Chapter 1271 Monitoring
Wu Heng turned around and looked at the other screens. Two more lights lit up, one dark red and one orange-red, representing a demon and an angel respectively.
These two guys were dealt with by the third and fifth reaction teams.
"It seems the fish are starting to bite," Wu Heng said softly.
The interrogation room was located underground in the center of the field. The walls were covered with runes that absorbed sound waves and energy. Adler was locked in a specially made chair. The drug made him weak but conscious.
David walked in, greeted Wu Heng, and said that the interrogation would be handled by David.
He wasn't wearing the Witcher Guild uniform, just simple black casual clothes. He pulled up a chair and sat opposite Adler, getting straight to the point:
"Name, Organization, Mission Objectives".
Adler stared at him coldly, without saying a word.
David grinned: "I like guys like you."
He used all sorts of torture methods available in the interrogation room, pain that even angels could not endure, but this guy remained completely silent.
Seeing this, Wu Heng signaled to David to stop for a moment.
He stepped forward, and under the man's mocking and stubborn gaze, raised his right hand. A glove appeared, but this time he didn't activate any energy; he simply kept it visible.
"You recognize this, right? Raphael sent you here not only for reconnaissance, but also to check on the condition of the gloves, didn't he?"
Adler's eye twitched almost imperceptibly.
“It seems so.” Wu Heng withdrew his hand. “Then let me tell you, the gloves are good, I am good, and the Witcher Guild is developing even better. Your trap that day not only failed to trap me, but also gave me the opportunity to build all of this.”
"This is the battlefield I have chosen for you. I await the armies of Heaven and Hell here."
He leaned forward, his voice calm but carrying a certain pressure: "Now, you have two choices."
"First, cooperate. Tell me Heaven's plans for the field, how you intend to destroy it next. In return, I can spare your life and even send you to the other side of the Gates of Hell to reunite with your companions. They are still alive. If you act quickly, you might be able to rescue them."
Then you think about going back to heaven.
To be honest, I can't think of any other reason why someone would be sent here to carry out this mission, except as bait to be ostracized by Heaven.
It seems you're not very popular.
Think about it, you clearly have a long lifespan, yet you've been sent here and are now in a state of imprisonment. What is the purpose of all this?
What will you ultimately gain?
"The answer is you won't get anything!" Wu Heng said directly before the guy could even think about it. "Your persistence will only bring you no results; it's all meaningless!"
"Does the outcome of the War of Apocalypse have any direct impact on your interests? You are just an ordinary angel."
Adler, you shouldn't have to endure all this. Do you think that if you died here, those people would grieve for you for even a second, shed a single tear, or feel sorry for you?
At most, I think Raphael would curse you in his heart as a piece of trash, not taking any news with him; while your persistence and death are as light as a feather, utterly meaningless.
People should learn to consider their own needs, and so should angels.
Even in heaven, you should know that they are not so selfless; there are factions and power struggles.
Think it over carefully: whether to live or to die meaninglessly, or even after you die, Raphael might not remember your name.
Perhaps in another month, everyone will have forgotten you exist.
What do you think? "I" Adler's eyes wavered, and at the same time, he thought to himself that his companion was still alive?
He wasn't genuinely concerned about his companions; rather, as someone who was participating in this dangerous operation as part of a larger group, he was actually one of the marginalized individuals.
If I die while others are still alive...
A sudden feeling of resentment welled up inside me; I was unwilling to die like this!
“Second,” Wu Heng continued, “if you don’t cooperate, then I’ll have no choice but to send you to hell.”
"But not through that door. I'll use a more direct method: throw you into the most densely populated area of the demon tide. You know what that means."
The silence lasted for a full minute.
Finally, Adler spoke in a hoarse voice: "My name is Adler, and I belong to the Third Reconnaissance Squad directly under Lord Raphael. Our mission is to confirm the field intelligence, assess your condition, and find a way to destroy the field core."
"What are the specific plans?"
"If it is confirmed that the core of the field is that solidified gate to hell, Heaven will try to reach a temporary agreement with some lords of hell to jointly attack the other side of the gate."
Wu Heng nodded; it was pretty much what he had expected.
He stood up: "Thank you for saving everyone's time, Captain Anna."
Anna walked in.
"Send him to the Gates of Hell and hand him over to Dean. Tell Dean to treat him as a 'guest'—don't kill him, but don't make him too comfortable either. Let him see with his own eyes what we've built on the other side of the gates."
"Yes."
After Adler was taken away, Wu Heng returned to the control room.
On the screen, the other two intruders have also been subdued: one is a homeless man possessed by a demon, and the other is an angel disguised as a geological survey team member.
"On the first day of testing, all three rats were caught." Sam walked in from outside, holding a newly printed report in his hand. "The detection function was perfect, the reaction team's average subduing time was 27 seconds, and there were no friendly casualties."
"What needs improvement is the coverage of the jamming device. Some team members have reported that the effect is reduced by 15% in the edge areas."
“Record the suggestions for improvement,” Wu Heng said. “In addition, judging from Adler’s confession, Heaven and Hell may attempt to launch a joint attack on our Hell defense line.”
"Notify Dean to increase the level of defense, especially the monitoring of spatial disturbances. They may try to open another portal further away from the defensive line."
"Understood." Sam paused. "Guild Master, can this balancing field really be maintained indefinitely?"
Wu Heng looked out the window.
The sunlight was blocked from above by the insulating layer, while the world below remained at a comfortable 15 degrees Celsius.
In the distance, a demon hunter patrol is leading trained military dogs that can sniff out demons on a border patrol.
Further away, the construction team is still completing the infrastructure within the site, including monitoring nodes disguised as communication towers, underground safe houses, and expressways.
“As long as the gates of hell remain intact, the balance field will continue to operate,” Wu Heng said. “What we need to do is ensure that the gates remain in our hands forever.”
He turned to look at the huge strategic map on the wall.
On the map, the balancing field is marked in green, the surrounding human cities in yellow, and further away, gold, representing Heaven's sphere of influence, and red, representing Hell, are slowly and inevitably spreading towards this green area. (End of Chapter)
