Chapter 250 Your Game is Over
Lin En's eyes darkened, and he quickly searched for the name in his mind. He opened an old file, paused after turning to a page, and pointed at the content. "Vincent Railton, I know this name. He's a financial broker who specializes in handling capital flows for criminals and is particularly skilled at concealing the source of funds. This guy has been missing for several years, and it seems he's reappeared."
Mark nodded and handed over the report. "There's something even more interesting. We discovered that Vincent's name appeared in Blackwood's bankruptcy records. He was one of the consultants responsible for liquidating the family assets."
Lin En's eyes grew sharper. He slammed the report on the table and said in a low voice, "This shows that he was not only involved in the liquidation that year, but he was also very likely directly manipulating the collapse of the Blackwood family. Now that he's back, what does he want?"
Mark shrugged. "Either he wants to cover up what happened back then, or he wants to make use of the remaining resources. This guy has always been profit-driven."
Lin En pondered for a moment, then stood up. "Whatever he wants to do, we have to find him. Send someone to keep an eye on his possible hiding places and notify all relevant departments. This person has become a key target."
Meanwhile, Kate sat in her apartment, her computer open, importing the photos she'd taken that day. Images flashed by, capturing the ledgers, the pistol, and Lynn's focused expression at the scene. Her finger rested on a magnified photo of the ledger, her gaze hardening.
"Capital flows, offshore accounts, family bankruptcies..." she whispered to herself, "What's behind all this?"
Kate's professional sensitivity prevented her from letting go of these questions. She opened some old news archives, searching for information related to the Blackwood family. There were few reports on the financial fraud case back then, most of which mentioned the family's sudden bankruptcy, but almost no information on the flow of funds or the inside story.
She stared at the screen, her brow furrowed. "Why was such a major case handled so hastily? Someone must have been behind this."
Kate's intuition told her that Lynn must know more but hadn't told her yet. She couldn't help but pick up her phone and dial Lynn's number.
After the call was connected, Lynn’s low voice came: “Kate, I’m very busy now, what’s the matter?”
"Lynn, I'm just wondering how complicated this Blackwood situation is?" Kate asked bluntly. "You know this isn't just a run-of-the-mill bankruptcy, right?"
Lynn was silent for a moment and sighed. "Kate, there's not much I can tell you, but you're right. This isn't just an ordinary bankruptcy. A lot of things were covered up back then, and what we've uncovered now is just the tip of the iceberg."
Kate gripped the phone tightly, her tone insistent: "Then why don't you let me participate? I can help, Lynn, you know I have the ability to find more clues."
"Because you're not a police officer, Kate." Lynn's voice was filled with helplessness. "This matter has gone beyond the scope of news reporting. It concerns the interests of many people. Your involvement will only put yourself in danger."
Kate was silent. She understood Lynn's concerns, but she still couldn't let go of the story.
"Okay, I'll wait for your news." She finally compromised, but her heart was still filled with resentment.
After Lynn hung up the phone, he looked at the documents on his desk and took a deep breath. He knew Kate was determined and that she wouldn't let go easily. But now he had to focus on finding Vincent Railton and uncovering the truth behind this case.
Lynn and Mark continued their pursuit of Vincent, gradually uncovering clues. Through financial transactions and several well-hidden files, they located several possible locations where Vincent might be hiding. However, just as they were about to take further action, a strange phone call came to Lynn's phone.
"Good evening, Inspector Lin." The voice on the other end of the line was low and cold, with an unsettling calmness. "It seems you've been very interested in some old stories lately."
Lin En was startled for a moment, then regained his composure: "Who are you?"
"It doesn't matter who I am. What matters is that you're touching something you shouldn't be touching." The other person's voice was faintly threatening. "Some truths are buried for a reason, Inspector. If you keep digging, you'll only put more people in danger, yourself included."
Lin En gripped the phone tightly, her tone stern: "Really? You think a few threats can make me back down?"
