Chapter 50
Guo Mi suddenly turned around and glared at Caesar, her eyes silently questioning him: Why is Slok still here?
Caesar looked embarrassed and looked away.
Slok, completely oblivious to his unpopularity, trotted over with light steps, first nuzzling Caesar ingratiatingly, then taking the initiative to greet Guo Mi:
"Hey hey, good morning."
Guo Mi took two steps back, and the little bear huddled behind her legs.
Perhaps because she was used to unfamiliar male bears, she was not as nervous and afraid as she had been when facing Caesar before. Instead, she boldly poked her head out to examine the extra male bear.
Slok, being quite clever, tilted his head and spoke to the two bear cubs:
Have you seen me before?
The fishbone immediately shrank back and hid behind Guo Mi. The salmon also shrank back, but then stopped. After hesitating for a moment, it whispered:
"I've seen it."
They were all bears living in this snowy region, and no matter how hard Kaya tried to avoid it, she still inevitably encountered other bears.
Bears like Slok, who roam around all day, are quite common.
This male bear had never attacked them before. In fact, it would avoid them or stay put if it could smell them from afar. When the mother brought them to meet him, she was always much more relaxed than when she met other male bears.
...My mother used to say that he was a good-for-nothing bear, and that they must never be like him.
The salmon looked at Slok with a newfound curiosity. This male bear looked very strong, so why did his mother say he was a good-for-nothing?
Slok had seen these two little cubs before; they followed Kaya around. The bigger one was quite bold, while the smaller one often relied on Kaya to carry it.
Receiving a strange look from the salmon, he asked:
"what happened?"
The salmon looked at Guo Mi again.
Guo Mi thought she was scared, so she secretly gave her an encouraging look. She could take on three bears like Slok by herself.
Thus, the male bear, who had been constantly looked down upon, received a soul-searching question from the innocent gaze of the cub:
"Mom used to say you were a good-for-nothing bear, why?"
The male bear, who had originally wanted to perform well and gain more favor, was stunned.
Caesar, who was not far away, turned around when he heard the little bear cub's question. He looked at the petrified Slok and sneered.
Guo Mi endured it again and again, but finally couldn't hold back anymore:
"……puff."
Slok froze for a moment, then suddenly said generously:
"You're right, maybe I really am a spineless bear. When I was little, I was like..."
He craned his neck to look behind Guo Mi, trying to recall the name of the timid little bear cub, but unfortunately he couldn't remember. He could only say:
When I was little, I was just as timid as your younger brother.
Upon hearing his words, the fishbone hiding behind Guo Mi immediately buried its head under Guo Mi's stomach.
Slok smiled at his expression:
"But look, I'm doing just fine now. I'm happy every day, and my brother Caesar will protect me."
When he said "protect me," there was no shame in his eyes for his own cowardice, but rather a deep sense of pride.
In fact, he was absolutely right. Although Caesar was not kind to him and always beat and scolded him, he was indeed protecting him all along.
For an adult bear, being able to rely on its brothers is like a dream come true, and Slok is very content.
Caesar was taken aback by what he said. He was annoyed that Slok was saying such unhelpful things again, but he felt a strange feeling in his heart that he couldn't quite put his finger on.
He raised his paw and rubbed it against his ear, feeling annoyed and confused. He simply lay down, closed his eyes, and rested, wanting to avoid seeing anything.
The salmon had already poked half its body out from behind Guo Mi. Hearing Slock's words, its eyes lit up. It turned to look at the fishbone, who was too ashamed to look up, and a flicker of emotion crossed its eyes. It whispered:
"I also want to be happy every day with fish bones."
Guo Mi noticed that the fishbone's body, which was desperately trying to burrow under her stomach, suddenly stopped!
Slok chuckled twice:
"Then you must protect him well."
The conversation between the two bears, one large and one small, was so natural that they ignored the survival laws of polar bears, as if the two cubs would live together for life. Guo Mi didn't know if this was right or wrong.
The salmon and fish bones are the miraculously surviving bear cubs who have lost their mother and depend on each other for survival.
People always say they want to break the rules and live according to their own desires; perhaps bears feel the same way.
After this conversation, the two bear cubs became much closer to Slok, and they would talk to him when Guo Mi was with them.
Slok, who was good at reading people, realized that even though Caesar was the strongest bear by the lake, he still knew that Guo Mi's permission was required for him to stay.
He didn't have the guts to threaten Gomi like Caesar did, so he ended up setting his sights on the little bear.
Although Slok is a "good-for-nothing" male bear, Fishbone seems quite interested in him and has even stepped out from behind Gomi to sit next to the salmon and listen to his stories.
He's become much bolder.
For this reason, after much deliberation, Guo Mi still took the risk of letting the two bear cubs make contact with Slok.
For several days in a row, Slok behaved very well, sitting quietly to the side and not getting too close to the bear, before Guo Mi reluctantly judged him as qualified.
However, most of the time it was Slok who cracked jokes, fabricating many of his "wonderful adventures" in the Arctic to win the admiring gazes of the two bear cubs.
Guo Mi listened from the side, and when she heard Slok say, "I climbed to the highest point of the snow mountain and watched the sunrise there," she couldn't help but roll her eyes.
The mountain walls were steep, and with the added layer of snow, it was very difficult for the male bear to climb up.
Especially for a well-fed and robust male bear like Slok, it is even more difficult.
The two bear cubs looked at him with starry eyes. Slok sat there with his head held high, enjoying the envious gazes of the two little ones.
The moment Guo Mi's paw touched his back, before she could even exert any force, the male bear was already startled and jumped up, looking at Guo Mi's missed paw with lingering fear.
His sudden rapid breathing betrayed his earlier tension.
Guo Mi looked at her own paws, then at Slok, and chuckled:
"You climbed to the top of the snow-capped mountain?"
Slok immediately raised his head:
"Of course!"
Guo Mi waved her paws to drive him away:
"Alright, you've finished your task for today. Go away."
Slok instantly stopped being terrified, lay down on the ground, closed his eyes, and remained motionless.
Guo Mi stared at him for a long time before saying in an annoyed tone:
"The fish are on the shore."
The male bear instantly got up from the ground, shook its fur, and walked happily toward the shore.
On the shore, three fish, already stunned, lay quietly.
Slok lay on the lakeside, contentedly enjoying his reward.
These three fish would be nothing to an ordinary male bear, barely enough to fill its teeth, but for the gluttonous Slok, it was the perfect reward!
Guo Mi watched him eat with relish and thought to herself that he was no different from a bear cub.
After returning the two bear cubs to the back of the snow hill, she came back to the lake, swallowed hard, gently lowered her paws, and then slowly sank into the water.
The lake water is no longer as cold as it used to be, and Guo Mi was able to adapt completely after a short while.
She recalled the movements the summer had taught her, tried to maintain her balance, and used her front paws to propel herself forward.
Suddenly, she heard a soft splashing sound again. The water around Guo Mi was disturbed, and a huge creature moved closer to her with the current.
Caesar was forbidden from touching the bear cub and could only watch from a distance.
