Chapter 496: Lu Zhaolin, the Four Great Men of the Early Tang Dynasty

In the first year of Wu Zetian's Yongchang reign, Lu Zhaolin, who was in deep despair, packed up all the manuscripts he had written throughout his life.

Then he bid farewell to his relatives and friends in tears, and on a dark and windy night, he jumped into the Ying River and committed suicide.

Freed himself from the miserable rest of his life filled with illness and mental torture.

"Lu Zhaolin's Fanyang Lu family has been extremely prominent since the Eastern Han Dynasty. They have produced many outstanding figures and have frequent contacts with the royal family. Their ancestors even produced three princesses."

"When other children were still climbing trees to rob bird nests and fishing in rivers, Lu Zhaolin was sent by his family to study in the south of the Yangtze River, where he listened to literary masters teach "San Cang", "Er Ya" and classics and history books."

"Lu Zhaolin has been very smart since childhood. Under the guidance of a famous teacher, he has become a brilliant scholar in just a few years. He is definitely a top student."

"At the age of 20, the handsome young man Lu Zhaolin came to Chang'an with his family's expectations."

"With his talent, he quickly entered the aristocratic circle of the capital and became a guest of honor for celebrities in Kyoto."

"Prince Deng Li Yuanyu admired him very much. He was the seventeenth son of Emperor Gaozu of Tang, Li Yuan, and the uncle of the current Emperor Gaozong of Tang, Li Zhi."

"With the support of Prince Deng, Lu Zhaolin served as a secretary in the palace of Prince Deng."

"There was a rich collection of books in the Deng Palace, and Lu was able to read widely in his spare time, and his literary attainments improved day by day."

"In the following years, Lu Zhaolin followed King Deng to the border areas, moved to Shouzhou, Xiangzhou, Yanzhou and other places, and was sent as an envoy to Yizhou and Ganliang."

"Lu Zhaolin was enjoying a happy life during this period, and his poems and essays also showed his high spirits."

"While accompanying King Deng on his mission to the border, Lu Zhaolin wrote a series of frontier poems with great momentum."

"Lu Zhaolin was grateful for the recognition from King Deng, and he compared himself to a hero in "Liu Sheng"."

"At this time, Lu Zhaolin, holding a sword and carrying a righteous spirit, was ready to fight, and for the sake of gratitude, he was willing to die even if it meant death."

"In 665 AD, King Deng died of illness, and Lu Zhaolin was appointed as the new commander of Yizhou."

"After his term of office was over, Lu roamed around Shu, explored mountains and rivers, visited ancient sites, and left behind a large number of travel poems and historical poems."

"During this period, he became friends with Wang Bo, and together they went to Xuanwu Mountain to recite poems and sing songs together."

"In his Ode to History (Part 1) he compared himself to Ji Bu."

"Ji Bu was once a soldier under Xiang Yu. After Xiang Yu was defeated and died, Liu Bang offered a reward for Ji Bu's arrest."

"Thanks to Xiahou Ying's intercession, Ji Bu was pardoned by Liu Bang and appointed as a doctor, and later as a general of the imperial court. During the reign of Emperor Wen of Han, he was promoted to governor of Hedong County."

"Although he was in the countryside, he was still in the imperial court. Lu Zhaolin longed to be reused like Ji Bu and realize his ambitions."

"Like Wang Bo, he was a young talent, but he had a high reputation but a low position. He had no stage to display his talent, and he was depressed and could not express himself."

"Lu Zhaolin, who wanted to save the world and realize his ambitions, left Shu and returned to Chang'an."

"He used his rough yet mellow voice to sing the eternally famous poem 'Ancient Style of Chang'an'."

Su Shi: Lu Zhaolin is known in history as one of the Four Great Talents of the Early Tang Dynasty. His most famous poem is "Ancient Style of Chang'an". He was from Fanyang, Youzhou, and called himself Youyouzi.

He was born into a prominent family in Hebei and was placed with high hopes since childhood.

When other children were still robbing bird nests and fishing, his family had already hired famous teachers for him and he was well-read in poetry and books.

Lu Zhaolin passed the imperial examination at the age of 18 and was favored by Tang Taizong's younger brother, Li Yuanyu, the Prince of Deng, who appointed him as a literary official in the palace.

The palace had a large collection of books. Lu Zhaolin read poetry and books in the library and wrote many good poems.

The beginning is so perfect, but few people know that the Tang Dynasty regulations stipulated that one could not serve as an official in the royal palace for more than four years.

There was no choice, so after Lu Zhaolin finished his term in the palace, he went to Chengdu Xinduqiao to serve as the new commander.

This position is far inferior to that in the royal palace. If you pass the imperial examination, you can at most be appointed as an official of the eighth or ninth rank.

In the Tang Dynasty, if one wanted to rise to prominence, one had to rely not only on one's talent but also on one's father and background.

