Chapter 9 Paladin VS Grey Dwarf Overseer

As the first rays of sunlight fell on the mountain valley, Anser felt something and suddenly sat up.

He didn't sleep well. After synchronizing with the staff, he couldn't fall asleep for a long time. Memories of his past life and the battle of the day surged in his mind, and he was filled with all sorts of emotions.

Previously, I was caught in a crisis and didn't have time to think too much. As soon as I stopped, I started to overthink things. How can one adapt to something like time travel so quickly?

However, having been a dull and tiring laborer in my past life, and now being a professional who wields magical powers, this place is much more interesting.

"You're awake," Blatt's voice came from beside my ear.

Anser looked in the direction of the sound and spotted him in a large tree not far away.

He squatted on the tree trunk, holding his sword and gazing into the distance; it seemed he had been there for a while.

"So early?"

“That’s enough. I sleep very well. Besides, if I stayed up any later, I’d be sucked dry by the mosquitoes.” Blatt rolled over and jumped off the tree trunk.

"Are there mosquitoes?" Anser asked, puzzled.

“You have dragon blood, so mosquitoes wouldn’t dare come near you,” Blatt glanced at him sideways.

"I see." Anser chuckled, not expecting the dragon bloodline to have this effect.

“We need to set off early. Dust Eagle Mountain isn’t big, but it’s not easy to walk.” Blatt took out some food from his pack and gave it to Anser, then handed him a half-empty cloth bag. “Put it in your backpack, so you won’t go hungry if you get separated from your pack.”

He had already noticed that Anser had little experience in wilderness survival and was a little worried.

"And you?" Anser didn't answer.

“Please do not doubt the survival skills of a seasoned adventurer,” Blatt emphasized deliberately.

“You can keep it; I have more in my backpack.” Anser shook his head slightly.

He may lack experience, but he's not brainless; all the good stuff is in his backpack.

“Alright.” Blatt glanced at his backpack and reminded him again, “Food is more important than anything else when you’re fleeing. Sometimes even dragon coins can’t buy bread.”

"Thank you for reminding me." Anser nodded.

Dragon coins were common circulating gold coins in Faerûn, which could be exchanged for 10 silver coins or 100 copper coins (alloy coins), and one copper coin could buy about a pound of wheat.

Breakfast consisted of cold bread, Gouda cheese, and turkey bacon strips. The two of them ate to their hearts' content, knowing they couldn't be too weak for a fight or a getaway.

After finishing their meal, it was already broad daylight. The two packed their things and immediately went down the mountain, then continued eastward along the Chongsa River.

Dust Eagle Mountain is only two or three kilometers in diameter and several hundred meters high. There are no ferocious wild animals, and many residents often travel through the mountain for convenience, so there are many trails here.

The two proceeded cautiously and on guard for a long time, but they didn't see a single human, let alone any underground creatures.

Only a few rotting corpses told them that this place was not safe.

It is now the month of summer tides, which is July. The weather is hot, and the corpse will soon start to smell.

“It’s been at least a day, and it’s all been done by humans.” Blatt seemed unsurprised.

Subterranean creatures are unfamiliar with their environment and could not possibly find such a hidden place in a short time.

Anser pursed his lips and remained silent. After a day of adjustment, he was able to observe the corpses without changing his expression, but the fermenting stench was simply unbearable.

After more than half an hour, the terrain became flatter.

After crossing a barren hillside, the view suddenly opened up, revealing a dense cluster of buildings, mainly low wooden houses, gray and messy, crowded and lacking in planning.

Hundreds of meters away on the riverbank, a tall bridge spans the Chongsa River, densely packed with buildings. Though called a bridge, it is more like a commercial alleyway built on the Feilong Rock in the riverbed.

This is the famous Flying Dragon Bridge, and the magnificent city tower in the center is the Flame Fist Fortress.

