Henry was silent for a while, as if he was sorting out his thoughts, and then he whispered, "Alan's parents are ordinary people. They love him and care about him, but one day three years ago, they suddenly didn't come home. Since then, there has been no news from them."

Lin En frowned and asked, "Have you called the police?"

"Of course we called the police," Henry said helplessly. "But they couldn't find any leads. Their phones and credit cards hadn't been used. It was as if they had vanished from the face of the earth."

Lynn nodded. This was clearly a missing person case with many suspicious circumstances. "What about Alan? Did he know about this at the time?"

"He was still young, so we didn't tell him the truth. We just said his parents went to work far away." Henry sighed, "But he's a smart kid, and he slowly began to realize they wouldn't come back. Since then, he's become more and more withdrawn."

Lin En's heart was heavy. Looking at Henry's tired face, he could sense the hardship the old man had gone through in raising Allen alone, as well as his endless worry about the whereabouts of his children.

"Mr. Henry, if you allow me, I would like to reinvestigate this matter." Lynn's tone was serious. "Perhaps I can find some new clues to help you solve this mystery."

Henry looked at Lynn, his eyes showing a complex mixture of hope and doubt: "Is it really possible? It's been three years, and we almost gave up..."

"I can't guarantee that I can find the answer, but I will try my best," Lynn said firmly.

Henry was silent for a while, and finally nodded: "Okay, I'll give you all the information from that year. Thank you, Lin En."

Lynn took a stack of old police reports and some family documents from Henry, said goodbye to Henry, and immediately began to study the materials after returning to his office.

The missing person report indicated that Allen's parents, Katherine and George Miller, were traveling to a friend's dinner party but never reached their destination. Police found their vehicle on surveillance cameras along the way, but it disappeared after a remote road, seemingly deliberately avoiding all surveillance.

"Deliberately avoiding surveillance..." Lin En muttered to himself, feeling vaguely that this was not an ordinary missing case.

He handed the report to the technical team and asked them to re-check the surveillance records at the time and look for any overlooked clues. At the same time, he began to investigate the life backgrounds of Catherine and George, trying to find possible motives.

A few days later, the technical team reported back an important discovery: near the road where the vehicle disappeared, a car appeared repeatedly in the surveillance video, and the owner's information showed that it was a private security company. This company was involved in some gray transactions, but it had never been convicted.

Lin En took a deep breath. He vaguely felt that this missing case might have deeper implications.

Through further investigation, Lin En discovered that this private security company had recently had financial dealings with a biotechnology company, and this company's research area happened to involve genetic experiments on mutants.

"Another genetic experiment..." Lin En clenched his fist unconsciously. It was obvious that this clue had some connection with the experimental organization investigated before.

Lin En contacted several reliable agents and decided to go to the security company to investigate in person. Outside the company, he and the agents disguised themselves as ordinary customers and contacted the person in charge under the guise of consulting services.

During the conversation, Lynn noticed that the person in charge mentioned a remote "training base" that the company used for "special missions." This place was obviously related to the disappearance of Catherine and George.

That night, Lin En led his team to the "training base." They found strict defense measures on the periphery, but successfully infiltrated after careful deployment.

Inside the base, an administrator was captured and, under Lynn's questioning, finally confessed the truth: Catherine and George had inadvertently learned some secrets of the genetic experiment and became the target of the experimental organization. They were captured here, forced to participate in the experiment, and then transferred to another location.

"So where are they now?" Lynn asked.

The administrator's face was pale, and his voice was trembling: "I don't know... They were sent to a higher-level facility. I'm only responsible for basic security..."

Although he didn't find Allen's parents directly, Lin En knew that he was close to the truth. He gathered all the information and contacted his superiors, requesting to expand the scope of the investigation and track down the remaining forces involved in the genetic experiment.

