Chapter 1427 People
Every bone was being smashed, every muscle was being torn apart, every blood vessel was being burned to ashes, and then they were reassembled, smashed, torn apart, and burned again.
She counted the muffled sounds outside.
One sound, two sounds, three sounds... each sound represented the death of a person, and she didn't know how much longer she could hold on.
But she remembered the names of those nineteen people: Emily, Old John, Lily… She couldn’t die; she had to live for them.
Kyle could no longer feel the pain inside the energy pod.
It wasn't that he didn't feel pain; it was that after the pain reached its extreme, his nerves became completely numb. He only knew that his body was breaking, burning, and rebuilding, but he couldn't feel anything anymore.
I just closed my eyes and thought about that face.
That tired, melancholy face that finally said 'live' to him.
He's still alive. Is that person still alive?
He didn't know, but he wanted to get out alive and find him.
The muffled thuds from next door grew more frequent.
The tenth tone, the twentieth tone, the thirtieth tone...
I don't know how much time has passed.
Seven days.
Or seventy years.
When the liquid in the energy chamber finally receded and the hatch opened, it took Isaac three seconds to realize he was still alive.
He looked down at his hands.
This hand is no longer the same as it was three days ago.
Pale blue lines bulged on the skin, like blood vessels, like incantations, or like some kind of living thing moving under the skin. The lines emitted a faint blue light, which was particularly dazzling under the pure white light.
He clenched his fist.
power.
He could feel that inhuman power surging within him, like a newly tamed river, still struggling and roaring, but already firmly in his grasp.
He stepped out of the energy chamber.
There were two people standing outside.
Elena.
Michelle.
They could be vaguely recognized from their swollen features, and pale blue patterns appeared on their bodies. Elena's patterns were very faint, like a thin veil.
Michelle's is very bright, like a sword just forged in a furnace.
But at this moment, all three of them were shocked by each other's physiques.
The three people looked at each other without saying a word.
Then the fourth hatch opened.
the fifth.
sixth.
The seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth hatches opened one after another.
Ten people.
Standing on the trial platform.
Behind them were fifty empty, blood-splattered hulls.
Of the sixty people, ten survived.
Wu Heng emerged from the void and stood before them.
He looked at the ten people: ten tired faces, ten pairs of eyes burning with pale blue light, and ten human bodies reshaped by angelic energy.
"Congratulations," he said.
Ten people were watching him.
There were no cheers, no tears, no hugs, just staring at him, breathing quietly, awaiting the next command. But the breathing sounded like a turbine spinning in their chests, and everyone's body swelled up into a bloated fat man, weighing as much as 500 pounds.
To say they are fat is an understatement; they are actually swollen. Their skin is bulging, and their blood vessels are bulging out as if they want to jump out of the swollen skin. This is an abnormal condition.
Wu Heng nodded.
"The Demon Hunter Knights are now assembled."
He turned and headed towards the exit.
"The rest room is over there. Rest for four hours. You still have the final modifications to make before you leave. This swelling is only temporary."
The door closed behind him.
The ten people stood still for a while, then walked to the rest room. It took them five times longer than usual to walk back to the barracks from the testing platform.
It's not because I'm tired, it's because I can't walk anymore.
Isaac walked at the front, each step feeling like stepping into a swamp.
With every movement of his body, it swelled up, not in a healthy, muscular way, but in an uncontrolled, morbid swelling. His skin was stretched so tight by the muscles underneath that it looked like it was about to burst, veins bulged, and every blood vessel was throbbing.
His shoulders were disproportionately broad, like a giant forcibly widened, but his legs hadn't caught up, making him look deformed and clumsy.
“I fucking…” Thomas’s breathing sounded like a broken bellows.
His face turned purple, and the veins on his neck bulged. The energy surged under his skin, forming undulating bulges, like countless snakes crawling inside him: "I feel like I'm about to explode at any moment, like a balloon that's been inflated to its maximum capacity, unable to withstand the slightest impact."
Marcus didn't say anything.
The seventy-year-old man leaned on his old hunting rifle, each step requiring his full strength.
His skin swelled and became transparent, revealing the slow flow of golden energy beneath, like lava surging beneath the earth's crust. His eyes were bloodshot, the whites of his eyes turned pale red, and points of light danced wildly deep within his pupils.
Elena's hand holding the silver sword trembled.
It wasn't out of fear, but because she couldn't control herself. Her swollen, radish-like fingers spasmed and tightened, her nails digging into her palms, drawing blood. But the blood wasn't red; it was a pale gold, mixed with luminous particles, like molten metal.
"How much further?" Michelle's voice came from behind.
At nineteen, she didn't look like a human being at this moment, but more like a sack stuffed full of things. Her face was swollen, and her eyes were squeezed into two slits, but a dazzling golden light shone through the slits.
“Two hundred meters,” Hans said, panting.
His mind was still working, but his body was no longer under his control; with every step he took, his knees felt like they were about to shatter.
Two hundred meters.
They walked for half an hour.
When the barracks door was pushed open, the ten men collapsed almost simultaneously. They didn't just sit down; they collapsed in the truest sense of the word, like ten bags of rotten flesh slamming onto the concrete floor.
Isaac lay on the ground, his face pressed against the cold earth.
He could feel his heartbeat—not one beat at a time, but a continuous roar, like a never-ending engine. With each heartbeat, a surge of energy rushed from his chest to his limbs, making his blood vessels ache.
"We..." Karim's voice came from the corner, hoarse like the desert wind, "...can we still be considered human?"
No one answered him.
Because nobody knows the answer.
No one could sleep that night.
It's not that I don't want to sleep, it's that I can't fall asleep.
The energy in their bodies was like ten thousand ants crawling in their blood vessels, gnawing at their nerves, and burning their internal organs. Some people curled up in bed, some lay on the ground, some leaned against the corner of the wall, and some hugged their legs, curled up like babies.
Isaac lay in bed, staring at the ceiling.
There was a crack in the ceiling. He stared at the crack, trying to distract himself, but it was no use. The energy surged within him, each surge causing his body to twitch.
He heard Thomas growl from the bed next door, like a wounded beast.
He heard Marcus muttering to himself in the corner, not knowing what he was saying, and he also heard Michelle crying, not loudly, but with suppressed, silent sobs, her shoulders shaking.
Then he heard Lyra's voice.
"Let me try." (End of Chapter)
