Chapter 1361 Choice
Over the next two days, Benny led them on a continuous journey through purgatory.
He was very familiar with the terrain of this area, if these strange places could be called terrain.
They also knew which tumorous structures had relatively safe caves underneath, which bone towers could be climbed up for observation, and which tributaries of 'rivers' had slightly less toxic water.
Benny also taught Sam and Dean to identify the weaknesses and habits of the Infernal monsters.
“The six-legged ones are called crawlers. They have poor eyesight and rely on vibrations to sense things, so you have to be careful,” Benny said as he walked. “The humanoid ones are called biteers. They are fast, but their cervical spines are fragile, so it’s easy to attack from behind. There’s also a flying one called a shrieker. If you encounter one, just run away. Their cries can shatter your soul.”
They spent the night under a natural archway made of enormous bones.
Benny started a fire, fueled by dried slime from some kind of monster. It burned with pale blue flames, produced no smoke, but smelled terrible.
Sam's leg injury has improved considerably with the help of the medicine Benny gave him, and he can now walk normally.
Dean's wound on his left arm had also scabbed over.
The three of them sat around the fire, eating the 'food' Benny had brought: a tuber dug out of a fleshy growth and roasted until it had a rubbery texture.
“You’re still looking for other people, right?” Benny suddenly asked.
Dean nodded: "There are many other demon hunters who were sucked in with us. As the guild leader, we have an obligation to find them."
“It’s difficult.” Benny stuck a dagger into the tuber and turned it over the fire. “Purgatory is vast, larger than you can imagine, and the space is unstable. Today it’s a plain, tomorrow it may become an abyss. Your friends may be anywhere, or they may… be dead.”
"I want to see him alive or dead," Sam said firmly in a deep voice.
Benny glanced at him, said nothing, and continued grilling the food.
The silence lasted for several minutes, broken only by the crackling of flames and the faint roars of monsters in the distance.
“Actually…” Benny suddenly spoke, his voice low, “I know a way that might allow us to leave here.”
Dean and Sam both looked at him.
Benny didn't look up, staring at the flames: "Not maybe, definitely."
I know of a passage, a rift of purgatory energy, that connects the human world to this place.
However, it has limitations; only living humans can pass through.
Supernatural beings, like myself, angels, or demons, cannot pass through. Their energy structures repel us; forcing our way through will only result in being torn apart.
He paused.
“I can take you there, but on one condition: you must take me with you, not my body, but my soul.”
“I know an ancient blood magic that can temporarily seal my soul in an object, such as a bone or a ring. You can take that object through the passage back to the human world and then release me to find a suitable body... or I can just exist in soul form.”
He looked up at Dean and Sam.
“I don’t want to die here, but I also know that as a vampire, you won’t easily trust me, so… this is my deal: I’ll take you to the passage, and you’ll take my soul home. Is that fair?”
Dean and Sam locked eyes; the temptation was too great.
Leave this hell, return to the human world, and continue the fight.
But the price was helping a vampire, someone they were supposed to hunt.
“Where is the passage?” Sam asked. “In the ‘Shattered Temple’,” Benny said. “It’s about a day’s journey from here, but it’s a dangerous place. It’s the lair of several high-ranking infernal creatures. You’ll have to fight your way through to get there.”
"What about the others? How long can the passage last?" Dean's smile gradually turned serious. "What will happen to the Witcher we're looking for if we leave?"
Benny remained silent for a long time.
“That’s your choice.” He finally shook his head slightly. “I can take just the two of you, but if you want to find others… there might not be enough time. The passage isn’t permanently open; it has a cycle.”
"According to my calculations, the next opening will be in... about three days. If you miss it in three days, you'll have to wait another month."
Dean stood up, walked to the edge of the archway, and looked out at the boundless dark red.
He wants to leave.
I want to leave this hellish place immediately, return to the guild, continue fighting the remnants of Leviathan, and continue protecting humanity.
But he also wanted to find Castio, to find the Witcher he fought alongside, and to bring everyone home.
“Find the others first.” Dean turned to look at Benny. “The more the better, then… let them choose for themselves. Those who want to leave, let them take you with them. Those who want to stay… stay with us. At least leave some hope and a place for those witchers who are still alive but haven’t gathered together.”
Benny stared at him for a long time, then slowly nodded.
“Okay.” He stood up. “But we need to be quick; every second is precious.”
The following day, they were like a sharp knife, traversing through purgatory.
Benny leads the way, and Dean and Sam fight.
They suffered seven large-scale attacks and more than twenty smaller skirmishes, killing countless monsters—Dean had lost count.
His new weapon, the machete Benny had given him, forged from a monster's spine, was now covered in a yellow stain that could never be wiped off.
But they also found people.
Five hours later, in a forest of bones, they rescued three trapped witchers, one of whom had been stabbed in the abdomen and was bleeding heavily. Benny used blood magic to temporarily keep him alive.
Ten hours later, they found five people in a burrow of flesh. They had been hiding there for two days, running out of food and water, and were almost in despair.
A day later, they encountered a patrol of infernal creatures.
During the fierce battle, Sam recognized the opponent's fighting style as belonging to a guild member.
As expected, after defeating the monster, twelve witchers emerged from the skeletal fortress where the monster was hiding, led by Castio.
When they met again, Dean almost didn't recognize Castio.
He had lost a lot of weight, had several new scars on his face, and his eyes had become sharp and tired, but he was still alive, and... he seemed stronger.
He held a bone knife in his hand, his swordsmanship clean and swift; he had killed three biters single-handedly in the battle just now.
“Dean,” Castio said excitedly, his voice hoarse but calm, “Sam, you’re still alive.”
“You too.” Dean walked over and patted him hard on the shoulder. “Damn, I knew you wouldn’t die.”
Castio forced a smile, then looked at Benny warily: "A vampire?"
“A temporary ally,” Dean explained simply. “He knows how to leave.” (End of Chapter)