It is an important transportation hub. On the other side of the bridge is the Livington area, and on this side of the bridge is the Twins area. To the north of the Twins area is the Sow's Hoof area.

Anser inherited the original owner's memories and was very familiar with all of this, so he wasn't too surprised.

Using his height advantage, he scanned the Twin Song District one by one, but saw no trace of subterranean creatures. However, there were quite a few humans staying there.

“It seems that the subterranean creatures haven’t been here before.” Blatt turned to look at Anser, his eyes questioning.

“Let’s go.” Anser didn’t hesitate and took the lead in descending the mountain.

The two hurried northeast along the edge of Dust Eagle Mountain, without venturing into the city or making contact with anyone hiding inside a building.

The Twin Songs area and the Sow's Hoof area are connected by a narrow road with low slopes on both sides.

After turning the corner at the foot of the mountain, a clearly paved road appears ahead, winding to the left before being obscured by the mountain.

At the same time, a cacophony of sounds assaulted Anser's ears: howling, screams, roars, the clash of weapons...

"Something's happened!" Blatt paused, then gently drew his longsword.

“It’s the Grey Dwarves.” Anser’s heart sank. He heard the underground common language and goblin language. The two approached quietly, their voices growing louder. As the road changed direction, a chaotic battlefield came into view.

A dozen or so humans are fighting against more than thirty gray dwarf slaves. The battle is fierce, and the ground is littered with corpses and blood.

Anser squinted, seeing such a fierce battle for the first time. He was a little nervous, but also a little excited.

"The gray dwarves have actually made it this far." Blatt's expression turned grave.

Anser also realized that he probably couldn't go to the sow's hoof area.

“The leader is a paladin of the God of Justice, and they… are in trouble.” Blatt quickly surveyed the battlefield.

Anser looked closely and found that the human side included not only humans, but also halflings and dwarves. Their clothing was not uniform, so they were probably a hastily assembled group.

At the forefront were two human paladins, their swords and shields gleaming with holy light, who managed to withstand an attack from several times their number of enemies and barely hold their line.

The gray dwarves were mainly composed of goblins, including tall bear goblins and large goblins, along with about ten orcs. Four or five gray dwarves stood in the rear and did not participate in the battle directly.

“I know them, Rand and Zahir from the Church of Ultimate Hope in the Twin Song District,” Anser said in a deep voice.

The original owner grew up in the outer city and was very familiar with the Church of Final Hope, often playing there when he was a child.

"Do you need help?" Blatt looked at Anser, waiting for him to make a decision.

Logically speaking, they should go and help. If the gray dwarves win, they will inevitably occupy the Dragon Bridge, and no one will be able to leave.

But people value their lives; if they can run, why risk their lives?

"Don't rush." Anser focused his attention on observing the gray dwarves.

[Grey Dwarf Overlord, Dwarf, Challenge Level 6]

[Goblin Commander, Goblin-like, Challenge Level 3]

His eyelids twitched, and he felt a desire to back out.

Level 5 is a watershed moment; for example, a mage can master the third-circle fireball spell, resulting in a surge in power.

Level 5-10 professionals are the backbone of major organizations. City guard commanders are generally around this level and are known as elite professionals.

Challenge levels are different from class levels; a standard 4-person adventure team is required to defeat monsters of the same challenge level.

The challenge level for the young black dragon is only 7.

Anser suppressed his emotions and turned his attention back to the human side.

[Rand, Human, Level 6 Paladin (Oath of Devotion)]

Zahir, Human, Level 5 Paladin (Oath of Devotion)

“This battle is achievable!” After a few seconds of deliberation, Anser decided to help.

Grey dwarves are sensitive to sunlight and are weaker in combat during the day. Most importantly, paladins will not betray their teammates and will hold off the enemy's main force even if they are defeated.

Ansela passed over Blatt and pointed out several of the stronger enemies to him, signaling him to be careful.

"Let's go."

“Follow me.” Blatt grinned coldly, sword in hand, and charged forward first.
