Chapter 255: Destined to Return in vain
Lynn didn't respond, but stood up straight, his eyes like a cold statue, watching Harrison walk out of the office. He knew that this struggle was not just a contest between law and crime, but also a collision between justice and compromise.
When the door closed, Mark walked in, looked at Lin En's expression, and asked in a low voice: "What is the director's plan now?"
Lynn smiled coldly, with a hint of sarcasm in his tone: "He wants me to give up Coleman's case."
Mark raised an eyebrow: "How do you deal with it?"
"It's simple." Lin En looked at the documents on the table, a firm look in his eyes. "I told him that justice is not a bargaining chip. Now he knows he shouldn't come to me again."
Mark sat across from Lynn, his eyes determined, his tone filled with the passion of a young man: "Inspector, I've learned a lot from you. Facing people like Coleman, facing pressure from your superiors, you never backed down. I also want to be like you, always fearless of power and uphold justice."
Lynn raised his head and looked at Mark, a faint smile on his lips, but then his tone turned serious: "Mark, it's right to uphold justice, but there is one thing you must remember. Facing power, it takes more than courage and determination. You need strength, enough strength to leave those who try to oppress you helpless."
Mark frowned, a little puzzled: "Strength? Does it mean power or ability?"
"All of that," Lynn said calmly. "You need to make yourself irreplaceable. Whether it's your professional skills, analytical ability, or judgment, you need to reach a level that cannot be ignored. Only when you are strong enough can you truly be fearless in the face of power."
Mark nodded thoughtfully: "But what if the strength is not enough? Do we have to compromise?"
Lin En smiled slightly, a hint of mixed emotions in her tone. "Sometimes, compromise isn't cowardice, but a strategy. If the choice you face is between justice and self-destruction, then a moderate compromise can buy you more time and opportunities, allowing you to continue fighting."
Mark whispered, "Inspector, have you ever had a time like this? Choosing self-preservation instead of direct confrontation?"
Lin En was silent for a moment, his eyes growing deep. "Of course. When I first started, I encountered people who were even tougher than Coleman. Back then, I wasn't strong enough, and I didn't have the resources I have now. If I had chosen to confront them head-on, I would have been kicked out long ago, or even worse. So, I learned patience, learned to accumulate strength, and then strike back at the right time."
Mark nodded thoughtfully: "I see...So, when facing power, true wisdom is knowing when to persist and when to step back?"
"That's right." Lin En nodded, a hint of seriousness in his tone. "Justice is not a sprint, but a marathon. You need enough endurance and wisdom to reach the end. Remember, protecting yourself is not cowardice, but a way to protect justice longer-term."
Mark's eyes gradually became firm. "Thank you, Inspector. I understand. In the pursuit of justice, I will do my best to improve myself and become stronger. I will also learn to find strategies when necessary."
Lin En smiled with satisfaction: "Very good, Mark. If you can understand this, then in the future, you will definitely do better than me."
The two men stared at each other for a moment, and the atmosphere in the office grew more relaxed. Mark raised his coffee cup and said cheerfully, "Then I toast to the Inspector, and to our future."
Lin En also picked up his coffee and clinked it lightly: "A toast to justice, and to our persistence."
The next day, the courtroom was packed. Lynn and Mark sat in the plaintiff's seat, their gazes fixed firmly on the front. Coleman was brought into the courtroom. His face was devoid of its former arrogance, replaced by a tense expression and evident fatigue. His legal team, while maintaining composure, held a glint of resignation in their eyes, clearly realizing the situation was hopeless.
The judge cleared his throat and announced the start of the trial: "After the jury's deliberations, this court now announces the final verdict for the defendant Alan Coleman."
The entire courtroom was silent and everyone held their breath.
"Defendant Alan Coleman was charged with multiple crimes, including money laundering, illegal transactions, and hiring a killer. Based on the solid evidence presented by the prosecution, this court found the defendant guilty of all charges and sentenced him to 20 years in prison and a substantial fine."