Lin En compiled all the investigative materials into a detailed report and submitted it to his superiors, hoping to mobilize more resources to track down the whereabouts of Allen's parents. However, a few days later, he was summoned to his superior's office, but the documents in front of him were pushed back on the table by his superiors.

"Lynn, I understand your passion and your desire to help this family find answers." The superior's tone didn't sound harsh, but the refusal in his words was clear. "But it's been three years since this happened, and there's not enough evidence to prove this is a worthwhile case."

Lin En took a deep breath and tried to refute calmly, "Sir, the connection we found between the security company and the genetic experiment organization, as well as this 'training base', all indicate that their disappearance is not an ordinary case. This clue may be related to more criminal activities."

The superior shook his head and said, "The possibility is not enough to support us mobilizing large-scale resources to investigate. Moreover, the last genetic experiment operation has already consumed a lot of manpower. We can't invest too much in similar cases. I'm sorry, Lin En, but you have to let this case go."

Lynn was silent for a moment, knowing that arguing further would be pointless. He nodded and put the document back into his folder. "Understood, sir."

After leaving the office, Lin En's hands unconsciously clenched the folder. He wasn't calm, but neither was he angry, but rather a deeper determination. No matter what, he couldn't let this case go unpunished, and seeing Allen's eyes, he became even more determined.

Back in his office, Lynn sat at his desk, looking through the documents, trying to find a breakthrough from the existing information. Not long after, Mark pushed the door open, a hint of uneasiness on his face.

"I heard." Mark closed the door and sat down opposite Lynn. "The higher-ups don't approve of continuing the investigation, right?"

Lynn nodded and pushed the folder aside. "Yes. They didn't think the case was worth the resources."

Mark looked at him, thinking for a moment, and suddenly said, "Detective, I can help you. It's just the two of us. Although we don't have all the resources, we can try our best."

Lynn looked up, a hint of surprise in her eyes: "Mark, this matter may get you into trouble. After all, this is no longer within our jurisdiction."

Mark gave a determined smile. "What's the big deal about trouble? You always taught us that justice shouldn't be compromised because of difficulties. Since you're not going to give up, neither am I."

Lin En raised the corner of his mouth with a slight smile: "Okay, since you are willing, let's do it together."

The two reorganized the information and began to investigate the list of personnel related to the security company and the "training base". They found that the company had employed several individuals with ties to the experimental organization, and one of them had recently appeared near Manhattan.

"This is a breakthrough," Lynn said, pointing to a document. "This person's name is Eric Dunn. He used to be the logistics director of the experimental organization. He may know more clues about the whereabouts of Katherine and George." "Then what are we waiting for?" Mark stood up and grabbed his coat. "Let's go find him."

Following the clues, the two found Eric's address, a dilapidated apartment building in Manhattan. Lynn and Mark pretended to be ordinary detectives and knocked on his door under the pretext of a routine investigation.

Eric obviously didn't expect anyone to come to his door. When he saw the two people, his expression became nervous for a moment, but he quickly regained his composure: "Agents, what's going on?"

"We have some questions about your past employment record that need to be confirmed." Lynn's tone was calm, but his eyes were as sharp as a knife. "Excuse me, did you handle any matters for 'Katherine and George Miller' three years ago?"

Eric's expression changed instantly, but he tried to hide it, pretending to be confused: "Mr. and Mrs. Miller? No, I don't remember that name."

Lin En sneered, his eyes still fixed on him: "Are you sure you don't remember? Or, you don't want to remember?"

Eric was forced to take a step back, his eyes flickering: "I...I don't know what you are talking about."

Mark suddenly stepped forward and pressed him with his shoulder. "Stop pretending, Dunn. We know you have a connection with the experimental organization and that you were involved in the 'training base' operation of that security company. You'd better cooperate now, otherwise we have plenty of ways to make you talk."

A layer of cold sweat broke out on Eric's forehead. He hesitated for a moment, and finally said in a collapsed tone: "Okay, okay! I do know something, but I'm only responsible for transportation. I don't do anything else."

