Chapter 271 Chief Advisor Xun Yu
Chapter 271 Chief Advisor Xun Yu
Among the scholar-bureaucrats during the Three Kingdoms period of the Later Han Dynasty, there was a particularly dazzling counselor Xun Yu.
Xun Yu was rich in strategy and foresight. He made an immortal contribution to Cao Cao's unification of the north and was compared to Cao Cao's ovary.
But in the end he got burned and died of grief and anger, staged a historical tragedy.
Xun Yu's death was fundamentally caused by his inner conflicts.
Xun Yu not only hoped that Cao Cao would achieve hegemony, but also had an inseparable affection for the Han Dynasty, thus becoming a burial object of the Han Dynasty.
Xun Yu in history was a scholar with a very contradictory heart. He regarded himself as a Han official and was also Cao Cao's counselor.
According to Xun Yu's idea, he should do his best to assist Cao Cao in order to help the Han Dynasty.
It is precisely because of this that Xun Yu abandoned Yuan Shao and joined Cao Cao, who was more promising.
However, as Cao Cao's wings matured, Emperor Xian of the Han Dynasty was bound to be increasingly ignored and completely reduced to a puppet.
And this situation is what Xun Yu least wants to see.
However, Cao Cao, who used the emperor to control the princes, also committed many arrogances as his power continued to expand.
Xun Yu's experience made Su Chen feel sorry for him. Such a talented person could not die well in the end.
At this moment, everyone in the Three Kingdoms period was curious and guessed which famous person would be remembered in history.
"He is Cao Cao's chief adviser and the chief contributor to Cao Cao's unification of the north. He is known as the most talented king."
"He planned and formulated a strategic policy for Cao Cao to unify the north, and it was his plan to coerce the emperor to control the princes."
"In the Battle of Guandu, he made suggestions, which enabled Cao Cao to win the battle and laid the foundation for his unification of northern my country."
"The Battle of Guandu is also one of the famous battles in Chinese history in which the weak defeated the strong."
"He has been handling government affairs for more than ten years, and has successively recommended a large number of talents to Cao Cao such as Xun You, Sima Yi, Guo Jia, etc. He is Cao Cao's chief adviser Xun Yu."
Liu Bei: I knew there would be Xun Yu. If Xun Yu could have come to join me, the tragedy would not have happened later.
He has always felt regretful that Xun Yu could not come to join him, and he missed a great talent.
In terms of strategy, Xun Yu planned and formulated a blueprint and military route for Cao Cao to unify the north, and revised Cao Cao's strategic policy many times, which was appreciated by Cao Cao.
Whether it is to deepen the foundation to control the world, or to welcome the emperor, it is enough to illustrate the strength of Xun Yu's strategy.
In terms of tactics, Xun Yu saved the three cities of Yanzhou in the face of Lu Bu's rebellion, and made many achievements by cleverly scheming to choke Yuan Shao in Guandu to cover up his unintentional surprise attack on Jingzhou.
In terms of politics, Xun Yu recommended a large number of talents to Cao Cao, such as Xun You, Chen Qun, Du Xi, Xi Zhicai, Guo Jia and so on.
Xun Yu's resourcefulness can be said to be exhaustive, and he knew Cao Cao's nature well.
If you oppose Cao Cao's addition of Jiuxi, you will definitely be tolerated by Cao Cao, which will lead to disaster.
No smart person would do this, but Xun Yu did it.
He knew very well why Xun Yu did what he did.
The reason why the discussion of persuading Cao Cao to join Jiuxi arose was because the Liu family's ancestral temple Sheji had fallen.
At such a sad moment, anyone with a clear conscience will feel extremely sad.
Xun Yu was obviously a man with an unyielding conscience. He couldn't help himself and could not suppress the condemnation of his inner conscience.
Therefore, even if he died, Xun Yu could not ignore Cao Cao's behavior.
In fact, Xun Yu's fault was that he committed himself to Cao Cao and made more plans for him.
