Chapter 1285 Tracking
Sam asked worriedly, "Is it safe for you to go back now? What if..."
“I’ll be careful!” Castio patted Sam on the shoulder. “Don’t forget, I used to be a warrior of Heaven. I know how to survive in there. You guys focus on dealing with the problems in the real world. I’ll bring back the intelligence as soon as possible.”
Without further farewell, Castio's body vanished from the spot, transforming into a streak of light that shot out of the Gates of Hell. Upon returning to the real world, he would presumably open the Gates of Heaven directly.
Dean watched the disappearing light and muttered, "I have a feeling this guy's going to be in trouble this time. Let's worry about what we can handle first."
In the real world, in northern Montana.
Dean and Sam led a twelve-man team of witchers, tracking the monsters down a remote stretch of Interstate 85 to this location.
According to the analysis of 'Internet addiction', the routes of monsters such as ogres mainly follow the highway network, and they will choose to move around in remote towns or near rest areas along the way.
This is because such places attract both lone travelers and residents as prey, and also facilitate rapid relocation.
The first site was an abandoned gas station.
The convenience store windows were all shattered, the checkout counter was overturned, and chip packets and soda cans were scattered on the floor.
In the storage room in the back house, they found three mutilated bodies: a middle-aged couple and a teenage boy, who appeared to be a family taking refuge there during their travels.
The body had obvious bite marks, and some of its internal organs had been removed.
“It was done by ogres, and more than one.” Sam crouched down to examine the bite marks. “The spacing and depth of the teeth indicate that there were at least two or three individuals of different sizes. They stayed here for no more than an hour, ate the most easily accessible parts and the fat, and then left.”
“It’s like having a snack on the way,” Dean said coldly, kicking aside a blood-stained road map. “Look here, there’s a route drawn in blood on the map, heading south along Highway 85.”
The second scene was even more shocking.
Thirty miles from the gas station lies a small town with just over two hundred inhabitants—Pine Needle Town.
Two homes on the outskirts of town were broken into, leaving the scene in a mess.
In the living room of one of the homes, they found the half-eaten body of an elderly person, with the television still on, playing a late-night shopping program.
“They didn’t even bother to hide,” whispered one of the female witchers in the squad. Her name was Liz, and she was one of the first to be injected with the demon potion. Her pupils narrowed slightly into vertical slits in anger. “These scum…”
"Calm down," Sam said, pressing her shoulder. "Anger won't solve anything."
“The thermal scan of ‘internet addiction’ shows that they left less than three hours ago and continued south along the highway. We’re speeding up to catch up.”
Just as they were about to leave, Liz suddenly pointed to the town's main street: "There... there seems to be someone there?"
As everyone looked over, they saw a figure stumbling out of the shadows at the street corner.
This was a blonde woman, probably in her early thirties, wearing mud-stained jeans and a plaid shirt, her long blonde hair disheveled and loose.
She walked unsteadily, her left hand covering her right arm, with dark red blood seeping through her fingers.
"Help!" the woman's voice was weak. "Help me, there's a monster!"
Dean and Sam exchanged a glance but did not immediately step forward.
Years of experience hunting monsters have taught them that in areas teeming with monsters, the sudden appearance of survivors is often suspicious.
“Stand still.” Dean raised his gun and aimed. “Who are you? How did you survive?” “I…I’m Sarah.” The woman stopped, leaning against a lamppost, her face pale. “My boyfriend and I were on a road trip, and we spent the night here last night. Then, those things came!”
She started crying: "They ate Tom! I only escaped by hiding in the closet in the garage!"
Her explanation sounded reasonable, but Sam noticed a detail: there seemed to be some kind of black lines slowly wriggling under the skin of the woman's wound on her right arm.
That's not blood, it looks more like a tattoo?
"What's that on your arm?" Sam asked, while subtly gesturing to his squad members to spread out and form a circle around the area.
"It's just a tattoo." Sarah forced a smile, pulled up her shirt sleeve to reveal her entire arm.
Sure enough, it was covered with complex black patterns, which looked like a coiled snake, thorns, and some kind of unintelligible writing.
The tattoo seemed to come alive under the dim streetlights, its surface undulating slightly.
But the next second, something strange happened.
The black tattoo patterns suddenly liquefied, peeling off her skin like living ink, turning into dozens of thin black liquid lines that shot towards the two closest Witcher team members at an astonishing speed!
"Watch out!" Dean roared and fired.
The bullet struck Sarah in the chest, but instead of bleeding, more black liquid gushed out.
Her body began to twist and deform, her long golden hair faded to a ghastly white, fine scale patterns appeared on her skin, and her eyes turned into vertical pupils like those of a reptile.
"A basilisk. And a mimicry type!" Sam immediately recognized it. "That black liquid is its venom secretions!"
Two team members who were hit by the black liquid lines have fallen to the ground. The liquid lines spread rapidly after piercing their skin, forming black tattoo patterns on their bodies that were exactly the same as those on Sarah's arm.
As the lines spread, their faces quickly turned purple, and they struggled to breathe.
"The venom will spread rapidly throughout the body by mimicking the patterns of the host's nervous system!" Sam shouted as he tried to block more of the venom with his telekinesis. "Don't let that stuff touch your skin."
The basilisk has fully revealed itself.
It retains the general outline of a human female, but its entire body is covered with translucent scales, its fingertips have turned into black claws, and its tongue is a forked tongue.
What's most terrifying is the black tattoo-like venom that constantly flows on its body and can be shot out at any moment.
"Dean, remove the infected skin before the venom reaches its heart." Sam focused his telekinesis, forcibly creating a compressed air wall around the basilisk to temporarily trap it.
Without hesitation, Dean rushed to the fallen teammate and pulled out his hunting knife.
This was the dagger he had kept close at hand for many years.
He quickly and precisely cut open the areas on the arms of the two team members that were already covered by black lines, shaving off the layer of muscle tissue underneath.
And began using angelic energy to heal his teammates.
The team members screamed in agony, but the blood flowing from their wounds gradually turned from purplish-black back to red. Timely removal of the infected tissue saved their lives.
"You are more troublesome than I imagined." The basilisk's voice was hoarse and unpleasant, its air cage being corroded by black venom. "But it doesn't matter. My mission is merely to buy time!" (End of Chapter)