"Then tell me everything you know." Lynn's tone was as cold as ice.

Eric swallowed and spoke haltingly, "That couple... they were sent to a more secret experimental base. I was responsible for arranging the vehicle... but I don't know the exact address. I only know that the base's code name is 'Daedalus' and it's far away from the city."

"Daedalus?" Lynn quickly wrote down the name. "And who's in charge of this base?"

"I really don't know! They never let me get involved in core affairs." Eric almost cried, "I've told you everything I know!"

Lynn looked at him coldly for a moment, then said to Mark, "Take this information back and continue looking for clues about Daedalus."

Eric slumped in his chair and watched Lynn and Mark leave. Lynn knew that things were beginning to get better, but there was still a long way to go before the truth was revealed.

After returning to the office, Lynn and Mark entered the code name "Daedalus" into the database. After several hours of searching, they found that this seemed to be an independent facility with only a weak connection with other bases of the experimental organization.

"This might be their most secret place," Lynn mused, "We must find its exact location."

Mark nodded and said firmly: "Inspector, we have come this far. We can't stop no matter what."

Night fell over the security company's training base. Silence reigned, save for the occasional patrol light. Lynn and Mark, along with a small team, hid behind an abandoned bush, keeping a close eye on the base's entrance.

"The target has been confirmed. There are two guards at the main gate, and at least two surveillance vehicles are patrolling the periphery." Mark reported in a low voice through the night vision binoculars.

Lin En nodded and whispered, "We'll split into two groups. The main attack group will attract attention from the front, while the infiltration group will sneak in from the back. We must act quickly and make sure not to alert the enemy."

The team quickly split into two groups. Lynn led the infiltration team around the side of the base. They moved along the wall, avoiding the surveillance cameras, and quickly found the entrance to a ventilation duct. Mark led the main attack team, making a slight noise at the main gate to attract the guards' attention and buy Lynn some time.

"Are the cutting tools ready?" Lynn looked at a team member.

The team nodded, pulled out a portable cutter, and silently cut open the ventilation duct's grille. Lynn led the way, crawling into the duct, followed closely by the infiltration team. Silence reigned within the base, broken only by the occasional sound of footsteps in the distance.

At the end of the ventilation duct was a storage room. Lynn opened the grille and carefully poked his head out. After confirming it was safe, he jumped down with his team.

"This should be the supply storage area." Mark's voice came through the headset. "We are distracting the outer patrol. You have ten minutes."

Lin En signaled the team to disperse and search, and soon found some important-looking files among a pile of filing cabinets. He flipped through a few pages, frowning slightly. "These files mention 'Daedalus' and experimental data, but there's no specific location."

"Keep searching," he whispered.

The team members acted quickly and collected all the documents and electronic devices in the storage room. At this moment, the footsteps outside suddenly became heavier, and it seemed that someone was approaching the storage room.

"Someone is coming." A team member whispered a reminder.

Lynn quickly ordered his team members to hide in the dark, while he himself hid behind the door, tightly gripping the pistol in his hand.

The door was pushed open, and two armed guards walked in. They glanced around, and one of them frowned and said, "I just heard some noise over here, let's check it out."

Just as one of them walked to the filing cabinet, Lynn suddenly flashed out from behind the door and hit him in the back of the neck with the butt of the gun. Another team member quickly subdued the other guard before the two even had time to sound the alarm.

"Clean up the scene." Lynn whispered.

They dragged the guard aside, closed the door again, and continued searching for the documents.

A few minutes later, Mark's voice came through the headset again: "The guards at the main gate have changed shifts, but we don't have much time to attract attention. You have to speed up."

"I understand." Lynn quickly flipped through the documents and finally found some key information in a file: "Katherine and George Miller... were marked as 'experimental subjects'... and transferred to Daedalus Base for 'genetic ability testing'." (End of this chapter)
