Chapter 798: Budai Monk
It is very clear from this that Buddhism is not only about reciting scriptures and meditating, but also about practice.
During his time at Foyin Temple, although he devoted himself to studying Buddhism and writing scriptures, he always felt that something was missing.
He realized that only by stepping out of the monastery and getting in touch with sentient beings could he truly experience the Dharma.
Therefore, Qieci also expressed to Yun Huai:
"The value of Buddhism lies in personal practice. I wish to travel all over the mountains and rivers to spread the Compassion Medicine Sutra far and wide."
Yun Huai turned the rosary in his hand, revealing a worried look.
However, he did not dissuade Qi Ci. After all, the two had known each other for many years.
He knew very well that Qi Ci had already made up his mind and there was no way he could stop it.
Abbot Yun Huai couldn't help but sigh: "If that's the case, I hope you have a safe journey and spread the Buddhist teachings and medical skills to help all living beings."
Qieci clasped his hands together, bowed and left.
The sky gradually darkened, and night was about to cover the entire Foyin Temple. The candlelight flickered in the meditation room.
He sat alone at his desk, unfolding the unfinished manuscript of "The Compassionate Medical Heart Sutra".
He picked up the brush, dipped it in ink, and began to copy carefully.
After I finished copying this, it was almost dawn.
He rolled up the manuscripts one by one and placed them on the bookshelf.
Qieci sighed lightly and put one of the volumes into his bag for his own use.
After packing his luggage, Qieci put it on his back and picked up the bamboo stick.
He walked out of the meditation room and came to the gate of Foyin Temple.
The steps in front of the mountain gate were glowing coldly under the moonlight. Qici stood there quietly, gazing into the distance.
Not long after, Master Yun Huai hurried over with several disciples.
Yun Huai walked up to Qi Ci and looked at him: "It's a long journey, you must take care of yourself."
"Don't be stubborn when you encounter difficulties. Come back if you can."
Qi Ci nodded slightly: "Don't worry, host."
At this time, all the disciples put their hands together and saluted.
……
In the afternoon, the sun is shining brightly.
Qieci was wearing a coarse monk's robe, straw sandals, and carrying a medicine bag as he walked along a country path.
His coarse cloth monk's robe was a little white from washing, but it was starched very clean.
Suddenly, a figure came running from the ridge beside the road and blocked Qieci's way.
The visitor was a villager, his face was filled with anxiety, sweat dripping down his forehead:
"Master, please save my mother!"
The villager said as he knelt down with a plop: "She has been very ill these past few days and has been unconscious. I really can't do anything!"
Because of this, monks are now basically equated with doctors.
This is especially true in a place not far from Foyin Temple.
Qieci hurriedly helped the villager up and asked about the old man's condition with a serious expression.
After listening, Qieci looked at the villagers and said, "I can treat your mother's illness."
"But after you recover, you need to help the lonely elderly people in the village repair their houses or reclaim wasteland."
The villagers nodded quickly after hearing this:
"Thank you, Master! I will do as you say! As long as it can cure my mother, I will do anything!"
After getting the villagers' reply, Qie did not delay any longer and followed them to his home.
After checking on the old man's condition, Qieci put down the medicine bag on his back and began to search inside it.
Soon, the required medicinal materials were selected.
He began to combine the herbs one by one according to the prescription.
Qieci handed the prepared medicine to the villagers and gave them detailed instructions: "Take this medicine twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. When decocting the medicine, pay attention to the heat and don't let it burn."
"After your mother wakes up, she should eat a light diet, let her rest more, and don't let her overwork herself."
The villagers listened attentively and nodded continuously.
After Qieci left, the old man quickly recovered his health.
The villager also followed Qie Ci's instructions and helped the elderly in the village to reclaim several acres of land.
He carried a medicine bag and a staff, and measured the earth with his straw sandals.
For three years, he has been dedicated to helping people in need, preaching the Dharma and saving the lost, and his reputation has gradually spread throughout the earth.
And because people at that time saw that he carried a cloth bag with him, they called him "Cloth Bag Monk".
Wherever he went, the people vied to see him and the children followed him.
Whenever he donated money in the market, he would not only give out medicine, but also teach the profound meaning of "The Compassionate Medical Heart Sutra".
An old man asked: "What does the monk's cloth bag contain?"
Qie smiled and said: "All living beings have not woken up from the dream."
From then on, wherever Budai passed by, it was like spring rain to relieve drought, and all delusions and foolishness disappeared, and people all said that he was the incarnation of Buddha.
However, Qieci was not confused by this, but continued to travel.
At this time, Qieci was sitting cross-legged beside the campfire, his coarse monk's robe covered with dust.
Qieci stared at the campfire with a focused expression, as if he was thinking about something.
As the bonfire leaped, Qie suddenly saw particles flowing in the flames.
