Chapter 254 Trying to Save the Situation
Lin En frowned slightly, but continued patiently, "We've checked your confession, and there are many loopholes. You don't even know the details of some of the transactions because you didn't handle them at all. These were all arranged by Coleman, and he just wants you to take the blame."
John looked down at the table and didn't respond.
Lynn sighed, her tone softening. "John, I understand your situation. Your mother is your only relative, and you're willing to do anything for her. There's nothing wrong with that. But have you ever thought about what will happen to her once you're convicted? Coleman is only using money to temporarily solve her medical problems. He doesn't really care about her future."
John's fingers trembled slightly, but he quickly regained his composure. "I know all this. But at least now, she's getting the treatment she needs. I've made my choice."
Lin En looked at him, a hint of helplessness in her eyes. "Do you think your choice is right? If Coleman continues to be at large, he will exploit others and continue to expand his criminal network. And you, by sacrificing yourself, let the real villain escape punishment."
John raised his head, his eyes firm. "Inspector Lynn, I'm not you. I don't have your ability to change the world. I'm just an ordinary person. I can only protect the people I care about. I can't control anything else."
Lynn was silent for a moment. He looked at the exhaustion and despair on John's face and knew that no matter how much he spoke, he would not be able to change his mind. John was ready to sacrifice himself. In his world, he had only one goal: his mother's survival.
"Okay, John." Lynn stood up, a hint of mixed emotions in her tone. "I won't force you to make a decision, but I hope you can remember that your mother needs more than just temporary medical help. She needs a son who is truly free. And Coleman, the man who ruined your life, is not worth any consequences for you."
John lowered his head and did not respond.
Lin En took one last look at him and turned to leave the interrogation room. He walked out the door with a tired look on his face. Mark was waiting outside. When he saw Lin En come out, he asked, "How's it going? Did he let go?"
Lin En shook his head and said in a low voice: "No. He has made up his mind."
Mark sighed: "So what should we do next?"
Lynn said with a deep look in his eyes, "Continue the investigation. Find more evidence from the people around John and Coleman's network. John may be temporarily bound by Coleman's money and emotions, but as long as we tear apart this web of disguise, he will see the truth sooner or later."
Mark nodded. "Understood, Inspector. We're not giving up."
Lin En looked into the distance, a look of determination flashing in his eyes.
Lynn sat in his office late at night, his computer screen lit with details about Coleman's latest real estate project. He hadn't slept for hours, but fatigue hadn't slowed his focus.
This project was a high-end residential development that Coleman had recently handed over, located on a valuable piece of land in the city center. Lynn discovered from public transaction records that the source of funds for the purchase of this land was unclear. It appeared to be fully purchased by a newly established investment company, but the company's background raised many questions.
"Mark," Lynn pressed the communicator, a hint of excitement in his tone, "Come here immediately, I found something important."
A few minutes later, Mark walked in with a cup of coffee in his hand. Looking at Lynn's expression, he knew the inspector had found another important clue. "What's going on?"
Lin En pointed to the content on the screen and said, "This real estate project is Coleman's first major transaction after his release. Did you notice this investment company?"
Mark leaned over to investigate. "Berlin Capital Management, established just three months ago, is registered in a tax haven. So, this company is Coleman's money cover?"
"It's very likely." Lin En nodded. "More importantly, this company's account recently received a huge inflow of funds to pay for this piece of land. I checked the source of this money and found that the funds were dispersed into multiple small accounts and then concentrated into Berlin Capital's account through complex transactions."
Mark frowned: "Sounds like a classic money laundering method."
"That's right." Lynn's eyes were sharp. "And I also discovered something. Among these small accounts, the registered owner of one account is a distant relative of Coleman, which means he is the one operating these accounts behind the scenes."
Mark pondered for a moment and asked, "So what should we do next? This clue is enough to prove that he was involved in the flow of illegal funds, but we need more concrete evidence to trace the true source of these funds."
Lin En opened a document and pointed at the data on it. "The bank system involved in this transaction has records. We need to obtain detailed transfer records for these accounts and find the actual person in charge of Berlin Capital. If we can prove that this company is controlled by Coleman, we can make him guilty."
Mark nodded: "I understand. I will contact the relevant departments immediately to apply for the retrieval of records."
A few hours later, the financial analysis team reported that they had obtained some account transaction records from the bank and found something unusual.
"Inspector," a financial analyst pushed the door open and walked in, handing Lynn a printed document. "Several fund flows in these accounts are related to a well-known charitable foundation. But strangely, these funds did not go into the foundation's main account, but into a private account."
Lin En looked at the document with a sneer in his eyes. "Charitable foundation? Coleman really knows how to play it. This kind of cover is the most confusing, but it's also the easiest to expose."
He closed the file and said firmly, "Contact the head of this foundation immediately and investigate the whereabouts of these funds. Coleman is clearly trying to conceal his illegal income in this way, but we have begun to tear off his disguise."
At the same time, Lynn decided to personally lead the team to the registered address of Berlin Capital to try to find more clues. He knew that the secrets hidden behind this real estate transaction might be the key to completely defeating Coleman.
"Mark, get everything ready," Lynn said, standing up and putting on his coat. "This time, we're going to make sure Coleman has nowhere to hide." Lynn and his team quickly rushed to Berlin Capital's registered address. It was a nondescript office building on a busy street in the city center. From the outside, it looked like an ordinary business building, with not even a sign on the entrance. Lynn was wary; such places were often a favorite tactic of shell companies.