Xun Yu also knew that Cao Cao had arrogant thoughts, but he was still unwilling to agree with him, and remonstrated with Cao Cao with the words of loyalty.
But because of this, he was hated by Cao Cao and died as a martyr.
However, Xun Yu's loyalty to the Han Dynasty was enough to be known to the world.
If someone so loyal to the Han Dynasty can be used by him, he will be much more sure of helping the Han Dynasty.
"Xun Yu, courtesy name Wenruo, was from Yingchuan."
"Xun Yu's grandfather, Xun Shu, was very famous at that time."
"When Xun Yu was young, He Ti, a famous scholar in Nanyang, recognized his character very much and commented that Xun Yu was a talent who could assist the emperor."
"In 189 AD, Xun Yu was promoted to Xiaolian and appointed as the palace guard, in charge of the emperor's pen and ink and other items."
"During Dong Zhuo's Rebellion, Xun Yu abandoned his official position and returned to his hometown, and told his fellow villagers."
"Yingchuan is a place surrounded by enemies. Whenever there is unrest in the world, it often becomes a battleground for military strategists. Please leave here immediately, folks."
"But unfortunately, the villagers are nostalgic for their old land and don't want to leave."
"At this time, Han Fu, a fellow villager in Jizhou, sent people to pick up Xunyu, and Xunyu had to move his clan to Jizhou for refuge alone."
"After that, Dong Zhuo sent people to plunder various places and did not return until Yingchuan. Most of Xun Yu's fellow villagers who stayed in Yingchuan were killed by Dong Zhuo's men."
"However, after arriving in Jizhou, Yuan Shao had already replaced Han Fu's position, and when Xun Yu arrived, he was treated as an honored guest."
"Xun Yu's younger brother and fellow countryman Guo Tu and others all received appointments from Yuan Shao, but Xun Yu believed that Yuan Shao would not be able to achieve great things in the end."
"So he defected to Cao Cao in 191, when Xun Yu was 29 years old."
"Cao Cao said very happily, you are my counselor Zhang Liang."
"In 192 AD, Cao Cao led Yanzhou as a herdsman and later became the general of Zhendong. Xun Yu followed him in the battle as a Sima."
Yang Jian: Xun Yu can be compared with Zhuge Liang. Both of them are great talents who assisted the country's government.
He was familiar with Chen Shou's "Three Kingdoms", which focused on his evaluation of Xun Yu.
Chen Shou said that Xun Yu was noble, knowledgeable and elegant, and had the demeanor of assisting the emperor.
However, his lack of insight and foresight into people and things prevented Xun Yu's ambition to revitalize the Han Dynasty from being fully realized.
Although Chen Shou's evaluation of Xun Yu tends to be positive, he does not agree with Chen Shou's evaluation of Xun Yu.
In his opinion, Xun Yu had no choice but to assist Cao Cao in dominating the north in order to support the Han Dynasty.
Its purpose is to continue the Han Dynasty and the ancestral temple when the world is in chaos. It is not that they are ignorant of Cao Cao's ambition.
Since Cao Cao has achieved hegemony, he will no longer be satisfied with being a small Han minister.
Xun Yu would definitely be dissatisfied with Cao Cao if he blocked Cao Cao from being promoted to Duke Wei.
The final outcome seems to be destined, Xun Yu died and died in order to show his loyalty to the Han Dynasty to future generations.
He examined Xun Yu's actions, made suggestions for Cao Cao, helped the Han Dynasty, and saved the country from danger.
He understood very well that Xun Yu's original intention was to save the people from water and fire.
But in the end, Dong Zhao persuaded Cao Cao to join Wei Gong, but Xun Yu dissuaded him, which eventually led to his death.
He believed that Xun Yu's behavior could not be fully blamed.
After all, Xun Yu upholds loyalty, but the success or failure of things is beyond his control.
Although Xun Yu's talents were enough to save the country from danger, Cao Cao's power was so strong that Xun Yu was unable to correct Cao Cao's behavior. He could only commit suicide to show his loyalty.