Famous people like Li Bai, Wang Wei and Du Fu also had to follow the trend at that time and diligently send poems and articles to high-ranking officials.

Wang Wei later passed the imperial examination by following the princess route of Prince Qi Li Fan.

By this time, King Deng had died of illness, and no one could help Lu Zhaolin.

Therefore, after completing his term as the new commander, he did not leave Chengdu.

He traveled around the mountains and rivers of Bashu with Wang Bo, enjoyed delicious food, and partied with beautiful women every night.

When he returned to Luoyang, the prosperity he saw inspired him to write the long poem "The Ancient Spirit of Chang'an".

Among them, "Why would I refuse to die if I could become a pair of mandarin ducks? I would rather be a mandarin duck than be an immortal" is the most popular one.

Who knows that this poem is the reason for success or failure?

One day, Lu Zhaolin was staying at home leisurely when a group of people suddenly came and threw him into jail without any explanation.

The relatives looked everywhere for people to salvage the items but to no avail. After careful inquiry, they found out that they were a few lines from Lu Zhaolin's "Ancient Style of Chang'an".

This was considered a mockery by Wu Zetian's younger brother Wu Sansi, who was the King of Liang at the time.

After several interrogations, Lu Zhaolin was finally released.

Perhaps this imprisonment was a great shock to him and he was released not long ago.

Lu Zhaolin contracted leprosy and became paralyzed on one side of his body, and his life fell into a slump from then on.

Because of his illness, he could no longer be an official. Even if he was a ninth-rank official, without a position he would have no salary, and he also had to pay for medical treatment. One can imagine his embarrassment.

Illness leads to poverty, both in ancient and modern times.

In order to cure his illness, Lu Zhaolin wrote letters to all his relatives and friends for help.

The talented man who was once full of vigor and vitality has fallen to such a state. He feels sad but helpless.

As the saying goes, when one is seriously ill, one should seek medical help from anywhere. What made Lu Zhaolin's situation even worse was that he listened to others and accidentally ingested a medicinal elixir, which resulted in poisoning.

His facial features became dislocated and deformed, his face became hideous, and his condition became even worse. Lu Zhaolin was in excruciating pain.

"Chang'an is the paradise of the upper class."

"The Chang'an Avenue is connected with narrow streets, and there are seven fragrant carriages with green oxen, white horses and seven fragrant carriages."

"Jade chariots passed across the main hall, and golden whips came to the Hou family."

"The dragon holds the treasure in its head to carry the morning sun, and the phoenix spits out its tassels to carry the sunset."

"A hundred-foot long silk thread entwines the tree, and a flock of delicate birds sings to the flowers."

"Bees and butterflies flutter around the gates, green trees and silver platforms are in myriad colors."

"The double corridors and windows intersect to create a jubilant atmosphere, and the double pavilions and connected eaves are like phoenix wings."

"The Liang family's painted pavilion rises to the sky, and the Han emperor's golden stem rises straight beyond the clouds."

"We looked at each other in front of the building but didn't know each other, how could we recognize each other when we met on the road?"

"May I ask if you are playing the flute towards the purple smoke? I once learned to dance in my youth."

"How can I die if I have achieved success? I would like to be a mandarin duck and not envy the immortals."

"How enviable are the mandarin ducks, they come and go in pairs, don't you see?"

"I hate the solitary phoenix embroidered on the curtains, I prefer the twin swallows embroidered on the door curtains."

"Two swallows fly around the painted beams, and the silk curtains are covered with tulips."

"Pieces of moving clouds adorn the temples of cicadas, and the slender new moon is as yellow as crows."

"She came out of the carriage in yellow, pink and white, with a charming and charming look and a variety of emotions."

"The demon boy rides a BMW with iron and money, and the prostitute kneels down with a golden dragon."

"He describes the lives of the wealthy aristocrats in Chang'an competing for luxury and pursuing pleasure."

"In the Censor's House the crows are crying at night, and in front of the Court Judge's door the sparrows are trying to roost."

"The red city looms over the jade road, and the green curtains cover the golden embankment."

"The eagle with a bullet in hand flew north of Duling, and the guest with a bullet in hand borrowed a ball west of Weiqiao."

"We all invite the knight-errant with the lotus sword to stay at the prostitute's peach and plum garden together."

"At dusk, the prostitute wears a purple silk skirt, and sings a song with a misty scent on her mouth."

"People in the north hall are like the moon every night, and riders in the south road are like clouds every morning."

"Nanmo and Beitang are connected to Beili, and five dramas and three streets control three markets."

"The willows and green locust trees are drooping to the ground, and the good air of the world rises from the dark sky."

"A thousand Han Dynasty Jinwu riders came with a jade Tusu parrot cup."