"Inspector, this place doesn't look like a real office." Mark stood aside and whispered, "It's probably just a registered address."
Lin En nodded and signaled the team to begin the search. They entered the building and found the floor where Berlin Capital was registered, but discovered that the entire floor consisted of only a small office with a simple plaque on the door that read "Berlin Capital Management Company."
The door was gently pushed open, revealing the empty office, with only a few shabby desks and chairs and a dusty filing cabinet. Lynn's eyes quickly scanned the room, directing the technicians to check the computers and filing cabinets while he personally flipped through several documents on the desk.
"This place is really an empty shell." Mark walked over to Lynn and whispered, "There's no sign of any substantial operation."
"Don't worry." Lin En continued to search and soon found a stack of documents in a hidden compartment of the filing cabinet. He flipped through them quickly, his expression gradually becoming solemn.
"These are their financial records," Lynn whispered. "Although they appear ordinary on the surface, several large transfers match the fund flows we're tracking."
"Detective!" a technician's voice came from the other side of the room. "There's a computer here, but it looks like it's been wiped. We might have to spend some time recovering the data."
Lin En walked over and looked at the old computer, frowning slightly. "Try your best to recover the data. This computer is likely to store the connection between Coleman and this company."
After a few hours, technicians successfully recovered some of the hard drive data and discovered some hidden emails and documents.
"Inspector, we've found some key documents." The technician handed Lin En a printed email record. "These emails show that Berlin Capital's capital flows were directly directed. The anonymous account used by the sender has been technically traced to Coleman's private communication device."
Lin En looked at the documents with a sneer on his face. "This is interesting. He used an anonymous account to try to hide his relationship with this company, but he didn't expect us to dig it out."
Mark looked at the email records and asked, "Is this enough to convict him?"
"That's not enough." Lin En put the documents away and said calmly, "We need more evidence, especially detailed transaction records of those private accounts. If we can prove that these funds came from illegal channels and eventually flowed into Coleman's real estate projects, then he's finished."
Lynn immediately contacted the financial analysis team and asked them to further track these accounts and personally review the foundation's fund flows. A few hours later, the team reported new findings.
"Detective," an analyst said excitedly, "we discovered that Coleman dispersed funds into multiple sub-accounts through the foundation's private account. One of these sub-accounts directly paid for the initial investment in the real estate project. These records are very clear and sufficient to prove that the source of his funds was illegal."
Lynn looked at the records, his eyes flashing with determination. "Excellent! This is the irrefutable evidence we need. Collect all the information immediately and submit it to the prosecutor. Coleman's game is over."
A few days later, Lynn led his team into the detention center again, this time with evidence that would leave Coleman with nowhere to escape. When Coleman saw Lynn again, the sneer on his face could no longer conceal his nervousness.
"Coleman, this time, your empire is truly about to collapse," Lynn said coldly, throwing the documents in his hand on the table. "These evidences not only prove that you are laundering money, but also involved in multiple illegal transactions. What else do you have to say now?"
Coleman looked at the documents, his expression gradually darkening, but he remained composed. "Inspector Lynn, I admit you're capable, but there are no permanent winners in this world. Do you think these things can bring me down?"
Lynn looked straight at him, her tone firm: "No, this is not what I thought, but the fact you must face. Justice may be late, but it will never be absent. And you, Coleman, no longer have a chance."
The next morning, as Lin En entered his office, he saw his superior, Charles Harrison, standing by the window. He looked calm, yet a subtle unease lingered. Lin En placed the documents on the table and glared at Harrison. "Director, you're here so early. I'm afraid you're not here just to cheer me up, are you?"
Harrison turned around, gave a forced smile, and said in a deliberately relaxed tone: "Lynn, I came here to talk to you about Coleman's case."
Lin En smiled coldly, sat on the chair, leaned forward slightly, and crossed his hands on the table: "What are you talking about? Make me give up?"
Harrison sighed, his tone persuading him, "Lynn, you're an excellent detective, but you have to understand that some things can't be decided simply by right or wrong. Coleman's network is too vast, and the chain of interests involved is too extensive. Once fully uncovered, it could lead to many uncontrollable consequences."
Lin En's eyes suddenly turned cold. He stood up, placed his hands on the table, and looked directly at Harrison. "Uncontrollable consequences? Director, that doesn't sound like you're concerned about justice. It sounds like you're afraid of infringing on certain people's interests."
Harrison felt a little uncomfortable under Lynn's gaze, and his tone rose slightly: "Lynn, this is not a problem you can solve alone. I am protecting you and the agency. Coleman has a complicated background, and his legal team is already putting pressure on us. We can't let this matter escalate any further."
Lynn didn't move, only staring at him coldly, his gaze sharp as a blade. After a moment, his voice was low and firm: "Chief, I never care about the complexity of the case, nor do I care about how much pressure is applied. I only care about one thing - justice. This is my duty and my bottom line. If anyone tries to make me give up, I will regard him as the same kind of person as Coleman."
Harrison's face turned awkward, and he tried to save the situation: "Lynn, I'm not threatening you, I'm just giving you some advice—"
"Are you suggesting I violate my duties?" Lynn interrupted him, his tone tinged with cold anger. "Commander, I respect you, but if you're here to lobby for Coleman, I suggest you leave immediately. I won't compromise, and I won't stop."
Harrison felt guilty under Lynn's gaze. His Adam's apple moved up and down, and finally he sighed and raised his hands. "Okay, Lynn, I admit that I did talk too much. However, I still remind you that it's better to be careful." (End of this chapter)