"In 194, Cao Cao campaigned eastward against Tao Qian in Xuzhou and appointed Xun Yu to take charge of the stay."
"At this time, Chen Gong, Zhang Miao and others took the opportunity to rebel against Cao in Yanzhou and secretly welcomed Lu Bu."
"But all the cities in Yanzhou responded to Chen Gong and others, and Xun Yu urgently summoned Xiahou Dun, the governor of Dongjun, to come to the rescue."
"After Xiahou Dun arrived, he killed dozens of people who planned to rebel that night, and then the morale of the army was stabilized."
"At this time, Guo Gong, the governor of Yuzhou, also led tens of thousands of people to attack. Everyone was very scared. Guo Gong asked to see Xun Yu."
"Xun Yu was about to go, but Xiahou Dun stopped him."
"But Xun Yu insisted on going out of the city to lobby Guo Gong to avoid being attacked from both sides."
"Guo Gong saw that Xun Yu had no fear and thought that Juan City was easy to defend but difficult to attack, so he led his troops away."
"After that, Xun Yu sent Chen Yu to Fan and Dong'a counties, and finally saved these three cities."
"Wait until Cao Cao comes back and defeats Lu Bu in Puyang."
"After Tao Qian's death, Cao Cao planned to take the opportunity to continue attacking Xuzhou and then pacify Lu Bu when he came back."
"Xun Yu tried to dissuade him by saying that when Liu Bang secured Guanzhong and Emperor Guan Wu Liu Xiu secured Hanoi, they all relied on consolidating their own foundations to control the world."
"The general relies on the achievements created by Yanzhou, and Yanzhou is based on the Yellow River and Jishui. It is an important place in the world and is easy to defend but difficult to attack."
"It is the general's Guanzhong and Hanoi, so Yanzhou should be stabilized first."
"And if we attack Xuzhou and there are many troops left behind, there will not be enough troops in the front."
"If Lu Bu takes the opportunity to invade, only Juancheng, Fan and Wei can be protected."
"No other place can be owned by us. This would be equivalent to losing Yanzhou."
"If Xuzhou is not pacified and Yanzhou is lost, the general will have nowhere to stand."
"And when the children of Xuzhou think of the shame of their father and brother being killed, they will fight to the death."
"At this time, the grain has matured. If we rush to harvest the grain, we can defeat Lu Bu in one battle."
"So Cao Cao followed Xun Yu's advice, fought Lu Bu again, and divided his troops to pacify the counties."
"Lu Bu failed and fled, and Yanzhou was pacified."
Li Shimin: If Xun Yu hadn't seen through the conspiracy of Chen Gong and others in time, Cao Cao might not even have a chance to make a comeback, but Xun Yu ended up like that. It's really sad to think about it.
Xun Yu was highly valued and trusted by Cao Cao, and could be said to be the most important counselor under Cao Cao.
When Cao Cao led his troops to conquer Tao Qian in Xuzhou eastward, Chen Gong, Zhang Miao and others rebelled directly because they were dissatisfied with Cao Cao's attack on Xuzhou and killed innocent people indiscriminately.
What makes the situation even more serious is that Chen Gong, Zhang Miao and others secretly colluded with Lu Bu to welcome Lu Bu into Yanzhou.
When Lu Bu arrived with his troops, Zhang Miao sent people to deceive Xun Yu, hoping that Xun Yu would think that Lu Bu was a friendly army.
Fortunately, Xun Yu was alert and suspected that Zhang Miao and others were plotting rebellion. He immediately asked the army to strengthen defense and urgently summoned Xiahou Dun, the governor of Dongjun.
At that time, all the soldiers and horses in Yanzhou cities were taken away by Cao Cao to attack Xuzhou. The city was empty, so Lu Bu led his troops into the city.
At that time, Chen Gong instigated many people to rebel, and many people wanted to rebel against Cao Cao.
