Chapter 75 Black Book of the Dead
Chapter 75 Black Book of the Dead
"Hurry up and pack up and get out of this damn place." Jonathan was sober too. He was spinning around anxiously with a look of fear on his face. He felt very uneasy about the threat of the curse.
O'Connor comforted him: "It's so late now. Traveling in the desert at night will only lead to death."
Evelyn was the one who wanted to stay the most: "This is the greatest archaeological discovery of this century. As for the curse, we just have to avoid triggering it."
After she finished speaking, she looked at Weiss, hoping for his affirmative answer.
"I don't know if the curse has been triggered." Weiss shook his head.
Although in the original plot, it was Evelynn who recited a spell from the Black Book of the Dead to awaken Imhotep, which led to the subsequent plot.
But everything was too coincidental, as if someone was silently pushing all this to happen.
Weiss wanted to know if his intervention could change anything.
"Now is definitely not a good time to leave Hamunatta. We can talk about it tomorrow morning."
The next morning, Evelyn and Jonathan had a fierce argument.
Evelyn wanted to stay here and continue the archaeological research, but Jonathan was afraid of the curse and insisted on leaving.
In the end, he was persuaded by Evelyn, or rather, by the treasure in the underground palace.
"We have to leave before dark today." Jonathan said confidently in the underground palace, "No matter how much treasure there is, you have to be alive to spend it. And we agreed that any treasure we find will belong to me, right?"
That's why Jonathan stayed.
Several people returned to the compartment, where Imhotep's coffin was still quietly placed.
"No wonder his coffin was buried at the feet of the Grim Reaper." Seeing O'Connor and Jonathan's puzzled expressions, Evelyn continued to explain, "Only unforgivable sinners are buried at the feet of the Grim Reaper's statue after death."
"He had an affair with the princess, killed the pharaoh, and even tried to break the boundary between the underworld and the human world and resurrect the dead. Each of these crimes is a serious crime, and this high priest has brought this upon himself."
Evelyn sighed and began to examine the coffin.
After careful observation, she found that a mechanism engraved with a scarab image was very consistent with the mysterious box.
She excitedly took out the mysterious box and put it on the mechanism. As expected, the mysterious box was the lock of the scarab mechanism. Then she turned it gently.
"Click~Click" the sound of the mechanism turning was heard, accompanied by a teeth-grinding friction sound, and the ancient coffin was opened.
What surprised Wes was that even though they knew about the curse, neither the cautious O'Connor nor the timid Jonathan tried to stop Evelyn's behavior.
When the coffin lid was fully opened, what came into view was an inner coffin carved with a human figure. Evelyn was explaining to O'Connor that the holy law of the inner coffin had been chiseled off, which meant that the people in the coffin would be cursed for generations to come.
The anxious Jonathan didn't care about that. He snatched the key from Evelyn's hand and inserted it into the keyhole of the human-shaped inner coffin. Then he couldn't wait to turn the key and open the inner coffin.
Inside the inner coffin was a mummified corpse, and the owner of the corpse was none other than Imhotep. His mouth was open hideously, and he must have experienced great pain before his death.
Evelyn, with intense curiosity, scrutinized the coffin closely, not missing a single detail. She discovered clear scratch marks on the inside of the coffin lid, indicating the person had been mummified alive. Then, from the scarab beetle found within, she learned that the mummy's owner, Imhotep, had been executed by insect bite.
"The punishment of being bitten by insects was the most vicious curse in ancient Egypt, usually used against the most heinous criminals. The documents I've read don't record anyone being subjected to this punishment. It's said to bring unimaginable disasters."
Evelyn explained her discovery to everyone in vivid detail.
Her mind was momentarily occupied by this astonishing discovery, and she began to speculate on the origin and meaning of this cruel punishment.
Jonathan on the side had no interest in history at all. In his eyes, only those glittering treasures were the focus of attention.
His eyes scanned the area around the coffin eagerly, concerned only about whether there were any valuable burial objects.
"There should be something valuable here, right?" Jonathan muttered to himself as he rummaged through the contents of the coffin, hoping to find some valuable burial objects. However, as a criminal with such heinous crimes, how could Imhotep have any rich burial objects?
Having gained nothing, he decided to turn around and look for treasure elsewhere. He seemed to have completely forgotten about the curse and was only thinking about finding those precious treasures.
Hamunaptra was exceptionally quiet at night, with only the occasional sound of the wind breaking the tranquility.
Jonathan became increasingly depressed and kept complaining about his bad luck.
However, the Americans reaped a great harvest. A smug man came over holding a holy urn and mocked Jonathan and the others.
"It seems like your luck is not very good. We found a lot of good things."
This made Jonathan feel even worse.
At this time, Wes walked to a corner and chanted a spell: "The Black Book of the Dead" flew over.
Strangely, there was no movement after a moment.
Only then did he realize that the Black Book of the Dead was itself an ancient magic book, which might be protected by magic, and he could not summon it directly with magic.
Wes could only go looking for the American who took the Black Book of the Dead. Since he had not dealt with the Americans face to face since he came here, he didn't know which American it was. He could only find a place close to the Americans and observe them temporarily.
Unexpectedly, Evelyn who was passing by accidentally discovered that the American professor was trying desperately to open a thick book. The cover of the book was made of a hard and smooth black stone slab with some strange symbols and patterns carved on the stone slab. There was also a mechanism on the cover of the book that was the same as the mysterious box. He immediately realized that the American was holding the "Black Book of the Dead".
Then a bold idea came to my mind.
Evelyn decided to sneak up on the American while he was asleep and get the Black Book of the Dead.
Under the cover of night, Evelyn carefully approached the American.
Her heart was pounding, and her nervousness made her breathing quicken. She gently pulled the Black Book of the Dead out of the American's arms, and at that moment, she almost held her breath, afraid of waking anyone.
"You know what? What you're doing is called stealing." Just as Evelyn was about to leave, the sleeping O'Connor suddenly spoke.
