Chapter 118, Section 117: General
Chapter 118-117- General
He led the unnamed lady to the large, leather-covered chairman's chair behind the glass door and warmly brewed her a pot of Ceylon tea. Although she didn't seem inclined to drink any, Colby ignored the shocked and bewildered looks of his subordinates and did his best to be the most courteous.
Then he gave a fawning smile and said, "General, you are the king of the western region of Rusty Bones. Most of the border cities are under the control of the Ghost Hand Society, but... I'm ashamed to say that we, the managers of local industries, can't actually contact you on our own initiative. We have to wait for you to give us instructions."
Then, seeing Yvette narrow her eyes, he hurriedly added, "But, but it's not entirely hopeless! The 'General' is looking for two people in Fusjiang... uh, not you, Miss Anonymous. There will be an operations meeting here soon, and besides me, the officials from nearby cities will also be attending, as will the General himself. This is our only chance..."
"Who are we looking for?" Yvette's heart skipped a beat.
"They said they were two little girls... but I really don't know anything more! It's classified! Absolutely classified! That's all I know... I'm sure more information will be revealed at the action meeting," Colby said confidently.
The information he provided to Yvette was a typical example of selective disclosure. He omitted the fact that the general wanted to kill the nameless man, so that the nameless man would not connect the assassination attempt he had just experienced in the neon nightmare with him. The same was true for other aspects.
However, she seemed quite cooperative, as if she knew everything, which made Yvette's interrogation process exceptionally smooth.
So, after thinking it over, Yvette decided to change the original death sentence for the gang members involved in human trafficking to a suspended death sentence.
Because she suddenly realized that they might still be useful to her in the present moment.
……
Since Colby and the others had cleaned up their terminals thoroughly, leaving few clues, Yvette left the Red Hot Chili Peppers nightclub after checking it over, seemingly preparing to plan the Ghost Hand Society's action meeting in a couple of days.
Once the silver-haired girl's figure disappeared into the darkness outside the window, Colby sank into the cold leather sofa, panting heavily.
"Big Brother! What's the deal with that woman just now?" the eight underlings couldn't help but ask. In Rustbone, due to information control issues, the famous mercenary Wuming, who was renowned in the United States, was virtually unknown in Rustbone. If it weren't for the death of "Dead Eye" Bryce and the general's mission, even Colby wouldn't have bothered to gather relevant intelligence.
“She’s the ‘nameless one’ who killed Bryce, and the one the general wants to kill.” Colby lit a cigarette, seemingly deep in thought, shadows falling over his dark eyes.
"She's Nameless?" The eight henchmen were taken aback. They thought to themselves that it was a good thing they hadn't attacked yet. If even a monster like Bryce couldn't beat her, they weren't really confident that all eight of them could take her down.
Colby didn't speak. He walked to the window and looked out to make sure that Nameless wasn't eavesdropping outside. Only then did he close the window. His previous fear and obsequiousness vanished, leaving only a cold, contemptuous ruthlessness.
He chuckled coldly and said, "Hmph, it's good that she's just a novice. She's too soft-hearted and doesn't even know to silence people... Let the general kill this presumptuous little girl."
The fact that the communication between the supervisor and the general is one-way is already a semi-public secret, and it is one of the reasons why the general is rarely seen.
But one thing he didn't mention was that not all managers were unable to contact the general. For example, Colby, a local strongman in the industry with outstanding performance, was one of the few "favorites" who had control over communication channels with the general.
He had deliberately concealed this matter because he wanted to set a trap for the silver-haired girl with the general. Once they successfully captured her, he would make a grand entrance as the victor. He couldn't even imagine how interesting the nameless young lady's expression would be.
Moreover, this is an open strategy, because the general only appears once. Even if the opponent knows it's a trap, they will still fall into it, which is the most pleasing part.
……
The rain had stopped at 3 a.m.
After navigating the deserted streets with few pedestrians and wading through puddles, Colby arrived at the entrance of the Church of Soulfire. Opening the car door, a rush of damp, cold air hit him. He took a few breaths to calm his still somewhat nervous heart, crossed the empty square in front of the church, and walked to a small door at the edge.
Behind this small door was a forest path leading to a hidden back door of the Church of Soulfire. He was shocked to learn of this method of contacting the general, realizing that the general indeed had some connection to the church. However, actually using this method was a first for him.
After looking around and making sure there was no one nearby, Colby rang the doorbell. A moment later, a deacon wearing a black hood came over, opened the door for him without saying a word, and let him in.
Colby couldn't understand how the deacon had discerned his intentions, letting him in without even asking what he wanted. He could only marvel at the general's extraordinary abilities and how his cooperation with the church had reached such a profound level.
