where do we come from" and "where are we going".

Even though he has countless magical powers, he is still puzzled by this.

Not long after, because of this name,

Not only monks but also lay people came to seek advice.

There was a child at the foot of the mountain who was infected with some unknown disease. He had a high fever and was breathing weakly.

His parents sought medical help everywhere, but to no avail.

In desperation, they heard the name of this "True Buddha" and went up the mountain to the Foyin Temple.

Although Qieci did not understand medical principles, he had mountain treasures.

Shanbao can not only assimilate all things, but also see through all things, from the smallest dust particles to the largest Maha world. Seeing this, Qi gave the child a wild chrysanthemum from the yard and asked him to "crush the juice and apply it on the forehead."

The parents took the child down the mountain. Three days later, the child's fever subsided. People then began to call him "the savior Buddha."

From then on, common people often came and went in the Foyin Temple, just for the sake of Master Qieci's rescue.

Qieci also accepted all patients who came to him, and in the past three months he had saved thousands of patients.

The Foyin Temple, which already has a constant stream of pilgrims, is now attracting a constant stream of pilgrims every day.

They are often sick and come here to seek an audience with Master Qici.

However, after seeing so many people, Qieci doesn't want to save everyone.

He has three principles of not saving people: first, he will not save dying people, because their fate is predetermined;
Second, don’t save those who have no intention of saving themselves. Since they don’t want to live anymore, why save them?

Third, do not save those who can take care of themselves. Since the illness does not affect their life, we will just ignore them.

But even so, the threshold of Foyin Temple is almost broken down every day.

After pilgrims flocked into Foyin Temple, the vegetarian rooms and lecture hall became the most lively places.

Because of this master, he usually only appears in these two places.

As for the Sutra Repository, it is an important place in the Foyin Temple and only monks are allowed to enter.

Abbot Yun Huai looked at the bustling crowd in the temple, his heart filled with worry.

After all, in this way, the disciples can no longer practice normally and can only receive pilgrims day and night.

After much thought, he ordered the monks to limit the number of people entering the temple every day.

However, this decision has caused dissatisfaction among some pilgrims.

They think they have come here at great trouble just to seek a chance to survive.
But being turned away is really unreasonable.

After Qie Ci learned about this, he proposed adding "morning bells and evening drums" to guide pilgrims in different time periods.

After listening to this, Yun Huai thought that this method was feasible and adopted Qi Ci's suggestion.

However, during this period of time, even though Qieci was not an ordinary person, he could also feel that all living beings were suffering.

He knew very well that illness not only tortured the body, but also tormented the mind.

Buddhism advocates compassion and saving all living beings.
And isn’t relieving people’s pain also a form of salvation?

So Qieci decided to write a scripture, hoping to use Buddhism to explain medical skills.

After having this idea, Qi Ci began to make preparations.

He was thinking about the general content of the scripture in his mind and pondering how to integrate Buddhism with medical skills.

After three months, the scripture gradually took shape, and he named it "The Buddhist Sutra of Compassion and Healing the Heart".

The sutra is divided into three volumes according to this.

The first volume heals the mind, focusing on the "Four Immeasurable Minds", using extreme kindness, compassion, joy and giving to relieve depression, and explaining in detail the methods of meditation and breathing regulation.

The middle volume is about medicine, which records illustrations and recipes for preparing hundreds of common herbal medicines, such as "dry calendula officinalis and steam it three times, then mix it with sandalwood powder to suppress evil heat."

The second volume is about medicine, and its content emphasizes that "curing diseases requires curing poverty" and guides monks to help villagers open medicine fields and build free clinics.

Controversy began to arise: a monk questioned that "monks were too involved in secular affairs", so Qi wrote the "Twelve Great Vows of Medicine Buddha" in response, and the two reached an agreement to "only teach medical theories, and not run a pharmacy."

However, when the first draft of the scripture was circulated in the temple, it also caused some controversy.

