Chapter 40: The Child's Rescue (Follow-up)
The method Su Nuannuan just used is called the Heimlich maneuver. It was invented by Dr. Heimlich of the United States in 1974 and is mainly used for patients with complete or severe airway obstruction.

This method hasn't been invented yet. Therefore, Su Nuannuan uses it without any psychological burden.

Just then, the middle-aged man who had reminded Su Nuannuan spoke up.

"Hello, I am Qian Jin, the train conductor of this train. Thank you for your help."

After saying that, he saluted Su Nuannuan and Zhao Yalan, and the other train attendants followed suit and saluted the two of them.

In those days, to prevent pickpockets and other criminals from robbing trains, the train attendants were usually veterans or active-duty soldiers who had been transferred due to injury. Their standard salutes revealed that this was an instinctive reaction from their military background.

Su Nuannuan had great respect for soldiers and returned their salute, though her movements weren't quite standard.

It was only then that Su Nuannuan realized that the man she had been talking to was wearing the same uniform as the train conductor.

The boy has calmed down and is now sobbing in his parents' arms.

Their parents walked up to Su Nuannuan and bowed to her.

"Thank you for saving my son."

They have learned that it was Su Nuannuan who revealed the method to save her son at the critical moment, thus saving his life.

Both of them were old enough to be Su Nuannuan's parents, and Su Nuannuan couldn't bear it, so she immediately helped them up.

"It's nothing serious, I just happened to know how. If you want to thank someone, thank Sister Yalan. She was the one who suggested coming; otherwise, I wouldn't have come along."

"Thank you all, thank you all. You are all benefactors to our family."

Neither of them disregarded Su Nuannuan because of her young age, nor did they ignore her just because Zhao Yalan was only lending a hand.

Just then, Qian Jin spoke up.

"Now that everything is resolved, everyone can go home."

Many people were stuck here, seriously disrupting order inside the train.

While the train conductor was evacuating the crowd, Su Nuannuan and Zhao Yalan also wanted to leave, but Qian Jin blocked their way.

"Comrades, may I ask your names and where you work? I will report this to my superiors and award you certificates of merit."

Su Nuannuan's eyes lit up; the certificate of merit—she wanted it!
In the 60s, working for the railway bureau was the best-paying job. Many people wanted this "iron rice bowl" because it not only paid well but also had military connections.

With this certificate, even if it couldn't do anything during the turmoil six years later, it could still deter some petty people and show that he had a loyal heart to the Party.

"My name is Su Nuannuan, and I will be going to study at Beijing University this year."

Zhao Yalan didn't care about the certificate. She just answered because she saw Su Nuannuan wanted it.

"My name is Zhao Yalan, and I am a Chinese literature teacher at Peking University."

Qian Jin was surprised that both of them were from Beijing University, and one of them was even a teacher there. His gaze towards them immediately softened with admiration.

Compared to these roughnecks, the country is in dire need of educated young people. Especially Su Nuannuan, who looks younger than her own child, yet she has already been admitted to a university in Beijing.

"I understand. I will report this to my superiors and award you credit."

When Su Nuannuan and Zhao Yalan returned, everyone in the carriage gathered around them.

There's no way around it; watching a spectacle is human nature.

They had considered following her, but when Zhao Yalan left, a train conductor came to maintain order, so the group couldn't leave.

Zhao Yalan showed no impatience and recounted what had happened.

Everyone breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing that the child had been rescued.

Everyone was very simple and honest, and they all hoped the child would be alright. After Zhao Yalan finished explaining, she returned to her seat and exchanged a smile with Su Nuannuan.

"Nuan Nuan, you're amazing. If it weren't for you today, that child probably wouldn't have been saved."

Speaking of this, Zhao Yalan still felt a lingering fear. Today was also the closest she had ever come to witnessing death.

No one knew that while she was helping the little boy, her mind was completely blank; she was simply mechanically repeating the actions Su Nuannuan had described. Fortunately, the boy was eventually saved.

Otherwise, she couldn't imagine how much she would blame herself later.

Seeing Zhao Yalan's fear, Su Nuannuan squeezed her hand.

"Sister Yalan, you were very brave today too. If you hadn't been there, I wouldn't have been able to lift that boy. So, you deserve half the credit for the child being saved."

Su Nuannuan was absolutely right. She was only 15 years old, and her body's organs hadn't fully developed yet. Even with the nourishment of the spiritual spring water every day, she couldn't suddenly become as strong as an ox.

While the two were talking, they didn't notice the admiring look in Chu Huaying's eyes.

"Mom, I want to be as amazing as you and Sister Nuannuan when I grow up."

Chu Huaying was too young to express his thoughts accurately. He only felt that his mother and sister Nuannuan were amazing for saving the sick child.

Zhao Yalan didn't think much of it, assuming her son wanted to show off, so she agreed.

"Yes, Huaying, you'll definitely be amazing in the future."

The two talked for a while longer, then Su Nuannuan got sleepy and fell asleep.

When I opened my eyes again, it was pitch black outside the window.

Just as Su Nuannuan was about to have dinner, the father of the child she had saved during the day came looking for her.

Upon seeing Zhao Yalan and Su Nuannuan, he excitedly stepped forward.

"Comrades, we've finally found you."

Zhao Yalan and Su Nuannuan exchanged a glance. They didn't understand why he had sought them out. So, Zhao Yalan took the initiative and asked.

"Comrade, who are you looking for?"

Su Nuannuan also looked at the man curiously. The man was still wearing the Zhongshan suit he had worn during the day, only the clothes were slightly wrinkled.

The man smiled at the two women and handed the two bags to Zhao Yalan and Su Nuannuan respectively.

"I've come to thank you. When I tried to look for you during the day, you were already gone. I asked the train conductor about you, and that's how I found you."

Zhao Yalan and Su Nuannuan's instinctive reaction was to refuse. Unexpectedly, the man simply placed the bag on their seats.

Then, he took two more pieces of paper out of his pocket and handed them to the two people.

"My name is Xu Heyi, and I am the secretary to the director of the No. 1 Steel Plant in Beijing. This is my contact information. The train conductor told me you are from Beijing University. If you need any help in Beijing, you can come to me."

Looking into Xu Heyi's sincere eyes, Su Nuannuan knew that he was genuine.

Zhao Yalan was somewhat surprised after hearing Xu Heyi's self-introduction.

"You work at Beijing No. 1 Steel Plant? Do you know Ji Lan? She's my mother-in-law, and she also works at Beijing No. 1 Steel Plant."

Xu Heyi was very excited when he heard this, and his voice involuntarily rose.

"How could I not know her! She's the deputy director of our steel plant, known as the Iron Lady."

Zhao Yalan hadn't expected that Xu Heyi knew her mother-in-law, and the two of them instantly became much closer.
