Chapter 5, 5-card bug in progress

Chapter 5.5. Exploiting the Bug in Progress

Yi Shui went to the cafeteria and had another breakfast, finally relieving his hunger.

He was grateful for the full scholarship; otherwise, he would have gone broke just from feeding his family.

He then eagerly went to the gymnasium to prepare for training.

It was 1:30 p.m., and Yi Shui was in the 6th round of training, the 3rd exercise. Halfway through, he had the same feeling he had when he finished the 4th round yesterday.

He had tried to push his limits and ended up fainting from exhaustion. This time, he stopped training in time and asked himself some questions.

"Injury Card: Functional Repair... Your physical condition is no longer sufficient to complete a training program. Number of training rounds completed: 5 rounds. You meet the treatment requirements. The system will perform treatment while you sleep tonight. Please ensure you get enough sleep."

Yi Shui breathed a sigh of relief; she didn't have to practice until she fainted.

He had a neighbor who could carry him back, but he didn't want to worry those two guys anymore.

After finishing training for the day, Yi Shui returned to his dormitory, took a shower, borrowed Robinson's used car, and headed to the main campus's School of Education.

Stamford is located in the westernmost part of Connecticut, bordering New York City directly, while Storrs, where the main campus of UConn is located, is in the center of the state. However, it only took Yi Shui 40 minutes to get from his dormitory to the entrance of the UConn gymnasium.

Because Connecticut is very small, it would be considered a county in other states, with the furthest two ends only 140 kilometers apart.

Upon meeting head coach Calhoun and player development coach Clark, Yi Shui was subjected to a barrage of criticism, but this actually relieved him.

He really let down these two coaches, especially the latter.

Calhoun is, after all, the head coach, and he has a lot of work to do, so we don't have many private conversations with him.

But Clark was different. When he first came to the United States at the age of 17 and couldn't even speak English fluently, it was Clark, the player development coach, who helped him.

His basketball skills were almost entirely built during his pre-college years and first semester of college with Clark's help. The foundation he built while playing basketball in China... He can run and jump?
Moreover, Clark had higher expectations for him than Calhoun did. During his period of indulgence, Clark tried to persuade him many times, but he didn't appreciate it. Later, he even had a big fight with Clark and they haven't been in contact for a long time.

Thinking about Clark's track record of developing players, Yi Shui felt like strangling him.

This assistant coach, or more accurately, the trainer, is known as the strongest trainer in the East League!

Clark was teammates with James Worthy and Michael Jordan. After graduating from North Carolina in 84, he went undrafted in the NBA draft. He then returned to his alma mater, North Carolina, as an unpaid coach, but was not given much playing time and worked for free for three years.

In 87, he was spotted by Calhoun, who was not yet famous at the time, and came to the Husky team, becoming a member of the Husky team's "coaching dream team" during the 95-04 "golden decade".

Over the past 20 years, Clark has nurtured many famous players, including Donyell Marshall, Ray Allen, Richard Hamilton, Caron Butler, Ben Gordon, Emeka Okafor, and Rudy Gay. He single-handedly transformed the Huskies into the 'cradle of NBA second-in-commands'.

He was originally worried about how to break the ice with these two after the new season started, but he didn't expect that he would solve the problem by practicing until he fainted yesterday. He didn't need to learn from Mitsui Hisashi and cry his eyes out, saying "Coach, I want to play basketball".

...

After being scolded and completing his medical examination, Yi Shui returned to Stamford and treated Robinson and Yad to dinner.

He didn't feel bad about paying by card; it was a fair price to pay. But when he received the balance notification on his phone, he was devastated. He was once again grateful for the full scholarship. Even though the food in the cafeteria wasn't very good, at least he could eat as much as he wanted without worrying about starving.

The next day, Yi Shui continued training, and this summer, he was practically glued to the gymnasium.

This time, he didn't start with training tasks, but instead practiced dribbling layups and three-pointers at a 45-degree angle.

Driving past the basket and catching and shooting three-pointers were his main scoring methods when he was playing well. If he wants to regain his lost basketball skills, these two are definitely the first things he needs to practice.

However, he made some adjustments to his three-point training. Now that he has become a 'angle genius', he must focus on this aspect.

After practicing shooting for an hour, Yi Shui stopped basketball training and went to the gym to begin his 'functional restoration' training.

By 3 p.m., after Yi Shui had exhausted all his efforts to complete the fourth round of training, that feeling of hitting the wrong target returned.

He finished his training session for the day and turned on the system screen.

"Injury Card: Functional Repair... Your physical condition is no longer sufficient to complete a training program. Number of training rounds completed: 4. Treatment conditions are met..."

Despite being extremely exhausted and having a dizzy and throbbing head, Yi Shui couldn't suppress the smile on her face.

