Chapter 13 Things They'll Never Know

Tang Xu had been busy running around for several days, so Friday came exceptionally quickly.

Although meeting Yan Shiyu for dinner was a big deal, Tang Xu still spent the morning visiting two banks. While he was still hesitating about whether to visit a third bank, he suddenly received a phone call.

After receiving the call, Tang Xu immediately headed straight to the south of the city.

Located in the south of the city, the Jiang family's old house is hidden in lush greenery all year round. The interior is kept at a constant temperature and humidity, providing the most comfortable feeling, but it is as deserted as ever.

Tang Xu entered the room, went straight up to the second floor, knocked on one of the doors, and saw Jiang Beiheng taking his medicine under the care of a home nurse.

After nearly half a year apart, Jiang Beiheng had become extremely thin, and when he saw her, he managed to force a smile.

"Dad." Tang Xu's heart skipped a beat, and she stepped forward. "When did you get back? Why didn't you tell me beforehand?"

Six months ago, Jiang Beiheng was diagnosed with brain cancer and was sent abroad for treatment by Jiang Muchen.

Since then, Tang Xu has never seen Jiang Beiheng again, while Jiang Muchen has taken over the family business and become the undisputed head of the Jiang family.

"I got back the day before yesterday," Jiang Beiheng said in a rough, hoarse voice. "I just got off the plane, I wasn't feeling well, and I rested for two days before letting you know..."

Jiang Beiheng is only fifty years old this year. Before he fell ill, he was a spirited chairman of the Jiang family. However, in just half a year, he has become like this.

Tang Xu felt a little sad, but still forced a smile. "It's good that you're back. Staying at home is always more comfortable than outside. You'll get better soon."

Jiang Beiheng smiled and nodded, then added, "I know about your family situation..."

He was still sick, and Tang Xu didn't really want to talk about these things as soon as they met, but she couldn't bring herself to tell him not to worry about it.

Now, she's seizing every ounce of help she can get.

"Don't worry, although I've stepped down from the Jiang family, I still have old friends, and we can still exchange a few words..." Jiang Beiheng said, "Mu Chen is confused, don't take it to heart..."

Tang Xu was speechless for a moment.

She was Jiang Beiheng's personally chosen daughter-in-law. Jiang Beiheng's greatest expectation for her has always been that she can help Jiang Muchen turn over a new leaf and that the two of them can live a harmonious and happy life together.

He and Jiang Muchen had a long-standing father-son feud, and he had always placed his hopes on Tang Xu, however...

Tang Xu was destined to disappoint him.

“Dad, I can forgive him for not helping me when I was dying, but now I have to save myself,” Tang Xu said in a low voice. “It’s impossible for me to be with him.”

Jiang Beiheng immediately became anxious, "With me here, the Song family will be fine... Don't you trust me?"

"dad……"

Just as Tang Xu was about to say something, footsteps suddenly came from outside the door, and then Sister Ying, who had taken care of the Jiang family for many years, appeared at the door. "Sir, we have a guest to visit you. They have already entered."

Upon hearing this, Jiang Beiheng tried to sit up straight, but Tang Xu quickly grabbed a pillow to place behind him before turning around and going out to greet the guests.

She had just stepped out of the room when the guests went upstairs.

Tang Xu froze instantly.

Although Mr. Yan is over eighty years old, he is still in good spirits and has sharp eyes.

And behind him, that tall and slender figure, who else could it be but Yan Shiyu?

Their eyes met, and she paused for a moment, while Yan Shiyu's gaze remained as deep as the ocean, revealing no emotion.

Tang Xu quickly looked away and stepped forward, calling out, "Old Master Yan."

Grandpa Yan glanced at her briefly, his serious face remaining expressionless. He merely nodded slightly, showing no interest in who Tang Xu was, despite never having met her before. He led Yan Shiyu directly towards Jiang Beiheng's room. Tang Xu stepped aside, brushing past Yan Shiyu.

The two entered the room one after the other. Tang Xu turned around and went downstairs to help Sister Ying prepare tea.

When she returned upstairs with the tea, she heard Jiang Beiheng praising her.

"...He is truly a handsome man, Uncle. Now that the Yan family has a worthy successor, you can rest assured."

"You flatter me."

Yan Shiyu's voice was as calm and detached as ever.

Tang Xu brought in tea and handed it to the two guests.

Yan Shiyu took the initiative to extend his hand.

When Tang Xu accidentally touched his long, slender fingers, memories of that hand in the hotel room on the night of her fever flashed through her mind again. Her heart trembled slightly, and she subconsciously pulled her hand back.

However, the next moment, the force from his hand on the other end of the teacup prevented her from pulling back.

Yan Shiyu stretched out his hand, took the teacup from her hand, and took a sip.

He put down his teacup, then looked up at her again, his eyes still heavy, and said only, "Thank you."

Tang Xu smiled slightly, which could be considered a response.

Jiang Beiheng smiled and said, "This is my daughter-in-law, Tang Xu. Uncle probably hasn't met her yet... She's a very good girl."

Grandpa Yan then looked Tang Xu over again, nodded slightly, and asked, "How has Mu Chen been lately?"

Tang Xu was silent for a few seconds before speaking, "It should be fine, right?"

Upon hearing this answer, Old Master Yan glanced sideways, his expression stern, clearly dissatisfied with the response.

Jiang Beiheng sighed softly, "You unfilial son, let's not talk about him... Have you seen him?"

This question was directed at Yan Shiyu.

Tang Xu silently retreated to the window, opened it a crack, and heard Yan Shiyu reply, "Unfortunately, we haven't met yet."

Jiang Beiheng smiled helplessly, "He has a bad temper, he's cold and stubborn. If you run into him another day, be more tolerant of him..."

"You flatter me," Yan Shiyu said. "I have just returned to China. If we meet again in the future, there will probably be many things I can learn from him."

Jiang Beiheng sighed helplessly, then suddenly remembered something and called out to Tang Xu, "Look, I forgot to introduce you. This is your Grandfather Yan's grandson. You should greet him—"

“I know,” Tang Xu quickly interjected. “We met at the Yan family’s banquet.”

"Really? That's good..." Jiang Beiheng nodded and said to Grandpa Yan, "These younger generations don't like to visit each other anymore. I'm afraid they won't even recognize their relatives in the future..."

With his back to Tang Xu, Yan Shiyu sat to the left of Old Master Yan, listening to Old Master Yan and Jiang Beiheng talk. His posture was calm and composed, without a trace of emotion.

Tang Xu glanced at it only once before quickly looking away.

Neither Grandpa Yan nor Jiang Beiheng knew that they had met at that banquet more than once.

They had no idea that she had invited him to dinner that evening...

So...shall we still go?