After the deacon returned to his patrol, he continued forward and arrived at a small entrance at the back of the church. The door was unlocked, so he pushed it open and entered the rear section of the church. The corridor here was filled with the smell of aged wood. Continuing straight ahead, there was a special confessional. This confessional was usually under maintenance and not open, but it was precisely Colby's destination.
He walked to the confessional, pushed it open, pressed a switch on the wall, and waited quietly. About half an hour later, Colby heard someone enter through the grid-like partition wall of the confessional. A deep, hoarse male voice followed: "Colby, you wanted to see me? What's up?"
That's the general's voice!
Colby's heart skipped a beat, and he immediately reported, "General, that nameless one...she found me! I hired an assassin from Neon Nightmare to deal with her...but it seems they failed! I'm truly sorry! She forced me to reveal the meeting in two days; she'll probably come looking for you that day, and I'm a little worried..." A deep silence fell across the cubicle, until the general's voice finally broke through: "Anything else?"
"No...no more..."
"I see."
Is that all? After waiting a while, seeing that the general didn't intend to continue speaking, Colby was a little surprised. He thought there would be something about him helping with the ambush preparations, or at least making amends, right? He didn't expect the general's reaction to be so calm, as if he wasn't the one being targeted by the Nameless One.
As expected of a general, he has everything under control... He breathed a sigh of relief, feeling that his mission was finally accomplished. He turned around, stroked the doorknob, and pulled open the iron door of the confessional.
The dim yellow wall lamps in the corridor outside the door cast a meager, gloomy glow.
The instant he stepped out of the confessional, a sharp blue light suddenly flashed across his neck, severing his head! Colby felt a chill on the side of his neck, and his vision suddenly tumbled and turned upside down. The last thing he saw was his own obese corpse slowly falling over.
The general is right here... Am I dead?
How could this be?
He was lost in thought until the very last moment before his consciousness faded, when he saw that familiar silver hair emerge from the shadows.
……
Without glancing at the headless corpse beside her, Yvette emerged from the shadows, entered the confessional, looked at the wooden partition that divided the confessional in two, then reached out and created a swirling blue vortex, tearing the partition apart.
The dust from the cracks mixed with tiny wood chips spread out, but the person behind the wall remained standing still.
When the dust settled, what came into Yvette's view was the face of Hoyle Koss, the requiem priest.
But Yvette knew this wasn't Hoyle himself, because his current state was truly bizarre. His face was stiff like a wax figure, and his eyes were flashing with an eerie green light, making him look like he was possessed by an evil spirit.
No wonder Hoyle suspected that someone in the Church of Soulfire was colluding with the Ghost Hand Society and had been unable to find out for so long... Yvette thought to herself, if the colluder was herself, how could she have found out?
"Good evening, Miss Nameless." The general controlling Hoyle's body said calmly, seemingly unsurprised and not angry about Colby's death. "I didn't expect you to come to me on your own initiative."
"Should I call you General, or Lord Lind Benedict, the High Priest of Reincarnation?" Yvette asked calmly.
Since it was known beforehand that Hoyle Koss was a level three mage and a necromancer, it was easy to conclude that the person who could manipulate Hoyle in this way without him noticing was at least a level five necromancer, or another level five mage skilled in soul magic.
Although the "General" of the Ghost Hand Society is terrifying and mysterious, it is ultimately just a large-scale criminal gang involved in human trafficking. It doesn't seem like a job that the Trinity or the Papacy would do personally. This means that it is most likely one of the five major priests of the Holy Spirit Church who is also in charge.
At this point, combined with the "general's" sphere of influence, it can be immediately deduced that the general's true identity is Lind Benedict, one of the five high priests of reincarnation and the direct superior of the Requiem Priest Hoyle, because he is the only one who is the highest leader of the Rustybone Western Diocese.
"You reacted quickly," the general said coldly, but did not deny it.
“I thought you would try to argue your way out of it,” Yvette said.
“There’s no need for that,” the general said, stating a fact. “Anyone who knows my identity will die; I’m not worried.”
“I’m a pro at using the internet. It will only take a short time to spread this message so far that even the old lady at the village entrance knows about it,” Yvette reminded him.
“You won’t have that chance.” The general’s tone gradually changed, taking on a cold tone, as if he were issuing a proclamation. He said contemptuously, “Now, prepare to face the final moments of your life, Miss Nameless.”
As soon as she finished speaking, Yvette heard a loud noise coming from outside. She looked out the window next to her and saw countless snow-white skeletal arms emerging from the ground in the church garden, spreading their five fingers towards the night sky, like white bone grass covering the mountains and fields, wriggling and swaying in the evening breeze.
