Chapter 1307 Cleanup
The day after Eve died.
On the map of the Witcher Guild's temporary command center, the location of Grantzpass City is marked with a large black 'X', with the annotation: Purified, Lockdown Level A.
However, hundreds of small red dots are scattered within a 50-kilometer radius around the city, each with a brief label next to it, most of which are suspected nests of hybrids.
Bobby Singh stared at the red dots, his fingers rapidly tapping on the console, uploading the latest batch of data to the database. His eyes were bloodshot, and he felt very sleepy, but his hand movements remained precise.
"Seventh Team reports: B7 area cleanup complete. One hundred and twelve complete hybrid remains have been recovered and packaged for transport to the post-analysis department."
"The 12th squad encountered resistance, and two hybrids escaped into the mine. They are requesting reinforcements."
"Preliminary report analysis: After Eve's death, all hybrids lost their ability to actively infect others. Humans bitten or scratched no longer mutated, but existing mutated individuals retained their original characteristics, only no longer proliferated."
Various reports came through the communication channel.
Bobby grabbed his coffee cup and took a big gulp. It was cold, but he didn't care. He had to hurry and get rid of these monsters.
"Tell the 12th squad not to chase them into the mine. After confirming their location with thermal scanning, blow up the seal immediately." He said into the microphone, "Those things are just moving chunks of flesh now, not worth the risk."
"receive."
The command center door opened, and Dean and Sam walked in, carrying the chill of the outside air.
Dean's wound on his left shoulder had healed, leaving only a faint red tooth mark around his skin—Eve's last mark.
"How's it outside?" Bobby asked without looking up.
“Three more government cars have arrived and parked in front of the guild.” Dean took off his muddy jacket and threw it on a chair. “The people who came this time are of a higher rank. There’s a guy in a black suit with an insignia he can’t understand pinned to his chest.”
“A special counsel from the Department of Homeland Security, someone I’ve dealt with before.” Bobby pulled up an encrypted file. “They want the ‘full incident report’ and all the ‘abnormal biological samples’.”
"Should I give it to you?" Sam asked.
“Give us the abridged version.” Bobby pressed Enter, and the screen displayed ‘Report sent.’ “Give some samples to the low-threat ones, and keep the high-level hybrid remains and cores for ourselves; the guild needs to study them.”
Dean walked up to the map and looked at the red dots: "Crowley's catching these things too."
“I know.” Bobby pulled up another set of data, a tracking chart of demonic energy fluctuations.
The image shows that more than twenty small-scale demonic power teleportations were activated around Grantspass in the past day, and each time a batch of hybrid signals in the nearby area disappeared.
"He is gathering materials. Eve's hybrid, which combines multiple bloodlines, may be useful for the Purgatory ritual."
"So we're going to rush ahead of him and clear it out?" Sam asked.
“Yes, but not only.” Bobby pointed to several blue-marked areas on the map. “These are the government-designated isolation research zones. They’ve stationed troops there, ostensibly to study new biological threats, but in reality, they want to master the technology to control supernatural beings.”
"The government wants to build its own monster army?" Dean raised an eyebrow.
“Not surprising.” Castio’s voice came from the doorway as he walked in, his trench coat still damp with dew. “Human regimes have always been like this; it’s just that they haven’t had the opportunity to come into contact with such a concentrated collection of supernatural samples before.”
Dean looked at him. "The angels didn't intervene? Raphael and his gang just watched the government get involved?" "God gave the order," Castio said, a hint of weariness in his voice. "Angels are not allowed to interfere with the autonomous choices of human governments, as long as their actions don't directly threaten Heaven's interests. This is the content of an ancient covenant, and Raphael cannot violate it."
"So the government is capturing monsters for research, and the angels are just turning a blind eye?"
“As long as it doesn’t involve Heaven’s secrets, yes.” Castio walked to the window and looked at the government vehicles at the mouth of the valley. “But they will monitor it. If the government develops something that can threaten the angels, the treaty will be null and void.”
There was a few seconds of silence in the room.
Sam broke the silence: "Where's Adam? I didn't see him this morning."
"He said he went to the warehouse to help organize the newly arrived equipment." Dean glanced at his watch. "He's been there for two hours."
"I'll go check it out." Sam turned and went out.
Dean continued to stare at the map, circling the area where Crowley was most active: "That old bastard is speeding up the process. Eve is dead, and no one is competing with him for the raw materials. He must be preparing for the final ritual."
“What did Lor say?” Bobby asked.
“He said the Hell Line is temporarily stable, but Lucifer seems to be getting more and more impatient.” Dean recalled the brief communication a few hours earlier. “But it will be soon; he’ll be able to free up his hands soon.”
“What about Lucifer?” Bobby frowned. “Will they just destroy the portal?”
He now understands the advantages that this balanced zone in reality brings. If there is an Eden in heaven, then this is humanity's true sanctuary, the last place of rebellion.
He said there was a backup plan, but he didn't go into details.
The door to the command center was suddenly pushed open, and Sam strode in, his expression grim.
"Adam is missing."
The warehouse is located 300 meters behind the command center. It was originally an equipment depot for a mining company, but now it is filled with weapons, ammunition, and special equipment that the guild has transported from various places.
When Sam led Dean and Castio inside, the two young witchers on guard were slumped in chairs, fast asleep.
“They’ve been drugged.” Sam checked their pulses. “A strong sedative, just enough to knock them out, but not fatal.”
Dean looked around the warehouse.
Most of the equipment boxes around were intact, except for the innermost box containing portable communicators, which was open and missing three encrypted radios and a signal tracking device.
“He wasn’t kidnapped.” Dean crouched down to examine the marks on the ground. There were only one person’s footprints, all heading in the same direction, with no signs of struggle. “He walked there on his own, or...voluntarily went with someone.”
Castio closed his eyes and sensed for a few seconds, then shook his head: "There is no residual angelic energy, so it wasn't Heaven that did it."
"Who could that be?" Sam pulled up the warehouse's basic surveillance footage, which only covered the area near the entrance. It showed Adam entering alone two hours earlier and leaving alone an hour later, carrying a black tool bag.
"He took something with him." Dean stared at Adam's back in the image. "Who is he going to contact with those communication devices?"
Bobby's voice came through the communicator: "Found it. This morning, Ash used the safe house's terminal to access the guild's internal database, retrieving two files: 'Winchester Family Associates' and 'Known Safe House Coordinates.' The access logs were manually deleted forty minutes ago, but he didn't completely clear them; I've recovered some of the data." (End of Chapter)
