There is a Shen Garden in Shaoxing, Zhejiang.

Legend has it that two verses of "The Phoenix at the Hairpin" were written on the wall of Shen Garden in the past.

It is said that the first stanza was written by the famous poet Lu You, and the second stanza was written by Lu You's ex-wife Tang Wan.

These two poems were written by different people, but they express the same sadness, helplessness and pain.

This is a sad love story about two protagonists who look at each other in silence and then use poetry to express their feelings.

Tang Wan loved, hated, and felt pain in her life, although she died for love in the end.

But she is worthy of this life, she is happy in this life.

In fact, true love can be encountered but not sought.

Because life is too short.

So, meet someone you truly love.

Never let the other person down, and don't lament after losing him/her!

"Lu You, who failed the exam due to Qin Hui's interference, came to Shen Garden with his family to enjoy the scenery to relieve his depression and frustration."

"I have seen the lush greenery of Shen Garden and admired the pavilions and towers in the garden."

"A graceful and charming figure appeared in Lu You's mind amidst the small bridge and flowing water."

"Inspired by this, he wrote a poem on the inscription wall."

"Spring is the same as before, but I am thinner and thinner, with red and soft tear marks, and the silk is transparent."

"Peach blossoms fall, the pool pavilion is idle."

"Although the oath is still there, it is hard to entrust a letter to someone."

"Mo, Mo, Mo!"

"Before the handwriting of his love poem, "Love is always in vain in the cool evening," had dried, it caught someone's attention."

"With tears in his eyes, this person finished reading Lu You's heartfelt poem."

"She rolled up her red sleeves and used her delicate hands to write poems behind Lu You's lyrics. This person was Lu You's ex-wife Tang Wan."

"The world is cruel and people are evil. The rain brings the evening and the flowers fall easily."

"The morning breeze dries up the tears."

"I want to write down my thoughts, and I speak to myself alone."

"Difficult, difficult, difficult!"

"I would like to be a winged bird in the sky, and a twig on the ground."

"The beautiful vision in this poem is just the beauty in Lu You and Tang Wan's dream."

“Even if the past is like yesterday’s flower, it is but a passing moment in the mist.”

"We say goodbye with the same feelings, but we are still strangers with tears in our eyes."

"At this time, Lu You was already thirty years old, and he was accompanied by his lovely son and virtuous wife."

"Standing beside Tang Wan were her husband and her two young children who had always loved and cared for her."

"On a night with bright moon and sparse stars, and the spring breeze blowing on my face."

"Tang Wan cast an earnest look at her husband Zhao Shicheng, who was beside her, and Zhao Shicheng nodded to her lovingly."

"Tang Wan raised her glass to Lu You and drank it all. Lu You then slowly poured the bitter wine filled with regret and sadness into his own stomach."

"This glass of wine is a remembrance of the harmonious relationship we had ten years ago, and also a tribute to those unbearable years."

"At this moment, the two of them seemed to be making the final decision about their past, and it was also the last time they met in their long journey of life."

Li Shishi: Lu You and Tang Wan wrote a love story that will last forever, but Tang Wan's husband could only stay alone in the empty room and silently pour out his heart.

Tang Wan was Lu You’s first wife and the person he loved most in his life.

However, she was separated from her husband because of her mother-in-law's opposition and later remarried Zhao Shicheng, a relative of the Song clan.

Zhao Shicheng was originally unknown, but became known to the world because of the love story of Lu You and Tang Wan.

He was a descendant of Emperor Taizong of Song, and lived a well-off life with a worry-free future.

After marrying Tang Wan, he was deeply in love with her. After his beloved wife passed away, he never remarried, which made people sigh.

Facing her two husbands, Tang Wan chose to love in different ways.

Tang Wan and Lu You were childhood sweethearts. Tang Wan married the 20-year-old Lu You when she was young.

The two not only have similar interests, but also similar talents.

It is a rare situation where two people love each other, understand each other, and their love is direct and passionate.

But for Tang Wan, Zhao Shicheng is the most real life.

A woman who was divorced by her husband's family was already helpless, and it was very difficult for her to marry Zhao Shicheng as a second wife, not to mention that there was an insurmountable gap between their status.

When Tang Wan faced Zhao Shicheng, what she saw was an arm, a support, and a love of mutual support.

So she gave birth to children for Zhao Shicheng, but was heartbroken for Lu You.

Two husbands, one loved but couldn't get him, the other loved him and loved everyone in his family.

The most direct reason why Lu You's mother broke up the couple was so that he could focus on pursuing fame and fortune and be less sentimental.

Lu You's family was originally a prominent family, but they fell into poverty due to war.

He experienced ups and downs throughout his career as an official, his ambitions were not realized, and he could not stay with his beloved woman.

One is the pain of missing someone, the other is unfulfilled ambitions.