It was not until Xiahou Dun arrived and killed dozens of rebels one after another that the morale of the army stabilized.
Guo Gong, the governor of Yuzhou, originally helped Lu Bu to seize the city, but he finally gave up after Xun Yu's persuasion.
Later, Xun Yu and Cheng Yu made suggestions and defended the city until Cao Cao returned with his troops.
Both Chen Gong and Zhang Miao were Cao Cao's most trusted people. This betrayal was almost devastating to Cao Cao.
The attack on Xuzhou failed, and his home base was robbed. The blow to Cao Cao can be imagined.
If Xun Yu hadn't turned the tide, I'm afraid nothing would have happened to Cao Cao.
"In 196 AD, Emperor Xian of the Han Dynasty returned to Luoyang from Hedong. Cao Cao discussed with everyone whether to welcome Emperor Xian and make Xu County his capital."
"Many people believe that Xuzhou has not yet been pacified and that Yang Feng and others are difficult to deal with."
"But Xun Yu said that Duke Wen of Jin welcomed King Xiang of Zhou back, and the princes obeyed."
"When Emperor Gaozu of the Han Dynasty conquered Xiang Yu in the east, he wore plain clothes in mourning for the Righteous Emperor and made the world return to his heart."
"Since the emperor went into exile, the generals were the first to raise up righteous soldiers."
"Although I didn't go to Chang'an, I was fighting against the disaster outside, and I missed the royal family very much."
"Now that I have returned to Luoyang, if I can take this opportunity to support my Lord, it will be a great success."
"It is simple to have the greatest public spirit and make the heroes of the world obey."
"Supporting righteousness to recruit talents from all over the world is a great virtue."
"Cao Cao adopted Xun Yu's suggestion and welcomed Emperor Xian to Xu County."
"Cao Cao was granted the title of General, and Xun Yu was granted the title of Imperial Attendant, acting as the Minister of Secretariat."
"This move also gave Cao Cao the strategic advantage of serving the emperor and commanding the princes."
"Although Cao Cao often fights abroad, he plans all major military and state affairs with Xun Yu."
"And Xun Yu also recommended a large number of talents to Cao Cao such as Xun You, Sima Yi, Guo Jia and so on."
"Ever since Cao Cao welcomed Emperor Xian of Han to Xu County, Yuan Shao was dissatisfied."
"And after annexing the area north of the Yellow River, it became very powerful and became increasingly arrogant."
"On Cao Cao's side, Lu Bu was intruding in the east, and Zhang Xiu was resisting in the south. Zhang Xiu defeated Cao's army in Wancheng."
Li Longji: Although Xun Yu had good intentions in serving the emperor to command the princes, it was obvious that Cao Cao would not be satisfied.
At the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, foreign relatives interfered in politics and eunuchs caused chaos, which led to the corruption of the imperial court and the people's livelihood.
At that time, all the heroes in the world rose up together, and all the princes raised their armies one after another.
When Dong Zhuo's Rebellion occurred, the Eastern Han Dynasty also went into a complete decline, and reviving the Han Dynasty became a goal that some people must achieve.
Xun Yu wanted to help the Han Dynasty wholeheartedly, but at this time the Han Dynasty was in devastation.
Therefore, Xun Yu needed to find a suitable person to help him fulfill his wish to help the Han Dynasty. This person was the great hero Cao Cao.
In fact, Xun Yu also knew that Cao Cao was not a thing in the pond, and he was not an easy master to control.
But Xun Yu also knew that if he wanted to fulfill his wish to help the Han Dynasty and purge the world, he must have an iron-blooded warlord like Cao Cao to complete it.
Therefore, in his opinion, Xun Yu at that time was also a contradictory individual.
But Xun Yu had no choice but to take a gamble.
But obviously, Xun Yu lost the bet.
As Cao Cao defeated the Yellow Turban Army, Han Xian Emperor Liu Xie returned to Luoyang under the escort of Yang Feng and others. Xun Yu supported Cao Cao in his proposal to welcome the emperor.
