Chapter 37 New Abilities
Zhang Wenda silently observed everything inside the monster before him, his expression somewhat grave.
Why are there children inside? Is it truly our future? In this world, is everyone destined to become a monster?
He wasn't sure what the rotting child meant, but seeing this scene inexplicably made him feel somewhat depressed.
Standing to the side, Song Jianguo rubbed his arm, which was bruised from being strangled, and said with a complicated expression, "Is this really an old man?"
Zhang Wenda hesitated for a moment, then shook his head. "I don't know. I'm not sure what it is. Maybe it's not an old man, maybe it's just a monster that has sprung up in this library."
He turned off the flashlight and, in an attempt to distract himself, began to examine the red scars on his arm.
"So this thing is called a red kernel? Why is it called that? Who came up with that name?"
Since it's been published as a book, it seems to have a mature system for using it, so it shouldn't be one's innate special ability.
Honestly, I skimmed through the text too quickly, and only managed to memorize one usage method before using it to save the day. I didn't remember anything else.
Seemingly sensing Zhang Wenda's desire, a gust of wind blew, and more ashes drifted over, forming various books in front of Zhang Wenda.
"Intermediate application of the red core."
"Advanced applications of red cores".
"The initial application of yellow kernels".
"The Blue Core's Touch."
"No...no! I absolutely can't look at it anymore!" Faced with the extremely tempting book, Zhang Wenda forced himself to close his eyes.
He wasn't sure if reading all of this would turn him into an "adult" like the rabbit, or worse, into an "old man" like this monster.
Having navigated the complexities of society for so long, he firmly believes in one thing: anything given away for free without any apparent reason is definitely suspicious, whether it's money, a favor, or a book.
Just as Zhang Wenda was forcing himself to close his eyes, trying to escape the temptation of those books, he suddenly heard Song Jianguo's exclamation beside him.
The next second, he felt himself being pushed away by a tremendous force and falling into the water.
When Zhang Wenda hurriedly opened his eyes, he saw that, accompanied by a roar, the "old man" had actually stood up again! He was still alive!
"Holy crap! This thing's stomach's ripped open and it's still alive?!" Zhang Wenda's face turned grim as he pulled out his flashlight again.
With a "whoosh," the red lightsaber reappeared, and with the help of a flashlight, Zhang Wenda's red core was now almost depleted.
Zhang Wenda, sword in one hand, gritted his teeth as he stared at the disemboweled monster before him, the tip of his sword pointing directly at the colossal creature that had risen again. "Come on!"
This time, the two stood so close that Zhang Wenda could even see the viscous, putrid liquid gushing from his abdomen and dripping onto the murky water.
As all this happened, a stench began to spread around.
At this moment, the other party no longer looked like an old man at all, but more like a giant zombie that had just crawled out of a grave.
Upon seeing Zhang Wenda's actions, the monster let out a muffled roar. It flung aside the broken staff, unleashing its massive, deformed hand with eight withered, branch-like fingers, tearing through the air as it lunged at Zhang Wenda. Armed with a weapon, Zhang Wenda showed no fear. As his last bit of red core was used up, he slid sideways like an arrow released from a bow. Immediately, the flashlight in his hand transformed into a red beam, precisely slashing diagonally at the monster's grasping wrist.
There was no clanging of metal, only a tooth-grinding sound, like a scalding hot iron cutting into rotten wood and leather.
Where the red light passed, half of the monster's thick wrist was severed, and no blood splattered from the charred cut; only wisps of black smoke rose up, accompanied by a pungent, burnt smell.
The wound looked severe, but it seemed to have no effect on the monster. With its remaining left hand, it yanked the water surface even faster, pulling Zhang Wenda off balance.
The next second, just as Zhang Wenda was about to get up, he suddenly felt a darkness above his head, and the cold, fishy water instantly filled his mouth and nose. He almost rolled to the left while skimming the surface of the water.
"Cough cough!" Zhang Wenda struggled to surface in the water, looking disheveled. His weapon could indeed easily cut through the other's body, but this guy was like a corpse, and no matter how he attacked him, it had no effect.
Faced with this invincible thing, Zhang Wenda could only think of trying to behead it. If that didn't work, he would have to sever all four limbs to completely disable it.
However, for him, who had exhausted his red cores, this was undoubtedly an almost impossible task.
As the suffocating stench surged up again, Zhang Wenda had just raised his head from the water when he saw three pitch-black holes.
Just at this critical moment, a shrill, piercing meow rang out.
Those were Song Jianguo's cats. Ignoring the flowing filth and pungent stench, they crawled into the monster's open belly and frantically tore and scratched like rats.
However, the monster ignored the warning and raised its hand again to smash towards Zhang Wenda.
As Song Jianguo's sharp whistle rang out, the black cats in the water beside him leaped up instantly, their bodies overlapping each other in front of Zhang Wenda to form a furry black shield.
Although they were just individual cats, when they regrouped, they seemed to form a shield, incredibly strong, and actually blocked that strange, full-force attack.
Once again, accompanied by Song Jianguo's whistle, another group of black cats leaped high from the nearby bookshelf, transforming into a black spear in mid-air, which pierced the monster's left eye.
All of this left Zhang Wenda stunned. He turned to Song Jianguo beside him and asked, "You have this trick up your sleeve?"
Song Jianguo snorted smugly, "Just like you, I'm a beginner." As she spoke, she casually tossed away the parchment she had finished reading.
Seeing this, Zhang Wenda immediately became anxious, "I already told you, there's something wrong with the things here, don't look around."
"If you can watch it, why can't I? I understand, I understand."
After finishing his impatient explanation, Song Jianguo pointed to the monster entangled with the black cat in the distance and said, "What do we do with this thing? It doesn't seem to be alive at all."
"Look, it can still move even like this. I always feel like it's not a person."
Zhang Wenda looked at the monster in the distance with a complicated expression, gripped the red flashlight in his hand which was already flashing, and said, "Let's go! No matter what it is, let's take care of it together!"