Unlike Lu You, Zhao Shicheng married Tang Wan as his second wife, but he loved her deeply.

He is a member of the Zhao clan, has a bright future, comes from a wealthy family, and takes good care of Tang Wan.

When visiting Shen Garden, Lu You was excluded by Qin Hui and was unable to serve as an official in the court.

Lu You was feeling lonely, while Tang Wan and her husband were having a banquet in Shen Garden.

When Lu You saw his first wife and her current husband drinking and appreciating the garden together, he must have felt a huge disappointment.

So after drinking the wine handed to him by Tang Wan, he was filled with grief and anger, and began to write down the pain of memories and the loneliness and emptiness.

On the other hand, Zhao Shicheng was drinking and enjoying the scenery with his beloved wife when Lu You suddenly appeared and interrupted their elegance.

He knew that Tang Wan still loved Lu You, but he still agreed to let Tang Wan meet him. This shows Zhao Shicheng's open-minded and confident qualities.

He had been married to Tang Wan for nearly ten years, so he must have known more or less about her story with Lu You.

Not only was he not jealous, but he also facilitated the meeting between the two, showing that he really loved Tang Wan to the extent of loving her so much that he loved everyone in her.

Lu You's family influenced his love life, and his mother also wanted him to revive the Lu family.

But sadly, Lu You failed to achieve both love and career in the end.

Let’s look at Zhao Shicheng again. Tang Wan died of depression due to the pain of missing her, but he actually refused to remarry.

He could and should have remarried, after all, Tang Wan was his second wife.

But because of love, he chose to stay alone with her.

When her lover is alive, she accompanies and cares for her; when she is sad, she understands and comforts her; when her lover passes away, she is with her through life and death. For Tang Wan, what else could she not be satisfied with?

One love is heart-wrenching, the other love is warm and solid.

Tang Wan has experienced the two most extreme expressions of love in the world, so what regrets does she have?

Especially since she died at the age of 28, she left her best side to these two men forever.

Although cruel, they are still two beautiful love stories that have been passed down for thousands of years.

"Tang Wan is Lu You's cousin, and the two childhood sweethearts have built up a deep emotional foundation since they were young."

"By the time Lu You was 20, 15-year-old Tang Wan was no longer the chattering little girl."

"Tang Wan, who was in her teens, was not only beautiful but also talented. At a young age, she was already a well-known talent in the local area."

"This young boy and girl, who were both young and ignorant, also entered the marriage hall with the blessing of their family."

"After marriage, Lu You and Tang Wan lived a life of mutual affection and dependence."

"However, as they were enjoying the sweetness of their newlywed life, an inexplicable crisis was approaching them."

"Lu You, who was in love for the first time, put too much thought on Tang Wan, and Tang Wan's gentle care also made their love fall into the land of tenderness."

"If the two loves last for a long time, how can they be in the morning and evening?"

"Lu You and Tang Wan's newlywed life was seen by Lu's mother."

"When they frequently showed their affection in front of Lu's mother, it also completely angered Lu's mother, who wanted her son to be successful."

"She felt that Lu You should not be so lost in the whirlpool of love that he forgot his ambition to rule his family and his country."

"She blamed Tang Wan for Lu You's neglect of books."

"When Lu's mother met a fortune teller, she gave the birth dates of Lu You and Tang Wan to the fortune teller, using the words of a charlatan to determine her son's future."

"The fortune teller said that Tang Wan was Lu You's nemesis and was likely to cause Lu You's death."

"This statement completely broke the bottom line of what Mother Lu could bear. She wanted to expel Tang Wan from the Lu family."

"After more than a year of marriage, Lu's mother asked Lu You to divorce Tang Wan on the pretext that Tang Wan was infertile."

"Lu You, who was extremely filial to his mother, seemed somewhat at a loss as to what to do under her constant pressure."

"Without any other options, he bought a new house outside and secretly settled Tang Wan there."

"However, there is no paper that can cover fire, and this action was eventually discovered by Lu's mother."

"Lu You was at his wits' end and could only send Tang Wan back to her parents' home, filled with guilt and reluctance."

"Lu You married another woman under his mother's arrangement to carry on the Lu family's bloodline."

Liu Rushi: Tang Wan married Lu You at the age of fifteen, but was divorced because their relationship was too good. She died of depression after they met again in Shen Garden.

Tang Wan was three years younger than Lu You, and was beautiful and intelligent.

What is rare is that in a social atmosphere where women are considered virtuous even if they are not talented.

Tang Wan was a talented poet and writer. After Lu You failed the imperial examination for the first time, he went to visit his uncle's family.

Of course, the most important thing was that he wanted to meet Tang Wan.

After the two met, Lu You was attracted by the graceful and beautiful Tang Wan.

