Chapter 1303: Rain of Fire
After everyone had evacuated, they suddenly noticed that the screens on the command vehicle were going black one after another.
First, surveillance cameras in the city of Grantspass, then drone signals, and finally even the real-time energy map generated by satellite thermal scanning for internet addiction began to lose large amounts of data.
Bobby pounded on the control panel, but to no avail.
“She’s cutting off the network.” Sam stared at the last flickering screen, which displayed signals from a few surviving sensors on the city’s edge. “It’s not physical sabotage; she’s interfering with all electronic signals using some kind of energy field.”
Dean stood outside the car window, gazing at the increasingly thick, dark fog above the city in the distance: "She learns really fast."
With eight hours remaining until the angelic purification bombardment, they have now lost all surveillance of the city's interior.
Wu Heng's voice came through the communicator, the signal intermittent and mixed with the energy interference noise unique to the Hell's Front: "Eve is confirmed to be extracting negative emotions to strengthen herself. Her energy readings have increased by 300% in the past three hours. Do not make direct contact."
“We weren’t planning on going in,” Dean said into the communicator, “but she’ll be out soon.”
Dean is absolutely right.
In downtown Granzpass, the former city hall building now serves as the shell of a living nest, with Eve standing on the edge of the roof, her feet resting on pulsating fleshy tissue.
She raised her hand, palm up.
Three captured low-ranking angels were dragged before her by the hybrid, their wings torn and tattered, their bodies covered in black, fleshy tendrils that suppressed holy light.
Eve didn't even look at them; she simply placed her finger lightly on the forehead of one of the angels.
Dark energy threads burrowed from her fingertips into the angel's head. The angel's body convulsed violently, its eyes rolled back, and it emitted inhuman gurgling sounds from its throat. A few seconds later, Eve withdrew her hand, leaving a small cluster of shimmering memory points at her fingertips.
She pressed the light spot into her temple.
Images flooded my mind:
The Heavenly Council Hall, Raphael's cold face, the mobilization order for the Purification Force, the bombing countdown. And the Witcher Guild's internet addiction system, those ubiquitous surveillance networks, data streams, tracking algorithms.
Eve opened her eyes, a cold, knowing glint in her molten gold pupils.
"I see." A cold smile curved her lips.
Looking up at the sky, through the dark fog, she could vaguely sense the monitoring satellites adjusting their angles in high-altitude orbits. Then she looked down at the thousands of hybrid monsters still roaming the city.
it's time!
She opened her mouth and made a sound.
It was a sound that no human could make, or even most monsters could make. It was deep, long, and resonant with multiple frequencies, like a mixture of deep-sea whale calls and frog calls, or the groan of the earth tearing apart.
The sound spread throughout the city from her, and wherever it passed, all the hybrid monsters stopped moving and turned in her direction.
Commands are conveyed through the bond of blood and spirit.
The monsters on the city's edge began to retreat outwards, their movements chillingly synchronized. No longer roaming aimlessly as before, they formed ranks, like a well-trained army, silently disappearing into the depths of the road.
The monsters in the center of the city began digging.
Claws, bone blades, and some monsters even slam their bodies into the ground, digging deep pits in the streets and among the ruins of buildings, then crawling in and burying themselves in rubble and mud.
The strangest of all were the monsters that gathered near the nesting chemical plant.
They lined up and walked toward the enormous, half-dried pool of flesh and blood, then jumped in one by one.
As soon as their bodies come into contact with the thick nutrient solution remaining at the bottom of the pool, they begin to dissolve rapidly. Their skin, muscles, and bones melt like wax and blend into the liquid.
The pool boiled and bubbled, its dark red light growing ever brighter. With each monster melted, the energy in the pool increased, and that energy was continuously transported back into Eve's body through the network of fleshy membranes that spread underground.
She stood on the rooftop, closed her eyes, and felt the surge of power flowing into her.
Beneath the fair skin, black, vein-like or blood vessel-like patterns began to emerge, spreading from the heart to the limbs like some kind of living vine.
Each time she absorbs a wave of energy, those lines become clearer, pulsating under her skin, and then slowly fade away with her breath, repeating the cycle endlessly.
Her appearance is also changing.
It wasn't about getting older or younger, but rather a kind of refinement; the lines of her facial features became more delicate, her skin became as smooth as jade, and her golden pupils were unfathomable. It was an inhuman, unsettling beauty.
Eve stopped absorbing monsters after nearly half of the monsters in the city had been transferred, buried, or melted away.
She opened her eyes and looked eastward.
Van der Holt has a population of 186,000. It is a typical settlement of descendants of Dutch immigrants, with a well-planned city, crisscrossing canals, a relatively closed-off atmosphere, and very few supernatural events.
Most importantly, there is no permanent headquarters of the Witcher Guild there.
It is a perfect new ranch.
Just as she was about to give the order for everyone to evacuate, the sky suddenly changed color.
The blue sky turned deathly white.
The sun, which was not bright to begin with, increased in brightness tenfold in a few seconds, turning the entire sky into a blinding white, with no clouds, no blue, only pure light.
Everything on the ground reflected a blinding white light; concrete, glass, metal, and even fleshy tissues looked as if they were covered with a layer of white frost.
Then, the "snow" began to fall.
When they got close to the ground, they realized it wasn't real snow at all.
Instead, clusters of fist-sized white flames slowly drifted down from the extremely high sky, their density increasing until they eventually transformed into a devastating rain of fire.
The Angel Purification Protocol has been activated ahead of schedule.
The white flames melted quietly upon contact with any buildings, vehicles, monsters, or wreckage without causing an explosion.
Concrete softened and flowed like chocolate; metal vaporized directly; monsters didn't even have time to scream before turning into wisps of smoke.
Eve stood on the rooftop and looked up.
Several white flames landed on the flesh membranes around her, instantly carbonizing and peeling off, but the flames did not touch her. She opened a dark golden energy shield the moment the flames landed.
The shield made contact with the white flames, producing a sharp hissing sound as they canceled each other out.
She watched her children perish in the rain of fire; those who hadn't been evacuated or buried ran and tumbled in the streets before turning to ashes one by one.
There was no anger, no sorrow; she simply watched, her molten gold pupils reflecting the destruction of the entire city.
Then she laughed.
"Alright," she said softly. "Out with the old, in with the new." (End of Chapter)
