Industrial Revolution of the Mage Lords
Chapter 68 Valley Outpost
Chapter 68 Valley Outpost
As soon as the sky was getting light, wisps of smoke rose from the camp.
Vaughn walked out of the tent and headed towards the temporary canteen where the aroma of porridge wafted.
"Captain Vaughan! Good morning!" Soldiers kept stopping to salute and greet him, including veterans of the Sharpshooters and new recruits from the reserve team.
Lord Harvey established a strict hierarchy in the army, which included that ordinary soldiers must stand and salute with their fists clenched on their chests when they met a captain like Vaughn, or a squad leader or deputy captain.
Vaughn returned the greetings with a stern face, but he couldn't help feeling a little elated in his heart.
He was not proud of the fact that his rank was higher than those soldiers, but because of the glorious achievement he had made in the frontal battle against the evil orcs yesterday evening, when only fifty soldiers of the Sharpshooter Team wiped out nearly two hundred evil orcs.
Vaughn himself completed thirty-three kills.
Even Mr. Asdalen smiled and praised him in front of others as "the sharpshooter in the sharpshooter team."
He subconsciously raised his hand and stroked the badge he had been wearing on his left chest. It was the badge given to him by Lord Harvey himself as a reward for the winner of the shooting competition.
Vaughn thought happily that maybe once all the evil orcs in the valley area were driven back to the ice field, he would be able to get a new medal here.
Pierce and Asdalen stood together, watching the alchemy beasts carrying construction materials back and forth on the high ground, and the logistics soldiers who were directing the alchemy beasts to level the ground and cut down trees.
"I will return to the territory tomorrow to report the battle situation and the next plan to Lord Harvey..." Asdalen said to Pierce with admiration, "You are now fully capable of taking on the responsibility of commanding this combat team. I will implant the alchemy beast with the command and stay here. I will bring you enough supplies when I return."
……
Pierce watched Asdalen and several alchemical beasts slowly leave towards the territory.
"Sir, the foundation and lower walls of the fortress have been completed. We just need to wait overnight for the cement to dry, and the outer walls will be basically completed by tomorrow."
Pierce came back to his senses, nodded, and responded, "That's right. Let's arrange for all soldiers and alchemy beasts to camp inside the fortress tonight."
The soldiers he arranged to be on guard at the riverbank have sent back news that there are traces of evil orc sentinels appearing on the opposite side of the river, and they are also observing their movements.
I guess those stupid guys would never have thought that they would build a solid concrete fortress out of thin air in just a few nights, firmly guarding the pass where they would cross the river.
Next, Pierce planned to strictly follow Lord Harvey's previous plan.
Focusing on this outpost in the valley, we will continue to attack the invading evil orcs crossing the river and deplete their manpower.
This batch of soldiers will be rotated with the new batch of soldiers brought by Asdalen in a month, so that the existing military forces in the territory can conduct actual combat training in the river valley area.
Just like the frontal battle last night, with less than a dozen lightly wounded soldiers on our side, we were able to easily wipe out most of the attacking evil orcs.
As long as the magic ammunition provided by Lord Harvey is transported from the territory in an endless supply.
The evil orcs are just living, breathing moving targets.
……
Wayne and Duff, captains of the Sharpshooters, led their respective teams of ten people to patrol the riverbank in the afternoon.
Dave walked in front with a gun slung over his shoulder, looking arrogant and humming a tuneless tune from time to time.
"Can you be quiet for a while? You're disturbing my observation of the movements on the river bank!" Wayne couldn't stand it anymore and finally started cursing.
Dave rolled his eyes and said disdainfully, "Why are you panicking? I wish they could sneak across the river and give me a few more kills."
Last night, Dave single-handedly killed eighteen evil orcs, just one more than Wayne. He has always been petty, but at this moment he is extremely arrogant and will not miss any opportunity to mock the other party.
"You bastard! You're going to brag about your luck for the rest of your life, right?"
"Yoho, then you can't even eat hot dog shit?"
The team members following in neat rows behind were all veterans. They secretly listened to the crazy bickering between their two captains. They were trying so hard to hold back their laughter that their mouth corners were cramping, but they didn't dare to interrupt at all.
One of the soldiers leisurely turned to peer into the woods across the riverbank. Suddenly, he noticed something was amiss. "Captain! I say... there seems to be some movement in the woods over there."
The soldiers immediately took out their guns and aimed.
"Wait!" Wayne quickly raised his hand to stop them from firing indiscriminately under stress.
He yelled, "Magic bullets aren't some fucking sheep's ass poop. Don't waste them!"
He and Duff looked at each other and understood each other. They tacitly slowed down their pace and slowly moved towards the woods with guns in hand.
There was a sound of grass rubbing against each other in the bushes, and then a fat gray-haired hare jumped out, scaring everyone.
"Damn! This little dog scared me!" Duff cursed. He was reluctant to shoot with his gun, so he put the gun back on his back, took out the standard dagger issued by the soldiers from his waist, and rushed into the woods after the rabbit.
Wayne had no time to stop them, so he could only wave his hand helplessly and let everyone follow him into the woods.
Just think of it as a lunch for your team with some wild game and meat.
When they caught up with Duff, they found him squatting on the ground with a bloody dagger in his mouth, skinning a fat rabbit with a grin on his face.
In just a short while, this guy actually dug a rabbit hole.
"Wayne, don't say I'm not nice. We just don't want to take these little things back. Let's make a fire!"
The two soldiers walked forward, rubbing their hands and grinning, ready to pick up the dead branches scattered around the ground to build a fire and barbecue.
There was a faint fishy smell in the air. Wayne didn't know if it was because the wild rabbit was too smelly or what, but he always felt a little uncomfortable in his heart.
His gaze suddenly narrowed to the slightly shaking bushes behind Dave.
"Dav! Watch your back!"
Dave turned around in a daze and saw a tall evil orc suddenly jump out from the bushes behind him, holding a bone short spear and stabbing straight at his chest.
The next second, he was pushed away heavily and fell to the side, rolling and crawling.
Wayne's gun barrel almost penetrated the evil orc's mouth and the shot blew off the back of his head.
The evil orc fell directly on Wayne, twitching for half a second and then became motionless.
"Wayne! This damn evil orc actually attacked us!" Dave quickly got up and joined forces with two soldiers who were closer to move the body of the evil orc that was pressing down Wayne.
"Ugh! My stomach!" Wayne screamed.
Only then did everyone realize that there was a short bone spear stuck in his stomach, and blood was quickly seeping through his black uniform.
"Damn it! Tear off a piece of cloth and bandage him!" Dave glared at the soldiers in chaos with his red eyes.
"Damn it, Wayne, I can even see your intestines...Fuck, you're not allowed to die!" Dave cursed in a trembling voice as he tightly wrapped Wayne's abdominal wound with a cloth.
He hesitated for a moment, then grasped the short spear that was stuck in his abdomen with both hands, and was about to pull it out with a gritted teeth.
Wayne suddenly stopped wailing, glared at Duff and said angrily: "I think you just want me to die! Don't pull it out!"
He turned his head with difficulty and ordered the other soldiers, "Hurry up and make a stretcher and carry me back to the outpost!"
He remembered that during training, Commander Pierce said that if anyone was fatally injured, as long as they did not die on the spot, they would be carried back to the camp for treatment.
Perhaps Commander Pierce brought a lot of the Lord's magical potions this time, and drinking a sip of it would bring him back to life immediately.