The Lu and Tang families naturally understood that the two children were childhood sweethearts and had feelings for each other, but since Lu You had not yet passed the imperial examination, they were hesitant.

But soon, the Lu family and the Tang family agreed.

After all, Lu You was only 19 years old and had already passed the imperial examination.

With Lu You's talent, it should only be a matter of time before he passed the imperial examination.

After all, under normal circumstances, most people have to study hard for many years until they are in their forties or fifties before they can pass the imperial examination.

Therefore, the Lu family made a marriage contract with the Tang family with an exquisite family heirloom phoenix hairpin as a token of trust.

Soon, the parents of both sides picked an auspicious day.

Amidst the joyous atmosphere, Lu You rode on a tall horse and solemnly married Tang Wan.

As newlyweds, the young couple were very affectionate and talked about poetry and lyrics.

Common interests and hobbies deepened their appreciation and respect for each other.

Tang Wan's gentleness and thoughtfulness made Lu You feel sweetness and happiness.

Once, Tang Wan accidentally heard that dried chrysanthemums can clear away heat and refresh the mind.

She immediately picked chrysanthemums with her own hands, dried them carefully, and sewed an exquisite chrysanthemum pillow for Lu You.

Tang Wan was worried that Lu You was too tired from studying, so she often cooked for him and made lotus seed soup that would refresh him.

Those were one of the few sweet and happy times in Lu You's life.

Lu You and Tang Wan exchanged poems and essays, and lived a harmonious life together. They were envied by their fellow writers, but this greatly annoyed Lu's mother.

Lu's mother believed that her son should take the imperial examination to seek fame and fortune. How could he linger among women, indulge in reciting poems and composing couplets, and not make progress?

Lu's mother's attitude towards Tang Wan also changed from love and admiration to resentment and dissatisfaction.

Tang Wan observed the expressions on her face and tried to strictly demand herself according to the standards of a good daughter-in-law, and served her mother-in-law more respectfully.

She gets up at the first crow of the rooster every day, quickly gets herself ready and cleans the yard.

It never stopped, regardless of severe cold or heat, for fear of upsetting her mother-in-law.

Lu You saw this and thought his mother would be somewhat sympathetic.

But he obviously overestimated his mother's feelings for Tang Wan and underestimated his parents' expectations of him.

What's more, something happened later, which became the last straw that broke the camel's back for Lu's mother's extreme disgust with Tang Wan.

Lu's mother went to Longhua Temple to pray to the gods and ask about her youngest son's future.

She was in a trance and even forgot to pay the incense money.

When she was leaving the temple gate, the monk who received her was very unhappy and said without thinking that unless her son divorced his wife, his life would be in danger!

Mother Lu was shocked and believed it to be true. She staggered back home with the help of the maid.

Lu's mother demanded in a cold and stern tone that Lu You must divorce his wife and write a letter of divorce to Tang Wan.

There were two main charges for the divorce: one was that the couple were too affectionate, and the other was that Tang Wan had no children.

Lu You was shocked as if he had heard a bolt from the blue. He tried to refuse in every possible way and begged his mother desperately.

But Lu's mother was not moved at all, and even threatened to commit suicide.

Upon hearing this, Lu You collapsed to the ground.

In desperation, he endured the severe pain in his heart and wrote a letter of divorce with tears streaming down his face.

"The resentful Tang family found a new home for Tang Wan and married her to Zhao Shicheng, a local man whose talent was as great as Lu You."

"Lu You and Tang Wan's love for each other gradually hid in the deepest part of their hearts, leaving it to be ravaged by time and baptized by the years."

"When Lu You, who was frustrated in his career, came to Shen Garden to comfort himself, he recalled the scene when he and Tang Wan visited Shen Garden together ten years ago."

"Tang Wan's voice, appearance and smile were as vivid as yesterday. Reminiscing about the past, Lu You wrote the heartfelt "Phoenix Hairpin" in Shen Garden."

"Maybe it's fate or destiny."

"Lu You's poem happened to be seen by Tang Wan who came to enjoy the scenery with them, and thus the two families had a meal together under the moon, and Tang Wan toasted with wine."

"I want to know you and live a long life without end."

"When the winter thunders and the summer snows, the heaven and earth will unite, and then I will dare to break up with you."

"After meeting again in Shen Garden, it seems that the knot that had been hidden in Tang Wan's heart for ten years has been untied. Perhaps this is love."

"It was only then that Tang Wan realized that even after ten years, Lu You still loved her deeply."

"Not long after returning home, Tang Wan left this earthly world where she had experienced pain, love, and sorrow, with sadness, regret, and bitterness."

"Even if the sea turns into mulberry fields, Lu You's love for Tang Wan seems to have never changed, just like the vows they made when they were young."

