Chapter 49 Talent Test
Chapter 49 Talent Test
Roland's heart sank. He could certainly become an extraordinary being if he insisted on it, but the idea of dying at the mere sight of "wind" sounded rather frightening.
He calmed himself down and continued reading. The following content was divided into three parts: talent level, how to detect talent, and what to do if you don't have talent.
Talents are generally divided into six levels, arranged from low to high: Common, Awakened, Rare, Outstanding, Innately Extraordinary, and Divine Descendant.
Those with good talent are not easily corrupted, can quickly integrate extraordinary traits, and can rapidly advance to higher ranks without resource constraints.
There are many ways to test whether a person has talent. Usually, extraordinary rituals or astrology are used, and some magical items can also do this. Ritual is relatively accurate.
The cost of the testing ceremony is not high, but most ordinary people cannot afford it, and many ordinary people will never have any interaction with the extraordinary in their entire lives.
If one lacks talent but desires extraordinary power, there are currently three known legitimate pathways: the Enforcement Spirit Realm of the Sid Empire, the Church's Chosen Ones, and the Awakening of the Golden Bloodline.
Those favored by God, like law enforcers, are entirely dependent on God's power. However, those favored by God are extremely rare; most churches do not have them, and they exist almost exclusively in history and legend.
The Golden Bloodline refers to the human bloodline of the Third Era, the golden age of humanity, when humans were born with one or more superpowers, unrelated to extraordinary traits and free from pollution.
Two eras have passed, and humanity has long since degenerated, making the probability of bloodline awakening extremely low. Even when a few lucky individuals do awaken their powers, they are often quite useless and of little practical value.
Roland felt that others should regard him as having the Golden Bloodline, probably due to his ability to summon or form contracts.
'This is the proper way? That means there are still quite a few forbidden methods.' He was somewhat helpless; forbidden knowledge was not something he wanted.
"Squeak—" Just as he was deep in thought, the bedroom door suddenly opened.
Yulia emerged barefoot, wrapped in a crimson fur cloak, as silently as a cat, her hair loose and her face bare.
She walked straight to the seat next to Roland, sat down lazily, rested her elbows on the table, propped her chin up with her hand, and said softly, "Finished reading? Any thoughts?"
"Could you help me test my talent?" Roland asked earnestly. If he truly lacked talent, then his future development path would need to be carefully considered.
“No problem, I’m just as curious.” Yulia opened her right hand, revealing a colorless potion she had been holding. “The Soul Resonance Potion, combined with the Premonition Crystal, makes it easy to identify the cause. It’s safe and quick, but not precise enough.”
She had long heard from Aunt Mia that Roland lacked talent; supposedly, his parents had hired someone to test him, and Bozeman, the one who brought Roland, had also emphasized this. But after meeting Roland herself, she developed deep doubts about it.
"What should I do?" Roland took a deep breath. Julia really knew her stuff; she had clearly come prepared.
"Come in with me." Julia got up and went back into the house, and Roland quickly followed.
As soon as he entered the room, he smelled a fresh floral fragrance. It was very light and pleasant, making him feel relaxed without even realizing it.
“This is a calming incense, non-toxic and harmless. Lie down on the carpet in the middle; that’s what I usually use for making medicine, it has the effect of isolating spiritual interference.” Julia pointed to Roland’s armpits. “Put down what you’re holding; it will interfere with the test results.”
Roland was startled, not expecting the exiles to be exposed so quickly. He had no choice but to take off his coat, remove both guns, and put them aside.
"How did you find out?"
"Colin's?" Yulia drew the Exile, popped out a bullet, and examined it closely. "This is a magic-breaking bullet. It has inscriptions on it and is specifically designed to deal with monsters or extraordinary beings."
Extraordinary objects radiate power; better magical objects can conceal themselves, but these artificial bullets are detectable upon close approach unless the holder uses their spiritual power to conceal them.
"So that's how it is." Roland lay on the carpet, his tone wistful. The inspiration of extraordinary beings is truly invaluable; it's indeed very unsafe for ordinary people to possess extraordinary items.
An opening potion was suddenly placed near his mouth. He glanced at Yulia, opened his mouth, let the potion flow into his mouth, and then swallowed it in one gulp.
Trust is mutual. If he hesitates at this moment, he will definitely hurt Yulia, since she is the one who has been giving all along.