The other party was silent for a moment, then chuckled: "I know you are stubborn, so this is the last time I remind you. If you insist on tracking it down, then you need to be prepared to bear the consequences."
After the call ended, Lin En stared at the screen with a frown on his face. He knew this wasn't just a threat, but a warning from someone. The power behind this wasn't to be underestimated.
Mark pushed the door open and walked in. After seeing Lynn's expression, he asked, "What happened?"
Lin En put down the phone and briefly told Mark the content of the call. After listening, Mark's face darkened. "It seems that we have affected the interests of certain people. They were able to make Vincent come out of retirement and send people to threaten us. The water behind this is deeper than we imagined."
Lin En nodded, his eyes becoming more resolute. “That’s why we can’t stop. The deeper these people hide, the more they fear the truth being revealed. We must continue.”
Mark gave a wry smile: "Can't you be a little more careful? This isn't an ordinary case."
"I've always been careful," Lin En said calmly, but there was a hint of stubbornness in his eyes. "But there are some things that can't stop us from being careful. This time, their threats only make me more certain that we are on the right path."
Over the next few days, Lynn and Mark intensified their pursuit of Vincent while also increasing their own safety precautions. They located an abandoned warehouse, suspected to be Vincent's temporary base. Lynn decided to lead the team there himself.
That evening, Lynn and Mark led a team to the warehouse's perimeter. Lynn raised his hand, signaling for silence, and then led the way inside. Inside, silence reigned, yet a tense atmosphere hung heavy.
"Someone has been here." Mark whispered, pointing to the fresh shoe prints on the ground.
Lin En nodded and followed the direction of the footprints. Soon, they found a pile of documents and a laptop computer that was still turned on in a hidden corner.
"It looks like we've disturbed something important." Mark muttered and began to check the files and the contents on the computer.
Lin En looked around, a wary eye. He knew the other party might have deliberately left these things as bait, but the clues at this moment were too valuable, so he had to take the risk. The file opened on the computer was an encrypted financial record involving multiple offshore accounts and international transactions. Lin En took a look and said coldly, "These records are enough to expose a huge criminal network."
"Inspector!" Mark suddenly called out in a low voice, "Here's another list with several names on it. They're all people who were related to the Blackwood family back then."
Lynn took the list, his eyes lingering on a few familiar names. His mind quickly connected the findings of the past few days' investigation. These people were likely the key players in the Blackwood family's downfall.
Just as they were about to go deeper, hurried footsteps were heard outside the warehouse. Lin En immediately signaled the team to enter a defensive position and whispered, "They're coming! Be careful!"
A group of heavily armed masked men rushed into the warehouse, pointing their guns at Lynn and his team. Lynn and Mark quickly covered their team members and fought back. The confrontation between the two sides instantly turned the quiet warehouse into a battlefield.
In the chaos, Lynn found an opportunity to put the list and computer into a waterproof bag, and handed it to Mark: "Take it away, this is the most important evidence!"
"What about you?" Mark asked worriedly while fighting back.
"I'll attract their attention." Lin En's eyes were firm. "Let's go! Don't let these things fall into their hands."
Mark gritted his teeth, finally nodded, and evacuated through the back door with the evidence. Meanwhile, Lynn continued to engage the enemy, using his agility to gradually break free from the encirclement and disappear into the night.
After returning to a safe place, Lin En and Mark reunited. Lin En wiped the sweat from his forehead, looked at the waterproof bag in Mark's hand, and breathed a sigh of relief: "These things are enough to tear off their disguise."
Mark nodded, a hint of relief in his tone: "Detective, they did want to stop us, but now, they should be afraid."
It was already late at night when Lin En returned to the FBI branch, but there was no trace of fatigue in his eyes. He walked straight to the command room, quickly dialing several numbers as he walked. The lights in the branch quickly came on, and the agents who received the notice rushed to the scene. For a moment, the entire branch was filled with a tense yet orderly atmosphere.