"Many years after Tang Wan's death, Lu You once again visited Shen Garden, which held their stories, and he still wrote poems in remembrance of Tang Wan."

"Until Lu You was already an octogenarian, over 80 years old."

"His original intention of missing and loving Tang Wan has never changed."

"In the last moments of his life, he wrote poems for Tang Wan."

"I also believe that beauties will eventually turn to dust, and I cannot bear the fleeting dream."

Li Qingzhao: Lu You's poem "The Golden Hairpin" ruined Zhao Shicheng's happiness and killed Tang Wan's life.

Lu You and Tang Wan were separated as a couple, how could they just let it go?

So Lu You secretly placed Tang Wan in a remote courtyard outside.

Without telling his mother, he continued to meet with Tang Wan secretly.

However, Lu's mother was not easy to fool.

She sent servants to follow her son many times, and even followed him herself.

A few days later, he finally found the new home his son had bought for Tang Wan.

Mother Lu pointed at Tang Wan and scolded her angrily.

She also sternly ordered the servants to smash and throw away everything in the courtyard, and immediately sent someone to send Tang Wan back to her parents' home.

Lu You nodded in agreement, but in the end he did not dare to let his mother down. He watched Tang Wan crying bitterly and walked away from her.

After Tang Wan left, Lu You was distraught and lost his appetite.

He stared at a pot of red begonia given to him by Tang Wan all day long, and named the flower "Acacia Red".

Mother Lu believed that the best way for her son to completely forget Tang Wan was to start a new relationship.

Soon, under the arrangement of Lu's mother, Lu You remarried and married Wang.

Lu You finally recovered from his love failure according to his mother's wishes.

He and Wang treated each other with respect, and he immersed himself in studying scriptures again to prepare for the imperial examination.

When the news of Lu You's remarriage reached the Tang family, Tang Wan was heartbroken. Tang Wan's parents were even more angry at their sister's cruelty and their nephew Lu You's indifference.

Soon, Tang Wan's parents asked someone to arrange a marriage for their daughter, and Tang Wan married Zhao Shicheng, a descendant of the royal family.

Zhao Shicheng felt very sorry for Tang Wan's situation, and turned this pity into deep love and respect for her.

Tang Wan was also touched by Zhao Shicheng's consideration and care, and she tried hard to adapt to her new role in life.

Lu You and Tang Wan were originally going to part ways and each pursue their own paths in life.

However, the cruel fate made them meet again.

Lu You went to Shen Garden alone to relax. It was spring, the sun was shining, and the water was gurgling.

Lu You stood on the small bridge, looking at the cluster of red crabapple flowers blooming under the bridge.

He couldn't help but think of the Acacia Red that Tang Wan gave him, and the past between him and Tang Wan.

At this time, Zhao Shicheng and Tang Wan and their spouses happened to be visiting Shen Garden, and the three of them met unexpectedly.

Neither Lu You nor Tang Wan expected that they would meet here by chance six years after their breakup.

The moment their eyes met, they had a thousand words to say but didn't know where to start.

Zhao Shicheng felt mixed emotions as he looked at Lu You's distraught look and Tang Wan's tears in grief.

This open-minded and enlightened gentleman ordered his servants to do it in the name of his wife Tang Wan.

He sent wine and food to Lu You, and talked about their meeting as a stranger and their past friendship.

But as Lu You ate the wine and food that were sent to him, thousands of past events came to his mind.

When he was half drunk, he was inspired to write "The Phoenix Hairpin" on the wall.

Many years later, when Tang Wan was seriously ill, she came to Shen Garden again.

In writing the second half of "The Golden Hairpin", the young woman completed this tragic love song with her life.

Tang Wan's death dealt a heavy blow to Lu You's heart.

It also made Lu You feel more guilty and missed his mother, but Lu You was not a pessimistic or self-pitying person.

He turned his longing for Tang Wan into the fragrance of plum blossoms and the warm memories of Shen Garden, which warmed his long life thereafter.

When Lu You was 63 years old, it had been more than 30 years since Tang Wan passed away.

He thought of the chrysanthemum pillowcase Tang Wan gave him when he was young, and still sighed that all things in the world have faded away, and only the fragrance remains like the old days.

When Lu You was 75 years old, he revisited Shen Garden and wrote with tears: "The dream is broken and the fragrance is gone for forty years, the willows in Shen Garden are old and the catkins are not flying."

When he was 81 years old, he visited Shen Garden in his dream and wrote: Spring has come to the small alley in the south of the city, but I can only see plum blossoms but no people.

In the spring of his 84th year, Lu You seemed to sense that his end was near.

He visited Shen Garden again and wrote down the poem believing that beauty will eventually turn into dust, and he could not bear the fleeting dream.

Only then did he believe that Tang Wan had really passed away and turned into a pile of yellow earth. (End of this chapter)
