Chapter 1428 Final Modification
Leila got up and staggered to Michelle's bedside.
She raised her hand, and a soft, pale golden light appeared in her palm, falling on Michelle and seeping into her skin.
Michelle's sobs gradually subsided.
"Are you feeling better?" Leila asked.
Michelle nodded.
Lyra turned and walked toward Thomas, then Marcus, then Elena, and then everyone else.
Her light fell upon them, and the violent energy seemed to calm down slightly.
But Leila's face grew paler and paler.
With each person she cured, she grew weaker. In the end, she slumped in the center of the barracks, her face deathly pale, too weak to even move a finger.
“You’re insane,” Isaac’s voice came from the ground. “You’ll die this way.”
Leila smiled, a weak but genuine smile.
"I won't die," she gasped. "I know what I'm doing."
The next morning, the door opened.
Wu Heng stood at the door.
He looked at the ten men who had spent the night slumped in the barracks, at their bloated, contorted bodies, and at the light in their eyes that was somewhere between human and inhuman.
"Come with me." He walked outside.
Ten men followed him out of the barracks and toward the testing platform.
But this time, the testing ground is different.
Ten more metal beds were added to the top.
The bed was wide and long, its surface covered with dense runes and barbs. Beside it were various tools: knives, pliers, saws, needles, and countless other instruments whose names I did not know, all gleaming coldly under the lamplight.
Huge hooks hung on the walls, countless metal chains dangled from the ceiling, and complex blood-red magic circles were engraved on the ground.
This place doesn't look like a medical room; it looks more like a torture chamber.
"Alchemy transformation." Wu Heng pointed to the tools with various strange patterns, "to turn your current bodies into something truly usable."
Ten people stood at the edge of the testing platform, looking at the metal beds.
“You have too much energy in your body, but your bodies can’t control it. It’s like a knife with a sharp blade but a soft handle. It needs to be reforged in the most primitive way.”
He walked to the first bed and patted the surface.
"This process will be very painful, a hundred times more painful than energy fusion, because this time it's not burning your bones, it's taking you apart into parts, picking out the usable ones, throwing away the unusable ones, and then putting the rest back together."
Who wants to go first?
Isaac was the first to go up.
He lay on the metal bed, which was cold, and the barbs dug into his back. The runes began to glow, like countless hands gripping his spine.
Wu Heng raised his left hand, and the four-colored light wheel on the balancing glove began to rotate. A dazzling blue-white light shot out from the glove and landed on Isaac.
Then Isaac felt real pain.
His skin was torn open, starting from his chest, with a gash that opened to both sides, revealing the muscles and bones underneath.
There was no bleeding; the wounds were sealed by energy, and only pink muscle tissue and white fascia were visible.
Then comes the muscle.
The muscles were peeled off one by one, like peeling an orange, torn from the bones. He could feel each muscle fiber being stretched, and he could feel the subtle vibrations as they were peeled from the bones.
Next came the bones. His ribs were pulled out one by one and placed on a metal tray next to him. The bones were still stained with blood and gleamed with a pale, cold light under the lamp.
He could feel it throughout the entire process.
Every second. Every millimeter.
He didn't call out.
He just gritted his teeth, staring intently at the ceiling and at the runes flowing in the void.
I don't know how much time has passed.
It could take an hour, or it could take a day.
When the disassembled parts were reassembled, Isaac found that his body had changed.
No longer bulky, no longer heavy.
He sat up and looked down at himself.
Then he froze.
That's not him.
The body still retained its human form, with a head, hands, and feet, and could stand and walk, but every detail reminded him: this was not human.
His skin had turned dark gray, like weathered rock.
The surface was covered with fine cracks, from which a dark red light shone, like flowing lava from underground. Those cracks were not wounds, but his new skin, a part of his body.
His shoulders were twice as wide as before, but no longer the deformed swelling; they were real, steel-like broadness.
Each muscle looked as if it had been sculpted with a chisel, its lines as hard as a knife blade. The surface of those muscles was covered with a translucent keratin layer that gleamed with a cold luster under the light.
His fingers grew longer, his knuckles thicker, and his nails turned black, thick, and hard, like they were cast in metal.
He clenched his fist, and the cracks on his fist simultaneously glowed with a dark red light, which was extremely dazzling.
His face changed.
Higher cheekbones, wider jaw, and two prominent bony ridges on the forehead that extend from the brow bone to the hairline.
The spines of his bones were also dark gray, and their surfaces were covered with glowing cracks. His eyes had turned a pure dark red, with no pupils or whites, only two burning flames.
He opened his mouth and let out a low growl from his throat, a sound that sounded less like a human and more like some kind of large feline.
“Isaac,” Wu Heng’s voice came from the side, as calm as if he were reading a menu, “Berserker type, codename ‘Lava’.”
Isaac got out of bed.
He was at least 30 centimeters taller than before, his head almost touching the ceiling, and he stood there like a moving volcano.
The surrounding air was slightly distorted, scorched by the heat radiating from his body.
“Next,” Wu Heng said calmly.
Thomas lay down.
When Thomas got out of bed, his body had changed as well.
His skin had turned a dark brown, like sun-dried leather, covered with fine scales—not fish scales, but thicker, harder keratinous scales, like those of a pangolin.
The scales have sharp edges and gleam with a metallic sheen under the light. When he moves, the scales rub against each other, making a rustling sound.
The scar on his face was still there, but it was no longer a pink scar; it had turned dark gold, like a piece of metal molten into it, extending from the corner of his eye all the way to his chin.
The scar has tiny barbs along its edges, like a row of serrated edges.
His fingers transformed into real claws, each of his five fingers ending in a ten-centimeter-long black claw blade, curved like a hook, sharp enough to cut through steel.
With a gentle stroke, he created a deep engraving on the edge of the metal bed.
His eyes had turned a pure silver-gray, like two polished pieces of metal, with his pupils shrinking to a vertical line, like a reptile. When he moved his eyes, a slight metallic scraping sound could be heard.
"Thomas, Berserker; codename 'Hunter Blade'."
Marcus is the third. (End of Chapter)