"Close your eyes, relax, and don't think about anything." Yulia smiled, looking like she was in a good mood.
She placed a colorless, pyramid-shaped crystal, about the size of an adult's fist, on Roland's forehead. With a gentle touch of her index finger, the crystal suddenly lit up, revealing a faint, inverted three-dimensional pattern resembling plant roots. A bright light filled his vision, the shimmering white light shining through his eyelids into Roland's eyes. He felt a warm, comfortable sensation throughout his body, his breathing becoming longer and more even, each breath making him feel lighter.
A moment later, his body felt light, as if he had transformed into a bird, soaring freely through the sky. Suddenly, a violent storm descended, and the bird turned back, hiding in its "nest" before being exposed.
It was a massive floating platform, surrounded by an energy shield, traversing deep space, unfazed by raging storms.
He was momentarily dazed, then regained consciousness and immediately realized that he was in some kind of dream or projection illusion, and the shape of the "Bird's Nest" was just his own chessboard.
"Roland, Roland..." The call grew clearer and clearer. The next moment, the illusion shattered, and he opened his eyes to see Julia's fair face, every detail clearly visible.
She bent over, her face very close, her eyes fixed on the omen crystal, her expression one of shock.
"Am I... talented?!" Roland asked, suppressing his excitement as he considered the possibility.
“Look for yourself.” Yulia picked up the omen crystal and placed it in front of Roland. Almost all of the three-dimensional root system on it lit up, shimmering with seven colors, like a beautiful glass painting.
"The more completely the root system lights up, the stronger and more firmly anchored the test taker's soul roots are. As long as they light up, there is talent; if the entire root system lights up with seven colors... one is born extraordinary!"
Yulia stared at the omen crystal in disbelief; she preferred to believe it was broken.
"I...was born extraordinary!"
Roland leaped to his feet, pacing back and forth excitedly, all his past worries vanished. This talent was second only to the descendant of a god; it was obvious to anyone with a brain that it was extraordinary.
"It must have been that extraordinary person who deceived my parents," he forced an explanation.
Talent originates from the soul. The original owner is dead, and the reason why a chessboard appeared in the illusion is self-evident, but this matter cannot be known to outsiders.
“Legend has it that those born extraordinary possess spirituality and several extraordinary abilities from birth, their souls unpolluted.” Julia stared blankly at Roland. “Your situation…”
“Uh…” Roland paused, not expecting that he had inadvertently broken the rules again. “Is it possible that my talent has always been dormant?”
“I don’t know.” Yulia calmed herself down and restored the omen crystal to its original state with a flick of her finger. “This is something you and I both know. Remember, your talent is level three: Rare.”
“I understand.” Roland nodded solemnly, probably guessing that his talent was somewhat extraordinary. “Then can I start considering extraordinary methods and potions now?”
“There are countless extraordinary paths, but not all of them are complete. Their potential limits vary greatly, and their levels of danger differ. Therefore, one must be extremely cautious, and once a path is chosen, there is no going back,” Yulia said solemnly.
"How many complete extraordinary pathways are there? If I want to become an extraordinary being, what should I do? How do I contact extraordinary organizations, and how do I acquire knowledge and potions?" Roland had been pondering these difficulties.
“Even my mentor doesn’t know how many extraordinary pathways there are,” Yulia said irritably. “Do you think this is a vegetable market, where everything is laid out for you to choose from? Your most important thing right now is to make money! Any Sequence 9 potion from any pathway costs over a thousand Nisu. Can you afford it?”
“Cough…” Roland swallowed. “It doesn’t seem as expensive as I imagined.”
Yulia rolled her eyes at him and said helplessly, "I'm a pharmacist, I can charge you the cost price, but do you know the recipe and the ritual? Do you have any extraordinary materials?"
Roland was speechless.
“I know of two extraordinary paths, the Pharmacist and the Knight, but I have no right to give them to you directly. The Pharmacist path comes from my mentor, and the Knight path is a family tradition. Study hard and build a solid foundation, and I will explain it to you when I have time. If you are interested, I can introduce you to them,” Julia said softly, reassuring Roland to prevent him from becoming impatient.
"Thank you." Roland knew there was no such thing as a free lunch, but he was still very grateful to Julia.
