Chapter 351 Is our family really going to stay here?

I caught a black carp weighing about three pounds in the freshwater and stewed it in a pot. I also made some flatbread with a mixture of wheat, water, and cornmeal on the side of the pot. Thinking of the child with a persistent high fever, I cooked some porridge on the stove next to the pot.

After finishing, she put the stewed fish and cooked porridge into two old clay pots that she had previously collected from the Chen family. Every household had these kinds of clay pots, so if someone found them, they wouldn't be able to find out whose they were.

Then the rice was put into a mesh bag before it left the space.

Seeing no movement from the next room, I quietly opened the door and went out.

He tiptoed to the main house and, hearing that his parents were already asleep, hurriedly opened the door and headed towards the cowshed.

Because it wasn't far, it only took a few minutes to get close. Seeing that there was still a faint light inside, I released my spiritual energy.

This sight revealed a truly miserable life for this family of four.

The four of them were crammed onto one kang (a heated brick bed), and there were only two tattered quilts. The old woman with a full head of white hair held a five or six-year-old child with empty eyes and asked, "Old Kang, is our family really going to have to stay here?"

The old man, called Lao Kang, kept staring at his grandson in his wife's arms and murmured, "Xiao Ze will be alright, and we won't stay here."

That's what he said, but his expression wasn't much better. He probably said those things to comfort his wife.

After saying that, he got up and poured a bowl of water from the clay pot on the ground: "I'll give Xiaoze some more water. He's had a fever for so long, he can't be dehydrated."

The old lady said, "Old Kang, if it weren't for the darkness, you should have gone and begged the village secretary to give us some grain first."

She choked up a little as she said this, and after a moment she continued, "Even if the two of them can't hold on and have to leave first, I don't want them to starve to death."

After saying these words, the old lady burst into tears.

The old man hurriedly stepped forward and patted his wife's shoulder, as if he had made up his mind: "Okay, I'll go." Hearing this, Chu Xue quickly went to the door, put the two clay pots and net bag at the door, then knocked on the door three times, turned around and ran to a secluded spot.

She saw the old man who had asked her for medicine during the day come out, look around, and just as he was about to close the door, he saw the things on the ground.

Instead of reaching out to take it, he was so frightened that he closed the door.

His action startled the old woman who was coaxing the child on the kang (a heated brick bed): "Old Kang, what's wrong?"

The old man stammered when he got nervous: "Outside, outside, there's something outside."

The old woman asked with a puzzled look, "What is it?"

The old man didn't answer. Instead, he opened the door again, glanced outside, and after confirming that he wasn't seeing things, slammed the door shut again: "There really is something outside."

The old woman craned her neck, as if trying to peek through the crack in the leaky door, but unfortunately, it was pitch black outside and she couldn't see anything: "Old man, see if anyone is outside. If no one is, then bring the things in."

She was desperately hoping someone would help them, so when she saw the old man hadn't moved, she urged him anxiously, "Hurry up!"

The old man calmed himself down before opening the door again. When he saw what was outside, a look of surprise flashed in his eyes, since there were two clay pots there.

He quickly carried the clay pots back into the house one by one, and then brought in the flatbread from the mesh bag: "Old woman, it's still hot, it was just made not long ago."

For some reason, the old man immediately thought of the little girl from today.