He clearly saw that inside the flame, there were countless tiny particles constantly flowing and shuttling back and forth.
These particles are so tiny that they cannot be detected without careful observation.
They moved randomly in the flames, sometimes gathering together and sometimes dispersing.
He suddenly realized that "all things are gathered and dispersed by the causes and conditions of dust particles", and a glimmer of enlightenment flashed in his eyes.
As Qieci looked at the particles in the flame, a sudden feeling of enlightenment came to his heart.
He realized that all things in the world are like particles in these flames.
They are all made up of countless tiny dust particles, which come together due to various causes and conditions to form various forms.
According to Buddhism, when the causes and conditions disappear, these things will decompose again and return to the state of dust.
"The essence of the mountain treasure..."
A flash of inspiration suddenly occurred to Qieci: "It is not a thing, but a result of fate that has just come into my body."
Over the years, the origin of Shanbao remains a mystery in Qieci's heart.
But at this moment, he seemed to suddenly understand.
Shanbao seemed to have come for him.
"Back then, Shan Bao did not choose my people, nor did he choose the mountain gods, but chose me..."
"But if you want to find out the specific origin of Shanbao, I'm afraid you still need to study Buddhism in depth."
He already had a vague guess about Shanbao's origin, but he was not sure.
However, Qie can also feel that if he has a deeper understanding of "cause and effect" and "fate", he will surely know the details of the mountain treasure.
It seems that because I have realized the Dharma, my perception of the world has become completely different since then.
When he saw the grass and trees on the roadside, he could clearly see their texture.
Even the tiniest veins seemed extremely clear in his eyes.
Not only that, but even more so if you feel it carefully,
You can also foresee the scene of this plant, from seed to withering in the future.
Qieci was quite amazed by this "supernatural power" and regarded it as a gift from Buddhism.
When dusk fell, we set out to the shadow of Yandang Mountain.
Qici, wearing a coarse monk's robe that had become slightly white from washing, walked steadily along the mountain path.
When he reached the northern foot of Yandang Mountain, he saw a half-leaning wild temple among the ruins.
This wild temple looks very old, with walls covered with cracks and broken tiles on the roof. Half of the wall seems likely to collapse at any time.
The area in front of the temple is overgrown with weeds, making it look particularly desolate.
Qici gently pushed open the shaky temple door and walked into the wild temple.
The temple was filled with an old atmosphere and was dimly lit, with only a few faint rays of light coming through the shabby window frames.
On a cushion, sat an old monk.
He was so thin that he looked as if a gust of wind could blow him down.
There was a green aura lingering on the old monk's forehead, and his face was as pale as paper. One could tell at a glance that he had been suffering from a serious illness for a long time.
Qieci saw the old monk's condition, so he opened his purse and took out some common plantain and physalis, added some wild chrysanthemum from rock crevice, and boiled them three times in the incense burner.
Qieci poured the medicine into the old monk's mouth, and the old monk immediately drank it and sweated like a pulp.
But within three quarters of an hour, the purple spots faded away, and the old monk suddenly asked in surprise:
"I have been practicing asceticism for thirty years and have used Snow Mountain Polygonum Multiflorum and Tianchi Snow Lotus as medicine. I never thought that these ordinary herbs could have the effect of rejuvenating people."
Qieci just shook his head and laughed, "In the past, Master Zhizhe said in his verse, 'The Buddha nature is like the nature of medicine, it does not discriminate between the noble and the humble.' Have you not heard of this, Master?"
The old monk straightened his clothes and stood solemnly, clasped his hands and asked, "May I ask the master's Dharma name?"
Qie pointed to the cloth bag around his waist and smiled without saying anything.
The old monk bowed his head and sighed, "It turned out to be the monk Budai, Master Qici is here!"
"I heard that Master Qieci is an expert in both Zen and medicine, and is one of the most eminent monks in the world."
After hearing this, Qie just shook his head and said, "You're too kind."
The old monk continued, "But I would like to ask Master Qieci, I have been guarding the wild temple for forty years and have some questions that I have not yet answered. I wonder if Master Qieci can..."
Before he finished speaking, Qieci nodded and said, "You can ask as much as you want."
The old monk asked, "Master, do you observe water as you observe your mind?"
Qieci smiled and replied: "Water has no inherent nature, it changes shape or round depending on the container."
This means that water has no fixed form; it changes shape depending on the container.
Just like human hearts, they are affected by the external environment.
I suddenly laughed out loud, my laughter was as loud as a bell.
The sound echoed in this wild temple, even causing the roof tiles to tremble slightly.
The cassock on his body was blown up by an invisible wind, like clouds hanging from the sky.
At the same time, golden lotuses emerged three times under my feet.
The lotus flowers are layered and the petals are full.
The old monk stepped onto the golden lotus with one move and said in a thunderous voice: "I am the Arhat of Lingyan, and I have come to test your Bodhi mind!"
