Chapter 49 Status
Coming out of the clothing store, Su Yaoguang noticed that Zhang Zhaodi hadn't spoken a word, so she turned around and looked at her: "Mom, you must be hungry. Let's find a place to eat something first."

Zhang Zhaodi came back to her senses and said, "I'm not hungry. We still need to buy things for Wangshu. Let's buy them and send them to him first, so that he won't be left wanting in the academy and be looked down upon by others."

"That won't be a big deal." Su Yaoguang pulled Zhang Zhaodi to sit down in front of the wonton stall. "Boss, two bowls of mutton wontons, please."

"One bowl of mutton wontons, one bowl of vegetarian wontons." Zhang Zhaodi said, "I don't like mutton, I only like vegetarian ones."

"Mom, you're lying. You haven't even eaten mutton wontons, so how do you know they're not tasty? If you don't want to eat with me, I'll eat vegetarian wontons too." Su Yaoguang said as she was about to call the boss.

Zhang Zhaodi had no choice but to compromise: "Okay, okay, mutton wontons."

While waiting for the wontons to arrive, Su Yaoguang looked around, her eyes full of curiosity. Until this moment, she looked like a fifteen-year-old girl, full of interest in everything.

"My daughter, I've been traveling a lot these past few years. Sometimes I'm gone for days at a time, sometimes even a month or two. It must be very hard for you when I'm not around, right?"

"Mom, what's wrong with you?"

"Just now, I saw you skillfully altering clothes, and suddenly I realized that you have learned so many things in places where I can't see. I am not a good mother and I have made you suffer."

"Oh, Mom, you were silent just now. I thought I had done something wrong to make you angry! Mom, I'm grown up now and can protect you. When we were little, you were my sky and my support. Now you can try to rely on your daughter. You raised me and I will take care of you in your old age. Isn't this what I should do? You can't treat me like a child."

The boss brought the wontons over and said with a smile, "You two have such a wonderful relationship. We outsiders are really envious! My dear guests, enjoy your meal."

Zhang Zhaodi felt a lump in her throat. She had always disliked corny talk and was not used to hearing nice things. At this moment, she felt very embarrassed.

"It's delicious," Zhang Zhaodi said. "Thanks to my daughter, I can also eat mutton wontons."

After eating wontons, Su Yaoguang continued to buy food for Zhou Wangshu.

First came clothes, shoes and socks, then pens, ink, paper and inkstone, and then daily necessities.

Because there were so many things, Su Yaoguang even asked a clerk to help deliver them. She gave him three cents for the journey, and the clerk was happy to do it for them.

"Mom is waiting for you at the door." Zhang Zhaodi said, "Just come out after you deliver the things."

Su Yaoguang came in with his servants.

The old slave guarding the gate went in first to report and only let them in after getting the approval of the teacher inside.

It was noon, the perfect time for a rest after lunch. The teacher had just arranged a room for Zhou Wangshu, so Zhou Wangshu was packing his things in his bedroom.

"Zhou Wangshu, your family is looking for you."

Chen Buyu stuck his head out and looked outside: "Wangshu, who's here? Come and see?"

Zhou Wangshu guessed who the visitor was. He walked out the door and saw Su Yaoguang approaching with her servant. She was carrying a large bundle, while the servant was carrying a heavy load.

"Wangshu, my mother and I bought you some clothes and daily necessities. Is this your room? Then I'll let my second brother take them in directly." Chen Buyu looked at Su Yaoguang.

The little girl was tiny and so thin that it felt like one hand could lift her. Her hair was dry and yellow, and her complexion was a bit sallow. Her features were nice, small and delicate, but they could only be described as delicate. He was used to seeing beautiful women; the girls in his family were prettier than her. However, her eyes were very bright and lively, as if they could glow, making her look very energetic. When she smiled, she was bright and sunny, which made people feel good.

"Hello, I am Wangshu's classmate and also his roommate. My name is Chen Buyu." Chen Buyu took the initiative to greet him.

Su Yaoguang smiled and said, "Hello, my name is Su Yaoguang, and I'm Wangshu's sister. Please take good care of my brother from now on."

"Sister?" Chen Buyu was surprised. He glanced at Zhou Wangshu, touched his head, and said, "I have a question I'm very curious about. Can I ask it?"

"You have nothing to do?" Zhou Wangshu looked at Chen Buyu unhappily.

"Oh, what could be going on in the middle of the day? Sister Su and I are like old friends, meeting for the first time. Let me chat with her for a few minutes." Chen Buyu was very familiar. He climbed out the window and asked curiously, "Some people say that Wangshu is a live-in son-in-law bought by someone for ten cents. Isn't that you?"

Su Yaoguang frowned: "Who said that?"

"That person is right," Zhou Wangshu said. "It's nothing to worry about."

"What's wrong with that? You're my brother, and you're a free man." Su Yaoguang said unhappily, "How come the students in this academy are just like the gossipy women in the market, not focusing on their own studies all day long, but instead keeping an eye on other people's family affairs? Wangshu, you better stay away from people like that, and don't do anything to gain fame and reputation."

"I will."

Chen Buyu chuckled and said, "Sister Su, I'm just curious. I wouldn't say that. Don't worry, Wangshu is my brother. I will definitely take good care of him."

"Our Wangshu is an honest man, soft-hearted, timid, and has suffered a lot. Chen Xuezi, please take care of him." Su Yaoguang said.

Su Yaoguang laid out the newly bought bedding for Zhou Wangshu, and then took out the newly bought clothes, shoes, socks, and four treasures of the study. She gave him careful instructions, nagging like a little old woman.

"My mother and I often go to the city to sell rouge and powder. You know the place, it's still there. We sold better today than last time. But Sister Chun'e asked about you, saying why you didn't bring such a beautiful sister here to attract business." Su Yaoguang laughed. "After setting up the stall, many people really asked about you. Fortunately, you didn't go. Otherwise, I'm afraid that a matchmaker would come to propose marriage in a few days. How could I find a beautiful sister for them then?"

Su Yaoguang placed the hot roast duck on the table and said, "Share it with your friends! By the way, bring this with you. Buy whatever you want to eat. Don't starve yourself."

Su Yaoguang first gave him a bag of money containing three hundred coins. She looked at Zhou Wangshu's frail appearance and added another hundred coins.

Zhou Wangshu held the purse, his eyes filled with turbulent thoughts.

Why are you so nice to him?

If she had initially bought him for ten cents to understand her own predicament, now that her game was solved, he was no longer much of a pawn. He was already grateful that they were willing to send him to school, and there was no need for him to be so kind. He understood the family's poverty and knew what this bag of money meant to them. It was precisely because of this understanding that he thought the mother and daughter were particularly foolish.

"Mom is waiting for me at the door. I'm going now." Su Yaoguang said with a smile, "Wangshu, study hard and don't be lazy!"