Coleman's face turned pale. The lawyer behind him tried to stand up to protest, but the judge's gavel interrupted them: "The trial is over!"
A murmur of discussion erupted at the scene. Lynn and Mark looked at each other, a smile of relief on their faces. This long battle had finally reached its moment of victory.
When I walked out of the courtroom, Kate was already waiting at the door. She excitedly waved her recorder and said, "Lynn, Mark! I just heard the verdict! This is a big win!"
Lynn smiled slightly, with a hint of relief in his tone: "This is not my victory, it is a victory for justice. Coleman's crimes have finally been brought to justice, which means that more people have received the justice they deserve."
Mark interjected, "But Inspector, you should also admit that this victory would not have been possible without you."
Kate nodded in agreement. "That's right, Lynn. You're the center of attention in this courtroom today. I saw the jurors nodding their heads almost throughout your statement."
Lin En smiled and didn't respond, but there was a hint of pride and relief in his eyes.
That night, at Kate's suggestion, the three of them gathered in a quiet little restaurant and held a small celebration party for the victory.
Kate raised her glass and spoke first: "Today, this glass is for Lynn. Without you, this case would never have had this outcome."
Lynn raised her glass in response and smiled calmly, "Cheers to you too, Mark and Kate. Without your support along the way, I wouldn't have been able to persevere until now."
Mark raised his glass, his tone joking: "Well, then I have to toast myself. After all, I was the one who shared the pressure with the inspector throughout this whole process."
All three of them laughed and drank the wine in their glasses.
Kate put down her glass, a look of emotion in her eyes: "Lynn, do you really know how special you are? In the face of so much pressure, you still insist on justice. Even my article can't fully describe your tenacity."
Lynn shook her head, her eyes softening. "Kate, justice doesn't belong to me, but to everyone who upholds it. Today's victory is a team victory, the result of everyone's efforts." Mark patted Lynn's shoulder. "You're too modest, Inspector. No matter what, you are our role model."
As the night deepened, the three of them concluded their celebration banquet amidst laughter and joy. As they left the restaurant, the night breeze blew gently, and the city lights illuminated the distant sky. Lin En stood by the street, gazing at the brightly lit streets with a deep gaze.
Kate stood aside, looking at Lynn, and whispered, "Lynn, this victory is just the beginning, right?"
Lynn nodded, her eyes firm. "Yes, Kate. This is not the end, but the starting point for continuing to defend justice."
The next day, the sun was shining brightly as Lynn and Mark walked along the busy streets of Manhattan, conducting their routine maintenance patrol. The clamor of the streets was mingled with the chatter of pedestrians. Lynn observed the surroundings as he walked, while Mark chatted with some of the vendors.
Mark stopped at a food stall to buy a cup of coffee and casually asked the stall owner, "How's it going lately? Is the neighborhood peaceful?"
The stall owner handed over the coffee and whispered, "Oh, officer, things are not going well lately. Have you heard? There's a thief who calls himself 'Spider-Man' who specializes in stealing from rich people. He's as fast as lightning and no one can catch him."
Mark raised an eyebrow and looked back at Lynn: "Inspector, did you hear that? 'Spider-Man', that sounds a bit funny."
Lin En paused, his eyes narrowed slightly. "Go on. What's so special about this 'Spider-Man'?"
The stall owner lowered his voice, glanced around, and whispered, "It's said this guy has amazing skills. He can leap between tall buildings and trap people with some kind of sticky substance. Some say he's a mutant, while others say he uses some kind of high-tech equipment. Anyway, he's been making a few big bucks lately, all on wealthy people. He sounds like a chivalrous thief."
Mark frowned. "A righteous thief? Such people are usually just criminals in disguise."
Lynn nodded in agreement, but said calmly, "Whatever his motives, breaking the law is breaking the law. We need to find out the true identity of this 'Spider-Man'."