Xun Yu hoped that Cao Cao could assist Liu Xie, Emperor Xian of the Han Dynasty, and be an auxiliary minister to stabilize the world and revive the Han Dynasty.
But Cao Cao embarked on the road of assisting ministers and became a powerful minister under one person and above ten thousand people. Perhaps Xun Yu never thought about his idea of serving the emperor to order the princes, but in the end, it resulted in a situation where Cao Cao used the emperor to order the princes.
"Yuan Shao was even more proud, so he wrote a letter to Cao Cao. The content was ridiculous and arrogant."
"Cao Cao was furious after seeing it, and all the generals thought it was because of his defeat by Zhang Xiu."
"Only Xun Yu saw that Cao Cao was worried about other things, so he asked Cao Cao why."
"Cao Cao showed the letter to Xun Yu and told him that he wanted to attack Yuan Shao, an unjust man."
"But I can't defeat him with my current strength, what should I do?"
"Xun Yu said that since ancient times, if you have talent, even if you are weak, you will definitely become strong."
"But if you don't have talent, even if you are strong now, you will become weak."
"This truth can be seen from the lives and deaths of Liu Bang and Xiang Yu."
"Yuan Shao is a man who treats others kindly on the surface, but in fact he is jealous of talents. This is a measure of tolerance."
"And hesitation in doing things is a strategy."
"Military discipline is lax, and although there are many soldiers, it is difficult for them to function. This is the use of troops."
"Furthermore, Yuan Shao has been a high-ranking official for generations and has a distinguished family. He likes to seek fame and reputation. This is a virtue."
"But the general surpasses him in terms of measurement, strategy, military use, and virtue. Even if he is strong now, what's the use."
"He also suggested that Han Sui, Ma Chao and others in Guanzhong should be appeased first, while matters in Guanxi can be left to Zhong Yao."
"In this way, we can safely capture Lu Bu first, and then plot against Yuan Shao."
Zhao Kuangyin: Xun Yu was devoted to the Han Dynasty. If he could defect to Liu Bei, perhaps the trajectory of history would be very different.
It is reasonable to say that Xun Yu was in the Cao camp but his heart was in the Han Dynasty.
At first, Xun Yu moved to Yuan Shao's territory to avoid military disaster.
Yuan Shao was very happy to see Xun Yu coming. He went to visit him personally and treated him like a distinguished guest.
However, Xun Yu believed that Yuan Shao could not help the Han Dynasty unify the world.
Therefore, he left Yuan Shao as early as possible and went to join Cao Cao, who could help the Han Dynasty unify the world.
The second is that after Xun Yu defected to Cao Cao, the most important advice he gave Cao Cao was to persuade Cao Cao to welcome the emperor.
Therefore, Cao Cao welcomed Emperor Xian of the Han Dynasty, but what Cao Cao wanted was to use the emperor to control the princes.
However, when Xun Yu put forward this idea, it was indeed to let Cao Cao control the princes, but it was not to let Cao Cao hold the emperor hostage.
But to truly protect the emperor, so that Emperor Xian of the Han Dynasty would not be harmed by people like Dong Zhuo again.
After being protected, Cao Cao was asked to help the Emperor of Han conquer the world, and ultimately achieve the goal of unifying the country.
The third is that later Cao Cao wanted to be granted the title of Duke of Wei in Jin Dynasty, so he sent people to ask for Xun Yu's opinion, hoping to get Xun Yu's approval.
But Xun Yu believed that Cao Cao's purpose in raising his army was to help the Emperor of Han to uphold the world.
Now that Jin has granted the title of Duke of Wei, he has selfish motives and is not the behavior of a gentleman.
Cao Cao just wanted to be promoted to the Duke of Wei, not to the King of Wei, let alone to become the emperor.
But Xun Yu did not agree, which shows that Xun Yu's thoughts were indeed devoted to the Han Dynasty.
All these can show that Xun Yu has always been loyal to the Han Dynasty.
