Chapter 280 Toast is Out of the Baking Box
While the toast was being baked, Da Xing brought out the afternoon tea snacks. Everyone enjoyed the aroma of the toast while eating the yam rolls.
Just then, Rivi’s appearance shattered the tranquility of the courtyard.
"Sir, why did you come down here?"
Kagawa sat in front of the oven, looking up at Rivi standing next to him with a surprised expression.
"Let's change that way of addressing you. Just call me by my name." Li Wei said with a wry smile. "It's nothing special. I had an appointment with my boss tonight, so I came down to let you know. But it seems that Xiangqi and Xiaoxue aren't home right now."
"It seems that Xiangqi was called out by his classmates from the student council, and Xiaoxue and Linming went to have dinner with some peers from the operations team, so it's just a few of us at home right now." Xiangchuan paused, glancing at the group of students from Class 8 of the first year of high school who were staring at them, "...just a few dozen of us."
“Dozens of people and ‘only’ don’t go well together in this context, do they?” Rivi chuckled, turning his gaze back to the oven. “Your dough… buns? Is that what they’re called? Are they ready today?”
"It's called bread. We made one batch this morning, and this afternoon we wanted to try making some others. It's still baking now. We made a lot this time. Jun... cough, Brother Liwei, you should try some later."
Kagawa managed to hold back from calling out "sir" again.
-
Kagawa and Riwei were chatting happily, while the students from Class 8 of Grade 11 behind them stared wide-eyed.
“Ouyang, I remember this officer is from the 11th Fleet’s pioneering unit, right? What’s he doing at Kagawa’s house?”
Class monitor Lu Daiqing asked in a low voice. If it weren't for the gossip glint in his eyes, one would have thought he was just concerned about his classmate.
"Kagawa's brother and this officer... you know... they hit it off? So they invited him to stay here temporarily."
Temporary stay? The students in Class 8 of Grade 1 looked at each other in bewilderment.
"The pioneering troops can only stay in other convoys for a maximum of one month, right? During that time, there is also the handover and reporting work with government departments. This place is quite a distance from the port and government area. Won't that be inconvenient? And I remember that generally, pioneering troops are directly received by government departments and checked into hotels."
Long Xiaoxian touched his chin in confusion.
“I’ve heard some rumors about this, but I’m not sure if they’re true.” Nancy squinted at Rivi’s retreating figure. “It seems that this pioneering force doesn’t intend to leave our fleet anytime soon.”
Huh? Everyone's eyes widened.
"What's the point of leaving the pioneering troops behind? It would be understandable if it were a cultural exchange diplomatic mission. The 11th Fleet has a deep understanding of ancient culture, and they would probably be very interested in the data that Kagawa presented this time."
Ouyang Yating frowned.
"That's why I said the authenticity is uncertain. This pioneering force staying in our fleet will not have any substantial impact on the progress of the draft or on Kagawa. With those government officials in our fleet whose minds are full of planting grains, vegetables, chickens, pigs and cattle, I don't believe they would agree to Captain Noah's decision to waste money."
Nancy shrugged.
Everyone nodded silently in agreement with these words.
Yes, the Agricultural Bureau usually fights tooth and nail for research funding. If they were to waste money supporting other shipping companies, they'd be furious. And now, with new data from Kagawa helping with the planting and breeding of new crops and species, there are plenty of other things that will cost money.
"If he were smart enough to stay here for a day or two and then leave, that would be fine. But yesterday I saw him even buying new server equipment in his room, so I guess he'll be staying for quite a while."
Aino snorted defiantly.
"If you ask me, it's probably because those stingy government officials are trying to save money, so they're bringing high-ranking military officers to the Xiang family's place. With Xiangchuan's menu, a meal or two won't make them feel like our government is being inadequate in its hospitality; they might even be willing to pay for their own meals. Hmph, they're really shrewd." Aino didn't know what a shrewd calculation was; he'd only heard Xiangchuan mutter this before, and she'd given a simple explanation. Aino found it amusing and started using it too.
Ouyang Yating frowned.
How did you know that this officer had bought a new server in his room?
"Because I live right next door to him, I happened to see him delivering the goods."
Everyone:...
The guest room arrangement at the Xiang family's place is really interesting.

However, casual conversation and gossip often make time seem to fly by. Before long, the oven's timer alarm went off, and Liang Gong and Aino quickly went to take the baking tray out.
Kagawa quickly put on heat-resistant gloves and directed Ouyang Yating, Mandy, and Fu Chengkai to prepare plates for her to serve the toast.
After taking out the toast mold, Kagawa opened the lid, and a brown bread appeared on top of the mold. The aroma was so enticing that Kagawa couldn't help but swallow hard.
There's no way around it; the combination of heavy cream, milk, and starch is just such an olfactory bomb.
However, she didn't stop working. She quickly turned the mold upside down onto the prepared plate and gently shook it to release it from the mold.
The toast mold was something she asked Aino to customize before her vacation. Considering there was no parchment paper available, Kagawa specifically instructed that the inside of the mold should be made of a non-stick material.
So this time the demolding went very smoothly. Even though it had been baked in a brick oven for more than 30 minutes, it was still easy to demold.
After successfully unmolding the first loaf, Kagawa finally breathed a sigh of relief, and then worked with Ouyang Yating to unmold all six loaves of toast and place them on a plate.
The freshly baked toast has sharp edges and corners. If it weren't for the delicious aroma of milk, it wouldn't look like bread, but more like the bricks of a house that everyone saw in the documentary last night.
"How do you eat this? Just bite into it?"
Aino picked up a piece of toast with a puzzled look.
"If you eat the whole thing, you won't need to eat dinner tonight or tomorrow morning. You have to cut it in half before eating it."
Kagawa snatched the toast from his hand, placed it on the plate, and used the knife in his hand to cut it into slices one centimeter thick.
The sliced toast revealed its snow-white interior, releasing an even richer milky aroma that made the students of Class 8, Grade 11, gathered around Xiangchuan take several big gulps.
Soon, all six loaves of toast were sliced. However, Kagawa didn't rush to let everyone come up and eat. Instead, he asked Daisei to bring up the food he had prepared for lunch.
Da Xing opened the box, revealing several lunchboxes inside. Upon closer inspection, they contained simply prepared ingredients such as fried eggs, fried steak, and chicken pieces, along with mayonnaise and... raw leafy greens?
What are they going to do? Everyone looked at Kagawa with a puzzled expression.
Kagawa: What else can we make? Sandwiches, of course.
My personal favorite way to eat toast is to hollow out a small square in the middle, crack an egg into it, and fry it. I can eat three or four slices in one meal (and then my weight goes up and up).