"I untied my silk robe and precious belt for you, and sang songs from Yan and danced for you." "He described Chang'an as a place of fame and fortune where material desires run rampant, with trembling in madness and spirituality in decadence."

"There is no other grand title than generals and ministers, who will not yield to the tide of the day."

"The reason for his arrogance is to exclude Guan Fu, and his power is to disallow Xiao Xiang."

"The ambition to monopolize power is inherently heroic, and the green dragon and purple swallow sit in the spring breeze."

"He claims that his singing and dancing have been passed down for thousands of years, and that he is more arrogant and extravagant than the five dukes."

"The beauty of the seasons changes, and the mulberry fields and blue seas change in an instant."

"In the past, there were golden steps and white jade halls, but now only green pines remain."

"Here, the upper class is chasing fame and fortune, and the civil and military officials are fighting against each other."

Xin Qiji: The four great poets of the early Tang Dynasty, Wang Bo, Yang Jiong, Lu Zhaolin and Luo Binwang, were all gifted and famous for their literary talents. They were the pride of the literary world in the early Tang Dynasty.

However, the four people are well-versed in classics.

But they all had unfortunate fates, bumpy careers, and unfulfilled ambitions, and ultimately they all did not live past the age of fifty.

What is most regrettable is that almost all of them died in accidents.

Lu Zhaolin committed suicide by jumping into the Ying River because he could not bear the pain of illness. Luo Binwang fell into the water and died after his defeat in the Tuowu campaign. Wang Bo also died of shock from drowning.

Even Yang Jiong, who had a relatively smooth life, had a confusing cause of death, with various rumors surrounding it.

Among the four heroes, Lu Zhaolin's death is particularly heartbreaking. His tragic life experience makes people see what is the unbearable pain in life.

Lu Zhaolin came from a prominent family, the Fanyang Lu clan. His family was a large clan comparable to Wang Bo's Longmen Wang clan, the Tang royal family's Longxi Li clan and other large clans.

Therefore, Lu Zhaolin received a good education since he was a child. He successively studied under the famous scholars Cao Xian and Wang Yifang, and learned classics, history, poetry and prose. He was knowledgeable and talented in writing, and was famous in his hometown.

At the age of 18, Lu Zhaolin entered the palace of Prince Deng Li Yuanyu as a secretary, reviewing official documents on behalf of the princes and was highly regarded by Prince Deng.

Lu Zhaolin once worshipped the King of Medicine Sun Simiao as his teacher, hoping to cure his illness. Sun Simiao also admired his talent because he liked his poems and essays.

In addition to helping him treat his illness, I also encouraged him and provided him with psychological counseling.

Under Sun Simiao's care, Lu Zhaolin's condition improved slightly.

But unfortunately, not long after, Sun Simiao was ordered to enter the palace to treat Emperor Gaozong, and Lu Zhaolin no longer had even this little support.

Lu Zhaolin endured endless physical pain every day and was just trying to get by.

During this period, his younger brother and father passed away one after another, and Lu Zhaolin once again fell into endless despair.

Soon, Lu Zhaolin used the money donated by his friends to buy a farm at the foot of Juci Mountain and next to Ying River, and built a tomb for himself.

Every day I feel like a living dead, lying there, barely gasping for breath, and no longer seeing any hope at all.

Finally, when he was 44 years old, Lu Zhaolin wrote "Three Songs of Shi Illness" to bid farewell to his relatives and friends.

Then he dragged his sick body to the bank of Yingshui River and jumped into the river to commit suicide.

It was a good start, and I thought there would be more glory later.

Little did he know that he would be plagued by illness and hardships in the second half of his life, and his once lofty ambitions had been broken and could not be realized.

Without a healthy body, no matter how high your ambitions are, you cannot fly.

I have to say that Lu Zhaolin is the most miserable and unlucky person.

However, his poems and essays are vast and free-flowing.

"Ancient Style of Chang'an" depicts the prosperity of ancient Chang'an vividly and brilliantly, and is even regarded as a representative work of the Tang Dynasty song style.

In fact, good health and freedom from illness and disaster are the greatest blessings!
"There is a lot of excitement on Chang'an Street, but in Zhongnan Mountain, there is only the quiet and lonely Yangziju."

"On Chang'an Street, people indulge themselves in lust and rely on power, but in Zhongnan Mountain, people are pure-hearted and abstain from lust, spending years on a bed of books."

"The fame on Chang'an Street will eventually be wiped out, but the fame in Zhongnan Mountain will last forever."

"Only the sweet-scented osmanthus flowers of Nanshan are in bloom, flying back and forth and brushing against people's skirts."

"Once this poem was published, people in Chang'an competed to sing it."

"If we can be a pair of mandarin ducks, we would rather die than be immortals." This has become a classic love quote that has been sung by later generations.

"But one person was unhappy because he thought it was a satire on him."