"In 198 AD, Cao Cao defeated Zhang Xiu, captured Lu Bu, pacified Xuzhou, and then confronted Yuan Shao."
"After Yuan Shao defeated Gongsun Zan, he dominated the four states and was the strongest separatist force at that time."
"Kong Rong told Xun Yu that Yuan Shao had a vast territory and a strong army, and he had counselors such as Tian Feng, Shen Pei, and Feng Ji."
"And Yan Liang and Wen Chou are the bravest of the three armies. It will be difficult for him to lead the army to defeat them."
"Xun Yu said that although Yuan Shao had many soldiers but his laws were not strict, Tian Feng was headstrong and easy to offend."
"Xu You is greedy and indiscreet, he is dictatorial but has no plan, he is decisive and willful in the face of discipline."
"These two are in charge of the rear. If Xu You's family breaks the law, they will not let it go. If they are not lenient, Xu You will definitely rebel."
"As for Yan Liang and Wen Chou, they are just brave men and can be captured in a single battle."
"Just one word strengthened Cao Cao's confidence in defeating Yuan Shao."
"In 200 AD, Cao Cao and Yuan Shao fought successively."
"Cao's army defended Guandu, and Yuan Shao besieged Cao Cao."
"At this time, Cao's army was about to run out of food and grass, so he wrote to Xun Yu and wanted to return to Xu County."
"Xun Yu wrote back and said that although there is little food and grass now, if we retreat first, we will definitely be passive."
"The general resisted the enemy with one-tenth of his troops, strangled the enemy's throat, and prevented the enemy from advancing. He has been holding on for half a year."
"Yuan Shao's momentum has been exhausted, and the situation is bound to change."
"This is a good opportunity to use cunning tactics. Don't lose the opportunity."
"So Cao Cao gave up his plan to withdraw his troops and sent out surprise troops to attack Yuan Shao's grain and grass garrison. Yuan Shao was defeated."
"And Shenpei arrested Xu You's wife and children because his family did not abide by the law."
"Xu You betrayed Yuan Shao in anger and defected to Cao Cao."
"Yan Liang and Wen Chou were both killed in the battle, and Tian Feng was killed because he offended Yuan Shao with his advice."
"Everything among Yuan Shao's generals and counselors is as Xun Yu expected."
Wang Anshi: The biggest contributor to the victory in the Battle of Guandu was Xun Yu.
After Cao Cao welcomed the emperor, he gained a legitimate reputation to fight in all directions, govern the court, and ushered in the subsequent Battle of Guandu.
At that time, the battle between Cao Cao's army and Yuan Shao's army was launched in Guandu. It was also one of the three famous battles in the history of the late Eastern Han Dynasty.
At the same time, the Battle of Guandu was also a battle in which the small defeated the large and the weak defeated the strong.
At that time, Yuan Shao sent his troops south to attack Xudu. When Cao Cao learned of this, he immediately led his troops to prepare for defense in the Guandu area.
After several months of confrontation, Cao Cao was at a disadvantage and even considered retreating.
However, Xun Yu encouraged Cao Cao to continue to drag Yuan Shaofang away and wait for an opportunity for a decisive battle.
Later, Xu You, one of Yuan Shao's men, surrendered to Cao Cao, allowing Cao Cao to lead a surprise attack, burning the food and grass of Yuan Shao's army and cutting off the supplies from their rear. This was the final victory.
After the Battle of Guandu, Cao Cao greatly increased his strength and truly became the overlord of one party.
It can be said that Cao Cao's achievements at this time were all due to Xun Yu's efforts. Cao Cao greatly recognized and trusted Xun Yu's resourcefulness and believed that Xun Yu's talent was as good as Zhang Liang.
It is no exaggeration to say that Xun Yu contributed most to the success of the Battle of Guandu.
But when he thought of Xun Yu's final outcome, he felt worthless for Xun Yu.
"In 201 AD, Cao Cao wanted to take advantage of Yuan Shao's defeat to attack Liu Biao."
