Chapter 1070 Death's Binding
The other person's lips curled into a strange smile, as if they were watching a fantastic show.
But somewhere it hadn't noticed, Wu Heng silently tapped the phone screen with his fingertip, marking the presence.
Dean and Sam's argument ended badly.
Unable to persuade his brother, who was also suffering internally but had chosen a pragmatic path, Sam was filled with anger and disappointment. He turned abruptly and strode toward the motel where they were temporarily staying.
He felt frustrated and confused.
Dean watched his brother leave, wiped his face in anguish, and didn't immediately chase after him. He knew Sam needed time to calm down.
Wu Heng then put away his phone, walked over, and glanced in the direction Sam had left, then at the street corner where the homeless man possessed by a demon had quietly disappeared, before finally settling his gaze on Dean.
"The root of the conflict lies in differences in perception, which can be adjusted. However, we may be able to temporarily unify our goals. Let's go back; there are still unresolved issues."
Wu Heng's words were quite meaningful.
An hour later, an even more heated argument broke out in the hotel room.
Sam insisted that Suan's actions must be stopped and Death must be dealt with, otherwise there would be endless trouble.
After a painful struggle, Dean finally agreed with some of Sam's views, namely that Death could no longer be allowed to linger. This thing was far beyond the control of an ordinary woman like Suan. If things continued like this, it would inevitably backfire and cause a great disaster.
But he insisted that they could not resort to the drastic method of directly smashing the altar, which would have resulted in Suan being killed by the backlash, since they had just tacitly approved of her actions in saving Leila.
In a way, Suan was indeed Dean's savior.
"Then what do you suggest we do?" Sam said sarcastically. "Go up to her and say please?"
“There’s always another way! Let’s study that dark magic book more carefully!” Dean said, frowning.
Ultimately, with Sam's extreme reluctance but with no other choice, the two decided to try to find a way to both eliminate the threat of death and protect Suan as much as possible.
They pulled out the thick, ominous tome of black magic and studied it all night long. Wu Heng would occasionally offer a key insight or two, hitting the nail on the head, as if he were already accustomed to this kind of forbidden knowledge.
Neither of them had any doubts about this, after all, Morrick was an old family with traditions.
By dawn, they had finally found a theoretically feasible, but extremely risky, alternative:
A powerful external force is needed to intervene forcefully the moment Su An actively weakens the contract, suppress and take control of the enraged Grim Reaper, bear its backlash, and thus allow Su An to escape safely.
"But who can we find to be this outside help?" Sam asked worriedly.
"Perhaps we can summon a demon, use it as an external force, and then, the moment the Death Pact is transferred to it, send it back to Hell. That way, it will take the Death God with it and roll back to Hell!" Dean suggested after thinking it over.
"No, it's too risky. If that demon isn't repatriated, a demon that controls death will probably be uncontrollable. That would be an even bigger disaster for the real world."
"What we need is to resolve the disaster, not to create a potentially bigger one; that would be far too risky."
"Oh dear, what should we do then!" Dean was also worried.
“I can take charge of the suppression.” Just then, Wu Heng closed his book, his tone as calm as if he were saying that the weather was nice today.
Sam and Dean looked at him at the same time, their eyes filled with surprise and uncertainty.
They had witnessed the power of Death firsthand; it was far beyond the reach of ordinary supernatural beings. "Lor, this is too dangerous!" Dean exclaimed instinctively. "The power of Death is immense, perhaps beyond the imagination of even the Witchers."
“Someone has to do it.” Wu Heng stood up. “Do you have a more reliable solution?”
"And perhaps it wasn't beyond my expectations."
The two brothers fell silent.
Their proposals were riddled with "what ifs" and rudimentary contingency plans, making their success rate slim.
"I will set up a confinement barrier according to the dark magic in the book to limit the Grim Reaper's range of movement as much as possible," Sam finally said through gritted teeth. This was the greatest guarantee and remedy he could make.
"I'm responsible for protecting Su An and dealing with emergencies," Dean interjected.
The plan was set.
When I returned to the prayer meeting, the atmosphere was different.
Suan did not choose a new goal; the conference was simply a sermon and a thanksgiving event. The believers congratulated Leila on regaining her health, their eyes filled with envy and an even stronger faith in the pastor's 'divine power'.
Su An stood beside her husband with a polite smile on her face, but a hint of anxiety and expectation was hidden deep in her eyes. She would occasionally glance in the direction of the Winchester brothers and Wu Heng.
After the conference, Suan let her husband leave first, while she stayed behind. Reverend Le Granger didn't find it strange, since his wife usually stayed behind to clean, and he was just a blind man.
"You...have you made a decision?" Su An's voice trembled slightly.
“Death must leave,” Dean said in a deep voice, “but not at the cost of your life. We have found a possible way, but it requires your cooperation and is also very dangerous.”
With a stern face, Sam laid out the entire plan that required her to actively weaken the contractual bond, thereby angering Death, but also creating an opportunity for him to suppress her.
After hearing this, Su An's face paled, and he said with a wry smile, "I had a premonition that this power was not something I could control forever. Recently, it has become increasingly restless and seems to be increasingly dissatisfied with my 'offering'."
“I’m having more and more nightmares. I often have insomnia and dream about being killed. I’m not afraid of death, but I’m afraid that Grange will be left without anyone to take care of him, so I agreed and I’m willing to try.”
“But I need to know,” she looked at Wu Heng, “that you are truly confident in suppressing it, rather than having us all perish with it?”
Wu Heng did not answer, but simply nodded slightly; that calmness itself was an answer.
Without further hesitation, the group went to the basement where the hidden altar was located.
The atmosphere was as heavy as a physical weight.
Su An took one last look at the altar made of bones and blood that bore the weight of her love and sin, hope and fear. She took a deep breath and began to chant the reversal spell recorded in the black magic book, which was used to actively weaken her connection with the Grim Reaper.
As her obscure syllables faded, the temperature inside the cellar plummeted.
Cold frost quickly condensed on the walls, and a silent yet soul-tearing shriek of anger erupted from the center of the altar.
The Grim Reaper, long imprisoned and manipulated, sensed the loosening of its restraints and the weakness of its 'master,' and instantly retaliated. No one likes being imprisoned, especially when that imprisonment stems from deception. (End of Chapter)