"Everyone," Lynn said, standing in the center of the command room. His voice was calm but carried undeniable authority. "Tonight's attack was no accident. It was a precise operation targeting our investigation. Their goal is clear: to prevent us from uncovering this conspiracy."
Mark, standing aside, added, "The evidence we have is already deadly enough, but they're clearly organized and well-planned. They won't give up easily."
Lynn nodded, his eyes sweeping over the agents present: "Now it's time for us to fight back. I need an elite team, especially mutant agents, to participate. Their abilities will be key to this operation."
A senior detective asked, "Inspector, what is the specific goal?"
Lin En projected the clues he had just extracted from the warehouse onto the screen, pointed to a marked location, and said, "Through that computer, we've tracked down a possible base. This is their rally point, and it's also our best chance to completely destroy their network."
A mutant agent from the branch stepped forward. He was an electromagnetic controller named Brian, usually responsible for high-risk missions. Brian said with a firm gaze, "Inspector, I request to join the operation."
Lynn looked at him, nodded, and said, "Very good. We need your ability to disrupt their communications and weapons systems. Are there any other agents who would like to volunteer?"
Several mutant and regular agents raised their hands simultaneously. A look of satisfaction crossed Lin En's face. "Very good. The operation is scheduled for one hour. Everyone, prepare your equipment. I don't want to see any mistakes."
In a branch operations meeting room, Lynn and his team quickly formulated a plan of action. He projected a floor plan of the base onto the table and highlighted key areas with a laser pointer. "They may have deployed defenses, but we won't give them a chance to strike back. Brian, you'll be responsible for disabling their communications and disrupting their electronic equipment. Mark, lead your men through the main gate to draw attention. I'll lead another team to flank us, aiming to capture the commander and prioritize securing the scene."
A young mutant agent whispered, "Inspector, the other side may have more people than us. Do we need additional support?"
Lin En shook his head. "Numbers aren't the problem. Our advantage lies in precise deployment and the capabilities of each individual. Remember, our goal isn't a head-on confrontation, but to quickly destroy their ability to act."
After the plan was finalized, everyone quickly began preparations. Lin En changed into tactical gear, with a pistol and communications equipment strapped to his waist. He stood beside the convoy, taking one last look at everyone's equipment and assigned tasks. Once everything was confirmed, he waved his hand and said, "Let's go."
The convoy drove into the night with a clear goal.
When they arrived at their target location, Linn signaled everyone to disembark and began to quietly approach the base. Brian stopped about fifty meters from the base, his hands slightly raised. A faint whirring of electricity filled the air. He whispered, "We've jammed their equipment. Communications and surveillance should be down."
Lin En nodded, then directed the team to disperse and infiltrate. At the main gate, Mark's team quickly broke through the defenses and engaged in a brief firefight with the enemy guards. Meanwhile, Lin En and his flanking team had quietly entered the stronghold.
The guards inside the building were clearly affected by the electromagnetic interference, their reactions were slow, and the accuracy of their weapons was greatly reduced. Lin En led his team forward quickly, quickly locking onto a heavily guarded room.
He gestured, and two agents quickly broke through the door. The enemies inside had no time to react and were subdued. Sitting in the center of the room was a man. It was the target Lynn had been looking for - Vincent Railton.
Vincent raised his head, a hint of sneer in his eyes: "You are really persistent, Inspector."
Lin En walked forward and said in a cold tone, "Vincent, your game is over. All the clues point to you. Now it depends on how much you are willing to cooperate."
Vincent laughed. "You think catching me will solve the problem? You don't even know what you've gotten yourself into."
Lin En was unwavering and said firmly: "Then you might as well tell me, let me know what I have gotten myself into."
He waved his hand, and the detectives behind him quickly handcuffed Vincent and led him out of the room. (End of this chapter)