"Xun Yu believes that now that Yuan Shao has failed and his troops are alienated, he should take advantage of this opportunity to put him down immediately."
"If we leave Yanzhou and Yuzhou, we will expedition to the Yangtze River and Hanshui River."
"If Yuan Shao takes the remnants of his troops and takes advantage of the opportunity to attack our rear, the Prime Minister's big deal will be over."
"So Cao Cao adopted Xun Yu's strategy and once again moved to the bank of the Yellow River."
"Yuan Shao died of illness. Cao Cao crossed the Yellow River and attacked Yuan Shao's sons Yuan Tan and Yuan Shang."
"In 203 AD, based on Xun Yu's contributions before and after, Cao Cao petitioned the imperial court and granted Xun Yu the title of Long Live Pavilion Marquis."
"In 207 AD, Cao Cao was preparing to attack Liu Biao and asked Xun Yu for advice."
"Xun Yu said that we can send troops to Wancheng and Yecheng openly, and secretly advance lightly from the road to attack them by surprise."
"At this moment, Liu Biao died of illness."
"Cao Cao led his army directly to Wancheng and Yecheng, and Liu Biao's son Liu Cong offered Jingzhou to surrender."
"In 212 AD, Dong Zhao and others believed that Cao Cao should be promoted to the title of Duke of the country and obtain Nine Tins."
"After Xun Yu heard about it, he thought that Cao Cao's original intention of raising the rebel army was to help the court and stabilize the country. He should be loyal and sincere and maintain the quality of humility, so he should not do this."
"Xun Yu opposed Cao Cao's move to become a Duke, which made Cao Cao dissatisfied with Xun Yu."
"It happened that Sun Quan was being conquered at this time. Cao Cao asked him to work in Qiao County and took the opportunity to keep him and let him participate in the Prime Minister's military affairs."
"After Cao Cao marched to Luxu, Xun Yu stayed in Shouchun due to illness."
"Soon he died of melancholy at the age of fifty."
Zhu Yuanzhang: Xun Yu was loyal to the Han Dynasty and died in righteousness. His heart is commendable.
At the end of the Han Dynasty, the world was in chaos, and Xun Yu could only rely on Cao Cao to help the Han Dynasty.
In his early years, Xun Yu advised Cao Cao and captured Yanzhou.
The deeds of Liu Bang, the founder of Han Dynasty, who captured Guanzhong, and Liu Xiu, Emperor Guangwu of Han Dynasty, who captured Hanoi, are compared to Cao Cao.
During the Battle of Guandu, Xun Yu advised Cao Cao not to lead his army back to Xuchang, and used the Battle of Chenggao when Chu and Han were fighting to admonish Cao Cao.
After helping Cao Cao establish his career, Xun Yu hoped to gain a reputation as loyal to the Han Dynasty.
Xun Yu assisted Cao Cao and made him strong, recommended talents, trained the army, made decisions on major events, formulated strategies, conquered all directions, and won consecutive battles.
As a result, Cao Cao was able to turn his weakness into strength and unify the north. Xun Yu's contribution was not inferior to that of Guan Zhong, a famous minister in the Spring and Autumn Period.
Xun Yu eventually died for the Han Dynasty, and his benevolence was higher than that of Guan Zhong.
To Cao Cao, Xun Yu was like Zhang Liang, the advisor to Liu Bang, the founder of the Han Dynasty.
Dong Zhao suggested that Cao Cao accept Jiuxi and become Duke of Wei, but Xun Yu dissuaded him.
Cao Cao was so dissatisfied that Xun Yu died, which is a pity.
Xun Yu assisted Cao Cao in pacifying the Central Plains, annihilating the heroes, and becoming an emperor.
Everyone inside and outside the imperial court believed that the world already belonged to Cao Cao. Although he did not add Jiuxi, Cao Cao still controlled the world.
What Xun Yu meant was that he hoped that Cao Cao could wait for the day when the world would return to his heart, and then he would be promoted to a noble king.