There are two conditions for activating the 'Functional Repair' injury card: either you have completed the daily training task to meet the standard, or you are forced to end training due to physical exhaustion but have already completed at least half of the training task to meet the standard.

There was no loophole to exploit in the former, but Yi Shui had thought of the latter the day before yesterday morning—could he first use other training to deplete some of his physical strength so that he could complete at least half of the training tasks but not all of them?

Today's training tests confirmed this hypothesis.

If he only had this injury card, he probably wouldn't want to exploit this loophole; he desperately needed its effect to help him 'reconstruct' his physical talent back to the level of an 18-and-a-half-year-old. But after carefully studying the 'Functional Transformation' talent card, he believed it should also have a similar 'reconstructing physical talent' effect.

He believes there is room for maneuver in this!

However, the tests are not yet completely finished; we still need to see if his other guess is correct.

...

The next day, July 1st, a new month began.

After waking up from a nap, Yi Shui was once again full of energy and starving.

After breakfast, he got into Yad's car and they headed to the main campus together.

As the team's offensive core in the paint, Yad has at least three training sessions arranged by the coaching staff every week, and Robinson does the same, although the times usually don't coincide with Yad's.

The two players play different positions, and usually train with teammates who play the same position.

This is actually a privilege reserved for players who are the team's key development focus; most players can only train on their own during the off-season.

Yi Shui had received similar treatment before, but he brought it upon himself...

He went along this time for no other reason than to lift weights to show the coaching staff.

Training isn't something you do for others to see, but you need to let others see it so they know how hard you're working.

However, after only two days of 'showing effort,' his training method of not stopping until he was completely exhausted startled Calhoun, who was paying attention to his training.

After being scolded, he could only train one day at the main campus and one day at Stanford, alternating between the two, so that the coaching staff would think that he had rested properly after pushing himself so hard.

It's Friday, July 6th, at the Concordia University Stamford Campus gymnasium.

Yi Shui stopped pushing the pace and, after completing her warm-up exercises in the morning, devoted herself fully to the training task of "functional restoration".

At 3:58 p.m., he completed all 7 rounds of training for 'Day 1' for the first time!
When he stopped training, the system screen popped up automatically.

"Injury Card: Pre-training task for functional recovery."

Progress: Day 1 training has been completed as planned. Your physical deficit has been partially replenished. After tonight's treatment, your stamina will increase from 53 to 55.

Just as Yi Shui guessed, for every day of training that meets the standard, one can use part of the healing effect of this injury card to 'restore' some of their physical strength!
This deduction is not difficult to make. It is mentioned in the preliminary training tasks of 'functional repair' that the training volume will be greater each day. If it were not 'phased treatment of injuries', it would take an unknown amount of time to complete the '7-day' training task.

After shutting down the system, Yi Shui pressed his thigh muscles, recalling the training of the past nine days.

On the 28th, the first 'functional repair' training was conducted, and after the treatment, the stamina increased by two points; on the 29th, the training increased by one point; on the 30th and the 1st, the training lasted for two days, and the stamina increased by one point, with the cumulative stamina increasing from 49 to 53.

However, from the 2nd to the 5th, my stamina did not continue to increase.

He judged that the current training was no longer so physically demanding. Continuing to train and combining it with treatment would definitely have an effect, but he didn't have that much time to slowly exhaust himself, so he decided to postpone the training today.

With the experience gained from this phase of training, he decided that for the next 5 days of training, if he couldn't "squeeze out" any more energy for two consecutive days, he would move on to the "next day"!
...

Time flies like an arrow; in the blink of an eye, the sweltering July has passed.

Yi Shui spends every day in the gymnasiums of the main campus or the Stamford campus, training to the point of exhaustion.

With the help of 'treatment', he has no physical problems and wakes up full of energy every morning.

However, psychologically, he once had thoughts of fatigue and aversion to training. But seeing the improvement in his physical strength in the file and feeling that his physical strength was getting better day by day, he chose to grit his teeth and persevere. After getting through the 'training aversion period', he gradually got used to this daily training life.

Calhoun, Clark, and lead assistant coach Jerry Cook also went through a difficult period because of Yi Shui.

Although they were happy to see Yi Shui turn over a new leaf, they were also genuinely afraid that he would come and train them to the point of near death every other day!
However, as time went on, seeing that Yi Shui's training didn't kill him, but instead improved his stamina and allowed him to train for longer periods... they gradually got used to it...

On August 3rd, at the Concordia University Stanford Campus Gymnasium, Yi Shui began another day of training.

At 3:25 PM, Yi Shui finished the last round and the last training exercise of 'Day 6' and received a system notification that the training 'met the standard' and her stamina increased from 69 to 74!