Qieci just shook his head and said, "Stop, Arhat! I have not yet completed my merits. How can I become a Buddha?"
"What I have done is only to measure mountains and rivers for 3,000 miles, and to cure countless illnesses and sufferings. Compared with the supreme Bodhi, it is like a mustard seed compared to Mount Sumeru."
"If your merits are not yet complete, then wouldn't it be in vain for us to become Buddhas?"
The arhat shook his head, pointed to a fish swimming in the stream outside the wild temple and asked, "Does this fish recognize that it is trapped by the water?"
Qieci replied: "A fish does not know water, just as a man does not know space."
The arhat asked again: "Can you transform a fish into a roc?"
He picked up a dry branch and drew a circle on the ground: "Peng roams in the sky, and is also in this circle."
The arhat sighed, "I originally wanted to enlighten you to go to the Western Paradise and become a Buddha, but your thoughts are too high for me to reach. I am not qualified to enlighten you."
After saying this, the Arhat flew away on a cloud.
Qi Ci did not take this matter to heart.
After all, with his magical powers, he has already surpassed the so-called ordinary gods and Buddhas.
He was also not interested in becoming a Buddha or a patriarch.
What Qieci wants to do is to use Buddhism to see through all things in the world and find the cause and effect of Shanbao.
Not long after, winter came, and Qieci built a hut on the top of a snowy mountain.
The furnishings in the hut are simple, with just a stove, a couch and a desk.
Therefore, I spend every day in this thatched cottage, meditating and contemplating, enjoying the solitude of the snow-capped mountains.
One day, auspicious clouds surged in the sky, and a Bodhisattva came slowly towards us, stepping on the white snow.
The Bodhisattva had a compassionate face and said straight to the point:
"Do you wish to ascend to the Western Paradise and become Medicine Buddha?"
Qi was not moved by this, but just fiddled with the charcoal in the stove and asked, "Does the Bodhisattva use the stove to save the world?"
After hearing Qici's question, the Bodhisattva fell silent for a moment and looked at Qici quietly.
Seeing this, Qieci continued, "When the charcoal turns to ash, the furnace is empty."
The Bodhisattva nodded: "Disciple, I accept your instruction." Then he turned into a stream of light and disappeared.
But Qici still sat quietly by the fire,
As if none of this had ever happened, he continued with his meditation and contemplation.
Soon, spring came and Qieci also went down the mountain.
As it moved eastward, it gradually moved out of the area ruled by Buddhism, and chaos gradually emerged here.
Here, we saw an ancient altar left over from the ancient Brahma period.
Nine bodies were being hung on the altar.
Looking at this, I couldn't help but be silent.
He originally thought that with his disappearance, Brahma would also cease to exist.
But now it seems that I was taking it for granted.
At this moment, beside the altar,
The priest was holding a dagger and gouging out the heart of the last corpse.
Qieci walked closer in the pool of blood and couldn't help shaking his head: "Donor, do you know that the Lotus Sutra says, 'There is no peace in the three realms, it is like a burning house'?"
The priest turned around and revealed the third eye on his forehead: "I am the last high priest of the Brahma religion. This is the true law of the world!"
Qici sighed, said no more to him, and suddenly tore off his robes and threw them towards the altar.
The priest laughed wildly and swung his dagger. The blade light condensed into a demon statue: "You Buddhist sect plagiarized my Brahma world. Today..."
He was about to continue speaking, but was interrupted by Qieci:
"When the Bodhisattva lowers his brows, compassion arises in the six realms; when the Vajra glares, the four demons all scatter!"
"I will end the cause I sowed in the past..."
In a trance, the priest seemed to see a huge shadow rising from behind the monk.
He could not help but kneel down and murmured, "Father God..."
Qieci just sighed: "Since it is the Buddha himself, why do you have to test me with this?"
At this moment, Qieci has already recognized that the priest in front of him is not really a "Brahma priest".
After all, all the power of Brahma comes from him, and he has converted to Samana, so it is impossible for the priest to have extraordinary abilities.
The shadow behind the priest suddenly trembled, and then slowly solidified into a solemn image of Buddha:
"Qi Ci, do you know why I set up this situation?"
Qieci looked calm, put his hands together, and bowed slightly:
"The Buddha is merciful and created this calamity just to save me."
The Buddha smiled slightly, with a hint of sigh in his voice:
"What you have done is enough to make up for the past mistakes."
Qieci shook his head and said, "I will not become a Buddha until my sins are cleared."
The Buddha was silent for a moment, then nodded slowly: "Since that's the case, I won't force it anymore."
"But you know that this road is difficult and dangerous. If you are not careful, you will be swallowed by karma and fall into reincarnation forever."
Qieci smiled slightly: "My heart is as solid as a rock. I am willing to bear this karma for all living beings."
"Even if there is no return, there is no regret." (End of this chapter)
