Chapter 38 Enemy
With a "sizzle" and a flash of red light, a one-meter-long wound instantly appeared on the monster's left foot.
This strike almost completely severed the opponent's left foot.
As the foul-smelling, rotting liquid gushed from the wound, the monster staggered and knelt on one knee.
After several rounds of coordinated attacks, Zhang Wenda and Song Jianguo had inflicted more than a dozen wounds on the monster's body.
Black liquid oozed from the numerous wounds, spreading throughout the library's water and polluting everything around it.
Even so, the monster could still move. It swayed its tattered body and climbed out of the water again, opening its dark mouth and letting out a viscous roar at Zhang Wenda.
Zhang Wenda wondered if it was just his imagination, but he noticed that the other person's body was noticeably larger than before.
Song Jianguo, sitting on the bookshelf, glanced at the black cat beside her, who was so exhausted she was vomiting. She said to Zhang Wenda, "This can't go on like this. My cat can't take it anymore."
Exhausted and panting, Zhang Wenda also looked down at his flashlight. The red beam of light was now flickering even more violently, as if the power was about to go out at any moment.
Looking at the completely gone red core on his arm, Zhang Wenda took a deep breath. "Try one more time, the last time! This time, cover me! I'm going to cut its head off!"
"Damn it! I shouldn't have agreed to come in with you!"
When the monster charged at Zhang Wenda again, he gritted his teeth and charged back.
Just as the cat shield quickly rose up in front of him, blocking the opponent's broken punch, it was time to...
Accompanied by meows, Zhang Wenda stepped directly onto the cat shield and jumped onto the other party's broad arm.
He gripped the flashlight tightly in his hand and ran towards the other person's head, stepping on the rotting arm.
As the dark, gaping mouth drew ever closer, Zhang Wenda roared and swung his weapon down with all his might.
With a final splatter, the red light in his hand vanished completely the instant he fell into the water.
When Zhang Wenda, panting heavily, climbed out of the water and looked up, he saw the huge head falling to the ground with a thunderous roar.
Zhang Wenda turned his head and waved to Song Jianguo in the distance. "It's alright! Come on over!"
However, at this moment he saw Song Jianguo in the distance, as if he was frightened, gesturing wildly behind him.
When Zhang Wenda felt water droplets falling from above his head like rain, he turned around and saw the headless corpse bending down to pick up the head from the water.
Seeing all this, Zhang Wenda felt a deep sense of powerlessness. This thing was impossible to kill. How was he supposed to fight it?
Just as the enormous head was put back in, Zhang Wenda's gaze shifted from the head up and down, landing back on the child in the womb. The rotting child's expression was contorted, and he was crying even harder than before.
"Could it be..." Zhang Wenda rushed forward again, grabbed the rotting piece of flesh, and jumped directly into the other's stomach.
He neither attacked nor dragged the child's body. Instead, he took out the White Rabbit candy that Ouyang had given him from his pocket and stuffed it, wrapper and all, into the child's mouth.
The moment the sugar entered the rotting child's mouth, the increasingly ferocious monster froze in place.
Panting heavily, Zhang Wenda jumped back into the water from the abdomen. He took a few steps back and watched as the bloated body of the monster in front of him gradually collapsed.
In the end, it disappeared into the water along with the rotting child, like bubbles.
"Wow, that's impressive! How did you do that?" Song Jianguo walked over in surprise and asked, looking at the empty water surface.
Zhang Wenda shook his head. "I don't know either, I just have a feeling." Song Jianguo rested her chin on her hand and thought for a moment before deciding not to consider such a complicated question anymore. She turned her head and whistled at the black cats next to her.
As the continuous meowing of cats rang out, the black cats pieced themselves together to form a fluffy black cat boat floating on the water.
Song Jianguo stood like a captain, one foot on the bow. "Where are we going next?"
Zhang Wenda gathered his thoughts, used his hands to support himself on the edge of the boat, and climbed onto the boat as well. "Let's go back first."
"Go back? You're not going to look anymore?" Song Jianguo asked, somewhat surprised.
"Let's go back first," Zhang Wenda said again, glancing at the completely depleted red core.
"After all this trouble, I'm exhausted and sleepy. Who knows what else this strange place has to offer? It's not safe to stay any longer."
"Anyway, the library is right here. Once the red core is fully restored and we have more sugar ready, we can explore again," he analyzed rationally.
This place is a bit too dangerous; he needs to be fully prepared.
Song Jianguo naturally wouldn't object to this, as she was already sleepy after a long day of work.
The two sat on the cat boat, slowly moving towards the exit as hundreds of cat legs swayed at the bottom of the boat.
After all that work, Song Jianguo finally had some free time. He took off his sleeves and stretched them out of the boat to wring out the water.
"Are you saying that's a person? If it were, how could it melt in water?"
Looking at the bookshelves and mountains of books gradually receding to the left and right, Zhang Wenda said, "I don't know, maybe it's just an obsession with the library."
Just then, he suddenly noticed a book slowly opening beside him, as if tempting him to look at it. He quickly shifted his gaze to the other side.
Suddenly, Zhang Wenda noticed something under Song Jianguo's sleeve. Her skin was a light brownish-black, but the skin under her sleeve was as white as snow, and there seemed to be some black tattoos on it.
Noticing Zhang Wenda's gaze, Song Jianguo turned to the side and put his wrung-out sleeves back on.
What happened to your hand?
"It's none of your business." Song Jianguo's voice carried a hint of anger for no apparent reason.
Zhang Wenda was a little confused by the other party's behavior. Why was this guy acting like a lunatic and suddenly getting angry?
Just as Zhang Wenda was about to ask a question, his expression turned serious, and he quickly leaned over the side of the boat, intently watching the incredibly calm water.
When he saw the concentric circles of subtle ripples spread again, Zhang Wenda frowned. "Something's wrong! There's a problem! Jianguo, make your cat go faster!"
After Song Jianguo blew a loud whistle, the cat boat sped up a bit again. However, no matter how fast the cat boat went, it still couldn't outrun certain things.
As the inexplicable trembling sound rang out again, a tall figure swayed towards them; it was an "old man," and many more "old men."
One, two, three, more and more "old people" surrounded us from all sides, and under their bodies, the surrounding light gradually became much dimmer.
Seeing this, Song Jianguo's cat ears drooped down, sticking tightly to his hair.
She swallowed hard, then took two steps back. "Hey, can you handle all of this?"