"Feeling that he was being implicated, Wu Sansi became angry and sent people to list charges against him, and Lu Zhaolin was wrongly imprisoned."

"After many efforts by his family, the man was rescued, but he suffered from a stroke."

"From then on, there was no hope for his official career, and Lu Zhaolin sighed deeply in "The Difficulty of Traveling"."

"No one cares about the day it falls, but how can you know the eternal destruction?"

"Life has no beginning or end, and it is fleeting and cannot be relied upon for long."

"Who can stop the sun in the west mountain? Who can dam the water flowing in the east?"

"The Han Dynasty tombs are all over Qinchuan, and people walking around are filled with pity."

"After a while, Lu Zhaolin found that his legs began to become numb and he could not move them."

"A few months later, he became a bedridden invalid, and his once handsome appearance was completely distorted."

"Later, I was fortunate enough to learn medical skills from the Medicine King Sun Simiao, but I was able to barely save my life."

"Lu Zhaolin, who had no hope of recovery, bought dozens of acres of land at the foot of Mount Juci, diverted the Ying River to surround his house, and built a tomb for himself in advance."

"Lu Zhaolin spent every day in agony, with nowhere to vent his grief, so he wrote the Five Sorrows in one breath."

"Sadness of Talent, Sadness of Poverty and Wealth, Sadness of Past Travels, Sadness of Today, Sadness of Life, every word is sobbing and every word is tearful."

"The long-term pain and suffering made Lu Zhaolin lose the will to live. After writing his last poem "Explanation of Illness", he resolutely jumped into the Ying River, ending his short life."

Li Qingzhao: Lu Zhaolin's tragic life makes people sigh at the cruelty of fate and deeply reflect on the meaning of life.

During the Tang Dynasty, the imperial court had regulations that court officials could not serve in the royal palace for a long time and needed to be rotated regularly in order to check and balance the kings and prevent officials from colluding with princes.

After leaving Deng Wangfu, Lu Zhaolin went to Xindu, Sichuan, and became a county lieutenant in charge of public security.

During this period, Lu Zhaolin met another genius of the time, Wang Bo.

The two traveled hand in hand, from Xuanwu Mountain to Qushui in Chengdu, walking together and singing along the way, leaving behind many magnificent poems.

It was the year of the imperial examination, and the two encouraged each other to go to the capital together to take the exam and realize their ideals and ambitions.

Four great talents gathered in the capital, but the result of the examination was not ideal.

It is said that the examiner Pei Xingjian did not like their early fame and thought that the four heroes were not capable of taking on the responsibility.

Pei Xingjian was a famous official during Emperor Gaozong's reign. He was said to have the ability to identify talented people and to read faces.

Not only did Lu Zhaolin fail to pass the imperial examination, but he was also imprisoned.

What put him in jail was his most proud work, "Ancient Style of Chang'an", a poem as famous as Luo Binwang's "Imperial Capital", which was elegant and renowned throughout the world.

There was a passage in the poem that was believed to be a satire on the powerful official Wu Sansi, and as a result he was framed and thrown into prison.

Although he was released soon after, he contracted rheumatism in prison.

From then on, he began a miserable life of poverty and illness, until he drowned himself in the Ying River.

However, Lu Zhaolin's life was exactly the kind in which he had nothing he should have, but everything he shouldn't have. He was poor and sick, and his illness was quite serious.

Lu Zhaolin suffered from rheumatism. When he was ill, he felt pain all over his body and was nearly paralyzed. It was extremely difficult for him to even walk a step.

In order to cure his illness, he sought medical advice everywhere and got a secret recipe that required the use of cinnabar.

At this time, Lu Zhaolin had already spent all the family savings on his medical treatment, so he had to borrow money from everywhere.

Lu Zhaolin's article on borrowing money was sincere and humble in tone, but his gorgeous literary talent was forced to be used to borrow money for medical treatment. It is heartbreaking to see such a talented man fall to such a state.

Lu Zhaolin followed the King of Medicine Sun Simiao and lived in seclusion in Taibai Mountain, hoping to cure his illness, but in the end he failed.

It is said that at that time, the King of Medicine Sun Simiao gave Lu Zhaolin a pill and a lot of cinnabar. After Lu Zhaolin took the pill and cinnabar, his condition improved, but at this time Lu Zhaolin's father died.

Lu Zhaolin returned home to attend the funeral. He cried so hard at the funeral that he vomited and vomited out the pills he had just taken. This caused his old illness to relapse, and his condition became more serious than before.

So, on a bleak autumn morning, Lu Zhaolin moved out of the house inch by inch.

He came to the bank of Yingshui River, looked at his reflection in the water, sighed deeply, and then jumped into the river to commit suicide.

His death also makes future generations cherish his literary works even more. No matter how rough his life was, his brilliant achievements will be recorded in history forever and praised by future generations. (End of this chapter)
