Chapter 1286 Dragon?
"Delaying time?" Dean suddenly looked at the basilisk. "Delaying time for whom, ogres? Or something else?"
The basilisk did not answer.
It suddenly opened its mouth, not to attack, but to let out a sharp screech that exceeded the limits of human hearing.
This sound not only gave all the Witchers a splitting headache, but more importantly...
“What is it summoning?” Sam shouted, covering his ears.
In the distance, heavy footsteps and low roars came from the direction of the highway; the footsteps were chaotic, indicating there was definitely more than one.
They were cannibals, at least seventy or eighty of them, emerging from the darkness and charging toward the town.
The basilisk does not act alone; it is in league with the ogres, or at least they are under the same command.
"Damn it, we've been tricked!" Dean spat, raising his reloaded shotgun. "Liz, take the wounded and retreat. The rest of you, prepare to engage!"
The battle is about to break out.
Taking advantage of the chaos, the basilisk broke free of its telekinetic cage, but instead of joining the battle, it quickly retreated into the shadows and disappeared into the night, its delaying mission accomplished.
Dean and Sam didn't have time to give chase, because the ogres had already charged in front of them.
These monsters, over two and a half meters tall with skin as rough as rock, wielded primitive wooden clubs and stones, roaring as they charged forward.
"Fire!"
Gunshots rang out in the night sky over the small town.
Half an hour later, the demon hunter team, having cleared out the horde of cannibals, continued south along the highway.
According to the tracking by 'Internet Addiction', the basilisk and the remaining ogres are all heading in the same direction, towards a region called the town of Erwin.
Along the way, they discovered even more bizarre scenes.
Five cannibal corpses lay scattered on an open space beside the highway.
These bodies were not killed by bullets or blades; they appeared to have been torn apart by some enormous claws, their chests ripped open, and their internal organs scattered everywhere.
Some parts of the meat even had an eerie charred black color, as if they had been instantly burned by high temperatures.
"What the hell did this?" Dean crouched down to examine the claw marks on a corpse's chest. "Twice the size of an ogre's claw. And these burn marks too."
Sam used a portable scanner to analyze the charred tissue: "The temperature was at least over 1,000 degrees Celsius. The carbonization caused by instantaneous contact is not from a flamethrower, but more like an attack method inherent to some kind of organism."
New information has emerged from the real-time analysis of 'internet addiction':
Based on the comparison of biological residues at the scene, the claw marks have a 73% match with the known ancient creatures 'dragons'.
The burn marks are consistent with dragonfire characteristics. Additionally, there have been several recent missing persons reports in the Erwin town area, with the following characteristics.
Sam quickly glanced at the list: "Seventeen missing persons cases, all of whom are young women, aged between 18 and 25."
Commonalities: Both were seen wearing white dresses before their disappearances. The last missing person case occurred yesterday; the missing person was Emily Walker, 19, a local community college student, who bought an antique gold coin at a secondhand store before her disappearance.
"At the same time, there are four cases of missing persons with stolen gold!"
"So ogres and basilisks are heading towards Erwin town, and there's a dragon here snatching girls, specifically those wearing white dresses?" Dean frowned. "What kind of dark version of a fairy tale is this?" "Not only that." Sam pulled up a map. "Erwin town has a complex terrain with many natural caves and abandoned mines, and a large sewer system runs through the entire area. If a dragon needs a damp, dark, and quiet environment to nest, it's the perfect choice."
The 'internet addiction' filter identified three most likely nesting sites:
An abandoned lead-zinc mine, a natural cave system, and the main sewer hub beneath the town of Erwin.
“We don’t have enough manpower to cover all three locations,” Dean said.
“Then let’s go gather some intelligence first.” Sam put away his tablet. “There’s a place in Elwyn town that might be of help: the town’s library and museum. The curator is an old lady named Margaret, who is said to be very knowledgeable about local legends and supernatural history.”
"If dragons have indeed been active here for decades or even centuries, there might be clues in the local chronicles."
The town library of Erwin is an old Victorian-style building with vines climbing its exterior walls.
The curator, Margaret Blackwood, is a woman in her seventies with gold-rimmed glasses and meticulously combed hair.
After Sam explained his purpose, she did not show the surprise or suspicion that most people would have, but instead looked at them thoughtfully.
“Winchester brothers. I’ve heard of you.” Margaret’s voice was soft, and she directly exposed their fake FBI identities with a certain authority. “Come with me.”
She led them to the rare book collection room in the library's basement.
The room was filled with ancient books, manuscripts, and strange collectibles.
Margaret took out a thick book, as thick as a brick, with a leather cover and bronze binding, from a large oak chest.
The book is titled "A Study of the Remains of the Old World".
She turned the pages to find hand-drawn illustrations and densely packed Old English notes: “Written by my great-great-grandfather, a Victorian naturalist, and someone like you.”
The page stopped at an illustration: a typical European dragon, with wings, four legs, a long neck, and breathing fire.
“According to family records and local legends, a dragon does indeed dwell in the town of Erwin.” Margaret pointed to the caption under the illustration, “It once lived here for at least three hundred years, usually sleeping, and would awaken every few decades to collect offerings, usually young women, and its favorite gold.”
"It also created an ancient gold coin with its mark on it. The person who holds the coin will be sensed by it and then taken away at the appropriate time."
"But it was killed by the dragon-slaying hero two hundred years ago."
“But based on the current situation, I highly doubt whether any ‘dragon eggs’ were left behind, or some kind of hybrid offspring.” The old woman adjusted her glasses.
"So there really are dragons!" Dean frowned. "So we have to go slay them. With what? Anti-tank missiles?"
“Ordinary weapons can’t hurt it.” Margaret shook her head. “Dragon scales are harder than armor plates and have extremely high resistance to fire and most energy attacks. The only thing that can effectively damage it is metal forged with dragon blood, also known as a ‘dragon-slaying sword’.”
"Are we supposed to kill a dragon first, use its blood to make a sword, and then kill the dragon?" Dean thought this logic was absurd.
“Of course not.” Margaret walked to the end of the collection room and pushed open a hidden door behind a bookshelf. “There are only a few dragon-slaying weapons left in the world, and coincidentally, one of them is right here.”
Behind the hidden door was an even smaller secret chamber with a stone platform in the center and a sword stuck in the ground.
This is a two-handed longsword, with a simple and unadorned blade.
The blade looked ordinary in the dim light, covered in a layer of dust, and looked like a sword casually forged by an ordinary blacksmith. (End of Chapter)
