Chapter 209 Dreams Come True Are No Longer Out of Reach
"boom!"
Justin was suddenly interrupted from his deep thoughts by a gunshot. He rushed to the window and saw a ragged middle-aged man running forward with a loaf of bread in his hand, being chased by four or five policemen with pistols in hand.
A shot was fired! Justin was startled; the middle-aged man was immediately shot and fell to the ground. The incident occurred not far from his home, so Justin could see it clearly: a pool of dark red blood flowed along the surrounding stone floor, looking like a small snake.
"This is just too inhumane!" Regardless of why the police fired their guns, the act of shooting and killing someone in broad daylight is already shocking. Moreover, the victim was a defenseless civilian.
“This world…” Justin wondered. He took a coat from the wardrobe outside and put it on. The coat was very old-fashioned; Justin had never seen one like it in his entire twenties. However, the bowler hat on the coat rack next to him looked somewhat familiar.
Stepping outside, Justin took his first real look at the world. It must be winter; some of the roads were piled high with snow. Justin slowly walked out and saw a man who looked like a beggar squatting on a street corner.
Justin approached, and the beggar immediately took off his tattered hat. "Amen, may the gods be with you! Sir, is there anything I can help you with?"
“Um, Amen.” Justin was a little puzzled, but judging from Natalie’s previous attitude, it seemed that the Church held a very important position here. “Excuse me, what is this world called?”
The beggar looked at Justin strangely, seemingly surprised that this man in his twenties didn't know things that even a fool should know. Justin smiled brightly, "Sorry, I have amnesia. My family told me to interact with everyone more."
"Oh, I see. I thought I'd met someone from another world, Amen!" the beggar said hastily. Justin gave a wry smile. "Sorry, actually I really am from another world."
Through the beggar's conversation, Justin learned that there is only one continent in this world, or rather, only one kingdom. This continent is called the Continent of Horn, and its currency is called Horn. The lowest denomination is one Horn.
However, compared to the continental autonomy of their homeland, this place is clearly more independent. There is no connection between the cities, and the continent's highest leader cannot interfere with the autonomy of the cities.
Overall, although the continent of Horn consists of only one country, these cities are essentially independent powers.
And those who command these forces are the Church and the Nobles.
After greeting the beggar, Justin tightened his coat and walked away steadily. Natalie had left herself some money, enough to support her for a while. But once that was over, she would have to find work.
Even now, Justin still can't quite believe he's traveled through time and isn't dreaming. After all, it's truly astonishing that he ended up here for no apparent reason.
Also, what exactly is Natalie trying to hide? And why did the man named Krembo die?
Justin entered a bakery and pushed his way through the crowd. "I didn't expect even a bakery to be so crowded. And the bread here is..."
Justin frowned. The bread here was all rye bread, made from hard rye. It tasted terrible, but it filled his stomach.
Justin reluctantly picked out a few pieces, thinking they would taste good with coffee when he got home. He then went to the counter to pay.
There was no cashier here, so when Justin paid, he watched the cashier count the Horn coins Justin handed over.
Just as Justin stepped out of the store, he felt a sudden pang of hunger. He took out a loaf of bread from the bag, took a bite, and nearly knocked out several teeth. "Ugh, really... awful!" Justin groaned. He was about to take a second bite when another gunshot rang out. The sound was so sudden that Justin almost dropped his bread in fright.
"What the hell?" Justin muttered, then saw a guy dressed in aristocratic clothes talking to a bunch of policemen not far away. The policemen nodded and started firing at a large group of people who were tied up.
Gunshots rang out. Justin cursed inwardly; these guys were killing indiscriminately! In just one day, he had witnessed more killings than he would normally see in a year.
Darkness. This word suddenly came to mind, and Justin immediately thought that perhaps it wasn't just his city that was like this; perhaps the entire continent of Horn was plagued by this indiscriminate killing.
No wonder the supplies here are so scarce. Thinking of this, Justin shook his head, his chances of returning to Earth decreasing considerably.
It seems the only way to get back is through church!
Justin thought to himself, and then went home. Making hand-ground coffee for the first time, Justin was truly bewildered. Although he had cooked his own meals since childhood, grinding coffee was something he rarely did.
After finally grinding a cup of coffee, Justin breathed a sigh of relief and returned to his room.
Justin's room was very simple. He searched it many times but found nothing of any use. Of course, except for a few history books about the continent of Horn that were tucked inside the wooden table.
Justin was engrossed in reading the book when he was interrupted by the sound of coffee boiling. He scurried over and poured the coffee into a cup—even though it belonged to Natalie.
Sure enough, after warming up the incredibly hard black bread with hot coffee, it became edible. Justin ate very quickly, a fact that had been the subject of ridicule in college. While others finished half a meal, Justin would have enough to go get a second serving. And he never wasted any food.
Justin quickly finished the black bread, wiped the remaining coffee from the corner of his mouth, and then, rather unreliably, glanced towards Natalie's room.
Natalie was arguably the first strange person he had encountered in this world. And a very, very strange one at that. Even though she was his sister.
However, if I can find anything in her room, that would be a huge help!
Justin thought to himself, downed the last sip of coffee, and then looked around, feeling inexplicably guilty. After all, Natalie probably didn't want him sneaking into her room.
But let's be dogs this once!
Justin muttered "Sorry" to himself, then scrambled into Natalie's room. "Thump!" he exclaimed, then exclaimed, "What's that thing sticking out here?!"
