Chapter 117, Section 116: The Necromancer
Chapter 117-116- The Necromancer
The rain continued to fall, washing the bloodstains on the ground into the drainage ditch. The old neighborhoods on both sides of the main road stood alone in the darkness, without a sound. It seemed that all the town's residents were immersed in the white noise of the continuous rainy night, enjoying an undisturbed sleep.
Zero, barefoot, stepped onto the slippery lampshade, causing her mutant minions to gather together. She yawned and waved her hand, and soon, a giant worm burst from the ground, swallowing all the mutants whole in one gulp, turning them into nourishment for its own evolution.
Suddenly, a voice rang out from the rooftop not far away. It was a slightly hoarse male voice. He chuckled and said, "No wonder Black Tower Pharmaceuticals is so eager to get your hands on you, little girl. You are indeed very special."
Zero paused in her yawning, which was replaced by a smile that returned to her face. She mechanically turned her head, step by step, toward the direction from which the sound came, her lips slowly splitting upward, radiating the purest and most chilling malice.
“I don’t want to be your enemy, little girl. I’m here on behalf of the sect’s goodwill.” The speaker came into Zero’s view. It wasn’t a living person, but a skeleton with ghostly green flames burning in its eye sockets.
On this stormy night, only a creature in this form could rival the silver-haired little girl on the streetlight in terms of eeriness.
“You are hiding a secret that is very important to the Black Tower, and we can provide you with protection. I think this is a very good deal,” the skeleton said with a smile. “Little girl, in this world, you will hardly find another organization like us that can help you stand up to the super corporations head-on.”
Zero remained silent, her eyes widening slightly, the malice in her dark red pupils growing more pronounced. At the same time, behind the windows of the houses that should have belonged to the town's residents, striking red lights suddenly shone, and countless bizarre shapes writhed in the darkness, like demons crawling out of hell.
"You actually turned everyone in the town into monsters? You madman! You damned monster!" The skeleton's tone changed, filled with extreme anger.
Clearly, even the necromancers of the Holy Spirit Cult, the world's number one cult, were shocked by Zero's utter lack of moral principles and his indiscriminate killing of innocent people.
He even doubted whether Zero had any sense of identity as a human being, otherwise how could he so utterly lack empathy and attack innocent civilians?
Moreover, these are not ordinary civilians; they are also precious believers of the sect!
Zero grinned at him. The next second, countless hideous humanoid mutants crawled out of the house and headed straight for the skull on the roof.
The skeleton snorted coldly. He knew there was no point in negotiating anymore; he wasn't even sure if this Zero could communicate normally with humans. He unleashed a burst of soul fire, capable of directly scorching spirituality. Under the attack of this soul domain, a large number of aberrations collapsed to the ground, turning into a pile of rotten flesh.
He then extracted a section of spine from a mutated corpse on the ground, and with a simple spell, melted it down and transformed it into a bone knife. Although his main body wasn't present, he believed that the remotely controlled elite skeleton warrior was more than capable of forcibly taking down the little girl.
But his confidence was quickly shattered when he saw Zero suddenly make eye contact with him.
With that single glance, tinged with mockery, the eerie green soul fire in the skull's eye socket suddenly went out, falling to the ground as if it had lost all support, turning into a pile of bone parts. At the same time, in the darkness outside Shalin Town, a figure dressed in black robes suddenly screamed and knelt on the ground, letting out a horrifying, violent gasp.
"Soul magic? How did she get it?" the necromancer murmured in shock. Beneath his mud-caked hood, his eyes stared in disbelief and uncertainty towards the town of Shalin, his expression extremely grave. Without any hesitation, he endured the excruciating pain, and with the aid of wind magic, he levitated and vanished swiftly into the rainy night of the wilderness.
……
On the lamppost of the main road, looking at the skeletons scattered in a puddle, Zero's smile faded slightly, and he glanced indifferently at the mutants on the ground.
Under her gaze, these twisted creatures began to gradually return to their original state, revealing human forms. However, compared to the previous town residents, these recovered people had a noticeably dull look in their eyes, like living corpses still adapting to their bodies.
After they slowly returned home in a sleepwalking manner, Zero's face showed an even more intense weariness than before, and he yawned deeply.
……
The light pollution from the neon lights dyed the entire sky into bizarre purples, pinks, and blues, while raindrops slanted against the dazzlingly bright signs, refracting a mesmerizing halo.
By the time Yvette rode her bicycle through the city streets and returned to her villa on Yangon Street, it was only past midnight.