In order to avoid being cast aside by the people of the world and ruining your reputation for taking things by force.
Unfortunately, Cao Cao was determined to win and was unwilling to wait for several years.
"As Cao Cao's chief adviser and hero in unifying the north, Xun Yu stayed in the middle and handled military affairs for more than ten years."
"He has made many achievements in building plans, plotting, building walls, and raising people. He is called my son-in-law by Cao Cao."
"As for Xun Yu's death, the records of the Three Kingdoms and the Later Han Dynasty, which are both official histories, are different."
"The Chronicle of the Three Kingdoms records that Xun Yu was neglected by Cao Cao and eventually died of depression,"
"Then the Book of the Later Han Dynasty records that Cao Cao sent food to Xun Yu. Xun Yu opened the food container and found that there was nothing in it. After understanding Cao Cao's intention, he drank poison and committed suicide."
"As for Xun Yu's identity and position, the Chronicle of the Three Kingdoms lists Xun Yu, Xun You, and Jia Xu together, ranking first among the Wei officials other than the Cao family and the Xiahou family."
"Then in the Later Han Dynasty, Xun Yu was biographed alongside Zheng Tai and Kong Rong, and he was regarded as a Han official."
"Xun Yu also became the only person among the three separate forces of Wei, Shu and Wu to have a biography in this book."
"On this point, later generations of scholars also hold different opinions."
"Some people think that Xun Yu was loyal to the Han Dynasty. From welcoming Emperor Xian of the Han Dynasty back to Xu County, so that the emperor could be protected, to later disagreeing with Cao Cao's claim to the throne, he showed his loyalty to the Han Dynasty."
"Some people think that he has been advising Cao Cao his whole life and is Cao Cao's adviser."
"Whether Xun Yu was a Han official or a Wei official, he was an outstanding politician and strategist."
Zhang Juzheng: He was in Cao Cao's camp and his heart was in the Han Dynasty. Perhaps Xun Yu was doomed to his tragic fate from the moment he surrendered to Cao Cao.
From a rational perspective, Xun Yu clearly realized that the Han Dynasty could not do anything.
So he supported Cao Cao's great cause of rebuilding the world and established great achievements.
But at the same time, there was a disconnected emotional connection between Xun Yu and the old dynasty.
The shadow of feudal ethics and common ethics has always shrouded Xun Yu's heart, making it difficult for him to break free.
However, although Xun Yu had some contradictions, looking at Xun Yu's life, there were three main aspects of personal achievements.
One is to assist Cao Cao in unifying the north.
Xun Yu made suggestions for Cao Cao. He first pacified Xuzhou, Wancheng, and Huainan, and eliminated Lu Bu, Zhang Xiu, Yuan Shu, etc. to stabilize Yanzhou's rear.
Then he sent troops to fight with Yuan Shao and gradually unified the north.
Cao Cao and Yuan Shao were at a stalemate in Guandu and planned to retreat.
Xun Yu tried his best to persuade and finally won the battle of Guandu.
Finally, Yuan Shao was eliminated and Hebei was captured.
Second, he advised Cao Cao to welcome Emperor Xian of the Han Dynasty and move the capital to Xuchang.
Before Cao Cao welcomed Emperor Xian of the Han Dynasty, Sun Ce of Jiangdong and Yuan Shao of Hebei both planned to welcome Emperor Xian of the Han Dynasty.
Xun Yu advised Cao Cao to act quickly and welcome Emperor Xian of Han from Luoyang to Xuchang.
In fact, he controlled the central power, gained absolute political advantage over other separatist warlords, and was able to coerce the emperor and order the princes.
The third is to strongly recommend northern scholars to Cao Cao.
After Xun Yu switched to Cao Cao from Yuan Shao, he successively recommended Xun You, Xi Zhicai, Guo Jia and others.
All of these talents were reused by Cao Cao, and they each did their best to play a role in Cao Cao's unification of the north.