Some monks questioned this, believing that monks should focus on pure practice.
However, these behaviors advocated by Qieci caused monks to become too involved in secular affairs, which violated the Buddhist rules.

After hearing this, Qie was not angry.

He understood the concerns of these monks, so he wrote the "Twelve Great Vows of Medicine Buddha" in response.

Among them are the wishes for all sentient beings to be at peace in body and mind, and for all illness and suffering to be eliminated.

He also explained to the monks that helping people cure their illnesses was also a form of practicing Buddhism.

Moreover, Qici also reached an agreement with other monks to "only teach medical theories and not run a pharmacy."

For this reason, a special "Medical Zen Hall" came into being in the Foyin Temple.

Among them, the medical practitioners were monks who had read this new sutra thoroughly.

The disciples studied scriptures and debated the Dharma during the day, and identified herbs and ground medicinal powders in the evening.

And patients who want to get treatment in this "Medical Zen Hall" cannot get it for free.

Instead, they were required to do some labor, such as helping to clean the temple and sorting herbs.
Or you can help the disciples do things within your ability in exchange for medical treatment.

As for seriously ill patients who are unable to do these things, they can fulfill their promises after they recover.

Under the influence of Foyin Temple, nearby villagers also began to come into contact with and learn "The Sutra of Compassion and Medicine".

Under the influence of Foyin Temple, many people chose to become doctors and traveled around the villages to treat illnesses.

However, there were also monks who were not used to the prosperity of Foyin Temple and were thinking of ways to bring it down.

By chance, they saw the method of "fighting poison with poison" in the scriptures.

Because they did not understand the underlying principles, they mistakenly believed that Chici was repeating the mistakes of Brahmanism.

They don't know that this therapy actually uses trace amounts of miasma to stimulate the body's resistance.

When I saw the word "poison", I thought of the ancient Brahmanism.

So they anonymously reported to the government, claiming that Qieci of Foyin Temple was a "devil monk making poison" who intended to harm the people.

After receiving the report, the government immediately sent officials to Foyin Temple.

However, although the disciples of the Medical Zen Hall were panic-stricken, Qi Ci was calm and composed.

Qieci personally prepared the medicine according to the instructions in the scriptures and drank it without hesitation.

The officials knew they had no other options. After all, if they caught Qieci,
There is no way we can get out of this mountain today.

After a casual search, he left.

At this time, the people who had received treatment in the Yichan Hall also learned about this.

They came to the government with their families and asked for an explanation.

The government eventually determined that Qieci's new sutra was harmless and no longer tried to stop the spread of the "Buddha's Compassionate Medicine Sutra."

On the mountain path, an old man carrying a medicine basket hummed a little tune:

"The sun in July is so hot - it turns yellow three times -"

This is the content of "The Sutra of Compassion and Medicine".

In the town, the owner of the medicine shop narrowed his eyes and listened to the prescription read out by the ragged old woman in front of the counter. He couldn't help but sneered and said, "Is it the same thing from the Foyin Temple again?"

The old woman coughed a few times, and then said: "Look at him, the Buddha, the Tao, the demon, the one who can reduce the fever is the Bodhisattva!"

……

However, this is a good thing for the people, but not for other temples.

Early that morning, Yun Huai unfolded the message in front of him.

At this moment, the volume of "The Buddhist Sutra of Compassion and Medicine" was spread out on the desk, with some ink on the corners.

Master Yun Huai patiently read the letter from Master Kong Huan, a leading figure in Buddhism.

The content of the article is nothing more than criticizing Qie Ci: "Healing the world is the business of Taoism."

"Buddhism talks about emptiness and giving up. How can it make sense to hold a medicine scale and chant Amitabha?"

When Master Yun Huai read this, he put the letter close to the candlelight and couldn't help but sigh:
"A medical classic illuminates all the foolishness of the world." (End of this chapter)
