Knight and Wand
Chapter 31: The Rout
Chapter 31: The Rout
Boris, lying in the bushes, looked at the group of Kantadars running towards the village of Selva.
The fire had gradually disappeared down the hillside, and he couldn't help but fall into deep fear.
Go back quickly and report the news?
Bah! Report a piece of shit!
Boris's movement caused the wound to move, and he shivered in pain.
Anyway, his father and brothers were conscripted to fight in the war and were not in the village. How could he be in the mood to risk his life and death to care about the lives of other people in this broken place? As for the two gossipy old guys and the other villagers at home? Humph. It would have nothing to do with him if they all died.
not to mention.
The image of Olivia flashed through his mind, and Boris couldn't help but laugh with pride.
You stinky bitch, I asked you to protect the spy from outside the village. I really want to see with my own eyes what you will look like when disaster strikes.
Boris felt secretly happy as he imagined the girl being brutally ravaged by the Kantadars.
He climbed up with difficulty, his feet seemed to be infused with energy by his joyful mood. He turned around and walked carefully along the dirt road towards the distance.
"We have to go to town and inform the Lord."
Boris disappeared at the end of the road without hesitation.
Under the cover of darkness, dozens of cavalrymen who had experienced a long escape stopped far away at the foot of a hill not far from the village. They extinguished their torches as ordered and waited quietly for the scouts' reports.
After fleeing the battlefield in defeat, both the men and horses were extremely exhausted after days of fleeing. The food and water they carried with them had been used up, and they were almost out of ammunition and food. The discovery ahead gave these exhausted remnants a boost of morale.
Several knights and attendants who had explored the way early rode their horses across the slope and quickly returned to the team to report the situation to their master.
The noble knight Kantadar, who seemed to be leading the army, listened to the report from his servant and learned that there was only a small village with dozens of households ahead. The fatigue on his face immediately disappeared and he was overjoyed.
Under the moonlight, he turned around and gave instructions to his knights and mercenary leaders, which was almost equivalent to sentencing this small foreign village to death.
Soon, the remaining troops were divided into four groups.
The leader's orders were simple and cruel.
After a short rest, when dawn came, the various troops surrounded the village and attacked it, taking what they wanted and leaving no one alive.
No villagers are allowed to escape.
The noble knights quietly led their cavalry attendants around the village, surrounding it from the east, west and south.
Led by the mercenary leader, a dozen mercenary cavalrymen wearing armor of varying weights bypassed the hill and quickly ran towards the hillside north of the village.
According to the reconnaissance report, there is a small tower on the hillside, but it is unknown whether there is anyone there. It can be used as a temporary sentry camp before the attack.
As the horses' hooves trampled the dirt road under the night sky, danger was getting closer and closer.
In the windmill, Leon, who was dozing in the corner by the window, seemed to hear some noise.
Having just experienced a village thug breaking into his house, he opened his eyes alertly and listened attentively.
Hearing the faint sound of approaching horse hooves, Leon quickly stood up and walked to the window, peeking out through the gap in the half-open wooden window.
At some point, shadows of many people and horses appeared on the hillside.
In the moonlight of the night, the armored and robed cavalrymen were looming.
Leon was shocked. Where did this group of cavalry come from?
Could it be that these were the helpers that Boris had called to take revenge on them?
It's impossible. If that country thug had such connections and abilities, he wouldn't have done such a sneaky thing.
Lohak and Azerien also ran over, leaned over the window to look out, and suddenly their hearts were filled with uneasiness.
A quick glance showed that at least a dozen of them were approaching, which was more than the three of them could handle!
"What's going on? Could it be the bandits near Selva?" Lohak gritted his teeth and lowered his voice nervously: "We just ran into a thief, and now we run into a bandit? Why are we so unlucky tonight!" "It seems we can't get around it, what should we do?" Azerian looked at Leon. Those cavalrymen approaching in the dark were obviously up to no good.
"It's too late to escape. There's a cliff behind the hillside, and the only way downhill is blocked by that group of people. We'll run into them head-on as soon as we go out." Leon was so anxious that sweat broke out on his forehead. He outlined the terrain of the hillside in his mind and realized that the three of them had no chance of getting around the cavalry, and it was impossible for their two legs to outrun the other side's four legs.
Looking back and looking around, there seemed to be no place to hide inside the windmill.
Suddenly raising his head, he saw the remnants of the windmill turntable attic above him.
The so-called "attic" was just a space made up of several thick wooden beams crisscrossing each other. Looking from the bottom up, the space between the wooden beams and columns was hollow, making it impossible to hide.
But what Leon noticed was the hole in the top of the tower above the "attic" through which moonlight seeped!
"Quick! Let's climb up! Climb through that hole to the roof!"
They acted immediately. The three of them moved a wooden box to use as a footstool. Leon stepped on it and jumped up, grabbing the wooden beam and struggling to climb up to the crossbeam compartment.
Thinking of something, he turned around and called to his companions: "Hand over the blankets, quilts, and our bags. We can't let them find out that someone has lived here."
Lohak quickly picked up the rolled-up bedding by the wall and threw it up to Leon. Azerien also picked up the incense burner left by Boris on the floor. Fortunately, they had packed their bags in advance, otherwise it would be troublesome.
The three of them packed their belongings, climbed up the wooden beam, and continued to skillfully build a human ladder using the narrow space on the partition, and then took turns to climb towards the entrance of the cave.
At this time, the low neighing of horses and the strange whispers of people under the windmill tower could be heard.
The flimsy wooden door on the first floor of the windmill was apparently unable to offer any resistance to the violence.
The sound of banging on the door was followed.
With a bang, the wooden door was slammed open, and Leon and the other two finally climbed to the outside of the top of the windmill tower with rolled up bedding.
Lying on the roof, the teenagers were so nervous that they didn't dare to breathe.
Outside the windmill tower, Leon could already hear the chattering sounds below.
"Uriah, it's a Kantadar bastard." Lohak lowered his voice and said angrily.
"Shh..." Leon raised his hand to signal for silence, but he was also full of annoyance in his heart. He felt that these Kantadar people were like dog-skin plasters and could not be shaken off.
How did they appear in Orland?
Could it be that the Kantadars have defeated the Orlanders at the border and are leading their troops in?
Through the hole on the side of the tower, Leon heard the metallic sounds of the armor and weapons of the soldiers who broke into the windmill.
Heavy footsteps quickly stepped over the wooden steps.
Several mercenaries, armed with sharp blades, checked every floor of the windmill tower in the dark, but found nothing.
"Is there anyone inside?"
The leader of the Kantadar mercenaries outside the tower asked loudly inside.
A mercenary kicked a wooden box casually, walked forward and pushed open the wooden window on the third floor, stuck his head out and replied to the leader downstairs: "Boss, this broken place seems to have been abandoned for a long time, there is not even a hair left."
The mercenary leader looked at the village at night below the hillside, then turned back and instructed his men on the windmill, "We will go down later. You take a few people to stay and keep watch. This place has a wide field of vision. Help us keep an eye on whether there are any pursuers coming."
"Then boss, don't forget to help your brothers grab one more." The mercenary on the third floor reminded the leader.
Plundering villages and towns has always been the main business of mercenaries to make a fortune, and killing enemies in battle is a side job.
"Damn it, I've never lacked your help before. Don't be lazy. When we're done, I'll ask my brothers to leave a few village girls for you to vent your anger on." The mercenary leader cursed with a smile.
It’s okay, I came back early, and here is the second update. However, the release time of tomorrow’s two updates will definitely be postponed. It will definitely be too late to code at midnight and noon.