The two continued patrolling along the streets, and Lynn paid attention to people's conversations and clues on the streets. He knew that there was no shortage of strange stories in the city of Manhattan, but behind any rumor there might be a bigger secret.
Not long after, they passed a jewelry store and saw the owner standing at the door, complaining to a customer, "This 'Spider-Man' is so despicable! He stole a rare ruby worth a million dollars from our store last night! The police still haven't found any clues."
Lin En stopped, walked over and asked, "Can you tell me more details? For example, how did he get into the store and how did he leave?"
The shop owner recognized Lin En as an FBI agent and immediately showed a glimmer of hope: "Detective, last night's surveillance showed that he fell from the ceiling like a spider. Then, he used some strange slime to break the safe and stole the ruby. When he left, he simply climbed the wall and ran away!"
Mark frowned and looked at Lynn: "Sounds like a high-tech crime."
Lynn nodded. "Or maybe it's some kind of mutant ability. In any case, this is no ordinary thief."
He pulled out his notebook and wrote down the details provided by the shop owner. He also inquired about the security footage. The shop owner immediately handed it to Lynn. In the video, a figure in black and red clothing moved effortlessly across the ceiling, his movements as fluid as a natural crawler. After quickly destroying the safe, he disappeared into the night with the ruby.
Mark exclaimed: "This guy is really fast, and he climbed down from the ceiling... A normal person can't do that."
Lin En turned off the video and thought for a moment. "Let's send this video back to the bureau first and have the technical team analyze it. At the same time, let's see if there are any similar cases that can be linked to it."
"Inspector," Mark said jokingly, "Do you think this 'Spider-Man' is some kind of chivalrous thief with an overwhelming sense of justice?"
Lin En gave him a cold look, his tone leaving no room for doubt: "No matter what his motive was, he stole someone else's legal property, which is a crime. What we need to do is bring him to justice."
The two continued their patrol, but Lynn's mind kept replaying the surveillance footage.
After returning to his office, Lynn replayed the video, carefully observing every detail. The Spider-Man on the screen was incredibly agile, climbing effortlessly between the ceiling and walls. His black and red costume fit snugly, yet was simple in design, lacking any iconic symbols.
"Mark," Lynn said, pointing at the screen, "Did you see that? This so-called 'Spider-Man' is obviously not the same Spider-Man we know."
Mark leaned closer to the screen and frowned. "Indeed. His equipment looks crude, and his behavior is even more cold and cruel, not heroic at all. The slime he uses doesn't look like ordinary technology, it's more like a mutant ability."
"That's right." Lynn nodded. "If he really is a mutant, then his goals and motives may be more complicated than we expected. We can't wait for him to commit another crime. We must take the initiative."
That night, Lynn and Mark drove to areas where Spider-Man might be active. They chose several blocks with tall buildings, which were both high-incidence areas for crime and the easiest places for Spider-Man to hide.
The two sat in an inconspicuous car. Lynn's eyes were fixed on the movements on the street, and reports from other patrol officers came from the communication channel through the headset.
"Inspector," Mark said, yawning. "If this guy is smart, he'll probably hold his ground tonight. He's committed so many successful crimes, he obviously knows how to hide himself."
Lin En didn't look away, and said in a low voice, "Perhaps he will, but we can't have any luck. The more cunning the opponent, the more time we need to wait."
As the night passed, the hustle and bustle of the city gradually subsided. As the sky began to light up, Lin En finally put away his telescope and rubbed his tired brow. "It seems we're destined to return empty-handed tonight."
Mark sighed: "Detective, maybe he really is hiding. Why don't we go back to the station and analyze his crime patterns to see if there are any clues we've missed."
Lynn nodded in agreement, and the two drove back to the police station. On the way, Lynn's mind was still replaying the surveillance footage. He knew that this "Spider-Man" was not just an ordinary thief. His abilities, motives, and the possibility of being a mutant made the case even more complicated. (End of this chapter)
