Chapter 36 Farewell
Chapter 36 Farewell (Seeking monthly votes and recommendations)
After taking a shower, putting on a silk nightgown, and closing the door to his room, Larry sat cross-legged on the thick down mattress and began to take stock of his current assets under the light.
A handgun, a land deed for 83 acres of land, and $3038 in cash.
Well, this doesn't even include his own salary, because Larry really did have Mr. Porter save his salary and collect it all at the end of the year.
Reborn in America in 1891, Larry has gradually adapted to life there and discovered the path that truly suits him.
He was very happy!
Especially in this era, Larry has loving parents and mentors and friends like Mr. Potter and Logan, which makes Larry feel even happier.
For the first time, Larry's two lifetimes combined gave him a sense of confidence that he could control his destiny.
.
The next morning, a waiter knocked on Larry's door to wake him and presented him with clean leather shoes and a shirt with beautifully ironed creases on a silver platter.
After Larry finished dressing and carefully hid the pistol, land deed, and cash, he calmly walked to his parents' room and knocked on the door.
The door opened, and Larry's father and mother walked out, looking refreshed. Larry peeked out and saw that his mother had even neatly folded the blankets she had slept under on the bed.
"Mom and Dad, let's go have breakfast!" Larry smiled and gestured to his parents.
Larry's mother looked at him with tender eyes, her face full of undisguised smiles.
The father maintained his usual stern expression, but after hearing Larry's words, he nodded and said, "We'll follow your arrangements."
The three of them went to the restaurant on the first floor for breakfast. On the way, they encountered a group of elegantly dressed upper-class people. Although Larry and his family of three were dressed in their most respectable clothes, they still seemed a little out of place in this environment.
Larry's parents became a little nervous again, but Larry remained calm and led them to a table to sit down.
Soon after, the waiter whom Larry had tipped the day before brought out a sumptuous breakfast for the three of them.
On the snow-white Irish linen tablecloth, there were pristine white plates and silver cutlery.
First up was a cold appetizer: chilled oysters.
A dozen oysters, served on ice in a silver platter, accompanied by lemon wedges and horseradish sauce, is the traditional breakfast staple at the Boston Harbor Hotel.
"Tea, coffee, or cocoa?" the waiter asked with a slight bow.
The mother was a little unaccustomed to it. She saw that Larry had chosen coffee while Larry's father had chosen tea, and after a moment's hesitation, she ordered cocoa for herself.
Soon, three cups of hot drinks were delivered.
What was placed in front of Larry's father was Darjeeling tea from India, served with fresh milk and pale yellow Cuban cane sugar;
A cup of freshly ground Javanese coffee, accompanied by a cream ball and maple syrup, sits in front of the ramen.
Larry's mother, on the other hand, had a cup of freshly brewed Venezuelan cocoa beans, sprinkled with nutmeg powder.
The hot dishes were classic American breakfast: one plate of veal pancreas coated in flour and pan-fried in butter, topped with caramelized onions; and another plate of thick-cut Kentucky smoked ham, drizzled with syrup and roasted pineapple with cloves.
In addition, the main course was a basket of freshly baked bread, which contained yeast rye bread, raisin scones, and French croissants.
After the waiter finished serving the bread basket, he respectfully asked, "Would you like some oatmeal? Our oatmeal is cooked with cinnamon milk and garnished with roasted walnuts and dried cranberries."
The mother glanced at the father but didn't speak. Larry, however, nodded and said, "Yes, we need it!"
After the three of them finished their sumptuous breakfast, the waiter served them a candied fruit tart and a cheese platter. Although the mother was already quite full, her eyes widened at the sight of the dessert.
"Mom, have some more...try it." Larry said with a smile.
The mother nodded, picked up a piece of Limburg cheese with her silver fork, looked at it in front of her eyes first, and then put it in her mouth to chew slowly.
The waiter served Larry's father a glass of sherry after the meal.
Larry's parents had agreed that Larry would arrange everything, but this lavish breakfast left them questioning their existence.
The father, holding his sherry, looked out the double-paned window at the snow-covered streets, reflecting the morning sunlight. After a moment of silence, he spoke.
"Larry, you've grown up. Your mother and I are so happy to see you establish yourself in this industry and earn a salary we never imagined."
Larry, who had been sipping his coffee, quickly put down his cup, straightened up, and adopted a serious listening expression when he heard his father's tone.
The father was pleased with Larry's reaction and continued,
“This puts our minds at ease. You know, some things are bound to happen sooner or later… After we buy the farm, your mother and I will move to Holliston, but you will definitely stay in Boston.”
Upon hearing this, the mother put down her food and turned to look at her husband.
Larry's heart sank. He knew this was bound to happen sooner or later, since he couldn't possibly take a two-hour train ride to Boston every day to get to work.
But hearing his father say that with his own ears still made him feel a little sad. In the past six months since his rebirth, he had lived a harmonious life with his mother and father. Now that he was suddenly facing separation, he felt uneasy.
The father seemed about to say something, but then stopped abruptly. He took a sip of sherry to mask his unease.
Knowing how the father felt, the mother, her eyes slightly red, said to Larry, "When your father was a sailor, he was always away from home. After he decided to settle down back home, he told me that he was very happy to be home with you. He said he missed so many wonderful times watching you grow up..."
Larry could sense the sincerity in his mother's words, and his own eyes welled up with tears.
“Anyway, I’m so glad, Larry Livingston, you’ve really grown up. Your mother and I are very pleased to see that,” the father continued.
The mother nodded quickly, her lips trembling slightly.
Larry really didn't want to think about these things anymore, so he quickly changed the subject, joking with his parents about some funny childhood memories. The two of them turned from sad to happy, reminiscing about the old days.
Finally, Larry's father concluded, "Well, our family has had a very fulfilling two days. First, we bought our own farm, and second, we spent a day with Larry in this magnificent hotel. It was perfect! We need to hurry back home to celebrate Christmas while it's still early."
“We can stay here another night, so Mom won’t have to go back and prepare dinner,” Larry suggested.
Both the father and mother shook their heads.
“No, no! My child, please remember, Christmas should always be spent at home, and our family should be together every year,” the father said.
Looking at the many dishes left on the table, the mother remarked, "A room for $4.5 with such a lavish breakfast included doesn't seem expensive to me."
The father smiled but didn't say anything. Larry smiled and looked at his parents, replying, "Yes! It's not expensive for our family to enjoy life together."
