Chapter 1278 The Lifespan of a Demon
"Bet your life on theirs? Like Dean did."
"He can do this for Bobby, can you?"
Sam's finger was on the trigger.
For a fleeting moment, he really wanted to shoot.
But reason told him that ordinary bullets might be useless against a wizard who had lived for eight hundred years, and if he died, Dean and Bobby would truly have no hope.
Just then, the sound of high heels came from outside the door.
A woman carrying a beige handbag appeared at the door.
She looked to be in her late twenties, with long chestnut hair, wearing a well-tailored trench coat, and had delicate features, but there was a lingering weariness in her eyes.
“Ryan,” she said softly, looking at the Card Traveler, “stop gambling; you’ve gambled enough, stop now.”
The smile on Card Traveler Ryan's face vanished.
He was silent for a few seconds: "Evelyn, you shouldn't have come here."
“If I don’t come, you’ll keep gambling.” The woman named Evelyn entered the room. Her gaze fell on Sam briefly, but Sam caught something in her eyes: pity? Or a warning?
“Sir, please leave,” Evelyn said to Sam. “Lane won’t give you back your lifespan; that’s his principle.”
Sam looked at her, then at Ryan.
His intuition told him that this woman was not simple, and that her relationship with the Card Traveler was complicated.
He slowly lowered his gun, not out of submission, but because he judged that a direct assault would not be successful.
“I’ll come again,” Sam said, then walked past the two men and left the room.
He didn't go far.
He waited for less than ten minutes in the alley across from the hotel when Evelyn came out. She seemed to know where he was waiting and walked straight over to him.
“You want to save them, right?” Evelyn asked bluntly.
"You know the method?"
“I know, but it’s difficult.” Evelyn took a folded piece of paper from her handbag and stuffed it into Sam’s hand. “These are the materials and steps for casting the Reversal Curse. One of them requires the ashes of a person who has been buried no more than seven days ago. The person must have died of natural causes, not a violent one. The other materials should be available on the market.”
Sam unfolded the note and quickly scanned it. The Reversal Charm required thirteen materials, which weren't particularly difficult to find, but his time was limited. However, if he hurried, he should still be able to gather them all.
"Why are you helping me?" Sam stared at her. "What's your relationship with Ryan?"
Evelyn shook her head with a bitter smile: "I am his shackles, and also his reason. Part of the reason he steals lifespan is for me, but I don't want to live like this anymore."
She didn't say anything more, turned to leave, then stopped: "If you really use the Reversal Spell, it will completely enrage him. He has lived for eight hundred years, and the power he has accumulated is beyond your imagination. Be prepared."
“If something really happens, you can blackmail me; he loves me very much.”
For the next few days, Sam wandered around the city like a madman.
While purchasing rare materials through the guild's secret channels, he kept a close eye on the situation at the hospital. Dean and Bobby's condition was deteriorating, and the doctor had already issued two critical condition notices.
The most troublesome thing is the 'deceased's ashes'.
Sam wasn't a grave robber, but he had no choice. He found a grave in the city cemetery that had been buried three days earlier, with a tombstone that read that the deceased had died at the age of eighty-seven, without illness.
Taking advantage of the fact that no one was around, he used a special shovel to dig up the fresh soil and pry open the coffin. The process made him feel nauseous, but thinking of Dean and Bobby, he gritted his teeth and continued.
After retrieving the ashes, he used demonic power to instantly cover the grave again.
Leave this place, spread all the materials on the ground, and begin preparing the base potion for the Reversal Spell according to the steps on the note.
During this period, he sent a progress report to Lor every half hour.
Wu Heng's reply was brief: Received, continue. Be careful.
As the sun set, the medicine was finally prepared.
Sam poured a jar of viscous, asphalt-like liquid with an eerie purplish-black sheen into a specially made thermos. Just as he was about to head to the hospital to try casting a spell, the warehouse door was pushed open. A light rain drifted in.
Also entering was a semi-transparent ghost ship, its prow resembling a structure made of rain and shadows.
Wu Heng stepped off the boat.
He wasn't using an umbrella, but the raindrops seemed to deliberately avoid him.
Behind him were two young men with vacant eyes and stiff movements. Sam could tell at a glance that they were the possessed demon hosts.
"I had to deal with a small problem on the way, which delayed me by five minutes," Wu Heng said calmly. "How is it?"
Sam quickly reported on all the progress, including the Reversal Charm recipe Evelyn had given him, and his theft of the ashes.
Wu Heng listened quietly without making any judgments.
After listening, Wu Heng looked at the two possessed demons behind him and snapped his fingers.
The brown-haired young man on the left shuddered, his eyes instantly clearing, but that 'clearness' carried a familiar feeling to Sam—the calmness and sharpness that belonged to Wu Heng.
The young man twisted his neck, adjusting to his new body, then looked at Sam:
"Lead the way to the Card Traveler's room."
Sam immediately understood the chairman's plan: to use the demon's body and lifespan as a wager.
The demon's lifespan is theoretically very long, and since it is consumed as a 'bet', it will not truly affect Wu Heng himself.
"This way."
Room 108, knock on the door.
Ryan opened the door again. He saw Sam and raised an eyebrow: "Still not giving up? You brought backup?"
His gaze fell on the brown-haired young man next to Sam, his brows furrowing slightly. He sensed a demonic aura, but it wasn't quite like a demon.
“This time, the bet is on him,” Sam said.
Wu Heng manipulated the demon host into entering the room.
Evelyn was there too; she sat on the edge of the bed, her gaze complicated when she saw Sam.
“Interesting.” Ryan returned to the small round table and sat down, shuffling the cards with a performance-like fluidity. “The lifespan of a demon is indeed a good stake. Are you sure you want to bet?”
“Of course.” Wu Heng spoke, his voice resonating strangely through the demon’s throat, “One hundred years, one round.”
Ryan laughed: "Great, deal the cards."
In the first game, Texas Hold'em, Wu Heng bet on a hundred years of his life.
When the cards were revealed, Ryan had three Queens and Wu Heng had two Jacks.
"You flatter me." Ryan reached out, and something seemed to be drawn from the demon host in the void. The host swayed slightly, but quickly regained his balance.
"Continue," Wu Heng said, his expression unchanged.
In the second round, Wu Heng lost, another hundred years have passed.
We lost the third game.
After losing six consecutive games—the fourth, fifth, and sixth—the demon host's face began to show fine wrinkles, and a few strands of gray hair appeared in his brown hair, marking the end of his six-hundred-year lifespan.
Sam's palms were sweaty. He trusted Wu Heng, but the scene was truly terrifying.
In the seventh round, Wu Heng lost again by a hundred years.
Ryan's smile had turned somewhat smug: "Seven hundred years of lifespan. Do you still want to continue? While the lifespan of ordinary demons is long, it's not infinite." (End of Chapter)