After parking her car, she immediately disappeared into the narrow alleys of the adjacent street and arrived at the Red Pepper nightclub, just four blocks from her home. This was the main and most frequented establishment of "Fire Ghost" Colby in the city.
While in Rusty Bones, she suspected that the most likely enemy to hire assassins to cause her trouble was the Ghost Hand Society, as the destruction of two human trafficking industrial parks had created a genuine feud between the two sides.
So, taking advantage of the fact that her target, "Fire Demon" Colby, had returned from Silver Mirror Continent, she planned to seize the opportunity to raid the place and force her to reveal the information she wanted. Of course, normally, this would be a bit troublesome.
After all, the "Red Pepper" nightclub is located in the city center, not far from the Church of Soulfire. At any time, necromancers from the Holy Spirit Sect, special police from the police headquarters, or even the military from the border may come to support her. If things escalate and attract attention from all sides, it will not be a good thing for her.
But now with the light and shadow magic "Shadow Cloak," the situation is different. Yvette can blend silently into the shadows like the silver-ranked assassin Deadham, bypassing most of the guards to reach her target. Even after killing someone, escaping will be much easier.
Ten minutes later, through the shadows of the outer wall, Yvette entered the top floor of the nightclub. The air in the corridor was filled with the smells of alcohol, perfume, and cigars, which made her frown slightly.
As a key asset of the gang, Red Pepper operates on a local area network, making it impossible to obtain information from the outside. The only way to gain access is through physical intrusion or by checking each room in turn to locate Colby.
After using Shadow Cloak to evade several gangsters guarding her, Yvette arrived outside a large room, where she heard voices coming from inside.
She listened for a while and found that there were quite a few people inside, and they all had strong local accents, which made her translation program unable to work.
She glanced at the nameplate on the room, confirmed that it was indeed the chairman's office, then kicked the door open and went inside.
The massive door panel, adorned with metal trim, swung open to the left and right, slamming heavily against the wall with a dull thud.
Under the glaring overhead lights, the nine people froze in their tracks. Most of them sat around an expensive mahogany table, while at the far end sat a chubby middle-aged man, none other than "Fire Demon" Colby.
"Damn it! Who?!"
Suddenly someone kicked the door open, and Colby cried out in surprise. The rest of his men drew their guns and aimed them at the intruder.
But after seeing the silver-haired girl's face clearly, the expressions of the gang members became strange. Except for Colby, none of the others knew anything about the silver-haired girl's background. They just looked at her beautiful face and delicate figure and guessed that this was some entertainment arranged by their boss. Their mood immediately relaxed a lot.
Colby's face suddenly turned extremely pale.
He clearly remembered that tonight was the day of the operation by the assassins from Neon Nightmare that he had hired. Although they were not top-tier assassins, they were still super experts in the assassin world. How could they let their target appear here unharmed?
Could it be that he misremembered the time? Wasn't the Silver Medal Assassin's operation scheduled for tonight? Or perhaps... the assassins of Neon Nightmare failed?
No…impossible…maybe the assassin hasn’t made a move yet…and even if he failed, the employer’s information is confidential, and Nameless couldn’t possibly have found out about it…
Colby reacted quickly, first giving his men a wink, then looking at the silver-haired girl before him, and saying in a bewildered tone, "This...uh...Miss? May I ask what brings you here so late at night..."
The eight gangsters looked at each other in bewilderment, but then put their guns away.
Yvette had no interest in playing games with Colby's pretentious act. She went straight to the point: "How do we find the 'General'?"
"Huh?" Colby was stunned for a moment, wondering if he had misheard.
“Answer me, how do I find the ‘General’?” Yvette repeated, looking at him expressionlessly. “I’ll give you ten seconds.”
The air in the room suddenly fell silent. Apart from Colby, whose expression was unpredictable, the other eight gangsters all wore strange expressions, looking at Yvette as if she were a fool.
They suspected that the young girl was some kind of hothead from who-knows-where, otherwise how could she have come up with the idea of asking "The General," the kingpin behind the entire western frontier of Rustbone, in front of "Fire Ghost" Colby, the local bully of Fusjiang?
Is she out of her mind?
But to the eight gangsters' utter surprise, less than four or five seconds had passed in the ten seconds before Colby hurriedly said, "I'll talk! I'll talk! Please calm down, sir..."
The eight gang members all turned their heads and looked at their boss in disbelief, wondering in unison if there was something wrong with their ears.
